[Q] Does T-Mobile know you're rooted? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have been on T-Mobile for a few weeks now. I downloaded the "T-Mobile My Account" app to manage my account, pay bills, etc. I got a notification today from the app telling me some test results and one of them was saying I was rooted. So is this info sent to T-Mobile and they know that I am rooted or are these test just done locally for my own info? And does T-mobile even care if we root our phones? I'm not really worried, I'm just curious about it. Screenshots attached below.

They can because of this app, but they won't do anything about it. You can still get a replacement device and use JUMP and all that.

Yeah, I didnt know how strict they were. You hear things about rooting voiding your warranty and all. Like I said, I'm new to T-Mobile. But I dont see myself needing a replacement or anything anytime soon. I've never broken a phone before.

Yeah the people at the store near me actually encourage people to root their device if they can and get rid of all the bloat. Most carriers don't even look at the phone when it comes in. They just wipe the entire thing anyway.

The T-Mobile store by my house was saying he roots his, was boasting that the Nexus 4(just came out at the time) he could tether all he wants with no T-Mobile restrictions. He pushed my Mom to buy Nexus 4(which wasn't that hard she had a Nexus S) so yeah it certainly happens. If your a phone tech nerd why not apply for T-Mobile, Sprint, At&t etc)

T-Mobile really doesn't care. You can talk about rooting and jailbreak in front of them and they'll tag along with you about it.

I assume you have verified under settings > applications to see whether or not you have the "unknown sources" option, and if it is there, that is is checked.
If it's not there then, as mentioned, you'll have to call ATT to get them to push it to the phone.

It's the "sideloading update", or you can say it's the update that allows you to install 3rd party applications that aren't on the Android Market. If the AT&T wireless rep still doesn't know what you're talking about, then they are an untrained moron and you should ask to be transferred to someone else.

Indeed. Not only that, but my parents both have bone stock inspires, and I checked their phones out of curiosity, and sure enough, they have "unknown sources" now.
Keep in mind, they don't have a friggin clue what it does, or that anything even changed on their phone.
Kinda funny how clueless parents get it without even asking for it, and the people desparate for it have to call up att.

Just ask them to push the Sideloading update to your phone. If they don't know what they are doing, then their customer support must be terrible.
your welcome works on my att inspire 4g. it will prompt for update. the update works without issue.
So there are people who have had success with att doing this then huh? I've called 3 different reps and no one could find anything. This is for my girlfriend's phone who does not want it rooted but one of the main selling points over the atrix was having the appstore.

What would ruin your warranty? A non-visible "unknown sources" that ATT actually allows now anyway?
Or s-Off @ hboot?
Or superuser?
Or a non-stock ROM?

Yeah I thought about that...if I happened to get a sales rep that yells out, "You're rooted!"...but I needed that SIM card and really didn't want the hassle of popping the Hack Kit and going back to stock just for a SIM card...it was kind of fun .

My phone looks so stock that I doubt they'd notice. Still, I'd be a bit jumpy while in the ATT store waiting for the SIM. But you managed it, so....

Developer Edition Verizon GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader

Like the title states, Samsung will be releasing a Verizon Developer Edition GSIII with Unlockable Bootloader. Thoughts? Comments? Curse words?
I mainly want to know, will this impact our data plan if we purchase this product.
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-offer-hacker-friendly-developer-edition-galaxy-s-iii?utm_source=ac&utm_medium=twitter
This pisses me off even more than the bootloader being locked in the first place. Not only would I have to sell my normal S3, I'd have to wait for one of the developer ones, most likely with a tiny stock, to ship to me. I don't know how Samsung could possibly think this is a valid solution after the majority of people who want to hack their phone bought it when it came out.

I want to know how soon it will be available. I would gladly sell my new S3 on Ebay to buy an unlocked one.
Any chance this could help people on here unlock the bootloader on the VZW S3?
I'm also slightly skeptical of this. I don't see this anywhere else but on some blogs. I can't find anything official from Samsung.
Hmm, according to CNet, Samsung sent this out as an email. That could be why there's no official release.
I also don't see that you can currently buy anything from http://developer.samsung.com
Ahh, verified https://twitter.com/SamsungJohn/status/222832375422402560
What a pile of steaming ****.
**** you, Verizon.
it should be noted guys that hardware wise its prolly gunna be the same.. ergo flashing the low level partitions will prolly "convert" ya
im just saying that based on speculation..
When?!
That's the question I have.
Also, will it have all the vzw junk and the annoying notification spam?

This is the most annoying frustrating thing. Do I return the phone before the 14 days are up now? I don't really want to spend double on the exact same phone... F u Verizon.
This could be good news for us. Looks like Samsung is getting some heat from us. I say keep the calls to Samsung going and also the facebook comments going. I keep telling that I'm returning because of this. They don't want to hear this..... Keep going guys...

This is absolutely disgusting.
I don't know why people support this, or why people are assuming we'll magically be able to flash the developer firmware/bootloader to our standard Verizon Galaxy S3s.
Haven't read into it yet but is this version only available unsubsidized? Or can it be purchased at a subsidized price if I haven't upgraded yet?

i would imagine that shot is at me, like i said just guessing i dont see any reason why not.
using something like dd to write every single partition to another device and basically "clone it" would then bypass the checks for certain software.

No, that wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular- I was more referring to the tons of support the model was getting in the IRC channel.
I don't understand it, because I seriously doubt it will help.
It's possible, but I'm really doubting it.
Regardless, unless it does prove as a method for allowing consumer-level devices to be unlocked, it is practically useless to almost all Galaxy S3 owners on Verizon.
I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just disgusted Samsung and/or Verizon would think this is an okay alternative.
Also, how about all that "unlocked devices will hurt the network" stuff from Verizon? I believe there's a bit of a contradiction here.
Edit: Just restating, no hard feelings towards you, shabbypenguin, or anyone else, it just blows my mind Samsung and Verizon would pull this.

You'll be buying directly from Samsung so there will be no subsidy. You'd have to sell your Verizon-bought phone and use the cash for this if you want to do it on the cheap.
So basically the phone doesn't come with a warranty why offer warranty on a phone that people want to hack Verizon u piss me off I'm on sprint and I probably hate Verizon for doing this just as much as u guys

Giving my locked GS3 to my wife.
Well this will make my wife happy. As soon as the developer version is available I'm going to get it and give the locked GS3 I just got today to my wife.
One question though, assuming the locked version can be unlocked, does that mean development for both devices will be the same? Or is it possible that they will have to have separate development?

Sprint in south Florida

OK I'm starting this post for my buddy who has a sprint galaxy nexus we live in south Florida and spring took there towers off line today to do some service to there towers well when they put them back online they deactivated his service and when he called customer service he told them his phone was rooted and unlocked with a custom ROM and they told him that sprint probably seen that his phone was rooted and that is why they deactivated his device well he has it back on now and is getting no data what so ever

cant see that happening tbh, why would a phone network care about what you do to your device? Only the phone manufacturer would care about you invalidating your warranty if you were to book it in for repair.

Tell him to do a profile update. Settings -> About Phone -> Sprint updates -> Update Profile (if I remember correctly) and then Update PRL. Otherwise just call up Sprint and tell them he's not getting data and they should be able to refresh his profile from their end. Also, they can't do anything about you rooting your phone as it's yours. If he starts tethering like 50GB a month or something stupid like that, then yeah there's an issue. But I'm assume it's normal usage. Why he even bothered telling the lady his phone is rooted is beyond me...No offense, but that was pretty stupid.

Hey what's up guys? I'm the guy with the Sprint issues. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all why they would care about my device but the way she made it sound was that Sprint cannot restore my 3g data because my device was rooted. She told me that my best bet would be to flash back to stop and start over. She concluded with an offer to follow up with me after I flashed back to stock and she could rectify the data situation then. Call me crazy but I think I want the opinion of the guys who know what's going on and not the one of the chick reading off her computer screen. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Several things I have to say:
1. Do not EVER EVER EVER tell your phone company that you rooted your device because the things that run through their mind are:
a) ****! Now he can tether without paying!
b) We're not fixing your phone now because you voided the warranty.
I hope she didn't put notes on your account for b) because that can prevent you from getting your phone repaired in a Sprint store.
Also, it depends what software is on your phone. Have you tried going back to stock? Have you tried calling Sprint again and not mentioning that your phone is rooted?

Technician notes are different from account notes, so if you were to go into a store for a repair I'm sure they wouldn't see that. Try reactivating your phone. Call Sprint, tell them:
"I called a while ago because I was having issues with data. A rep told me to punch in a code in the dialer and he also gave me the MSL code for my phone, but I can't find where I wrote it down. Do you mind telling me how to re-do the Handsfree Activation?"
Follow the instructions and see if that works. If nothing comes up on the dialer when you punch in the code, your ROM doesn't have Handsfree-Activation included. Try going to a stock ROM or ROM that has the Sprint menus in it.

I would go as far to say it would be illegal for the phone company to cut you off for tethering a device that you own. (There are apps such as FoxFi that bypass the 'tethering tax' mobile networks try to claim) However, as someone said previously if you are downloading heavily then I guess they could cut you off for that.
At T-Mobile, NO such policy of cutting you off exists and they rely solely on throttling and packet shaping.

Thing is, he barely knows what he's doing. He's rooted and ROM'd but that's it. He's new to this whole thing. I don't even think he was tethering; I was just using it as an example for why a phone company wouldn't want you rooting their devices. But yeah I agree, you can't get cut off for modifying your device like that unless it was doing something that it logically should not be able to do (like if you were using it as a 24/7 server to host a website or something crazy).

Verizon rep said my nova launcher voids my warranty?

Ive been using and rooting droids for about 4 years, lately ive been haveing issues with my s3 gps took it in talked to a VZ rep and the first thing he said when he saw my phone was "YOU HAVE A LAUNCHER ON YOUR PHONE YOU KNOW THAT VOIDS THE WARRANTY! Make sure you uninstall that before sending back" thats the first time i have ever heard that is this guy full of it or is this something new?
theres nothing wrong with nova launcher on your phone.
most reps are not as knowledgeable as they should be.

vzw reps are notoriously known for being dumbasses...don't listen to em lol.......and anyway, unless its completely hard bricked, who doesn't reset their phone back to complete stock before sending it back anyway to ensure they don't see any traces of ya tweaking w/ it?
The VZW rep sounds ridiculous like expected. My guess is that rep was thinking the phone doesn't "look" how TW looks and therefore assumes that's an indication of modified software. Regardless, it's good practice to reset your phone to stock for exchanges and returns.

I honestly would have told that guy he's an idiot straight to his face. God people are dumb.

I am a Verizon rep and the guy was either an idiot and doesnt know what he is talking about or he is just a complete douche. There is nothing wrong with running a launcher that is able to be put on a phone that doent require root. There are many instances when I had the unfortunate job to tell people they are screwed. I have also instructed people how to get back to stock or referred them here to XDA. I love opening the potential of my phone up and customizing it as it is an extension of myself.
I would have been tempted to go over to their working demo, download it and say yours is voided now too and leave !

Here, it's Best Buy. While our Radio Shack is not the best place to get advice, it's better than Best Buy.

yea i had a verizon wireless rep tell me something similar. He took one look at my phone and said, "to be honest i dont know what kind of software you have going on here but whatever it is that is what is causing your problem". i guess Nova Launcher causes the phone's radio to disfunction and lose data all of a sudden......

Haha.. same thing here. Crazy data drops with my first phone, took it into vzw, dude takes one look at the clock on the home screen and asks what ROM I'm running. I told him there was no ROM, but he insisted the clock wasn't stock so I must have a different ROM on it. Went to the display s3's, changed all their clocks to what mine had then asked if he'd help me with my problem.
Man he ****ed my account up... I spent weeks arguing with vzw over the **** he did...

Indeed! I bought a sprint Note II and went to BestBuy to look for accessories....
Lady was adamant that its "not even released in the US yet."
I just laughed, pulled my phone out my pocket, and said... Yeah, sure its not and this doesnt exist...
Then just walked out, lol
