I am considering moving away from sense 5 to a kitkat Rom of some sort. I know that the sense camera is the best around but of course this is not available for non sense Roms.
Can anyone recommend a good camera app? I would like the option of taking hdr shots and panoramic. Also I'm interested in photosphere.
Maybe the stock kitkat camera is good.. I don't know yet as I haven't worked up the courage to downgrade hboot to 2.15...
All recommendations welcome

That's a tough one. There might not be any true replacement for the sense camera. I just installed Beanstalk 4.4 ROM and I found the stock camera to be horrible. Instead I am using Camera MX. I even tested the two side-by-side while I was still running sense and I would say that camera MX is pretty comparable for standard shots. Unfortunately it doesn't do panorama.
I am also hoping to try ProCapture which DOES do panorama.

CM10/AOKP may not have the Sense camera, but the the Play store seems to have some viable alternatives. What camera Apps would you guys recommend for the HOX?
Running AOKP Build 3 if that makes any difference.

If you are looking for something similar in quality to the Sense cam, I think you may be out of luck. It has to do with the camera framework being specific to Sense. AOKP and AOSP roms don't have the same integration to 'unlock' the same quality. Or so the internet told me
AOSP does not have the same drivers for the camera/camcorder hardware that Sense has. HTC made the drivers specifically for Sense, and specifically for the camera that the HOX has, so obviously, the Sense camera will ALWAYS be better.
AOSP ROMs are currently using an open-source camera/camcorder driver, so yes it can be improved and the possibility IS there for it to be just as good, if not better, than the Sense camera, but it is VERY hard since HTC doesn't help out at all

Both of you are missing the point, reread the op he is asking for a alternative camera for aosp as the stock one sucks
Try to find the miui camera. Its much better than the aosp one

Sorry for my noobness... but I flashed the paranoid ROM for my one S, the ROM is awesome except I don't like the new camera UI(It has a solid bar that takes up 1/4 of the screen, just for the shot button...), and I don't know if its possible to change this?
Another thing is how am I able to get beats Audio after custom ROM?
thanks in advance!
Paranoid is based of CM10/9 (main point is its stock android) so you will not be able to use the sense camera as it requires the sense framework. Basically, the camera requires HTC's proprietary camera drivers that are only available in sense-based roms like viper. Unless some magical developer with amazing skills comes along, it will never be possible. Now for beats, i have a solution and its called Awesomebeats.

i personally don't like it as i prefer a flat sound without any EQ changes but whatever, to each there own.
Hope i helped
Thanks! that helps a lot!
so if im not mistaken, it means that basically all the stock CM9/10's camera UI has that huge bar taking over the screen, and resulting smaller pictures?
what if I install some third party camera software and use those instead, do I get the same basic performance(pic quality) from my camera?
Didn't virtuous team achieve something like this over in the sensation boards? Basicly a real senseless Rom that kept the camera but replaced basicly everything else with aosp stuff all within the HTC framework? That would be really interesting if someone can achieve that for us since we all love aosp but want to keep the camera

Yes and no. Im going to assume that when you took your pictures on sense, you left the widescreen setting, meaning the pictures you took with the sense camera are actually smaller. When left in widescreen, they cropped from the top and bottom resulting in a 6 MP widescreen shot. The AOSP camera takes the full 8 MP. Dont be fooled by the aspect ratio

Yea but too bad the quality ain't the same, google should really consider better cameras for stock I mean that's all a nexus device really lacks anyways

This is really one of the biggest drivers for people sticking with sense-based ROMs over AOSP and/or AOKP-based ROMs.
So, if you want the stock camera - look at the sense-based ROMs on the forum.

well i did extensive tests, both low and well lit situations, quality is the same. As a matter of fact, maybe even slightly better on AOSP. There is less compression, and can be seen when zoomed in. The only difference between the AOSP camera and Sense is the speed and functionality. And if youre using a Nexus, the speed of the camera is insanely fast. Look up videos on youtube, the nexus has a good camera.
Change to the viperone s Rom its great and you keep the camera from the original Rom

Does the camera quality of our phone depend on what Rom we use.
I was on viper 2.0.0 and camera was great even front facing was great too.
But when I switched to trickdroid tmobile version quality went down.
Anyone else?

Camera quality is higher in stock roms 'cause drivers for the special image chip are only for stock. Thats why you see lack of quality comparing aosp rom photos with stock rom photos.

Should work on all One S and One X phones that are Sense based.
From what dzo (the recognized camera expert for the HOS) says, there is no difference in quality between shots taken using the stock camera or even AOSP. I have noticed some speed and feature differences in the cameras, but the photos look close to stock for me on AOSP based ROMs.
The difference lies with how the camera app saves and compresses the image, if it applies any filter etc etc.

Definitely. Stock takes a much smaller picture, more square-sized, and is quite often blurred on mine. Sweep panorama is the only upside to the stock Android camera.
184 is from sense

It has HDR but it's not that good and often appears blurry because the camera drivers aren't perfect yet
I really like the camera functions and modes on the stock TW. However I have been trying out various AOSP roms and I feel that the camera quality is not the same and the modes for the AOSP camera dont seem to work very well like the TW do. Has anybody compared them? Or is it just my imagination?
Aosp camera is not as good as tw one

This has always been the case for me. It sucks since I do enjoy aosp. But the Samsung camera on the s4 is really nice.

I was in the same situation with my old htc inspire. The sense roms had the best camera but the aosp, aokp, even miui couldn't compare.

I wish there was a way to get the best of both!
AT&T S4
When I had an AOSP rom running, I clearly noticed the downgrade in camera performance. For one thing, AOSP took about 1-2 seconds to snap a shot, whereas the TW rom (which I now have loaded) was pretty much instantaneous. The quality of the photos was lacking on the AOSP rom as well.
Yeah that would be awesome to have a TW camera version on AOSP, because I really do like everything else about AOSP.

You aren't alone.
I loved using aokp by task but unfortunately the camera was sluggish and slow compared to tw camera.
So I switched over to cleanrom which is essentially stock with all the bloatware gone. Thankfully scott was able to make it happen. Even now, I am using tw camera. I could care less all the features in tw camera but the quality and speed are very nice compared to aokp's.
one of the reasons I'm sticking with a TW rom.
As much as i love the camera on TW, I just can't stand the legginess on tw.

AOSP camera has and will always be garbage. That's the only thing that keeps me coming back to TW or any stock rom on my devices. it just so awful, there's really no comparison between any stock rom camera and the garbage AOSP camera.

You can download and install the Nexus Experience camera (without ROOT may I add) on your stock rom. It works perfectly. I really love the fact that I can use my TW camera and when I feel like using PhotoSphere or something I can just open the other camera. You can download the file in the link below. Just installs like any other APK

The aosp camera takes just as good of quality photos as the touchwiz variant. If you doubt this statement then show me proof. I use cm10.1 on this device and I've got a pretty good knack for photography owning a nicer Sony nex.. So understanding the settings and your environment is most important to capturing a good photo.
Guys, don't believe the fluff around the touchwiz camera, its not any better - its the same hardware and that's what matters.

So what youre saying is that I will get the same exact picture with either camera? I have tested the newer AOSP cameras and it has gotten better but I think on a few modes, like for example night mode, pictures do come out better on TW. Please clarify this because im itching to stay on AOSP and the camera is one of the biggest falls for me to stay on TW.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Any comparison must include not only sample pictures/video but also account for the user experience while in the camera app. If AOSP cameras take longer to focus and snap pictures, that means the experience using the camera is worse than on TW, even if the actual pictures are equal in quality. It's all subjective anyway. (objective? I always mix those two up)
Comparing the two is like trying to compare SLCD to Super AMOLED screens. You will never ever get everyone to agree one is better than the other and the debates will go on and on.
