[Q] OK with no screen protector or case? - Samsung Infuse 4G

I've had my Infuse for 4-5 days and really love the design and all the cool stuff here on xda (as usual). Does Gorilla Glass mean that I don't need a screen protector? I've never been a fan of them. Also, I'm pretty gentle with my phones and would like to keep the stock look with no outer case. What do you guys think, am I flirting with disaster?
EDIT: bought a case-mate pop case in white/gray. Very happy with case and still no screen protector.

The glass is extremely hard. There are videos of people online taking razor blades to it. The plastic on the outside, however, will be more prone to scratches. It's really up to you, but I've had mine for a few weeks, and there are no visible signs of use. I don't baby my phones, but I also am not too tough on them.
There's my 2¢. I hope it helps.

I like using my phone naked because I haven't found any screen protectors that I really like yet, and I like the device without a case. That being said, I bought the moshi screen protector and casemate pop case, mostly for when I am going to be somewhere or doing something that could put my phone in danger...like when I'm drinking and prone to dropping my phone haha. Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, so it's a good idea to have a screen protector in some situations.
The moshi screen protector is a tad expensive, but I think it's totally worth it for high risk situations. You can take it off and reuse it as many times as you want, and it's really easy to do so. That allows me to put it on quick when I need it, and take it off when I know it's safe. I don't like using it day to day because I love the screen on this phone, and the matte finish on the moshi makes it a bit pixilated. However, it's a life saver in many situations, and I can stand it being on there for the peace of mind while I'm doing something that requires it.
And it's always a good idea to have a case on hand just for rugged situations, and I find the pop to be very nice. It provides a ton of protection in not so huge of a package. While it's not as rugged as an otterbox or ballistic case, my phone has taken quite a few spills from 4+ feet off the ground in my case, and it still fits in my pockets just fine. Another good case that I would recommend is the body glove mirage case. It's a rubbery tpu case that is very pocketable and also provides a lot of protection. All of the accessories I've mentioned can be found at At&t stores, but you can find them cheaper elsewhere, as they mark them up a bit.
Hope I helped!

I'll take a look at those cases, thanks! I don't do anything that drops my phone from 4+ feet off the ground, I'd have a freaking heart attack!
What are you doing with your phone up that high?

my plastic is all in perfect shape, but my screen has a couple of scratches on it
i try to keep it nice, but it's not easy with this big of a screen..

I didn't think you could scratch the Gorilla Glass unless under extreme punishment, what did you do to scratch it?

I'm 6'2", 4 feet off the ground is standard usage height for me while I'm standing. Haha. And gorilla glass can be scratched, I have a micro scratch on my screen from throwing my keys in my pocket.

We must have different glass or something for our screens. I took a razorblade to my old nexus one which was sporting gorilla glass, and there was no visible sign that anything had even happened to it. There are also videos of people online going absolutely nuts on their screens with the same results.

just need something harder than gorilla glass to scratch it. a diamond or maybe some other jewels will easily scratch as well as concrete and maybe some hard steels. keys or gold aren't likely to scratch but some key rings are made from a hard spring steel and might scrach. there is also a coating of some type on the glass that may show scratches.
the plastic definately needs protection. it is break resistant but it is way soft and the lame shiny coating can scratch off.

Scratched my screen with something. Always in its own pocket. Get a screen protector.
From XDA App on Infused v2.1.0 OCed to 1.6 GHz

For myself I don't use a screen protector (had the phone since it came out). The Infuse's screen behaves just like my ole iphone4, if not better.
As others have said, the side chrome plastic will scratch easily so a case is warranted.

I actually have never dropped my phone or anything and I have two micro scratches. Samsung is willing to fix it for free the problem is you have to send them the phone and be without one for 7 days.

I work in construction, I use the Ballistics case and a screen protector on the phone, I dropped it from 10ft off a ladder onto concrete, no damage to phone or case. Best money I ever spent

No screen protector or case on my Infuse, and it's been that way since I bought it two months ago. I have one tiny, tiny scratch on the far left side of the front, but it's so far over that it isn't actually on the screen. I have no idea how it got there, I think there must have been a tiny rock or something in my pocket at one point the scratched it. Who knows. My phone has unfortunately been dropped maybe 5 times, and this never caused any damage. I think your phone will be just fine naked.

I decided to get the Case-Mate Pop case. It makes my phone look like a stormtrooper! Still no screen protector tho.

Hi guys im debating weather to put a screen protector on this baby or not, just got her yesterday. Has anyone experienced scratches? Also would someone recommend a good screen protector other than Zagg or invisishield. I'm done with those types. Also I got a casemate today but it kinda sucks, gonna return it tomorrow. Any recommendations on cases? Thanks.

I've heard from a few people on here that they've experienced scratches. I think if you are really careful you can get away with it. Some of the better cases have a lip which will protect it from falling flat on the screen.

Scratches on screen.

Anybody have any methods for taking care of scratches on the tb screen? I know somebody the other day that the tb uses a type of gorilla glass.. I was just wondering if there was a way to polish it out or anything along those lines, I really hate to use the screen protectors.

I haven't seen anything yet that will reliably "fill the gap" that results from scratches. If indeed the glass is Gorilla Glass, it certainly seems to be scratch prone. There is a nice, long thread here titled something like "I tried to scratch my TB with keys". Perhaps you may find something useful in there (though I think half the posts were flames, lol)
This is the first touch screen phone ever that you will probably do need a screen protector for. Problem is I hate screen protectors and somehow this "gorilla glass" seems more like plastic to me. Especially after using some heavy cut diamond glaze compound made by meguiars my huge scratch in the screen in ggone. Makes me think its some kind of polycarbinate and not what everyone thinks its is. I finished up with a standard car wax and haven't gotten a scratch sense. This may sound stupid but I was despereate and trying everything and that's what worked.
My scratch was long and noticible but not that deep so don't expect miracles.

This screen sucks, if it is gorilla glass it has something applied to the top of it because it scratches so easily. My DINC and Fascinate has much more durable screens. Between the screen and the kickstand flaking, this phone is lacking in durability.
I use a screen protector and while the screen protector has scratches all over it, the edges (The screen that the protector doesn't cover) have absolutely nothing on them. You can see scratches going from the protector and then should continue on to the screen but they just don't. At least for me, this screen is pretty solid.
Also, I use my kickstand everyday for videos, youtube, etc. and have no flaking what so ever. I have owned the phone since the day of launch and it still looks like new.

I had the flaking issue on the kickstand too.. I just scraped all the coating off with the round part of a paper clip. Now it's not a problem anymore and I think it looks better this way. Also the Google logo does not come off with the coating it's etched into the metal. So simple solution to this problem...
What's up with this flaking nonsense? My kickstand looks fine :|
It is poly-silica combo it will scratch. If you don't like screen protectors then I guess your gonna have scratches. Keep in mind if you never turn it on it will never break.

Use the Ultra Crystal here http://www.sgpstore.com/cell-phone/...-screen-protector-steinheil-ultra-series.html and you'll never know it's on unless you look too closely.
Never used a screen protector with my Dinc and never had a scratch. Used the Steinheil for years with my BlackBerrys. After reading about the issues folks were having with their Tbolt screens scratching, I put this protector on a month or so ago, and don't even notice it. I don't use a case.
I never use a case because I always holster my TB. But after wiping my phone off nightly I do see scratches. I'm upset with this. Thanks for link for ultra crystal
how deep are the scrathes? i baby my phones, like BABY since i have OCD, so i have yet to get my first scratch.
+1 on the polycarb suspicion. My screen picked up a scratch somehwere, even though I baby it. I attempted to polish it out with a fine cut polish. While it did lighten, I can see very subtle evidence of my polishing. There appears to be a difference in the texture of the glass where I polished, almost as if I removed a coating.
I have since installed SGP Ultra Crystal which I really like. Never needed protector with my BB Storm..two years of heavy torture and not a single minute scratch. Go figure. I also have the kickstand flaking. I've really treated this TBolt like a piece of delicate china and its falling apart lol.
My screen and kickstand both look like **** now. I went from launch of D1 until TB launch with my D1 in the SAME POCKETS at the SAME JOB, and it had no scratches... The only blemish on it was the Gold paint on the Camera button came off...
Gorilla glass... PFFT... more like Gorilla ass!!!!
Awesome, thanks for the endorsement!

Screen protector needed?

I'm so fed up with these things. I know for a fact that I can't install them on my own, so I have Verizon AND BestBuy give it a go, and they still always leave dirt under it.
So I wanna know if there's ANY chance of the Gorilla Glass getting scratches. I mean even a LITTLE scratch, because I'm crazy about that stuff. Is it possible for sand or dirt or something to scratch the screen?
Please voice your opinions ASAP. I wanna throw this thing back in BestBuy's face.

I feel your pain, I thought the girl at Best Buy did a nice job installing the Zagg until I got home and noticed a speck of dust smack dab in the middle of the screen.
I should bring it back and have another one put on, but just haven't yet.

If I decide to keep a protector on, I'm just gonna leave it how it is. I go back to BesBuy every day because they don't know how to do it, and it's getting played out.
You guys gotta start by washing your hands. Then clean the screen with a lint free cloth. Then take your time and check the screen over and over for specks. With the zagg you have to wet your fingers thoroughly take battery out before doing anything and replace back cover. Spray both sides of the screen protector and start at the top and lay it down. Peel it up until it's right. Re wet if needed! It's sloppy at first. Squeegee away from openings until the big bubbles are gone. Little ones will remain until the next day. Once dry. It's amazing and worth it. Soak up the remainder water with a cloth and leave it off with no battery for a few hours or so. Hope this helps guys. I literally just did this last night. Zagg replaces them too for life. You pay shipping. Worth it imo.

This is my 2nd Gorilla Glass phone, had the Fascinate before. NOTHING scratches these phones. I mean if you have a pocket full of wood screws and rocks then maybe you'll get a couple scratches but these phones are meant to not need the plastic piece of crap protectors. They even look ugly too. The only thing I ever got to scratch the glass was a box cutter.... yeah...
You don't need it.

Same here. Second phone with gorilla glass. I'm sure you could scratch it if you really tried but I have never had a problem.
I have had several phones and all of them with out any screen protectors and haven't had any issues. Keys normally end up in the same pocket as my phone. Gorilla Glass is great stuff.
I think the main reason for using the screen protector is more for anti-glare or to repel finger prints etc.

I went to my mall because Ghost Armor had a kiosk near the verizon store in there. paid the $50 total for the full body skin and install and I tell you, it is worth the money to have it put on professionally, well closest to professional hahaha. PLUS, now I have lifetime replacement so long as I go there and the damaged skin is on it just pay them the $15 install fee for full body or $10 for front screen only and you are set!
the screen does NOT feel like there is a skin on it. smooth and clear
I had a Sprint Evo before with Gorrila glass and I scratched it. I had my ear buds in my pocket with it and the jack made a 1 inch scratch near the center. From then on I always use a screen protector.

I've used my fascinate naked for a while, always careful with it and put it in my pocket facing my leg. Then one day a .2mm scratch came out of nowhere, probably from a spec of sand in my pocket. Sure, it will handle most of everyday materials, but if you're OCD about having a perfect screen, and a little scratch happens, will always be in the back of your mind. Better safe then sorry. Nothing is really un-scratchable unless it's diamond or crystal sapphire. Only materials with hardness greater than or equal to can scratch other materials. Here's a hardness scale just for fun!
Talc
Gypsum (fingernail at 2.5)
Calcite (copper - old penny at 3.5)
Fluorite
Apatite (window glass or typical knife blade at under 5.5)
Orthoclase (good steel file at over 6.5)
Quartz
Topaz
Corundum (sapphire, ruby)
Diamond
I buy protectors in packs of 5 becasue I never get it the first time. I've used skins from best skins ever on my BBs but they would always end up peeling. I have a friend that installs clearbras on cars and have gotten material from him but even with being super anal on the install it will end up peeling. I would love to have a nice skin and drop the cases but I haven't found a good one yet. The Storm2 I had before had a skin from best skins ever and took a few knocks without issue so I'm not worried about the charge.

have you tried the wrapsol covering..I saw it at my local Walmart of all places
I hate the way screen protectors feel and look on a phone. I always feel like I'm losing screen clarity so I keep my Charge without a screen protector. I make sure to never put it in the same pocket as my keys however. While my Charge has zero scratches so far, my fascinate got one scratch when I had it in the pocket with my keys.
Basically if you go without a screen protector you have to be able to accept the fact that you probably WILL get a tiny scratch on it. It is difficult to do but possible. But would you rather deal with screen protectors all the time or deal with a tiny scratch? It all depends on what is worse to you.
I would rather not use one but I'm one of those guys that would go crazy if that big, beautiful screen was scratched.
I used the "Realook" screen protectors on my fassy and will probably use them on my charge after I receive it Monday. They cover the entire screen and don't affect picture quality at all. There is hardly any difference in feel and they hold up very well over time.

*ATT S4 demo unit, bunch of micro scratches

I went an ATT store to get a new SIM card and I had a look at the white s4 they had on display. The unit was next to bright light source and it was super sunny outside. I reflected light into screen and there were quite a few micro scratches on the screen. Wiped it several times and the scratches didnt move or fade the slightest bit. Not surprised. So the same story goes for Gorilla Glass 3, the glass is strong, the oleophobic coating will micro scratch. You see a scratch test videos on youtube for every new phone release showing how it doesnt get scratched....dont believe the hype.....that coating can get scratched. Get a screen protector if you are OCD about the screen. Sorry for the PSA....but I know a "oh no, my month old S4 is scratched" will come soon.
Oh i know this would happen lol. I'm ordering a screen protector this weekend. If its glass, it will scratch, there is no way around it.

I go through this cycle when I first get a device where I buy screen protectors and cases like a madman (eventually settling on one case and removing the SP), but I refuse to dump cash into screen protectors again. I won't put those garbage plastic protectors ones on my phone; they degrade the quality and experience severely. Plus, what if I have a warranty issue and have a glass protector installed. There goes $50 ($35 + replacement of $15) and that is assuming I don't mess up the install.
I'm attempting to go easy on this one, folks.

Micro scratches come even if you go easy. I had a GS2 that got scratched on day 2 from the studs on the sides of my jeans pocket! My BB playbook.....yup im a one of those suckers.....got scratched from a wipe with a microfiber cloth ( probably had sand on it). I like to just be able to wipe my phone on my shirt without caring whats on it and put throw it in my pocket. Im willing to sacrifice some screen smoothness/more glare for that. Ive always had good results with Spigen ultra crystal protectors and ghost armor. Very little image degradation.

I was in Best Buy today looking for a case and noticed the micro scratches on another S4 so I bought a screen protector. I almost bought the S View case but wasn't impressed with the amount of protection. I also thought they would have made the cover magnetic so that it wouldn't just blow open on the way to the ground. Ended up buying a bulkier case than I like. Last year I dropped my GS3 on the second day I owned it and chunked the corner of phone. I find that with new phones you tend to drop more because you are always holding it versus it being in your pocket after you are bored/used to it.
I'm pretty bad about noticing any type of scratch on my screen. I have insurance on my phone, with a case and screen protector (Zagg HD) at all times.
People abuse demo units like crazy. I witnessed a guy purposefully scratching at the screen with his keys when no employees were looking to see if it scratched easily

I got the zagg tempered glass protector and it feels pretty solid. IMO the gorilla glass 4 feels a bit better but it's super clear and feels nice.
The S6 is made of Gorilla glass corning 4 so it's pretty tough but it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of protection. I have IQShield screen protectors and it provides full coverage. Check them out on Amazon. Also it's currently on sale.

My screen on my S6 has scratched really really easy, only had a few days and there is a one inch very deep scratch on the screen. in all the years I've had a phone I've never scratched a phone so badly as this. Sorry to hear about the deep scratch. I don't have a screen protector on mine yet, though I just received the BodyGuardz Ultra Tough. I've been careful, but I'm not using a case or screen protector at all currently and have just been putting it in my pocket thus far. I would say scratches were much easier to put on my previous phone, which was the crusty old S3.
OP, I think that the screen can and will scratch somewhat easily. I think that if you don't want to take extra precautions with the phone on a day-to-day basis, I would recommend getting a screen protector and/or a case. These just allow you to be a little more clumsy and not have any repercussions. (or fewer repercussions.)

doesn't scratch easily but my oleophobic coating is already wearing and ive had it since april 10th
i've had the phone since launch and been using it without screen protector and have not notice any scratches at all. Im not careful with my phone too. Put it in my pocket with keys and change regularly and put it screen down, since the camera makes the phone slippery when it's on smooth uneven surfaces. With previous phones, nexus 4 and 5, they would have some micro scratches by now. I dont get this obsession over getting scratches on a screen that are not noticeable when the screen is on. You are only going to have this phone for a year or two so i dont see what the big deal is.
I got a small scratch after using the phone for one day. Probably due to a grain of sand in my pocket or something like that. I'm planning on getting a screen protector not only to prevent further scratching, but also to ensure the current scratch won't be visible to the naked eye. Albeit knowing that there already is a scratch truly grinds my gear.

I sometimes miss my old moto x 2013-- that thing NEVER scratched no matter what. I had that thing naked for a two years and I re-sold it in immaculate condition. I dropped that thing dozens of times, and it was never harmed once. I miss that thing...
I had a fine scratch on mine after a couple days of use. Luckily Rogers let me exchange mine anyway cause mine had a slightly looser than normal home button.
Quickly put on a tempered glass protector on both the front and back.

I'd recommend the Tempered Glass Screen Protector,Thin, transparent.
Tempered glass protection screen of mobile phone film is currently the most high-end products to strengthen the protection of the.
The protective layer thickness of only 0.1 mm, can completely cover the original screen surface, prevent external damage, scratches, more shock absorbent, 5 times higher than the standard PET film. The video has no effect on the screen.

Thank you for your opinion-- do you have a brand that you recommend? I think we all know that glass screen protectors are the way to go, but it's a matter of which company you buy from that determines the success or failure of the screen protector.
i scratched the flash/heart rate monitor sensor glass, luckily everything still works and i'm thankful it wasn't my camera lens
I have the S6 for one week nude and no scratches, though I am very careful.
I am just a little annoyed by the reflection rainbow effect the screen does under sunlight, will a tempered glass take it away?

Plastic Screen Protector that actually seals around the edges.

So after several failures with glass protectors and halo effects with all of them, I decided to try a PET version-- just to get some protection on the glass, thinking that I would just have to deal with the feel of it.
I tried amFilm (have used their stuff before, and it was pretty good).
Well, now a few days later, the screen does not have any halo effect. It sticks to the sides very well, and doesn't seem to be up-lifting at all. The feel is still plasticy, but that's about expected. It certainly doesn't feel as smooth as glass, but I'll take it. The glass ones were pealing off, haloing, etc etc, and this is a perfect solution. I'm sure that in time, I will come to grow used to the feel, and it won't even be a hindrance at all.
I am using the same one, someone mentioned this one on the glass SP thread so I gave it a try.
Been using it for a week now, and it's already showing some signs of use, a few scratches, pretty sure it's gonna be all over in a couple of months. I also have misty fingers, so gliding over the screen is painful in times.
One thing I don't like about it is the cutout for the front camera, they could've easily just made a hole instead of how it cuts off on the top. Also, it does lift a little bit when I press the volume or power buttons, I think I have aligned it pretty OK too, but nothing is perfect I guess.

I'll have to watch out for that as I go along. At least there's a lifetime warranty- so when it does wear out, you can get another one for free!
I've been hearing some good things about this products. Thanks, I think that I'll try it out.
Using the same thing, been 2 weeks and it does get scratched easily but good enough for now. Been using amFilm for awhile too. They already made tempered glass for 6s, wish they would make one for our phones.

Thanks, I'll have to check this one out.
The TPU screen protectors seem to work. I have one on mine and its holding on really well. They are much like the TPU cases, a soft feeling gel like film. They are completely floppy, so dont try to pull up like the harder plastic films, they are also virtually invisible.
There are downsides, they are very floppy and stretchy, so can be tricky to fit. Im also not too sure how durable they will be. They recover from some marks quite easily, but they can snag. This is the one I have on mine..

I use the Spigen with front and rear protection. Very good quality as usual with Spigen.

Curious to know what's the point of a screen protector these days with the glass being so scratch resistant.
I.e on my iphone 5, i had it for 2 years no protector. only scratches are ones not visible. Unless you throw your phone around like a toy, put it in a pocket full of sand ect, You really wont scratch it.

For me it's "just in case" protection. I'm very careful with my toys, and even more so with this expensive phone. There are times when things happen and by me just being me and it falling off my lap, all it takes is that one unlucky fall when it hits the corner of the chair leg. I've never broken a phone screen, yet...

Gorilla Glass is about as scratch resistant as cheese. Its actually worse than normal glass. Gorilla Glass is somewhat shock resistant and highly flexible, but not scratch resistant.

I'm calling you on this one, I work with glass every day, and i'm around an engineering shop daily, so there's plenty of potential for my glass to scratch. It's held up fine for 2 years no protector.
Glass on the Mohs scale is 5.5
Gorilla glass is 6.8
Diamond is 10.

'Glass' as in soda glass maybe, but plenty of other types are better. 6.8 isnt that great. It certainly doesn't explain why my last phone got a scratch after falling face first on a brand new clean carpet!
Scratching isnt all about hardness anyway, its only part of the story and is sold to us in marketing BS. A softer object can scratch a harder one, all that happens is that the softer one is damaged more. This notion that hardness alone is all there is to scratching or breaking is completely wrong and needs to stop.
A rough piece of metal, almost any metal, will tear up the surface of GG very easily indeed.
I bought a skinomi film that wraps around both edges...there self healing too
Anyone tried Pleson?
