Google Inc.’s Android software outsold Apple Inc.’s mobile operating system for the first time last quarter among new U.S. smartphone users, according to Nielsen Co.
Android had 27 percent of the U.S. market in the second quarter, compared with 23 percent for the Apple iPhone OS, known as iOS, Nielsen said on its website today. Research In Motion Ltd. clung to its leading position, with 33 percent share.
Manufacturers such as Motorola Inc. and HTC Corp. used Android in a wider range of handsets, giving new smartphone purchasers more options. Still, the iPhone retained a higher share than Android among existing smartphone users, according to Nielsen’s research.
“There’s a massive hunger for smartphones, and the Android universe came out not just with one blockbuster device but with a whole series of blockbuster devices,” Roger Entner, head of telecom research at Nielsen, said in an interview.

Now that Google is buying Motorola anyone think Motorola device will have an edge in terms of compatibility and/or performance? I know I will look harder at the Motorola product next time I get a tablet.
No. Google isn't like Apple... Google isn't a money hungry giant. Proof of this, just ask yourself "How many Google services do I pay for?" Your answer? None.
They aren't bias and one-sided either. Knowing Google, they will just use this to improve Android and their Nexus line, and Motorola's devices as well.
Google already said that this isn't going to effect Android in a bad way, but only make it stronger.
"We recently explained how companies including Microsoft and Apple are banding together in anti-competitive patent attacks on Android. The U.S. Department of Justice had to intervene in the results of one recent patent auction to 'protect competition and innovation in the open source software community' and it is currently looking into the results of the Nortel auction. Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies."
"This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android’s success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences."
Google says this was a way to strengthen Android and their fight to defend it from MS and Apple. If you look at the responses from HTC, Samsung, LG, and Sony Ericson, they also think this was only a move to help Android.

That's because they are ignorant and don't understand why Google did what they did.
actually, google is as money hungry as apple...except google's business model is in ads. the more appliances using google's ads, the more money google makes. this is why it is in google's interest to keep the android platform as lawsuit free as possible. by giving away free operating system that uses googe services, the better it is for google.
thankfully for us consumer, google's business model is actually pro-sumer as well (assuming you don't mind all the information gathering and stuff ). the way google makes money involves free (more like ad-supported), quality software for us.

It's all a guessing game now. Only time will tell. No matter what they say.
Now why would Google buy Motorola Mobility but for just one reason and that is not to put a stom on Motorola's intentions on suing the Android makers.
I beliece that Google's intentions are more than that, Google wanna be tge new Apple.
After a few years of introducing Android and after the platform has grown and become stable enough, Google saw the opporrunity to buy Motorola Mobility so (Google) can fire everybody else that make Android phones and keep the platform fir them selves.
This will start a new Era for Google to make their own hardware and software phones and also put an end to the Fragmentation of the platform.
So there you have it.
Google making Android, Apple making IOS, Nokia and HTC making WP7, RIM with QNX, Samsung developing their own BADA OS and i know that LG is somehow related to MeeGo.
I brlieve rhat this makes the future of the mobile world.
First, this "Motorola intend to sue other Android makers" thing has been so completely blown out of proportion it's insane. It's more a fabrication of the press rather than something real.
Second, the "Google will go the Apple route" thing is ridiculous itself. A big reason Android is kicking iOS's butt is because it's everywhere, as opposed to being limited to one phone only. Not to mention Google stated nothing will change regarding Android's openness.
Third, why aren't you using the existing thread for the Googlorola discussion?
(thread probably locked (because of the third point above) in 3... 2... 1...)
Patents. One of the big reasons.

Dear Google: AT&T Locked Down the Best Android Handset Ever, and It’s Your Fault.
The whole promise of Android was that it was an open ecosystem — a contrast Google loves to draw with Apple’s closed system.
At the Google I/O conference in 2010, Google vice president Vic Gundotra intimated that Apple had become the Big Brother it promised to smash.
“If you believe in openness, if you believe in choice, if you believe in innovation from everyone, then welcome to Android,” Gundotra said. “If Google did not act, we faced a Draconian future where one man, one company, one device, one carrier would be our only choice.”
But carriers, who strangled handset and mobile application innovation for years until Apple wrested control from them, can’t stop themselves from bloating and crippling phones — including the ones Google touts as exemplars of openness.

great story and post. i understand where these companies are coming from in locking down phones like the HOX. But like many others, it drives me insane and really does completely mock the integrity of Android. Glad to have Wired on board, hopefully Google, HTC, ATT at least take note of the consumer's malcontent and realize that the further they pander to the masses, the worse their product becomes. I was a truly a deep fan of the OG and 3G iphones but Apple (with the help of carriers) has gone into a SHARP decline over the years and now is really it's worst enemy. I can't accept that as an option of fate for Android.
From reliable sources, I have found out a reason to be very happy. It was on November 5'th 2007, that Android first unveiled itself.
The Wikipedia Link : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_android#History
It says:
On November 5, 2007, the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of technology companies including Google, device manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung, wireless carriers such as Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile, and chipset makers such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, unveiled itself, with a goal to develop open standards for mobile devices.[9] That day, Android was unveiled as its first product, a mobile device platform built on the Linux kernel version 2.6.[9] The first commercially available phone to run Android was the HTC Dream, released on October 22, 2008.[30]
It has been a long way, and we are still the most popular operating system out there.
One of the websites out there, Pocket-Lint made an announcement...

What is strange though is that Google itself hasn't really celebrated the fact. No fanfare, no new announcements (we were partly expecting Android 5 to be announced - the portents were strong, certainly), and no Google doodle. Doesn't mean we can't toot into a party blower on its behalf, though.
