[Q] Nexus 5 Smart Dock? 11 pin USB? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does the N5 have a 11 pin USB connector? If so, do you think it might work with the Samsung Smart Dock accessory? I'm aware that I can use SlimPort to perform a similar function but there is not enough charge current to sustain long usage.

It seems like 5 pin connector

I have nexus 5 and by looking at the USB port it seems like it has only 5 pins and probably there are no pins on the other side of the plastic. Can not tell with 100% confidence unless I open apart my whole phone. But my friend has Galaxy S4 and looking at the top side of the Galaxy S4 I there is a small dent on the top side of the port whereas there is no such dent in Nexus 5 port so it seems that Galaxy S4 port in non standard but Nexus 5 is standard probably only have 5 pins. If this is correctly sadly we can not enjoy features like Samsung Smart Dock on Nexus 5. At the moment I am trying to achieve using Game Pad and Charging the Phone concurrently on Nexus 5 but probably it is not possible may be possible with some special Kernel, there is one such kernel for Nexus 7.

Modding the original samsung dock

After buying the dock and seeing that I've paid $24 only for a piece of plastic with a connector I decided to dig a little deeper into it to make it better.
So, I was assimilating information from these topics:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155065
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16342363&postcount=4
I started to put my knowledge at work and this is what came out - see attachments.
Basically I can now use my charger of choice and at the same time I can plug in USB stuff.
The small relay inside is switching the power supply for the USB host from the 5V output of the tablet to the main 5V supply when you are plugging in the power adapter (the original or non-original).
The button next to the USB host (I know .. it is white .. but they were not having other colors at the electronics store ) has the function to switch the connection of the USB port from the regular OTG to the circuit that is enabling the AC charging on the tablet. So, when I'm not using the usb host capabilities the tablet will charge in fast mode, with full current.
There is one interesting thing I've found. If I'm plugging in the tablet with the switch in the fast-charge mode and after that I'm switching to USB-Host mode, the tablet will still continue to charge in AC mode (see snapshots for proof ).
I have to mention that all the original functionality of the dock has been preserved and the 30 pin connector at the back can still be used with the original intent (with the proper cables).
If anyone want to replicate this mod and needs additional details, just ask and I'll gladly answer.
Very cool. Lots of great details and pics.
One word: Brilliant.
Good work mate.
Awesome what about a HDMI port?

The hdmi has to wait a little. I have ordered a mhl adapter on ebay but is gonna take a while until will arive. An on top of that I need to find time in my crowded schedule.
Could you please supply the wiring schematic diagram of your mod? That would be a lot helpful. Thank you.
This is awesome, great work! Shame it doesn't come with that full USB port stock. If I get one of these tabs, I'll definitely be looking to repeat your work.

awesome, can't wait to see your update of HDMI
I'm sorry not to have provided the requested info but my daily job is currently killing all my time (including the theoretically spare time). I'll draw the schematics ASAP and also I'll re-order the MHL adapter since the first one got lost in the mail (and I've been reimbursed).
Anyway, as a heads-up - I'm thinking to put the MHL adapter on top of the dock so I'll keep the original port accessible (and also the audio jack). I still don't know how exactly I'm going to do this ... but I think I'll figure it out when the time will come.
thats quite innovative

apparently the dock has hdmi passthrough meaning you still need the samsung hdmi adapter (http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-3PHPBEGSTA) I haven't yet tried my dock with my hdmi adapter, I will do tomorrow and let you know - good luck incorporating that too
awesome job mate...schematics would be really helpful. Can't do this mod on my own, but my father is more than capable...I think i have project for him (if you can find some time to draw those schematics off course )
Would it be possible to modify the dock to disable data and only enable AC charging? I'm using the Tab in my car and every car charger I use seems to only send 500mA of current to the Tab so it dies a slow death in my car and needs to be recharged at home once a week or so.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Can you show where you soldered wires to in the dock?
Bought one and want to charge at same time as watch movies from usb device.
Anybody help me?
Have you thought about making and selling these?. I for one would certainly buy one!. Wouldn't have the balls to try and do it myself...... av
Hi guys,
I've put together some schematics. Sorry for the lack of very deep details but I can not take the glue off my board and other hi-def picture I was unable to find so you will have to use an ohmmeter to find out the exact pins based on the clues in the picture.
Basically, in the attached picture is the implementation I currently have in the dock. Due to the lack of free time I was unable to continue with implementing the MHL adapter inside so I guess I'll drop that one.
If you need any details based on the attached picture do not hesitate to ask.
Full size picture: http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/83/dockmod.png
And to answer the ones asking if I'm thinking to sell these : Actually that thought crossed my mind. I have other mods done on my Galaxy Nexus also (see the Ringke inductive charging mod) and also other great stuff that I'm building by exercising my hobby. Unfortunately, when I'm pushing like 70-80 hours a week on my daily job there is little to none spare time left .. and the little I got I'm spending it with my son. In a relative future when I'll have more spare time (or no job) I'll consider starting a business based on the know-how I've gathered until now.
thanks for update...
Just purchased the break out board so when arrives will give this a go!!!

usb host, hdmi & charge...AT THE SAME TIME!
I just wanted to point out a similar thread posted in the "galaxy tab plus accessories" forum. This may have already been done before but i figured it would be much bigger news if so. XDA member "emil_b" claims to have modified the multimedia dock to simultaneously do hdmi out, trickle charge the tab , & serve as usb host! In case some of u may not know, the same dock works with ALL tab variants(PERSONALLY ONLY TESTED WITH P1000, P7100, P6200, P6210 BUT 99% CERTAIN) so if this proves true, this should be shared with all the other tab forums in hopes that it can be made into an actual product.

i cut the dockstation and my GT-7310 works wonderfull with the ( i say modded ) dock.
mini hdmi works and the rest too. only one problem is there now, i but a little piece of paper behind the tab and dock, for the perfect fit xD
okay the cuts look terrible but i work on them

Using Nexus 5 as gaming console

Hello,
right now I am a more or less pleased Note 3 user. The past days made me thinking about a switch to the Nexus 5. More and more reasons come up, mainly I don't use the Note features that often and I hate TouchWiz. I got my hands on a Nexus 5 and all I can say is that this phone is beautiful and blazing fast. Despite the obvious (smaller screen, no pen, smaller battery, etc) I want to ask you if the following works as good on the Nexus as it does on my Note 3.
I like to connect my phone via MHL to the TV and play games using a Dualshock3 controller in combination with the SixAxis app. Playing Asphalt8 my phone losses about 40% battery in about 2,5 hours (It's connected to a 1 amp. USB port of the TV). Games like Asphalt 8 run very smooth.
I know the Nexus doesn't use MHL but Slimport. And the SixAxis app should work, root implied.
Here are my questions.
1. Does Slimport suffer from a bigger latency than MHL?
2. Is the phone also charging on a Slimport connection? If so, same amount?
3. Is it possible to charge the Nexus via Slimport (if answer was yes on question 2) AND wireless at the same time?
4. Does the Nexus 5 support USB OTG (to pair the controller)?
Many thanks for your time.
Bjorn

Thanks, this is the only questions that remains unanswered. Does anyone know?
It is possible to charge it while using Slimport, but that also can depend on which Slimport adapter do you have. I have some Chinese adapter with built-in USB cable, and it is working great...

Wireless charging will not work at the same time as wired charging. Also charging while playing games can lead to significant heat.
I would hold out if I were you. As mentioned, charging and game play are going to cause heat.
There are rumours of Amazon releasing a dedicated android console so perhaps, waiting is a good idea.
Na, these consoles suck. At least the ones that are already there. My Note 3 is way better than every existing console. And I think the Nexus will be to.
Im not talking about existing ones. but sure, if you want to stop playing every hour to recharge, go ahead

[Q] Dock Mode for Galaxy Note 4?

I found my Note 4 have dock mode with the old dock for other Samsung's phone. But doesn't work with the audio out.
Have anyone know the purpose of the dock mode for the Note 4?
Or there is audio out for the dock mode, which only my dock doesn't fit the electric requirement?

Does your Note 4 have the "Audio output mode" setting in Settings, General, Accessory, Dock? That's what tells it to use external speakers when it's docked.
Does it output via hdmi? 720p, 1080p?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Also, is it an official Samsung dock?
Official Samsung Multimedia Dock (for Note 2 & 3)
I have verified that my official Samsung multimedia dock works EXCEPT that the standard audio out jack does not appear to work.
HDMI audio works in both stereo and surround mode. Video is output at 1080 30P.
Has anyone tried it with the plain OEM desktop dock (EDD-D200BEGSTA) that just has audio output? I wonder if the Note 4 doesn't handle all of the extra outputs of the fancier one (EDD-S20JWEGSTA).

Correct! This is one reason I went back to a Note 3 for now.
If you search you'll find that this has been discussed at length in several other threads. I'll sum up here for you though- basically the Note 4 at this time does not support audio out over USB the way the previous gen Galaxy devices did. This means it won't work with the desktop docks or with the car docks/cables that split audio and charging on one cable. Essentially any device that tries to provide both audio and charging simultaneously through the usb port will not work. The Note 4 WILL support audio over USB with a USB OTG cable and a DAC, but you can't charge while using them.
However, Android 5.0 Lollipop does have audio out over USB included as a standard feature, so it's quite possible that once we get the 5.0 update this will begin to work. I haven't been able to find any solid proof, but my suspicion is that Samsung knew that 5.0 would have this feature included and so they just didn't bother to build it in to the initial release of the Note 4 (interestingly the S5 also suffers from this). Why take the time to develop a feature that's already being included in the first software update anyway? Again it's just my own personal theory, but I wouldn't be surprised to have this feature start working once we get Lollipop.
Anyway, a simple search of the forum will turn up a bunch of other info on this, take a minute to look!
With Lollipop now, this feature does not work. Could be a hardware limitation.
I believe it has something to do with the Fast Charging capability.
Standard USB uses only 2 pins for power, meaning either of the remaining pins can be utilized for audio, probably the data+ pin, or possibly the second ground pin.
However with fast charging, the data+ and data- pins are used to communicate with the charging controller, so they can't be used as audio out. This seems to be the case, as an old "faster" charge cable I made way back does not work with Fast Charging. (the cable was made by an old common trick where you short the 2 data pins in the USB A side, essentially telling the phone no data was going to be used, just charging."
I have the Multimedia Dock as well, and I noticed that limitation when I got the phone. Though honestly it didn't bother me all that much, as the Note doesn't like to stay in it anyways, and I rarely used the audio out.

I bet you're right, but I don't know of any other phones that have audio out to compare against. For example the Nexus 6 supports dock mode for Daydream, but I haven't found any docks that can activate it.
How to activate Dock Mode
I discovered that with the app called "Smart Connect" you can customize what apps will activate based on what peripheral device is connected. You can set this up for the usb dock, 3.5mm input, etc. You can control what happens when something is connected and when it is disconnect. You don't need root either. This isn't perfect, I still preferred the way the Note 2 and 3 worked but it does help.
Youtube video on this issue
we go over this in our video on YouTube, no go on the audio out for the Note 4.

The dock could be used to attach usb dac to phone and to charge phone at the same time, right?
The question is: will usb dac & charge work at the same time if I connect dock to low level usb power cable? e.g. if I connect dock to car charging adapter?
We unfortunately do not have a USB dac to test this.
Yes i can confirm that using a usb dac with smart dock obviously does work.
The only thing that does not work as it was said before is the dock audio jack.
My dack is my best workaround solution so far.

[Q] Qi charging reciever - non-USB models working with Nexus 9?

Hello everyone. I've been considering a purchase of the Nexus 9 and was disappointed to to read that it lacks Qi wireless charging built-in. I've found Qi to be a very useful feature for many of my Nexus devices, from my old Nexus 4 and 7 to the modern N6, so it seems odd for it to be omitted for the N9. Thus,, if I end up buying a N9, I'll be interested in adding Qi charging capability.
Qi charging receivers seem to come in two forms: those that use the external micro-USB connector on your device and those that don't. Those using the microUSB connector have the obvious drawback of "taking up" said connector as well as possible issues with the detection of wireless charging , so I'd ideally like to use one of the models that doesn't use the micro-USB plug. These models (such as some of those made for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5) are completely internal and interface with the battery via other connection points, typically residing under the back cover of the device. An example can be seen here - http://www.fonesalesman.com/collections/qi-wireless-receivers/products/s5-slimpwrcard . I am guessing the viability/ease of install for such a receiver is dependent on the device model, so I was wondering if anyone had performed a similar modification on their Nexus 9?
Any ideas? Thanks!
So the Samsung phones were designed this way so they could sell you a separate case to add wireless charging. So it was designed to add it easily... I've seen something like this added to a non Samsung phone but it required some soldering and I'm sure lots of skill. I agree with you that qi charging seriously should have been in the tablet. At the very least some form of quick charging. My least favorite part of the tablet.

Android tab which supports OTG and charging at the same time

I'm looking for devices (Android tablets) which supports OTG (to connect slave-devices, e.g., a mouse) and charging at the same time
There was a thread about Nexus 7 https://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/help/usb-otg-charge-t3588019
It needed a custom kernel to get OTG+Charging working
But it's very old, you can't buy a new Nexus 7 anymore
Also someone mentioned about Samsung tablets:
Samsung tablets for sure can support OTG Host/Charge for a tablet and peripherals. Here is a list of supported tablets:
Samsung Galaxy Tab A (10.1″)***
Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (8.0″, 9.7″)
Samsung Galaxy Tab E (9.6″)*
Samsung Galaxy Tab A (8.0″, 9.7″**)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 (8.0″, 10.1″)
Samsung Galaxy Tab S (8.4″, 10.5″)
Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro (10.1″, 12.2″)

But these devices are also quite also and Samsung devices aren't that cheap anyway (if buying a new model)
So... Are there any devices (on sale) with normal prices which support OTG and Charging at the same time?
It doesn't matter if there is one port (input) or two (one for OTG and one for charging). Some Windows based tablets has a separate port for charging
Does Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 (quite cheap) support OTG+Charging at the same time?

What you need is a "powered USB hub", it has its own power supply and it will allow you to connect multiple USB devices(mouse, keyboard, flash drive, etc..) and charge the device at the same time by connecting your phone charger to the hub at the same time.
I use a USB to microUSB adapter, then connect the adapter to a USB hub that has 4 ports, then I use the adapter to connect the hub to the charging port on the device, then I connect a keyboard, mouse and phone charger to the USB hub.

Well... manufactures don't give any information if their devices support all of this and what customers have to do to get it working (buy a specific hub or something else)
It's been two days and I only got reply from you. So we can say that it's not that easy and we can't be sure what to buy. I don't want to waste money if it's not going to work
Would be great if someone could really tell me which devices (tablets) support this feature, which hub should I get for such devices and so on
Did u have any luck with this?

Thanks for the summary. I am also looking for android tablets that support USB host and charging at the same. A few old tablets from LG and ZTE have both micro-USB as charging port and a full-sized USB port to host other devices. But they are quite old. So ACA cable might be the way to go.
Question: Do we need to patch android os as described here use ACA cable?

Whether it takes it is another question.
If it's rooted you may find that you can control something to make it take it.
I've used back-powering hubs to power Androids.
This is a hub that has been modified to present power on the upstream port.
You can modify any powered hub to do this.

Has anyone come up with any solutions to this problem? I see this thread is a year old but I am here with a samsung tab A 8.0 2019, I have the exact same problem. I need to an external usb in service while charging, not one or the other.
The use of a specific value resistor on the USB OTG ID pin to ground is pretty manufacturer specific.
Some devices have up to a 5 bit non-linear converter on the ID pin to give up to 32 modes.
I've found Samsung to be a fan of using the OTG ID pin.
I would definitely try values from short to 1 k to 1 M (in an exponential progression).
I don't even remember which device this is, but it gives you some idea of the values they might use:
Code:
0
2000
2604
3208
4014
4820
6030
8030
10030
12030
14460
17260
20500
24070
28700
34000
40200
49900
64900
80700
102000
121000
150000
200000
255000
301000
365000
442000
523000
619000
1000000
Open
If you're rooted you may be able to control the charge controller directly.
Some of this could be a pain if you were plugging/unplugging all the time.
If this is some hard-wired, fixed usage you could definitely hard wire your own 4 V charger into the battery.
You might try getting a few pots 10k, 50k, 250k and some 220k resistors to try your luck.
Whoever is reading this I can assure you that the Samsung tab A does not charge while OTG. Jamming a resistor in there to short out the sense pin is not a thing. These are pwm charging and have been for a while. Even after spending $100 on the OTG cable alone it's still not working.. rooting.. twrp.. none of It makes any difference at all

How do you even do that? An OTG adapter is < $5. A connector is < $1.
OTG adapters normally have the ID grounded right inside the connector so you can't use that unless you chop up the connector.
You need to make up your own micro USB connector.

I don't have a Samsung Tab A so there's only so much that I can say.
All devices have a linear or DC buck converter that feeds USB power to the battery.
All devices (that do powered OTG) have a charge pump or a DC boost converter that feeds power to the USB jack.
Both of these are under control of the processor.
Look in your kernel source under usb/otg
You should easily be able to see if you have an ADC on your OTG ID pin or if it's just a GPIO.
Look at your device under /sys and see if there is anything suspicious with "adc" in its name.
Code:
find /sys -name '*adc*' 2>/dev/null
In worst case you'd have to modify a driver.
Y otg cable (replaced 4 pin micro usb connector with 5 pin micro usb connector) + 68k + 20k gives fast charging and data commuincation on Galaxy Tab A 2016 (SM-T585)

Woe woe woe!!! I had fully given up on this tablet and didn't check back here out of anger and frustration. I have a hard time getting any support.
I am having a hard time following your technical speak. How do I get into that menu? Are you willing to give me a hand with this? Those commands look like ADB??
The charger I purchased was from a company called "lava" you can find them easily online. It was a Y cable that was almost $100. It didn't work.
