Screen protector necessary? - Nexus 4 Accessories

Hullo,
I just ordered my Nexus 4 :victory:and I'm wondering if I will need a screen protector for it, or if I should be safe.
Currently, I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G (NOT S4) and the glass on it (Gorilla Glass, I believe?) is perfect. I have not gotten a single scratch on it without a protector of any kind, and I work in a machine shop with metal chips and dust all over the place. My old Galaxy SII got scratched before I even brought it to work, however, so I know some of these are super fragile.
I'd love to know peoples' opinions on the matter because I don't like putting a protector on if I don't have to!

Well I have had my phone about 7 months with just a bumper on and both the body and screen like its brand new
Saying that I work in an office, so its less likely to get as scratched as your place of work!

Not necessary but highly suggested. Why risk it? Small scratches won't affect usability but will affect resale value.

I usually just throw on a clear screen protector, SGP is only brand I buy for screen protectors now.

Highly recommended.
At first I thought only 1 screen protector would suffice, but when I went out a lot and stuff just came in to my pocket like sand, dirt, etc, my screen got scratched (because of the sand, went to the beach), so I removed it, thank god the scratch is only on the screen protector. Now I bought 3. When I remove my screen protector, my N4 looks like it's brand new.

I agree with ibarra .. Buy it to be safe

Every phone needs a protector and the rear needs one too to avert future damage or collisions with surfaces. Resale value is better maintained in pristine condition, this is why I hate seeing used devices looking as if they just returned from war.

for a couple of bucks you protect the screen on the $300+ device .Absolutely, yes, sir.

Not worth it if you're a very safe person. Theres gorilla glass for a reason, but if you're not a careful person.... sure why not.

Mine has been naked since December and the glass is fine. I do have a dent in my bezel, but I fell asleep with the phone in my hand and it dropped. A bumper would have prevented that, but no issues with the glass even with the drop.

If you have ever kept them with other things in your pocket, etc, then yes, it is highly recommended. If you have ever dropped any of you phones, then get a bumper or full body case as well.

I always use screen protectors and cases and I highly recommend others to do the same. It isn't worth scratching or damaging your phone in any way. Better safe than sorry, and honestly, any cheap old screen protector will do.

keep factory screen protector for the back or buy a case, the front is fine if u take care of your phone and not put it in the same pocket as ys and everything else

Nope. Ruins the feel of the device honestly.

So, just a quick follow up..
I ended up purchasing a Skinomi screen protector to be safe, but after having it on for a day, I hastily removed it based solely on the look and feel.
I have been running my phone with either the official bumper or my Ringke Fusion case and no protector and everything is still beautiful!

[Q] OK with no screen protector or case?

I've had my Infuse for 4-5 days and really love the design and all the cool stuff here on xda (as usual). Does Gorilla Glass mean that I don't need a screen protector? I've never been a fan of them. Also, I'm pretty gentle with my phones and would like to keep the stock look with no outer case. What do you guys think, am I flirting with disaster?
EDIT: bought a case-mate pop case in white/gray. Very happy with case and still no screen protector.

The glass is extremely hard. There are videos of people online taking razor blades to it. The plastic on the outside, however, will be more prone to scratches. It's really up to you, but I've had mine for a few weeks, and there are no visible signs of use. I don't baby my phones, but I also am not too tough on them.
There's my 2ยข. I hope it helps.
I like using my phone naked because I haven't found any screen protectors that I really like yet, and I like the device without a case. That being said, I bought the moshi screen protector and casemate pop case, mostly for when I am going to be somewhere or doing something that could put my phone in danger...like when I'm drinking and prone to dropping my phone haha. Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, so it's a good idea to have a screen protector in some situations.
The moshi screen protector is a tad expensive, but I think it's totally worth it for high risk situations. You can take it off and reuse it as many times as you want, and it's really easy to do so. That allows me to put it on quick when I need it, and take it off when I know it's safe. I don't like using it day to day because I love the screen on this phone, and the matte finish on the moshi makes it a bit pixilated. However, it's a life saver in many situations, and I can stand it being on there for the peace of mind while I'm doing something that requires it.
And it's always a good idea to have a case on hand just for rugged situations, and I find the pop to be very nice. It provides a ton of protection in not so huge of a package. While it's not as rugged as an otterbox or ballistic case, my phone has taken quite a few spills from 4+ feet off the ground in my case, and it still fits in my pockets just fine. Another good case that I would recommend is the body glove mirage case. It's a rubbery tpu case that is very pocketable and also provides a lot of protection. All of the accessories I've mentioned can be found at At&t stores, but you can find them cheaper elsewhere, as they mark them up a bit.
Hope I helped!

I'll take a look at those cases, thanks! I don't do anything that drops my phone from 4+ feet off the ground, I'd have a freaking heart attack!
What are you doing with your phone up that high?
my plastic is all in perfect shape, but my screen has a couple of scratches on it
i try to keep it nice, but it's not easy with this big of a screen..
I didn't think you could scratch the Gorilla Glass unless under extreme punishment, what did you do to scratch it?

I'm 6'2", 4 feet off the ground is standard usage height for me while I'm standing. Haha. And gorilla glass can be scratched, I have a micro scratch on my screen from throwing my keys in my pocket.

We must have different glass or something for our screens. I took a razorblade to my old nexus one which was sporting gorilla glass, and there was no visible sign that anything had even happened to it. There are also videos of people online going absolutely nuts on their screens with the same results.

just need something harder than gorilla glass to scratch it. a diamond or maybe some other jewels will easily scratch as well as concrete and maybe some hard steels. keys or gold aren't likely to scratch but some key rings are made from a hard spring steel and might scrach. there is also a coating of some type on the glass that may show scratches.
the plastic definately needs protection. it is break resistant but it is way soft and the lame shiny coating can scratch off.
Scratched my screen with something. Always in its own pocket. Get a screen protector.
From XDA App on Infused v2.1.0 OCed to 1.6 GHz
For myself I don't use a screen protector (had the phone since it came out). The Infuse's screen behaves just like my ole iphone4, if not better.
As others have said, the side chrome plastic will scratch easily so a case is warranted.
I actually have never dropped my phone or anything and I have two micro scratches. Samsung is willing to fix it for free the problem is you have to send them the phone and be without one for 7 days.
I work in construction, I use the Ballistics case and a screen protector on the phone, I dropped it from 10ft off a ladder onto concrete, no damage to phone or case. Best money I ever spent
No screen protector or case on my Infuse, and it's been that way since I bought it two months ago. I have one tiny, tiny scratch on the far left side of the front, but it's so far over that it isn't actually on the screen. I have no idea how it got there, I think there must have been a tiny rock or something in my pocket at one point the scratched it. Who knows. My phone has unfortunately been dropped maybe 5 times, and this never caused any damage. I think your phone will be just fine naked.
I decided to get the Case-Mate Pop case. It makes my phone look like a stormtrooper! Still no screen protector tho.

Hi guys im debating weather to put a screen protector on this baby or not, just got her yesterday. Has anyone experienced scratches? Also would someone recommend a good screen protector other than Zagg or invisishield. I'm done with those types. Also I got a casemate today but it kinda sucks, gonna return it tomorrow. Any recommendations on cases? Thanks.
I've heard from a few people on here that they've experienced scratches. I think if you are really careful you can get away with it. Some of the better cases have a lip which will protect it from falling flat on the screen.

Anyone can recommend any good screen protectors at a good price? I don't mind paying extra for good quality. The verizon ones blow. Makes the screen look VERY pixelated. Trying to avoid purchasing a screen protecter like that.

Yes you should make a search through the forum next time but since this thread is already up..
I highly recommend a ZAGG Invisible Shield screen protector. It costs a little more but its absolutely worth it. They have a model for each specific phone so the protector molds around the camera and corners perfectly. It comes with a whole method of putting it on so its smooth when you finish. Plus if you register the screen protector on their website you can pretty much get a replacement for free if anything happens to the protector which isn't likely but still (too scratched to see the screen or something), plus if that happens it peels right off so you can put another one on and the screen is good as new. But its pretty epically scratch resistant, you can check out vids on youtube or their website. I can't stand when my screens get scratched, so I've been using it for years, very happy customer. They sell them at best buy.
Thanks for heads up guys. Much appreciated

The Charge has Gorilla Glass and is very hard to scratch. Most of us recommend keeping it bare as a screen protector, no matter the quality, detracts from the picture quality slightly.

These. They have great reviews. I am very happy with mine. Doing it's job well since July 2011. And it comes in a pack of 3 in case you mess up. And it comes with installation instructions. And, for giving them a good review, they offered to send me a pack of screen protectors free. So I got a pack of iPhone covers for my parents. Great company, great product
BTW if you mess up, soaking it in rubbing alcohol works great for removing dust and then you just try again and squeegee with a credit card.

It does have gorilla glass. When the phone originally came out it was on corninggorillaglass.com under products with gorilla glass. Now since it is old news it is off the site, but seeing as every major samsung phone is there like the GS, GSII, note, tab, and wp phones, I am sure the charge has it.

Without screen protector, you droid Charge will get scratch. Already happened to my daughter's phone.
I have never managed to scratch a smartphone screen, Gorilla Glass or not, and I've had smartphones since the original iPhone. I hate screen protectors of all forms. I hate the way the look and the way they feel, so I've never used one for more than a few days. I don't think I'm particularly "gentle" on a phone...the only thing special I do is keep it in a pocket by itself. I've seen other people's phone of various builds covered in scratches, and I still don't understand how they get so scratched up.

Doesn't matter what type of glass it has, it can get scratched. And not having a screen protector doesn't mean it will get scratched either. The Charge does have Gorilla Glass, but I wouldn't go around testing it out to see how tough it is. Odds are there are minimum hardness specs that it needs to pass, so some pieces of glass are harder than others.
I had mine in my pocket with keys for a year, no scratches. the plastic is scratched to heck, but the glass remains unscathed.
the charge has gorilla glass making it very scratch/crack resistant. i havent had a screen protector the whole time ive had it, which is about 10 months and it still looks brand new. and trust me, ive dropped it my fair share of times, infact i just dropped it earlier today. had it in my sweater pocket while i was riding my bike and it just flat out fell screen first onto the concrete. not even 1 little scratch.
just dont bother with a screen protector, it looks so much better without one.
but if you really are hell bent on getting a screen protector i can recommend Zagg, i had the enV Touch before this phone for 2 years with a Zagg invishield on the whole time. it kinda got that "rainbow" effect from the grease/sweat on your hands but it was very durable and scratch resistant with a nice fit. overall a perfect screen protector for my needs.
So everyone brag about how tough the screen on the charge, how would you explain to me there are 3 scratches on my daughter phone, which forced me to buy a screen protector???? you all claimed it "UN SCRATCHABLE".
I think you're the only person who's used the word unscratchable, but I did imply that you have to be careless to scratch a glass smartphone screen. Keeping my phone in a pocket by itself, and no other protections, has protected my screens without a screen protector since the original iPhone in 2007. Yes, there are situations where a screen protector would make sense, but in those situations, I'd probably rather use a case/holster that completely covered the screen.

Protected or naked?

Do you have your blaze covered with screen protectors and a case or you like and feel safe enough to use it naked?
Just curious need some opinions I feel like removing my screen protector.

Normally I buy a screen protector and case before even receiving a phone, but in this case I purchased the phone before there were many accessories available for it. After having it for nearly 3 months without a screen protector or case, it has not accumulated any scratches on the screen and only has one tiny scratch near the top of the chrome bezel.
I have yet to find a case I like, one that doesn't have a cutout for the MicroSD card slot.
These are the droids you're looking for:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621222
I've always wanted to say that.
I would use a screen protector, but I really suck at the installations... so whatever. My phone still hasn't any scratches. As for the case... I just LOVE the feel and grip of the Blazes' own back cover. Can't get enough of it.
I've had several devices that feature Gorilla Glass, just like the Blaze. When I water damaged my Droid 1, I purposely took a pocketknife, keys, etc. to the screen to see if i could scratch it, with essentially no results (very very light scratching with ridiculous amount of pressure). The stuff is EXTREMELY scratch resistant. The only times I've heard of appreciable scratching on a GG screen is if you get sand rubbing against it (say you were careless when you took it to the beach), which is extremely hard. You should be just fine protector-less.
I bought a D3O screen protector for it along with a nice screen protector. It wasn't cheap, but it was well worth he investment.
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda app-developers app
Blaze does not use Gorilla Glass, although it uses something just as strong.
I would highly recommend a screen protector. It can crack and scratch. Trust Me.
I made sure to purchase an InvisibleShield prior to ordering the phone and then apply it immediately out of the box before initial startup. Whether or not that's necessary I can't say (I can really only imagine it being 'necessary' to customers that admit to being accident-prone), but the added assurance doesn't hurt.
I did the same. I took it off though and the naked feeling with only a case is much worth an accidental scratch or two, which I still have none

I've tried a few different things since I got this phone a couple months ago. I've had a screen protector on it since day one. I don't remember the brand, it was one of those "cut to size"ones. Apparently I had bought it from the T-Mobile store several years ago with my blackberry curve.
I'm currently using the Prozkin case which was discussed and reviewed in the accessories section. Solid case that adds minimum bulk.

I don't have a screen protector or case on it. I have dropped it several times and it has a few little scratches on the bezel. Normally I have my phones protected to the max, this one not so much..I kinda miss my Vibrant

*ATT S4 demo unit, bunch of micro scratches

I went an ATT store to get a new SIM card and I had a look at the white s4 they had on display. The unit was next to bright light source and it was super sunny outside. I reflected light into screen and there were quite a few micro scratches on the screen. Wiped it several times and the scratches didnt move or fade the slightest bit. Not surprised. So the same story goes for Gorilla Glass 3, the glass is strong, the oleophobic coating will micro scratch. You see a scratch test videos on youtube for every new phone release showing how it doesnt get scratched....dont believe the hype.....that coating can get scratched. Get a screen protector if you are OCD about the screen. Sorry for the PSA....but I know a "oh no, my month old S4 is scratched" will come soon.
Oh i know this would happen lol. I'm ordering a screen protector this weekend. If its glass, it will scratch, there is no way around it.

I go through this cycle when I first get a device where I buy screen protectors and cases like a madman (eventually settling on one case and removing the SP), but I refuse to dump cash into screen protectors again. I won't put those garbage plastic protectors ones on my phone; they degrade the quality and experience severely. Plus, what if I have a warranty issue and have a glass protector installed. There goes $50 ($35 + replacement of $15) and that is assuming I don't mess up the install.
I'm attempting to go easy on this one, folks.

Micro scratches come even if you go easy. I had a GS2 that got scratched on day 2 from the studs on the sides of my jeans pocket! My BB playbook.....yup im a one of those suckers.....got scratched from a wipe with a microfiber cloth ( probably had sand on it). I like to just be able to wipe my phone on my shirt without caring whats on it and put throw it in my pocket. Im willing to sacrifice some screen smoothness/more glare for that. Ive always had good results with Spigen ultra crystal protectors and ghost armor. Very little image degradation.

I was in Best Buy today looking for a case and noticed the micro scratches on another S4 so I bought a screen protector. I almost bought the S View case but wasn't impressed with the amount of protection. I also thought they would have made the cover magnetic so that it wouldn't just blow open on the way to the ground. Ended up buying a bulkier case than I like. Last year I dropped my GS3 on the second day I owned it and chunked the corner of phone. I find that with new phones you tend to drop more because you are always holding it versus it being in your pocket after you are bored/used to it.
I'm pretty bad about noticing any type of scratch on my screen. I have insurance on my phone, with a case and screen protector (Zagg HD) at all times.
People abuse demo units like crazy. I witnessed a guy purposefully scratching at the screen with his keys when no employees were looking to see if it scratched easily

I'm planning to get this phone but since I am used to a 3.7 inch screen I am wondering how well I would take care of a 5 inch. Ditto what he said. And GS4 has Gorilla Glass 3 (the current best available) so unless you sit on it or keep diamond-studded things in your pocket, i'd say a screen protector is not needed. Sometimes when you buy a protective cover, you'll get a free screen protector (usually nothing special, just a small added protection for your screen) which is more than enough for me, personally. But if you want the best protection... Look for tough cases with front flaps. Or you could just go with the official Galaxy S 4 S-View Flip Cover. It's very good protection unless the device is dropped or you sit on it.

I have an iloome glass screen protector. Once you have a glass protector you won't want a plastic one ever again. Even though these phones have good glass already they can still be scratched and if dropped they can break. Thats why I have something there. The glass protectors will take the impact of a fall so your screen doesnt break. Well wont break as easy..

Gorrila Glass 3 may be scratch resistant and all that, but it just offers peace of mind for me when I put a screen protector on my devices. The only device I don't do that on is my nexus tablet because I realized that since I don't carry it around like my S4, it's less likely to get damaged. I rock a Spigen nano tempered glass screen protector. It's like its not even there but I know my screen is protected.

I agree, glass screen protectors are great. But if you're looking for a plastic screen protector, I use Ghost Armor. I don't know if they sell it in retail stores but I'd be willing to bet they have a kiosk at your local mall.
On a side note.. just because your phone is Gorilla Glass 3 doesn't mean it can't scratch. I'd rather deal with plastic than deal with a scratched screen.
I always use screen protectors and I always carry my phone in my pocket. I have tried all sorts of protectors and you definitely will thank me if you get the Zagg high definition protector. Crystal clear, zero finger drag. Got mine for $30!

I found a scratch on my S4 last night. And yes I'm heart broken Lol. This is my first scratch on any smart phone in 5+ years. I paid full price for my S4 so you know I'm super careful. My keys are clipped on my hip to my belt loop. So I never have ANYTHING in my pockets. And wallet in butt pocket. I have NO clue how I got this scratch I have an otter box commuter, and some flip cases.
In other words, even if its a cheap screen protector you might want to get one.

The glass screen protectors are really great in my opinion.

You got me worried about mine. I'll definitely have to check out what Spigen's been up to with its tempered glass.:fingers-crossed:
