Google Inc.’s Android software outsold Apple Inc.’s mobile operating system for the first time last quarter among new U.S. smartphone users, according to Nielsen Co.
Android had 27 percent of the U.S. market in the second quarter, compared with 23 percent for the Apple iPhone OS, known as iOS, Nielsen said on its website today. Research In Motion Ltd. clung to its leading position, with 33 percent share.
Manufacturers such as Motorola Inc. and HTC Corp. used Android in a wider range of handsets, giving new smartphone purchasers more options. Still, the iPhone retained a higher share than Android among existing smartphone users, according to Nielsen’s research.
“There’s a massive hunger for smartphones, and the Android universe came out not just with one blockbuster device but with a whole series of blockbuster devices,” Roger Entner, head of telecom research at Nielsen, said in an interview.

I've been planning, and information-designing, for the past year a business venture which I will describe very vaguely at this point as:
A portal site & directory for all touchscreen platforms, devices, apps and carriers, targeted primarily at mainstream consumers ... and secondarily at app developer individuals and companies seeking clients for custom development. This directory cuts across the Apple iPhone platform, Android OS, WindowsMobile, Blackberry, Palm OS, (and whatever Nokia ends up with). And manufacturers including HTC, Motorola, SonyEricsson, Nokia, Samsung.
I'm a UX/ Usability Designer who's participated here for 4 years, first as a clueless new consumer with a T-Mobile MDA, to solid participant, with both broad and deep underdstandings of the touchscreen marketplace. My HTC Hero arrives tomorrow and I embark on my own personal exploration of and investment in the Android OS.
I'm now interviewing business/operational candidates who are experienced in leading and driving startup operations, and who absolutely love the full spectrum of this mobile industry.
If you are such a person, or have recommendations about such a person, please PM me. I live and work in San Francisco, CA, USA. Thank you
It is not only me but many many others who are still surprised how come a thread is not open for Samsung Wave yet in xda-developers. Whilst it's ancient predecessors like Omia etc are present.
It is again not only me but many other are looking for the right forum for samsung wave but at the moment although there are lots of samsung wave forum can't really any worthwhile problems being handled like how xda-developers would have handled proactively with its talented chefs.
Just as a glimpse at the kind of wave this device is creating around the globe: Have a guess how many it sold in its first month? A million, yes. Now this is quite different. Bada is a new operating system. New operating systems don't sell a million in a month. Android did not sell a million in its first month, not even in its first quarter. The only other new smartphone OS that managed to sell a million in its first month was the iPhone in 2007. Now Bada is the next best new OS launch since the iPhone. But most people didn't hear about it. Many don't even know that Bada exists.
Well, much of that reason is that the Wave is a low cost smartphone and is aimed at Emerging World markets. It sold about 280,000 of those Wave phones in China. But that's more Wave phones in one month, than iPhones sold in the whole of second quarter in China - the second largest country for smartphone sales in the world, behind only the USA.
Therefore going by the above I would say if xda-developers opens up a forum for Wave, then I am sure this forum will attract even more users in line with the above strategy.
Please open a forum as I am also owning the phone.
I agree.

Didn't see this posted in the forum, but I thought it was an interesting read (not saying I believe it all though)

Google's got an Android problem
[/i]By David Goldman @CNNMoneyTech June 26, 2012: 11:46 AM ET[/i]
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- More than half of the world's smartphones run Android. That sounds like a pretty comfy perch for Google, but it's a precarious one -- and the historical tides that made Android such a stunning success are starting to swing in the opposite direction.
On Wednesday, Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) is slated to unveil the latest version of Android at its developers conference. Expect some victory laps. The four-year-old mobile operating system is the center of a thriving ecosystem, and Google has seamlessly integrated most of its key products into Android, including search, Gmail, Chrome, Maps, Voice.
That gives Google a prime position in the fast-growing mobile realm.
But Android's success is partially accidental. The software only took off when Verizon Wireless released the Motorola Droid in late 2009.
Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) needed a weapon to counter AT&T's then-exclusive deal with Apple. It threw all its weight behind the Droid, which was the first true iPhone competitor on the nation's most popular phone network.
Kickstarted by Verizon, Android went on to become a strong iPhone alternative for virtually all other hardware makers and wireless carriers. Google's mobile OS held a 59% share of the smartphone market as of last quarter, IDC analysts said.
Android's climb is about to end, IDC thinks.

What I thought as well. From many articles I have read, the expectation is that there will be a slight dip in market share when iPhone5 is released then things will return to normal with Android maintaining its hold on the smartphone market.

Ha. Google is hiding stuff. Maybe a newer nexus with PB & J Android 5.0

IDC is naive in thinking that Android's climb is over. U.S. smartphone share just past 50% and elsewhere in the world there is even more room for growth. To count Android out of taking a cut in this is just stupid.
Android's success is no accident. One phone did not make Android a success. Google's business model did. It offered a free platform for device manufacturer to use. Even now, all other platforms either require a licensing fee or is not available for licensing. This is why Android is thriving.
As long as iPhones keep their hefty price tag, Android will always be around. I think many people are not willing to spend that much on a phone.
That being said, it's true that when the next iPhone comes out, Android may take a hit. The high end Android phones may lose a bit of their market share to iPhone 5, but that's about it. We've seen the same effect with iPhone 4 and 4S. So it's just gonna happen once again. Can't complain, competition is good!
rumours
I've seen more than one prediction that Androids climb will be slowed moving forward. Frankly I can see why.
Most articles like this also mention the rise of WP, which will be the wild card. WP8 has a lot of potential, combined with Nokia I can see great things moving forward. Honestly who doesn't want a Purview WP8 phone?
We'll see what happens but I see Android and WP duking it out for top stop in a few years. Couple that with W8Pro tablets.....
PS. Iphones will always be around, even though I'm sure their share will diminish greatly unless they pull one hell of an actual innovative rabbit out of their hats...

Not only a phone, but an inferior one. Or overpriced.
Hopefully Android will be gone within 2 years.

Take it from the standpoint of a writer, that article was written for views.
When people want their blogging read by others, they post unpopular, unwarranted and even untrue opinions, facts, rumors, etc to attract the eyes of a reader.
Tell half a billion people you think the mobile OS they're running is going to fail...like that's not gonna get readers you guys got trolled
So did I, I came in here and read it too lol.
From reliable sources, I have found out a reason to be very happy. It was on November 5'th 2007, that Android first unveiled itself.
The Wikipedia Link : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_android#History
It says:
On November 5, 2007, the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of technology companies including Google, device manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung, wireless carriers such as Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile, and chipset makers such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, unveiled itself, with a goal to develop open standards for mobile devices.[9] That day, Android was unveiled as its first product, a mobile device platform built on the Linux kernel version 2.6.[9] The first commercially available phone to run Android was the HTC Dream, released on October 22, 2008.[30]
It has been a long way, and we are still the most popular operating system out there.
One of the websites out there, Pocket-Lint made an announcement...
Link: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/48311/happy-birthday-android-5-today
What is strange though is that Google itself hasn't really celebrated the fact. No fanfare, no new announcements (we were partly expecting Android 5 to be announced - the portents were strong, certainly), and no Google doodle. Doesn't mean we can't toot into a party blower on its behalf, though.
