In the new KitKat unofficial versions of Cyanogenmod there are versions with hboot 2.15 and 2.16.
Are there any advantages/differences between the HBOOT versions, except that you can flash different sense (sense4/5) roms on top of this?
For example battery consumption or something else.

Hi,
I am not sure about the Hboot version at all.
I am using EU S4 with 2.15 Hboot
I use MaximusHD - JB 4.2 with Sense 5
When I tried CM it worked fine but the GUI is lame...
Can I combine CM with sense 5 together somehow?
(BTW - recovery should be CWM, the others caused bootloops after flashing ROMs)
Thanks

It's only recently that this has happened, so I don't think there are any obvious differences with running the same ROM on different hboot versions. As the ROM's become more stable we will be able to see if there are any differences. The new 2.16 hboot has a different partition layout which allocates more space for apps. That is generally not the reason people have upgraded, it's because the 2.16 hboot is required to install MaximusHD ROM.

Using MaximusHD means you updated the firmware, you're on 2.16 hboot.
I am afraid you are not correct

Yes I did,
One thing - when I connect USB cable I can see only 2 GB storage.
I don't think it is related to the S-on thing, probably can be fixed with repartitioning or something...
BTW
I am not very satisfied with the level of battery consamption but I don't believe it has anything to do with S on or off.
Everything else is great. sense 5 is way better than sense 4+

Hi Guys,
Couple of questions:
- If you update from Hboot 2.15 to 2.16, do you have to flash a ROM immediately afterwards? or will the Phone boot from current ROM?
- I know you can flash 2.15 ROM's to 2.16 Hboot when you flash boot.img afterwards. Is there a way to flash a 2.16 ROM to 2.15 Hboot?
I'd like to try a ROM that's for 2.16 but i'd rather stay at 2.15 I think.
Thanks for the help.
Hello everyone,
After a few month with the maximus rom i wanted to test out the new Cyanogenmod rom 11 on my htc one s.
But when i try flashing it with the recovery, it fails. I heard, that i have to downgrade something in order to get the new Rom installed. What must I do?
I have been reading a lot of topics without finding a concrete answer.
I am S-ON (No superCID) and I have TWRP 2.4.1 and Hboot 2.16
How can I install CM11 successfully ?
Thx

Aquire S-Off and SuperCID . This makes things ten times more easier . There are recent thread posts in Android development that show you how .
You will have to actually update your hboot to 2.15 and implement a twrp that supports SElinux.
1 ) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322755
Use that to upgrade your hboot.
2 ) http://flemmard.net/recoveries/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-ville-selinux.img
Download and flash this recovery.
3 ) http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=ville
Get the latest nightly from the get.cm
... and flash away

To make it s-off which méthode should i use? Facepalm or moonshine?

S-Off First, Cause that's what enables you to install different RUU's and update/downgrade firmware.
Try Facepalm
.. and for superCID, use one of the toolkit's. that one's a bit easier

You have hboot 2.16 not 1.16. What I suggest is before downgrading, try one of CM11 builds for 2.16. They're compiled by RockR172 for 2.16 and they're based on official builds. Latest available is the one from 20/12 and you'll find it in the second post from the CM11 thread. If you find then CM11 comfortable to use, you could downgrade your hboot to 2.15 and start using the official nightlies.

This unofficial Rom will also work with s-off if i use "Incase you don't have S-OFF, fastboot flash boot boot.img" or won't it?

For the next step:
How can I downgrade hboot then? must i have to lock and then unlock it again with HTCdev?
Must i be s-off and supercid?

Yes. That was the one I told you about. In the second post, you'll find links to the 2.16 builds. The latest one is THIS. That step for flashing kernel in fastboot is mandatory for anyone that's S-On, for any ROM and for any hboot higher than 1.09. So after you flash that ROM, reboot to fastboot and flash the boot.img (that you have previously extracted from the ROM zip) using that command.
For downgrade, there a couple of threads describing the procedure in the Dev section, there's no need to repeat all this at this point. Fist flash this CM and see if you are OK with it...not to find later that you've downgraded and now you want MaximusHd back. Going from sense based ROMs to non-sense based ROMs was a challenge for many and there are alot of things that differs. That's why I said you might want to check first and only after take such decision
I just compiled a recent CM11 version (0109-nightly) for hboot 2.16. You can download it from
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0ajti88ZAFzYkZqNEVydkZwSzg/edit?usp=sharing
if you want. Its compiled from the official CM11 sources where additionally two cherry picks
are necessary to support the new hboot and TWRP recovery
http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/53647/
http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/53559/
Edit: Note that this build is ONLY for HBOOT 2.16 !!!
If you are s-on you still have to extract the kernel (boot.img) from the archive and flash it via fastboot after
flashing the zip. Alternatively you can use the FlashImageGUI app (from play store). In this case flash the boot.img BEFORE
you flash the rom zip. Worked great for me when I was still s-on and you don't need a computer to flash a
new rom.

This thread is very confusing!
Firstly the OP must be S-Off to flash the 2.16 firmware in order to run MaximusHD with the right storage etc, no? Might be confused thinking superCID is S-Off? Also, TWRP version must be 2.6.1.0 not 2.4.1?

I wasn't confused. I really was S-On with twrp 2.4.1 and it worked well
Now i'am back on hboot 2.15 and i flashed CWM in order to flash CM11.
For maximusHD on hboot 2.16 and S-ON I just followed the tutorial : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2445392
I know it may sound confusing, but maximusHD worked for me on S-ON, and it has been my daily Rom for over 3 months.
When i installed it, I just couldnt run the firmware.zip (i had a fail) but it worked correctly without.

Ok, the thing is it's the firmware.zip that gives you a hboot version of 2.16. So if you didn't flash that, you were on a lower hboot, you can still flash the ROM I believe but you only have 2gb of storage available. Anyway, It doesn't matter now. Enjoy CM11.
CM nightly on 2.16 firmware works great for me. Updated to 0110 in the meanwhile and I only have the known bugs like backlight not coming
up after a phone call and very rare reboots (indeed no reboot on 0110 since now :fingers-crossed: )
There are indeed lots of people who installed MaximusHD on hboot 2.16 with s-on over in the MaximusHD thread. It's very dangerous though
and may lead to bricked devices ...

Hello,
i'm having a lot of trouble with the viper made rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2667758). I'm new here, so i cannot post it there.
My problems began when i try to install the updates. I have installed the original rom version 3.0.0. i get the OTA message, but when i try to install it in recovery, the phone can't mount the sd card, and the installation doesn't continu. I tried to do it manually (using the download link i found in one of the posts) and that seemed to work.
Then i got another OTA notification, to upgrade to version 3.1.0, but when i tried to boot after the installation, i couldn't enter my sim pincode, and when i reboot, the phone keeps looping. I have to install the original rom twice (once with and one time without wiping) before the ROM boots normally.
What am i doing wrong?
i'm on Hboot 1.25 and radio:1.15.50.05.29
I'm S-on (RL)
It seems that viper made a fll rom, with the updates included.
Wrong Hboot?

I'm not sure but i think it starts with your Hboot, maybe one of the older members can verify, but according to the rom it requires Hboot version 2.15 or 2.16.

If you're S-OFF ist possible I think
No, you don't need to update the hboot. I am on 1.06 and Viper works fine...in fact any ROM works fine for me but that's another story. The updated firmware (2.13 or 2.15) is required only for Android 4.4.x KitKat due to a check present in the updater-script. There's no such check nor requirement for previous Android versions and Viper 3.x is based on Android 4.2.2
The problems first could come from not being S-Off...this makes impossible to flash the kernel from recovery so any OTA that has a kernel is not flashed properly. I remember that 3.1.0 has also a full ROM ZIP, maybe is good if you flash that one from recovery and flash the kernel after that in fastboot. Also it could matter the recovery you're using, I would recommend latest TWRP

3. Why do i have to flash boot.img? And why do i not have to flash a boot.img with s-off? Where do i get the boot.img for the rom i flashed?

1: I run CM11 which is 4.4.
2: Don't know but not sure if there is a 4.4 ROM with Sense 5.
3: The boot.img is in the ROM zip - just unzip it and the boot.img is there. When you are S-OFF the boot.img is flashed with the zip. Otherwise you have to do it manually if you are not S-OFF.
I am no expert but one thing I know - life got a lot easier being S-OFF with the HTC ONE S.

Let's take one by one...
1. Yes. Currently only AOSP ROMs are with Android 4.4.2, there's no Sense based one (but it's been working on it)
2. Well, that's a tricky question...You don't need S-Off for sense 5.x BUT...only ROM with sense 5.5 is Liberty (by bilal_liberty). If you're not S-Off you can't flash radios. If you can't flash radios, you will not have HSPA/HSPA+ mobile data connection with that ROM (and probably with sense 6 and 4.4.2 ROM also). You will get maximum 3G (UMTS) mobile data with your current radio. On the other hand, if you decide to try an AOSP ROM, you won't have that problem there. You can be S-On and have everything working
3. You have to flash boot.img only if you're S-On. Maybe it's better if you read what S-On/S-Off means. On short, if you're S-On, some partitions are read only and you cannot write to them in recovery...most important the radio partition and the kernel/boot partition. So if you're S-On you can't flash the radio and you can't flash the kernel. Kernel has several components (I try to make a simple explanation not entering in the details): modules, ramdisk and the kernel itself. I'll take them one by one:
- modules: most are incorporated in the ROM and have the extension .so. These files are flashed on the device in the /system partition along with the ROM, in recovery. You don't need to be S-Off to have those installed
- ramdisk & kernel: they're both packed in that boot.img and they're generically referred to as "kernel". These are written in a special partition that is read-only for S-On devices while in recovery. Kernel partition is in write-mode only in fastboot. Therefore you must be S-Off to be able to write kernel from recovery OR, you have to write it from fastboot if you're S-On
So, when you flash a ROM ZIP, the install script writes the modules along with the rest of the ROM since those resides on the /system partition then tries to write also the boot.img. But in case you're S-On, it can't. So the only way to do it is from fastboot where you separately flash the boot.img
Now as I give you some info, take some time and read it (TWICE). Then take some time and look for the tutorials here. First thing you should do is to unlock your bootloader via HTC Dev site. Then you can install a recovery and make S-Off (I personally used for that Rumrunner but it's your call)
Before doing anything, install Android SDK and make sure it's properly installed and the drivers are working. You should have a functional ADB/fastboot for any of the above.

2. So i have to update my firmware, right?
3. okay, i understood everything.. thank you
Why do i need the complete SDK? Doesn´t it work just with the adb and fastboot drivers?

You don't have to upgrade the firmware since you're on the latest official one. 2.16 is an unofficial leaked firmware and you only need it if you want to flash MaximusHD or MagioRom
You don't need entire SDK but I thought it's easier since is an install package for that. Of course, if you don't build for Android, you don't need the libraries, just the tools

For firmware ZIPs you can flash in recovery AFTER you make S-Off, check HERE. For S-Off I used Rumrunner cause it seems to me much easier and without so many steps...it's something like a one-click operation

I didn't checked the MaximusHD tutorial but I strongly suggest you to just flash the firmware zip if you want to do an upgrade/downgrade of the firmware. Most tutorials assume you're initial S-Off and include also some steps for how to acquire this or going through RUUs.
OK..I've read the MaximusHD tutorial, it's pretty much identical with the one made by Flashalot...so the answer is YES, you can use it and after that you would have hboot 2.16. Please also note that a different recovery must be used with 2.16 ROMs. But you'll have that in the MaximusHD instructions as well
NO, you can't run or flash ROMs made for 2.15 firmware after doing this. You should downgrade the firmware to 2.15 first, by using the instructions and the firmware ZIP from the thread I've linked

could you please give me a link to a recovery that is compatible with 2.16? TWRP would be perfect
After installing the new hboot i have still a rom for 2.15 running on my phone. does this work? Does updating the firmware wipe internal storage?
Why do some sense 5 roms work with hboot 2.15 and others not?

Oh...you like to ask soo many questions don't you? All these questions are already answered in the threads, why don't you check them?
The main difference between 2.15 and 2.16 hboot/firmware is the partition map. On 2.16 there is no separation between the sdcard and data and you get a single big space for both. This makes more space available to data and sdcard looks bigger (12 GB instead of 10 GB). That's a brief description not entering in details. ROMs made for 2.15 will work on 2.16 and the other way around BUT with issues. Mainly it is about the sdcard size that is not available at all or has an incorect size (48 MB instead of 12/10 GB). So even if your 2.15 ROM is working...try to check if the sdcard is mounted and what space you have on it
So all these being said, your understanding of the word "works" is different from the one of the devs. For them (or for anyone else), a "working" ROM does not mean only it boots, but it's also have all the parts available including sdcard mountable and available on it's entire space, not truncated to 48 MB or not mountable at all.
Now about why some sense 5 ROMs work with 2.15 and some don't. Because some ROMs are based on the leaked 2.16 firmware and those ROMs need the new partition map to properly work. The ones that are working on 2.15 are usually ports or builds made for the standard official HTC firmware.
Link for recoveries compatible with 2.16 hboot you can find in the OP of each 2.16 ROM

I think i will stay on 2.15 and install ViperOne S 3.1.3 now. This will work on my current setup, right?
I will update the radio. Should i just flash the one attached in the ViperOne S thread in recovery?

Good choice, Viper is a fine ROM and close to the original since it's sense based...also has extra customization that the original ROM doesn't have.
For the radio, well I've answered to you in the Viper thread. I would advice not to flash another radio just now. Flash the ROM, play with it for a few days then decide. If you have no issues with signal reception, wifi and so on, you don't have real reasons to change it.
I had initially (when I bought the device) radio 1.06es (I think)...since then alot of newer versions came out including the 1.20 from the leaked 2.16 firmware and the newest 1.35a from the One XL. To be honest, after several days with each, I've switched back to 1.15 that was the best radio for me.
The only ROM for which you MUST flash a different radio will be Liberty by bilal_liberty. That is based on Android 4.3 and Sense 5.5 and the newest 1.35a radio is needed in order to get H/H+ (HSPA) mobile data connection. If you don't use that radio you'll get maximum 3G (UMTS) connection. The rest will work tho
I still don't understand why I had so many problems with Viper. Dropped calls, random reboots etc...
Once I got CM11 running - never looked back in terms of reliability.

Needs
- s-off to install radio and firmware
- firmware 2.15
- kernel included in the rom
- hboot ...this is redundant. hboot is the same as firmware
- radio 1.35a. if you don't install this radio you won't have HSPA/HSPA+ mobile data, you will be limited to 3G (UMTS) speeds.
install procedure
- install recovery from OP (or official TWRP 2.7.0.0)
- flash firmware 2.15 (if needed)
- flash radio 1.35a
- full wipe
- flash ROM

If you had MaximusHD check your hboot again. MaximusHD requires 2.16 hboot and most of the ROMs are for 2.15. You might need either to search only for ROMs made for 2.16 (these are fewer) or to downgrade hboot to 2.15 in order to flash majority of the ROMs. Also for hboot 2.16 it is needed a special modded recovery, the official TWRP is not OK
If you want just Liberty, then you have to be sure you choose in Aroma Installer the 2.16 hboot and I think you need to use the same recovery you used for MaximusHD. Sorry but you didn't specified from start that you're on hboot 2.16. I would have told you that in this case you should keep the recovery you used for MaximusHD

No, you're fine to go as you are. Liberty is the single ROM as I know, that has in Aroma installer option for 2.15 or 2.16 hboot. So you could use with your current one as well, no need to downgrade. 2.15 will be needed if you want to flash other ROMs, mainly AOSP KitKat ones

I'm sorry man, i've got a question! I'm S-ON HBOOT 2.15. Before flashing that rom i had CM 10.2. Few days ago i decided to try this one and when aroma started i has so happy. During the installation aroma asked me to install the radio 1.35.... for LTE data connection and i did it....but now i realize why my connection data stay at everytime only on G. Is that the reason?? I am 1.11.50.05.28_10.27.50.08L , is that because i have no any 3G H H+ data connection?? How can i fix it?? Can you please help me??
Yes, this is the reason. Being S-On, you cannot flash radios. Aroma doesn't know that and tries to install but it can't (and doesn't give an error either I think). Based on what you said, you're still on 1.11 radio and you cannot have mobile data speeds higher than UMTS with that radio. You will need 1.35 radio for that.
This is valid for Liberty ROM only. For other ROMs your radio is ok and you could reach higher speeds
As I previously said, only way is to try one of the methods to gain S-Off and then you can flash that radio. There's no other way unfortunately
