[Q] Using the nexus 5 with only a screen protector? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Usually I use a case, but after a terrible experience with a spek case on my old s4, I'm thinking about only using a screen protector on my nexus 5? Any opinions? I do drop my phone, but not often and usually from 4 ft at most. I'm thinking about one of those zagg screen protectors...

I've found that since gorilla glass 2 screen protectors are a thing of the past. I haven't used one on my last two phones and I have no scratches on them. I usually use just a slim tpu case and no screen protector.

Guess it just depends on what is a more horrible experience : whatever happened with your last case or coughing up a bare minimum $150 to fix the screen if you break it. Not that it's guaranteed you won't break your phone with a case, but your odds certainly improve.

Case is the most important. SP will save you a few scratches over time where as a case might save you $350.

Protected or naked?

Do you have your blaze covered with screen protectors and a case or you like and feel safe enough to use it naked?
Just curious need some opinions I feel like removing my screen protector.

Normally I buy a screen protector and case before even receiving a phone, but in this case I purchased the phone before there were many accessories available for it. After having it for nearly 3 months without a screen protector or case, it has not accumulated any scratches on the screen and only has one tiny scratch near the top of the chrome bezel.
I have yet to find a case I like, one that doesn't have a cutout for the MicroSD card slot.
These are the droids you're looking for:

I've always wanted to say that.
I would use a screen protector, but I really suck at the installations... so whatever. My phone still hasn't any scratches. As for the case... I just LOVE the feel and grip of the Blazes' own back cover. Can't get enough of it.
I've had several devices that feature Gorilla Glass, just like the Blaze. When I water damaged my Droid 1, I purposely took a pocketknife, keys, etc. to the screen to see if i could scratch it, with essentially no results (very very light scratching with ridiculous amount of pressure). The stuff is EXTREMELY scratch resistant. The only times I've heard of appreciable scratching on a GG screen is if you get sand rubbing against it (say you were careless when you took it to the beach), which is extremely hard. You should be just fine protector-less.
I bought a D3O screen protector for it along with a nice screen protector. It wasn't cheap, but it was well worth he investment.

Blaze does not use Gorilla Glass, although it uses something just as strong.
I would highly recommend a screen protector. It can crack and scratch. Trust Me.
I made sure to purchase an InvisibleShield prior to ordering the phone and then apply it immediately out of the box before initial startup. Whether or not that's necessary I can't say (I can really only imagine it being 'necessary' to customers that admit to being accident-prone), but the added assurance doesn't hurt.
I did the same. I took it off though and the naked feeling with only a case is much worth an accidental scratch or two, which I still have none

I've tried a few different things since I got this phone a couple months ago. I've had a screen protector on it since day one. I don't remember the brand, it was one of those "cut to size"ones. Apparently I had bought it from the T-Mobile store several years ago with my blackberry curve.
I'm currently using the Prozkin case which was discussed and reviewed in the accessories section. Solid case that adds minimum bulk.

I've had my blaze naked since fathers day. Dropped it pretty hard a couple of times and only got minor scratches and chips on the chrome strip. No screen scratches at all either.

Naked
I don't have a screen protector or case on it. I have dropped it several times and it has a few little scratches on the bezel. Normally I have my phones protected to the max, this one not so much..I kinda miss my Vibrant

will a tempered glass cover be possible?

Tempered glass screen covers seem like the best but are the even going to be any for this phone because of the curved screen?
This is what I want too. I want protection but I still want the slickness of glass. I don't see why the curves would prevent it. Perhaps it may not fit if the curves are slightly off.

Someone will make it eventually, but to me tempered glass covers for phones and tablets are a waste of money because a replacement screen is still cheaper, not to mention the fact that you are still putting another layer of glass on your phone.

Because of the way the screen is designed, you wouldn't be putting as much glass on as you would with any other phone, another layer of glass would make this phone feel like any other phone in terms of touch responsiveness.

Unfortunately because the nexus 4 digitizer is attached to the LCD panel I don't believe it will be replaceable that cheaply. As ifixit notes "The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame. So don't crack the glass unless you're good with a heat gun, or you're fond of replacing the glass, display, and frame together ($$$)"
my gf's SGII screen has a crack and they quote 218 bucks for the replacement screen... and that's on a old SGII!
now we have these new kind of screens so replacing a 200+ bucks on a screen? might as well just buy a new N4 while you're at it!
Not quite available yet, but Nexus 4 Ultra Shield Tempered Glas - Black
Can't wait for one of these to be released , I'll finally feel like my n4 is completely protected

For anyone looking at comparing the prices between a new screen and the glass protector, a new screen assembly cost $100 brand new. Id rather put a $30 investment on a screen protector than spend 3 times that because i was stupid.

Would love to see a Glas.t get released for these as my note has had one ever since they were released. Worth the money I felt for the protection.,

I agree man when I had my note (with the sgp glass) I got it jammed in my trunk, it was squished in between my car frame and the trunk door, when I finally got it out the only thing that was damaged was the tempered glass Haha it spider webbed and when I pealed it off no other damage

Screen protector necessary?

Hullo,
I just ordered my Nexus 4 :victory:and I'm wondering if I will need a screen protector for it, or if I should be safe.
Currently, I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G (NOT S4) and the glass on it (Gorilla Glass, I believe?) is perfect. I have not gotten a single scratch on it without a protector of any kind, and I work in a machine shop with metal chips and dust all over the place. My old Galaxy SII got scratched before I even brought it to work, however, so I know some of these are super fragile.
I'd love to know peoples' opinions on the matter because I don't like putting a protector on if I don't have to!
Well I have had my phone about 7 months with just a bumper on and both the body and screen like its brand new
Saying that I work in an office, so its less likely to get as scratched as your place of work!
Not necessary but highly suggested. Why risk it? Small scratches won't affect usability but will affect resale value.

I usually just throw on a clear screen protector, SGP is only brand I buy for screen protectors now.
Highly recommended.
At first I thought only 1 screen protector would suffice, but when I went out a lot and stuff just came in to my pocket like sand, dirt, etc, my screen got scratched (because of the sand, went to the beach), so I removed it, thank god the scratch is only on the screen protector. Now I bought 3. When I remove my screen protector, my N4 looks like it's brand new.
I agree with ibarra .. Buy it to be safe

Every phone needs a protector and the rear needs one too to avert future damage or collisions with surfaces. Resale value is better maintained in pristine condition, this is why I hate seeing used devices looking as if they just returned from war.

for a couple of bucks you protect the screen on the $300+ device .Absolutely, yes, sir.
Not worth it if you're a very safe person. Theres gorilla glass for a reason, but if you're not a careful person.... sure why not.
Mine has been naked since December and the glass is fine. I do have a dent in my bezel, but I fell asleep with the phone in my hand and it dropped. A bumper would have prevented that, but no issues with the glass even with the drop.

If you have ever kept them with other things in your pocket, etc, then yes, it is highly recommended. If you have ever dropped any of you phones, then get a bumper or full body case as well.
I always use screen protectors and cases and I highly recommend others to do the same. It isn't worth scratching or damaging your phone in any way. Better safe than sorry, and honestly, any cheap old screen protector will do.
keep factory screen protector for the back or buy a case, the front is fine if u take care of your phone and not put it in the same pocket as ys and everything else
Nope. Ruins the feel of the device honestly.

So, just a quick follow up..
I ended up purchasing a Skinomi screen protector to be safe, but after having it on for a day, I hastily removed it based solely on the look and feel.
I have been running my phone with either the official bumper or my Ringke Fusion case and no protector and everything is still beautiful!

Gorilla glass 3

I've had my phone for about 2 weeks and the Damn screen is scratched already, I'm always careful, i had my Nexus 4 for 6 months before i scratched that one. Defective screen? Is not like i dropped it
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
That sucks. It's not scratch proof though. Any speck of sand or grit in your pocket will scratch the screen.
screen protector...ALWAYS....
Gorilla Glass 3 is only 4% stronger than GG2.

Literally the very first thing I do when I remove the phone from the box is use a screen protector. Then I put a case on it, then I root it.
The screen is not defective, Gorilla Glass 3 scratches just like any other screen.
Mine too lol it's barely visible but it is there.

Same exact order here too. ?? protector, case, root.
More then likely it is a scratching to the coating on top of the screen then the glass itself though of course that is always possible with anything of the same hardness.

Same for me as well
it always should be emphasized. i ordered casing with screen protector first even before buying the phone. so that they are ready for installation on day zero.
I've always kept my phones bare. It's just me I don't like cases or protectors it takes away from the look and feel. I've always been careful and I never had a scratch until now. Its very light and you notice it when there is a reflection. It sucks but that's what you get when you don't use anything. Knock on wood!!

Scratch resistant is NEVER equal to scratch proof.
It would be nice to see some self healing love on screens though.

With how thin some of these glass protectors are now, they're unnoticeable. I've got a Spigen glas.tr nano. Feels and looks like the regular screen

Weak Glass/Screen on N5

Why is the screen so weak on the N5? I've had mine for 9 days and it got a hairline crack from mid right side to all the way to bottom left. It was never dropped. It has a cruzerlite case on it. Only thing is that I bumped into a desk while the phone was in my pocket with the case on it. It still doesn't make sense for the screen to get hairline crack since the case prevents the screen from being the first thing to touch a surface. Otherwise, I can't think of any other reason for it to crack. Most of the time the phone is kept face up on tables/desks around the house. At work, it's in my pocket.
It's scratch resistant not scratch proof

Hes talking about a crack
Anyway its a risk reduction not risk proof
I've owned like 8 android phones (all flagship) over the past 4 years. All were dropped few times without breaking/damaging the screen, there weren't any cases or screen protectors on those either. Compared to those others, this nexus is so much more fragile. I've googled this issue and it seems common for the N5 to have screen damage with bare minimum stress.
Ordered my phone the day it was announce... Received it a few days later. Never put a screen protector on any of my phones. And my n5's screen looks the same as the day I got it.

I've dropped mine multiple times and it looks like new. No screen protector. Spigen Slim Armor case
Sounds like you just got unlucky. It happens. Some people have dropped their phone (in general not just the N5) from like 2 feet and it shattered. While other from higher and all it does it dent or chip. This is why I always use glass screen protectors regardless.
Its pretty simple really, the bigger the screen gets, the more unsupported area there is and the more likely it is to break on impact. All you can do is be careful

If you're getting a phone with a large glass front on contract I'd always recommend getting an insurance add-on if your carrier offers it, mine is like €10 a month and I feel like it's worth it for the peace of mind alone. Though my judgement might not be the most sound - I've insured my phone and my dogs but I don't even have my own health insurance...
Yah ! You should better have a case outside to protect the screen. I'm using Zerolemon case

The phone did have a case on it (Cruzerlite), which doesn't allow the screen to touch surfaces if you lay it face down.
I was surprised since the phone was NOT dropped. It was just bumped into a table (not even the edge) while in my pocket.
Get some tempered glass the thicker the better as it absorbs more shocks try get the 0.30mm or 0.40mm 0.10mm and 0.15mm break easily.
My phone fell and to my shock the tempered glass broke but not the actual screen glass and I think it was the tempered glass that saved it paired with a tpu case
