It is especially interesting to hear opinions of people that have used many sorts of home buttons.
For long time I thought that I would prefer capacitive home button over physical but I see a few advantages with physical:
- it is a safe spot to rest your thumb without accidentally pressing a capacitive button
- it is a faster way to switch power on from a sleeping phone than trying to find a power button from the side of the phone.
About virtual home key I really don't have experience, but as a prejudicious tought I dislike the fact that it eats pixels from the screen. I really don't see any other good reason for virtual keys than saving costs of capacitive keys. If there is such reasons, please share.
I've used them all. I hate physical buttons, so I use GMD gesture control on my s3.

I can see GMD being better on a tablets.
But for the common 4-5" smartphone screen users most if not all functions are usually performed single handedly via the thumb, so something PIE CONTROLS would be a much easier method to execute commands requiring less than an inch of on screen GESTURES.
And since it also displays the time/date and battery life you also don't need to have a status bar take up the precious screen space.

I really like the capacitive home button on the HTC One X, but could also get accustomed to a virtual solution since it's way more flexible.
Especially using pie it seems to be a lot more space saving.
Capacitive, but I can use virtual also if the screen type != Amoled which thankfully is the case with Nexus 4/5. Wouldn't want a burn-in like the gnex.

Thanks for the tip. I tried pie controls and it's pretty good, but I think I still prefer GMD. It has more options like turning off the screen or switching between apps. I usually use two hands on the phone anyways, though I could see it being useful if you had to use one hand.

You can also use PGM2 AKA touch control app to turn screen off by swiping the very bottom of the screen from Left to right or viscera and turning screen on by swiping up from bottom of screen gesture like on BB10 devices or double tapping the screen like on the LG G2.
Pie controls also has recent apps button for switching between open apps.
Only time I use more than 1 finger is for certain games in landscape mode.
Even zooming in/out can be done using an app like:

anyone know of an app like the iphone's activator app (from cydia)
for those that don't know, it allows you to set to open different app/functions with different combinations of button presses, e.g a double press of the home button in the lock screen might turn the light on, a long press of the home button at the lock screen might open the camera.. It's fully customizable.
The basic function I after is to quickly get up the camera app with out having to unlock the phone (I use the pattern lock)
has anyone used activator for iphone?? what do people think of its capabilities?

Thanks, it seems like it can do a lot of things.. I'll have to work out how it works now
no luck
I have been trying to recreate Activator's functionality with Tasker since I switched to Android (2 years ago). I think Android just doesn't function similarly enough to get the same functionality. Activator & Glovepod (no touch music control) are the only things I miss about iOS. Tasker has so many awesome features though that I would never consider switching back.
GMD Gesture Control + Tasker replicates and even improves upon Activator. Bad part? They have a total cost of $11, but there are free trials for both.
Gesture Control works best on tablets though..

I am interested in it. I'm trying out the free version (before I buy) but I notice somethings. Maybe its just me but when I watch a movie on the default player on my Evo4G, after tapping on the screen a few times, the lock disables. I can skip through the entire movie and even get out. I'm going to try it with a different player later today.
A few suggestions,
1) It would be nice if the toggle button changed (ex. inverted colors) because when I had the movie problem, I couldn't tell if it was locked or unlocked.
2) Is it possible we can change the location of the toggle button, at least like different corners because it's too close to the home button when in landscape.
One final note, when its locked, you can still drag down the notification bar. So far its looking pretty good. Let me know if I'm doing something wrong since I've only been playing with it for about 30 minutes. Thanks.
Man, this is just what I was looking for ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431037 ). Super!
I want it for e-reading in kindle or aldiko. Tested so far briefly on Galaxy Tab 8.9 (android 3.2) and an HTC Desire (2.3.3) ... Just fine so far.
I first tried Screen Tools 2, but that one messed up the use of volume buttons for page flipping in both kindle and aldiko.
it took me a while to understand some of the options, like the meaning of "auto on toggle". Also, the toggle app shortcut only works as "on switch" for me... With touch screen disabled, the toggle can't be used to deactivate.
It also took me a while to figure out how to unlock (the use of the tiny toggle button is not documented in the settings or anywhere)
EDIT: I realize now this is what's meant by onscreen button in the settings
The option to leave the edge active is also great, although I will probably opt to switch pages with volume buttons.
EDIT: swiping pages this way works well on the tablet, but is hit and miss on the phone. The edge size may need to be user selectable?
I second the idea to color code the tiny toggle.
Great work.
EDIT: I was searching (Google) for a long time using keywords like "disable touch screen" (all about turning screen off) and "disable touch sensitivity" with no results... Until I found screen tools 2, and then very accidentally this one.
---------- Post added at 01:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:25 AM ----------
Extra feature idea....
disable touch sensitivity along the edge only, keeping sensitivity on the center
Use case: I need something that allows me to hold the tablet a bit more firmly, in one hand, which means putting my thumb in the screen just a bit.

How can I make this work on Galaxy S2? Original 2.3.4 Rom
I have no camera and search button. Where are the settings?
I have installed it, but when I press on it, nothing!
Please help! I need this application!
After buying hardware key support, on my Galaxy S2 the home (and power) bottons still work... even with No Touch active, ofc. Otherwise no problems on my device, also on 2.3.4 ^^.
Also, I absolutly need a popup window on trying to unblock, for inputing a code to unlock, optionaly and maybe only on the payed for version . It is way too easy for my 2 and 4 year olds to unlock otherwise.
Also, I agree, change the color on button when unlocking/locking No Touch.
I would like to be able to choose which tiles on the homescreen to lock. That would be just perfect.
Just tried it and it works nice. I just have one question before I upgrade. If I block the hardware buttons will I skill be able to unlock using a long press of the search key?
is there any chance to make this app lock the screen with long press home button? that would be universal for all android phones. no camera button in my s2. and also so the phone will not respond to any other buttons (ie power button)

I love the fact that samsung continues to use hardware home button but dont like that they still use inflexible capacitive buttons. So whats the solution?
Well my solution is slightly pricier but I doubt it would raise costs too much. Instead of having capacitive buttons at each side of the home button, how about we have 2 tiny OLED screens? This way you could change the position of the buttons from left to right, you will be able to have a dynamic menu key so no need to have it all the time. You could have a dedicated search button if you want or a dedicated task switcher or nothing at all. We know an OLED screen consumes very insignificant power when displaying all black. Basically you will have a hardware home button AND the flexibility of on-screen buttons in one phone.
I would go with a back key on the left and would leave the right screen to dynamically display the menu button whenever needed. Basically everyone could have their own configuration how they see fit. Sounds like a great idea to me seriously but lets see others opinion.
PS: I posted the same topic in the nexus 4 forum but seems like not many people were interested in the discussion.

The power button of a phone with no home button is also likely to crash earlier than for a phone with a home button.
I think 2 years is not a bad period to be honest...iPhone home button has a similar life so it just seems a technical limitation right now.

It's a neat idea, but I don't think there are enough people who feel the need to customize the buttons for Samsung to bother.
Pretty useless to customize the buttons in my opinion.
I feel that once you get used to the configuration, it is one of the best combinations in phones.

I think we can all agree that there should be a dynamic menu button instead of a fixed one cant we? It still happens to me that an app has actions with the menu button and I never knew before because I never pressed the menu button. With a dynamic menu button that problem is gone.
I completely understand why samsung wont give a dedicated task switcher as accidentally pressing it can be quite annoying but really the fixed menu key needs to go.
What about the back button? If its displayed on-screen then it is capable of changing shape to tell you that your next press will exit the app. This is so helpful and only possible on-screen.
And secondly having a flexible button system can be really useful with an evolving OS like android. Who knows google might introduce another navigation button in the mix as all their phones use on-screen configurations.
I think it is a crime to put a hard home button on a top phone made in 2013. It's not 1995 anymore. Samsung insists on hard buttons just to make it easier for people coming from iPhone, which is an emberassment for the Android community.

My biggest issue with having just a single screen is that there is just no gap between the actual screen and navigation buttons. If you increase the gap then ofcourse it becomes a massive waste of screen. I believe google should switch to using a separate screen in the next nexus for navigation allowing for a bit of gap between the actual screen and buttons. Efficient use of space be damned there is a balance you gotta keep between that and practical usage.
I love the hard button. When I had the Moto Defy, sometimes my finger would slip and touch the home button (I have big hands). It angered the heck out of me.
Samsung reportedly losing physical home button i think it should stay as its nice to have physical button what do you people think please vote it will be interesting what you guys and girls think
i would give up the menu button or any other physical button for onscreen buttons only if the bottom bezel is extremely thin, just like the side bezels. Unless otherwise its of no use. having a thick bezel at the bottom and onscreen menu on top of it is lame and a waste of screen space
Psychical buttons are one of the reasons why i bought Samsung phone. All other phones have onscreen buttons, i cant see them well, i cant feel them under my finger. Sony uses onscreen buttons but on their phones there is so much wasted space, on most phones that i saw it was so i didnt like them. I find great that S4 and S4A have psychical buttons, i really like them.
One of the most used things by me is menu button. I dont have to waste time to search those unituinitive 3 dots im just pressing hardware key. Much more often im using menu than switching between apps. For switching im using great app Swipe Home Button.
from S4 Active Blue Ocean
If they remove the menu button they might as well remove the home and back button at the same time.
I like them but I wouldn't say no to a pair of stereo speakers on either side of the screen.

I am may be the only one bothered by the return/back button. when I start or use the camera, I very often accidentally touch it with my "big" finger while adjusting/moving my hands position and that close the camera application . This a real pain and a design mistake.
The best about the sensorless buttons would be to make them customizable upon customer wishes and needs. That way everybody is happy, Ge and Sammy fans.

[I'm helping to tell developers how they can protect their app from being pirated and how they can protect it, in that way you can consider to not worry about your app being patched. too many developers have a bad protection.]
it seems a lot of people would like to keep menu button i hope it stays as i really like having the menu button its nice to have one physical button
They're removing it because it's a waste of space. The 3-dot overflow menu is always there. Why have a button that duplicates functionality?
As well, the menu button is unintuitive when there isn't actually a menu. The 3-dot overflow menu doesn't have this problem; it just disappears.
Changing it to a Recent App capacitive button adds functionality, since it's much faster than long-pressing, and much more intuitive to find. It also greatly increases how fast you can navigate your device, which is why Google implemented in their navigation bar.
Times are changing, and for the better. Keep up!
I originally had a Sony Xperia S but once they removed physical buttons from new models I went to Samsung.. I don't know what's the point of adding physical buttons to the screen.. You should asked Google that question. They designed Android and not Sony. Samsung is still living in the Gingerbread era, they should move with the times.
Is this thread talking about just the menu button? Or the physical home button? Or all the buttons at the bottom??? What I read is Samsung is replacing the menu button with the recent app button(which I find its way better as it really speeds up multitasking)... Not about removing the physical home button or all the buttons to become on screen buttons.
On a 5'' or bigger phone the menu button makes one hand handling easier!
Plain and simple. I am going to miss it.

I am a heavy multitasker so the answer is easy ... menu button should have disappeared long ago ... and replaced with the recent apps button ... because long pressing the home button isn't very efficient and doesn't feel nice at all ...
As someone who has always used samsung devices it will be strange to not have a menu button
After seeing a lot of comparison videos of the HTC One m8 and the Galaxy S5 I realized one of the big things HTC has is their motion launch gestures. Unfortunately for HTC it is limited to doing just a few things. So since the Galaxy S5 has an OLED screen which is turned "off" when displaying black pixels, I figured I could create something like the motion launch gestures that uses minimal battery.
So I created Knockr an app that allows users with OLED Screen devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Moto X, to quickly enter an app with gestures without having to turn the screen on.
Gestures include:
Double Tap: Double tap the screen to open any app you choose or unlock the screen
Swipe Up, Down, Left, Right: Users can set each Swipe to open a separate app or unlock the screen
Long Press: Long press the screen to open any app you choose or unlock the screen
Volume Up when in Landscape: Pressing the volume up button when the device is in Landscape will automatically open the camera
I am still working on improving some of the things in Knockr, but wanted to post it on here to get some feedback and suggestions to make it better.
Download Here
**EDIT**
The newest update 2.1 now includes Knocks. Knocks is like LG's Knock Code. You can create multiple Knocks to unlock or open apps.

Going to give it a try with my Galaxy S4 Mini, I hope it's not too harsh on the battery. Nevertheless this application seems like a great idea, Thank you.
EDIT: Seems to work very well. Just a few things I noticed.
-The screen can turn on by a single touch to the screen (it will then display lockscreen)
-The backlight keys turn on after the app is activated once the screen is locked (the keys are only on for a few seconds on my phone anyway, no big deal)
-Is it possible to decrease the delay between when the phone is locked and when the Knockr app is loaded/active?

Only one touch and the screen is awake to show the lock pattern on Samsung S4.
What an awesome app! My only recommendation is to take away the one tap to turn on the screen, as the screen can accidentally turn on in your pocket very easily and cause unwanted battery drain.

Thanks for the feedback. It shouldn't use much battery especially if you use the power management since you probably wont have your phone turned off to often outside of your pocket during the day and if you do you can just turn it over and still get the same benefit.
I have already uploaded a new version that has removed the single tap action so there aren't any false touches registered. It also made the screen on an option to choose for any of the gestures. It also fixes a bug that cause Knockr to close when the orientation was changed after being pocketed.
Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to load Knockr any faster since I already have it setup to load as fast as possible. The problem is that I have to use a broadcast receiver to receive the screen off and the broadcast takes a little bit of time to be sent out (I'll keep looking for ways to make it faster though).
Really cool app!
Few recommendations:
1. Any way to show clock and notifications every couple of seconds? (Ex 15s)
2. Way to bypass knockr when power button is pressed.
Thanks!

questions :
can it detect multi finger on screen off? we might get more gesture thts why only.
screen segmentation? means on some part of screen it detects then that gesture recognized.
just some ideas.
Awesome app. Just awesome. I didn't want to install a custom kernel just for this feature and now I don't have to. Working great at the moment. Power button is no use for unlocking but app is working with almost no hitch.
A suggestion for people who use this. Install screen on&off from play store and add that to nova launcher's double tap gesture to lock the screen. Now you can use double tap to both locking and unlocking.
Also, I have to swipe twice to open an app. Can't we do that with one swipe?
Edit: It opens with one swipe but it isn't always working. Needs some work.

It installed on Galaxy Nexus (It is having SUPER AMOLED), when I double tap, screen wakes but shows black screen.
Cool app!
I can see navbar when i turn screen off though. And i can press power button and turn device off...
Im using a n7000 running Slimkat

***FOR OLED SCREENS ONLY***
After seeing a lot of comparison videos of the HTC One m8 and the Galaxy S5 I realized one of the big things HTC has is their motion launch gestures.

Hey! This works very nicely! I'm having no problems so far. However, on my stock 4.4.2 Samsung Note 3 N900W8, I've noticed that if I have Multi Window on (use two apps at the same time), the multi window tab shows on the screen when Knockr becomes active. Specifically, I turn off my screen using the power button, and a second or two later the tab pops up. I don't know if this can be prevented without turning multi window off entirely, but thought I'd bring it up. Great app!
