Is the screen really this bad? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've received the red edition today and right away noticed how yellow the screen is. This is next to a Note 3, I also compared it next to an iphone 5s with same result. Or is this thing defective?

thats the color google wants it to be by default. but, its only a software thing. you can always root your device, flash a custom kernel that supports changing the colors, then change the color.

Before you go through all that trouble, this is the best I've gotten it with Franco Kernel and the FKU app.
The left screen is a perfectly calibrated monitor. The right one is obviously the N5.

I find it funny that the Note 3 and the N5 have different weather forecasts. The numbers vary quite a bit.

It's also worth pointing out that while the stock colour profile is purposely more yellowy than that seen on most phones, OPs is so yellow because the phones use a type of glue that discolours the screen - but it DOES wear off after a few days. You can see that confirmed in the bottom post here.

I'm confused...my Nexus 5 has whiter colors than ANY of my other devices. Very bright clean white. Do they really very from unit to unit that much??

Yup. I wish they took the N7 screen, shrunk it, and put it on the N5. That screen is amazing.

I don't buy that. Mine has been yellow from the day I got it in November. If it doesn't clear up in months, it never will.

As yellow as the OPs? Because if so, you should have RMA'd it. Mine is nowhere near that yellow if I revert back to stock kernel..

Yes, as yellow as his. It's really only noticeable when you compare it to something else. I don't feel a need to RMA for something like that. Everything else was fine about the phone, so I thought i would just keep it.
Anyway, it's all good now with franco kernel.

I'm guessing the first batch had decent screens with nice whites and little light bleed for.. reviews
Then lg cut corners on subsequent batches and made the screens as cheap as possible with little calibration and little guard against light bleed.

Pictuers are not that helpful or just don't put to much faith to them because the final result will be determined by the screen of your laptop or phone and not just by his camera.
if your laptop's display is blueish, the yellow picture he takes will look little green to you and etc...

Why manufacturers refuse to calibrate to a single color temperature is still beyond me..

Well as I said before, mine didn't. I had an iPhone 5s with the same problem and that actually did get better though. It's just luck if you got a bluer one or a yellower one.

In term of material, 100% I agree with you about metal bezel.
Before I saw S4 pics on web/pic I though like you: S3s but in real life S4 much more different than S3: sexier, better build, minutely. Totally S4 has good looking.
The worst: small/slim bezel next to screen can not be replace without replace screen.

It's not technically better whites. It's just better brightness.
People confuse brightness with quality of white. GN2 is brighter than GS4. White is more closer to color temperature rather than brightness.

I don't care much about technical more than real life .
Cause of limited of my camera tech, Note 2 has blue tint but S4 reduce it much, no pink tint.
But when compare to IPS LCD, S4 white still is not good as.
"Photo Professional" screen mode = very good mode, a balance between standard and natural mode

Oh great. I'm so sick about the color shifting on Note 2 when the viewing angle sightly changes (maybe due to the strange subpixel stripes layout).
I can see that on S4 it's much better now.
It's sunny in Hanoi now, so can yoou give us same photos (and comments also) about sunlight legitibility of S4 compared to Note 2? Thanks.
Find it so funny how people get hung up on **** they don't notice unless it's being compared to another phone. When do you ever get the current top smart phones and compare them all in real life? When you're using the phone on it's own your brain thinks that is pure white and it is what you see it as. I have never used a phone and thought "that has a red tint" or whatever, no because you do not notice it in every day use.
Instead of going by the numbers and what not, lets just see how it looks in everyday use.
If it does have a slight red tint it actually will save power as red is the next best thing to black on an AMOLED in order to to use less screen power. Not saying its good or bad for visuals, just elaborating there may be more a reason for it. What type of gamma do they use, is it more oriented to fluorescent or incandescent lighting?

Different Screens in newer models?

So I RMA'd and Google sent me a new Nexus 5 from the new "311k" batch. My original Nexus 5 is a "launch" version of the "310k" batch...
I turn my phone on and I immediately see a yellow/brownish tint to the new one they sent me (311k). Now, is this something that's permanent or will it get better with more use of the phone? My original Nexus 5 has bright whites with no beige tint to them...
I took some pics with an S3, the differences in pictures seem minor...in person it's literally night and day. Especially when using an app like hangouts...I'm sure if I had a better camera it'd pick it up.
Both taken at full brightness

I am not. I searched google and it seems to be an issue some people are having...but like I said it's odd to me because it's such a drastic difference and you can notice it everywhere on the phone.
You can't even say the whites are "white"
That's really interesting. There is a way to find it what type of screen out has with a terminal command. It's in a screen thread here somewhere. It would be good to know exactly what screens both the phones have. I noticed when I got my phone it had a brownish, reddish tint and flashing a custom kernel gave me amazing colors.

I know kernels can change the colors but why would it be different if it were a software issue? I know the 311k didn't have to download an update as the 310k's did when you turn on the phone.

Well its only there to protect the screen during transit. Have you compared them without it on? It is possible it causes a slight tint to the screen?
As much as I know, yellow tint is normal with new screens. It goes away after some days of usage.
Firstly 311 just indicates 2013 month 11 (November) production date and 310 was month 10 - its not a build standard despite what many seem to be thinking. If something in production changes one day then you'll need the whole serial number to know if it's before or after a change.
My first was November production (311) and it came pre-loaded with Kit Kat - but it had a serious screen defect (colour banding and distortions) and was replaced by another November (311). I would say the second does have warmer whites but as it all works as designed I'm happy.

Same thing happened to me on my replacement. The first one seemed super white (along with some dead pixels) and the new one has a warmer (yellower) tone to it. At first I thought the same thing, is this a defect. And then I thought either way I like a warmer tone on a screen. The brighter one almost hurt my eyes actually.. Since I've been using the new screen for a while I think it may have brightened up some, but I don't have my defective N5 to compare it to. I guess my point is that I don't think it is defective. I think it is an improvement over the first one. Especially since I don't have any dead pixels and my vibrator motor is stronger too.
Just got mine 3 days ago and has the warmer looking screen. I do prefer the cooler screens like my N4 had but will live with it since there are no dead pixels or other issues people have reported.

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Here...odels-have-slightly-different-screens_id44252
Wanted to update this thread...
So I got a replacement for the 2nd phone which had a yellow hue...but then when I got the 3rd phone and compared the screens, the yellow hue on the 2nd phone had gone away and the 3rd had the yellow hue.
So in my conclusion, it takes a few days - a week for the screen to break in.

Some what of a pink tint on screen

I've noticed that on white backgrounds such as Web browsing, there is slight pink tinting going on on the left side of my screen, and the lower bottom of the screen. However it is most apparent when using the keyboard, then the left side of the keyboard has a slight tint of pink and the other looks ok. I can't really use the demo store units a base to go off of, since those screens have burn in already from prolonged use. I did compare my friends note 4 to my screen, and his looked uniform (although a tiny yellow tint across the whole screen, but uniform). I value uniformity since that would not bug me. Anyone else notice this issue?

Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Well I received my replacement and I'm somewhat neutral about it. The condition is completely flipped now. The right side of my screen has a pink tint to it, except this time it doesn't extend from the side to almost half the screen like my older note did. The pink tint is somewhat more noticeable though, as in darker. Another thing I noticed was that this screen has a more noticeable screen flicker than the older one on max brightness over white backgrounds. I'll post pictures soon for you guys to see a difference. But at this point, I think I'm going to wait it out 15 days to wait on new stock to come then test my luck again.

Damn, that's terrible I would call tmobile right back and let them know they sent you a defective replacement device. But i t makes sense to wait as well.

Replacement Pixel looks horrible with Night Light Enabled

I got a replacement pixel and everything is great one it except one thing. When I enable Night Light it looks horrible. Both phones are running the same firmware, have the same apps installed, all the settings are the same but you can see the replacement looks horrible. It's only when night light mode is enabled though. Here is my replacement next to my current pixel and then the replacement next to my XL. All have Night Light enabled.
I'm trying to figure out why the replacement looks so bad, I mean night light is a software thing right? So it should look consistent. My current pixel next to the XL look pretty much the same.

Well, mine does exactly what the description on the bottom of the Nightlight settings page says. It turns an Amber hue closer to your replacement. Honestly the other phones don't look like the setting is enabled. I didn't see any amber hue in those pictures. What does the screen do on those devices when you toggle the option on and off? Do you notice any change at all?
Which is which? The one on the right that is orange is how it is supposed to look. The one on the left is broke or nit on night mode. This is not a slam, but google pixel night mode images and you will see the orange.
Ok, you said which was which. The pixel is broke not on, the XL is correct.

My og pixel and my XL are more amber than when night light is enabled but when they are side by side with the replacement it doesn't look like night light is on on both my pixel and my XL. They are definitely on dude.. I'm not some noob

Well the plot thickens.
Last time I had this conversation with someone my XL was VERY amber, like your XL is. I just looked again and it is like your Pixel.
Different versions...one on Feb and one on March? I'm on March.

And another clue. If I go into a darker room for a few seconds it goes much more amber than if i am in a well lit room.
Were both screenshots taken in the same light?

Noob or not. I was trying to help troubleshoot. As a matter of fact, based on your total posts and thanks I had assumed you were NOT a noob. The reason I went ahead said something is because we've all been there. Having trouble with something and troubleshooting it to no end when someone walks in and says... Is this supposed to be plugged in? (or some variation of that scenario)
Anyway, good luck.

Try flashing one from another phone. Here is my regular one and here is one I colored blue. Make a copy of your services.jar first.
I saw a similar post a few months ago. Same scenario. A replacement.

Well, I have a Pixel and one friend who has a Pixel and another who has a Pixel XL. They are all the same on night mode. Amber colored like the ones you posted. I could be wrong but I'm guessing the amber color is as it should be. In my mind, the idea of night mode isn't to make it pretty. It's to make it easier on the eyes. The bright white doesn't do that, the amber does. Which is right? I don't know for sure but i have to assume the amber is correct. White is hard on the eyes in the dark. Pretty or not.

I just took pictures of mine. One in the light and one in the dark. The amber one of his is way too dark. My picture in the dark looks like it isn't on. The one in the light has a light amber color. His isn't amber, it's gold.
Here is a video showing my original pixel (on the left) with my replacement pixel(on the right).
Note: Both running same fw with latest update, Both have adaptive brightness off, brightness to 100%.
You'll see, when I enable Night Light on my original Pixel, it's amber compared to the replacement which has it off. As soon as I enable it on the replacement it's sooooo amber that it makes the original not look amber at all. Same holds true when I compare the replacement pixel to my Pixel XL.
Original Pixel Left, Replacement Right

So mine behaves exactly as the one on the left. It starts out kind of orange then quickly adjusts. You can see it happening on your two. Your replacement clearly isnt doing that final adjustment.
You can fdr it but I think you got a dud for a replacement. IIRC the last time I saw this issue it was on a replacement also.

I'm going to unlock the bootloader and flashing the factory image the device shipped with initially and let it ota up to the latest an see if that changes anything.

So that didn't do anything. Still much more amber compared to my original. Guess I'm going to have to chat in with Google.

What's the best way to re-lock the pixel after unlocking ? Just flash the stock image, then oem lock, or do you reboot first, toggle the switch, then reboot into fastboot then lock ?
I talked to google and they are going to replace it. I told them I had pics and videos but they took my word for it. They said to send the replacement back and then once they get that back they can process an order for a new replacement

You can just do oem lock. It will wipe the device and it will be toggled off in Dev settings after it wipes/reboots

Oh nice, two replacements in a row. Do you have to send the replacement in or do you get to keep it?

Lol. He has to send it in. No way Google would let customers keep the "bad" ones lol. Or else the next 10 of mine also have nightlight issues

Build Quality Thread

I created this thread so we can discuss build quality of the essential and any issues/defects with the device. Let's hope Essential at least got QC right after getting so much wrong...
Just got my device. First thing I noticed was it has a little backlight bleeding. It's not horrible but there is a little there

I don't have any backlight bleed, but my screen does have quite a few dead pixels. Rest of the device seems really nice.

Ouch.. Yeah I'd definitely prefer to have a little backlight bleeding that I only see when the screen is black over dead pixels. Are you going to try to get a replacement?

Yeah, going to try and get a replacement. (or return within 15, if thats my only option) As Sloth mentioned - I don't imagine this will be an enjoyable experience.
Light bleed and dead pixels are not acceptable imo. I'll be sending mine back if it has any type of defects.

No, it's really not. I only notice it when the phone boots up. I emailed them to see what they said. In my experience with IPS displays, they have always had bleeding to some extent or another. LG was notorious for backlight bleeding on their older devices at least
The light bleed isn't that bad.
For dead pixels, how may dead pixels do you have? There is a certain number that is still within specifications. Also, are the deal pixels black or bright?
god, i hope dead pixels don't start to become an issue. in this day and age that's really a deal-breaker whether it's within specifications or not.
Light bleed would be a huge issue for me. Not for what i paid for this phone, and knowing the customer service they have. I'll just send it back.

In my experience, I think every IPS display I've had has had varying degrees of light bleed.
Dead pixels will drive me insane.

I have two completely dead pixels. Top center of the screen. You can see them with the phone completely off, which is odd. (Might be dust under the glass, though doesn't look like that)
I also have 3 stuck / super bright pixels. These are all clustered in the top right.
Build quality as in feel is great
Build quality as in workmanship is horrible.
Backlight bleed here too. Also:
Essential should have specified far better quality work for the titanium on this phone. It looks like Foxcon just used course grit sandpaper to round the edges of the phone and it both looks and feels terrible. It is such an annoyance that even after 2 days of use I still cant get used to it and every time I ahve the phone in my hand I feel like it is a piece of junk. I had originally decided to give it 2 days before I made up my mind about this but now after 2 days I still hate it too much. Ill give it the week but if I still cant get used to it then the phone is going back
You've said that but aren't showing us what you mean, does it look rough or just feel rough in the hand? Is it intentional to add grip or is it uneven and visually bad?
Maybe titanium has a more coarse feeling in the hand than machined aluminum since nothing else has used it before?
As for Dead Pixels, yea I don't care what the standard for acceptance is on that, if the number is =>1 I will send it back. Light bleed I can handle, but even a single pixel is a freaking eyesore on a $700 device. Hell No.
No company is immune from them but I will not accept it from any. Heck I got a $39 tablet from the Windows Store with a 1920x1200 screen and it had a bunch. Got it replaced (I think Just the screen as it looks like its been opened/put together again lol) but the replacement screen is perfect now.
