Using Nexus 5 as gaming console - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
right now I am a more or less pleased Note 3 user. The past days made me thinking about a switch to the Nexus 5. More and more reasons come up, mainly I don't use the Note features that often and I hate TouchWiz. I got my hands on a Nexus 5 and all I can say is that this phone is beautiful and blazing fast. Despite the obvious (smaller screen, no pen, smaller battery, etc) I want to ask you if the following works as good on the Nexus as it does on my Note 3.
I like to connect my phone via MHL to the TV and play games using a Dualshock3 controller in combination with the SixAxis app. Playing Asphalt8 my phone losses about 40% battery in about 2,5 hours (It's connected to a 1 amp. USB port of the TV). Games like Asphalt 8 run very smooth.
I know the Nexus doesn't use MHL but Slimport. And the SixAxis app should work, root implied.
Here are my questions.
1. Does Slimport suffer from a bigger latency than MHL?
2. Is the phone also charging on a Slimport connection? If so, same amount?
3. Is it possible to charge the Nexus via Slimport (if answer was yes on question 2) AND wireless at the same time?
4. Does the Nexus 5 support USB OTG (to pair the controller)?
Many thanks for your time.
Bjorn

Thanks, this is the only questions that remains unanswered. Does anyone know?

It is possible to charge it while using Slimport, but that also can depend on which Slimport adapter do you have. I have some Chinese adapter with built-in USB cable, and it is working great...

Wireless charging will not work at the same time as wired charging. Also charging while playing games can lead to significant heat.

I would hold out if I were you. As mentioned, charging and game play are going to cause heat.
There are rumours of Amazon releasing a dedicated android console so perhaps, waiting is a good idea.

Na, these consoles suck. At least the ones that are already there. My Note 3 is way better than every existing console. And I think the Nexus will be to.

Im not talking about existing ones. but sure, if you want to stop playing every hour to recharge, go ahead

[Q] Moga + Slimport = lag

Here's what I have:
- Nexus 5 32GB
- Moga Pro (original)
- CableMatters SlimPort adapter
- Moga Pivot App
I cannot get 2 feet away from my phone, otherwise the controller loses signal and controller inputs (directional pad, button presses) get really laggy and janky, or are just flat out not registered.
Super GNES is flat out impossible to play. Super Mario World has at least a 1-2 second lag from button press to actual result on screen, regardless of how close I am to the phone.
What gives? Moga is offering to replace the controller, but I'm honestly wondering if the phone is just having too much trouble rendering the game on the big screen and accepting inputs from a bluetooth controller.
Any other info is needed, let me know. Thanks!
Sorry that I can't help directly with your setup but I have a slimport on the way and I use a Nyko Playpad with my Nexus 5. I'll get the phone hooked up my TV and the controller when it arrives and see how it works to see if I have any problems.
Have you tried running the phone in flight mode and then enabling bluetooth as the only wireless connection? Also try killing all background processes? Are you running a battery saving app which throttles connections or CPU?
That is unfortunately the extent of my phone knowledge - turn various options on and off till I've exhausted all options then cry for help online ?

I use my Moga Pro Power with a Slimport adapter and it's been working great for me. Been playing NFS:MW, Riptide GP2, and Conduit HD. No lag here.
I haven't tested it with any emulators but native games work just fine.
What slim port adapter are you using?

Have you tried playing a regular game and not an emulator? I wonder if it's because of the extra processor power required to run an emulator.
I have and I run into the issue where if I'm more than a couple feet away, the game does not register controller inputs. I don't think it's the Nexus 5 because this is an RMA and I had the same issue on both (unless it's a software problem). I have ZERO issues if I play without the slim port connected.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Just tested playing both super GNES and a regular game from about a 10 foot distance on just the phone, and zero issues with connectivity. It's clearly when I'm connected to the big screen that's the issue. Now the question is:
1) can the phone not handle all those inputs at the same time? (why does it need to mirror on the screen at the same time?). Is there just too much awesome going on at once?
2) Is it the slimport adapter?
3) is it my onkyo receiver?
4) Is it my hdmi cable?
I want to rule out the above 2-4, as I've had issues of control presses flat out not being registered, but I'll keep testing it out. Hopefully someone else has had this issue and found a solution.

What length HDMI cable are you using?
I remember that my SG3 wouldn't work on a 5 metre HDMI lead but would on a 2 metre one. Not sure how Slimport differs from MHL but try different cables to be sure and different ports in the tele.

Same issue here:
Nexus 5 32GB
Android 4.2.2
Moga Pro Power
CableMatters SlimPort adapter
Moga Pivot App
With just the phone & controller, everything works fine.
If SlimPort is plugged in, I can't get more than a few feet away without losing control/connection
This happens regardless of whether the HDMI cable is connected to the slimport.

Just figured out how to fix mine. Wrap the slimport adapter in foil.
Cheap adapter must be radiating crap in the 2.4GHz band where bluetooth lives.
I'm going to give your solution a try tonight. It sounds plausible that the adapter is affecting the bluetooth frequency and we'll see if foil fixes that, and keeps the aliens away. Will follow up.

The one you can buy from Samsung works. Keep your eyes open for a 50% off coupon.
you can probably get one from Monoprice.com pretty cheap. Just check to see if the microUSB end is a 5pin or 11pin. You may need to get a 5pin to 11pin adapter.
Confirmed a generic mhl adaptor will work with a 5 to 11pin adaptor. With or with out power cable. I keep a power cable on it because it drains more battery while playing
I had one that worked with my Note II and it works just fine with my note IV
So it looks like Samsung didn't mess with it this time.
I read some of the reviews for the Samsung mhl adapter ,lots of complaints about it not charging the phone fast enough and it stop working after a while. Guess I'll have to try it out thanks for the responses .
Do you need the 5 to 11 pin adapter with the Samsung mhl adapter?
I have the Samsung one and it's working great. It charges the phone enough so that the battery doesn't drain while the phone's connected. Don't get me wrong, the percentage may go up, but of course not as fast as if it were charging normally. And it certainly doesn't go down. So all in all, a worthy investment.

I just ordered the MHL 3.0 HDTV Adapter from Samsung's store and I think that may be what you're looking for. Unfortunately, I can't provide any user feedback for it myself because I haven't received it yet. Probably will once I do.
I think the reason why the Samsung MHL adapter has been getting bad reviews, particularly for the Note 4, is because they're using the MHL 2.0 adapter, which supports everything from the Galaxy S5 and older.
The MHL 3.0 adapter supports higher power charging and should be able to support the Note 4's power demands, as well as display out 1440p video, something the MHL 2.0 adapter can't do.
I'll report back on the Samsung MHL 3.0 adapter after I receive it (hopefully Monday, ordered it just this morning).
I'd post a link to the adapter but I haven't posted enough to have the permission to.
Also, like previously mentioned, there is a 50% coupon code out there. Apparently you were supposed to receive this when you registered your phone. I called Samsung's store support phone number about this and they confirmed the 50% off coupon does exist and that it may have gone to my Spam folder. After I told her that I may have accidentally deleted it (I try to review my spam folder before deleting but it is HARD when you receive hundreds), she was happy to do the order for me with the 50% off over the phone. I guess YMMV but just throwing it out there because it's possible. People from New York City interested in this, your total would amount to $31.51 after tax and shipping charges (via UPS 3Day/$3.95)
Edit: If you haven't registered your Note 4 with Samsung, do it and you will receive the 50% coupon code minutes after registering it. My coworker just did it for his Note 4 and got the coupon code via email.
Have you considered getting a Chromecast? You can mirror you phone to your tv wirelessly. Best thing about it is it only costs $35.00. I've got 3 of em and use them regularly for my Note 4 and other devices I have...highly recommended
Do you need wifi in order for chromecast to work??

I tried setting up chromecast using fox fi ( I don't have a home isp ) don't think its possible to set up without wifi.looks like a hard wired connection is the way to go.
Anybody use one of those HDTV adapters that have usb, sdcard spot and power area. It looks really cool.
Okay, so I finally got the official Samsung MHL 3.0 but I had to wait til I got back from work to test it out.
*********
Only tried it briefly, and it's exactly what I expected and yet kinda floored with the results after testing several wireless mirroring with my Note 4 lately.
If you need a video out display for gaming, where input lag needs to be non-existent, accept no substitutes, the MHL 3.0 adapter does the job like it's supposed to. I tried playing Secret of Mana with it and it feels just like normal console gaming. I don't have to play mind games with myself to convince myself that it's good because it is. Press left, you move left, right there and then.
*********
EDIT: I wrote the above earlier but I need to change my opinion on that after trying the adapter for a longer period of time. There *IS* STILL lag with the MHL 3 adapter. It's much shorter lag than any wireless solution for sure though... I'm talking in the microseconds BUT it's still noticeable enough to affect your experience. This was evident to me when I was playing Sonic The Hedgehog and depended on precision input to make jumps and avoid spikes and pits. At first I thought I was just playing real bad, but when I was playing while looking at the phone's screen instead of the TV I did just fine. I think it might be a framerate issue when projected to the TV. The gameplay just feels slower, inputs feel heavier. If you have a Game mode on your TV it will definitely help this issue and does lessen the lag, but the lag is still there. That said it's playable unlike with wireless streaming, although it's really compromised gaming. I don't recommend playing this way.
I can also confirm that Samsung's MHL 3.0 adapter *WILL* power up and charge the Note 4 while gaming (and I'm using a Dualshock 4 bluetooth controller too) when used with the stock charger. No charger is included with the adapter. No HDMI cable is included with the adapter either. You'll need to supply both on your own. If your TV has a 1.0A USB port or higher, it will also be able to charge your phone. 0.5A USB ports though (on older TVs) will NOT have enough power to keep up with the Note 4.
I was worried about the width of the adapter's USB connector since I use a case for my Note 4, but I'm happy to report that it will still be able to connect without the need to remove the case. I did have to wedge it in to get a secure connection to the microUSB port but it will fit. For reference, I'm using a Tech21 Classic Mesh case.
If you want to stream video, don't want to worry about dropped signal connections, and do not mind a (what frankly feels ancient now) tethered setup, this adapter will also do the job for you. Just be careful to get the MHL 3.0 adapter and NOT the MHL 2.0 adapter. The 2.0 adapter won't be able to keep up with the Note 4's battery discharge even when it's connected to a power adapter.
Beware though, if you're powering the adapter using the TV's USB port, it will NOT keep up with the Note 4's discharge it is an old tv because it most likely has a 0.5A USB port. If you use the charger included with your phone though you will be fine. It's not fast charging but it will charge your phone.
I can post up a YouTube video a bit later or maybe tomorrow.

If you're in the market for just video streaming, like previous users suggested, the Chromecast is a pretty good bet for now. Its specs are getting long in the tooth and there's rumors of a new version coming out in the relatively near future, but it still does an admirable and versatile for cross-platforming between Android and iOS if you own both types of devices. Since the Chromecast is dependent on a wifi connection (it won't work on a wired-only environment) its reliability will vary from user to user. For example, the Chromecast uses only single band wifi- the 2.4 range. I live in an apartment with TONS of wifi connections and the 2.4 is congested enough to take a performance hit. Wifi connections perform way better on 5.0 for me. That's why I experience disconnects sometimes on the Chromecast.
For gaming, the Chromecast does an impressive job when screen mirroring, but that 0.5 to 1 second lag is still noticeable and just not good enough for action gaming. It WILL leave you frustrated if you attempt to try it, and you will play like you totally suck at the game too if it's an action game. For slower games or turn based games, it will just test your patience and tolerance lol...
Chromecast's screen mirroring for gaming still performs better than a miracast connection with a Netgear PTV2000. The lag on the Netgear was just a lot more noticeable... maybe a 1.5 to 2 second lag?
For wireless video streaming, I recommend the Chromecast over standard miracast from a miracast receiver like the PTV2000 because on apps that support Chromecast, you can sling the video over to the Chromecast and still use your phone to do other stuff, and use other apps simultaneously. It may be the closest experience you can get to Apple's AirPlay on an Android device like the Galaxy Note 4. With a standard miracast connection, it's strictly screen mirroring. You can't multitask. If you close the video player on the phone, it closes on the wireless display/TV.
If you have a reliable local wifi connection and just mainly do video streaming not gaming, I recommend a Chromecast over the MHL 3.0 adapter solution. Going wireless is just so much better than having your phone tethered to the tv.
But if you are gonna go for the official MHL 3.0 adapter remember to get the 50% discount from Samsung's store. I think that would make it the best going price out there (24.99+ tax&shipping) for the official brand adapter. I don't recommend getting it for the full $50 though. That's overpriced as hell.
With the 3.0 mhl you can mirror correct? I want to watch xbmc lol

Yeah it can mirror. It's the only type of display out it can do. So your phone and your TV will be playing the same thing at all times. It's probably the most reliable screen mirroring option out there. But ask yourself this: Do you really want a wired solution?
For video streaming I actually prefer the Chromecast. It chokes up every now and then but the freedom of a wireless connection is so much better.
---------- Post added at 07:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:48 PM ----------
I can see where the MHL 3 adapter has its uses.
If you need a portable HDMI adapter solution for on-the-go presentations or video-out to an HDMI display, it's for you. It's more reliable than a Chromecast/Roku Stick/Fire Stick because it doesn't need wifi to work. You'll just need to supply the HDMI cable. It can also run on the phone's battery without a USB wall charger and display-out for as long as your Note 4's battery can hold.
I DON'T recommend the adapter for gaming though. It's a shame. It's so close but it just comes up short to fulfilling expectations.
In the end, for me, I DON'T think the MHL 3 adapter is worth it. Its original price is expensive and my Chromecast can do the same things wirelessly and better, and it's cheaper.
Buy a Genuine Samsung one. No doubt, that works 99% of the time.
Can confirm, just registered my phone even though I purchased it on 11/17/2014. Immediately recieved my 50% off coupon for an item less thn 50 dollars. Convienently enough, the MHL 3.0 adapter is 49.99 Out the door for $30.78. Thanks you guys for the heads up about registering. Now to find a coupon for a discount on the VR headset, lol.

[Q] Charging Nexus 9 while using OTG cable/usb hub?

As the title says, I want to charge my Nexus 9 while using a keyboard/mouse and other peripherals that I would have connected to the Nexus 9 through a USB hub. I know it is not always possible to charge through the hub, so I was thinking about something like a 'micro USB splitter" that expands the micro-USB port into 2 micro-USB ports: one for the charger that comes with the Nexus 9, and the second port for a OTG cable/usb hub/etc. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I did read this post here for the Nexus 7 but not sure if the same is true for the Nexus 9.or if any additional options existed for the 9. Ultimately, I guess I'm wondering if it is unrealistic to expect to find something that charges the device at the same time as using a hub/OTG cable without too much modding or hassle? My device is rooted and I've flashed some mods and tweaked some things on previous devices I've had, but am by no means an expert so I would hope to keep the hacking/modding for something like this to a minimum, if possible. Plus, there's an outside chance I may return the Nexus 9 in the next week so I wouldn't want to get too crazy until I knew for sure I'd be keeping it.
I understand that a specific kernel with certain capabilities may be needed, but I'm unsure how to find out which kernel would work and if it would be compatible with stock ROM or CM12 (when it comes out). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's a pipe dream, I'd at least know not to continue to waste my time looking for a solution that doesn't exist
I tried this one a few days ago but it did not work: https://sites.google.com/site/sonicboomworld/my-projects/otg-and-charging
Maybe it's possible with the right resistor value.
Edit:
Mod for Nexus 7 - needs kernel support:
https://mehrvarz.github.io/usb-host-mode-power-management-nexus7/
Thanks for the reply - is this kernel still being supported by the dev and is it confirmed working on Nexus 9?
I don't know as i do not own a Nexus 7.
But even if he still supports this kernel it would not help much for the Nexus 9:
A kernel is very hardware specific and the OTG changing issues is even more hardware specific.
There is absolutely no chance that you can simply use the N7 kernel on the N9.
One of the amazing kernel developers (who owns a N9) here at XDA would have to look at it.
Generally I think for "OTG + charging" to work the USB chipset on the device has to support it and/or you have to find out how you could trick the device into enabling this mode (with a certain resistor on the USB connector and/or with a kernel modification).
The bad thing is that no device seems to support the official "USB Accessory Charger Adapter" specification. (see section "OTG micro plugs" here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go for details)
Just to give you more information, there was a nexus 7 kernel by flar2 called ElementalX which had OTG + charging support. He is working on ElementalX for Nexus 9 as well, and he said he may or may not add support for it. If you and maybe others are interested, I'm sure that it will get added upon request.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's a pipe dream, I'd at least know not to continue to waste my time looking for a solution that doesn't exist

The company I work for is developing a OTG cable that does exactly that: lets you charge your phone/tablet while using a USB peripheral.
We are testing it in the UK market currently, but not selling in the US at the moment. You can check it out here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sansys-Char...F8&qid=1417298449&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+otg+mlc
We were thinking about doing a kickstarter or indiegogo for it, but not sure the amount of interest in a niche device like this.
Can you confirm that it is working on the Nexus 9? (and/or the Nexus 5)?
If it is, I'll order one immediately. I've been looking for such a thing since I had my Galaxy S2.

I can't confirm that it will work on the Nexus 9, but my partner from China is sending me a sample so I can try it out. I have a Nexus 9 and 5 also, and they'll be the first devices I will test it on.
We've also sent a couple out to some Youtube reviewers as well, so there may be a video review on them soon.
We just put up an Amazon US listing for this cable if any of you in the states want to try it out: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OLKFR44/
I should have one in hand in the middle of the week to test out.

This arrived from Amazon today. Unfortunately I can't get it to work. When the micro usb is plugged into the N9 it lights up blue. At that point I'm able to mount a thumb drive, use a mouse and Playstation controller. But once the other end is plugged into a charger the light goes off and whatever is connected stops working. The N9 begins to charge at that point. If plugged into my PC, same thing.
Note: the blue light goes off when other end is plugged in regardless of if anything else is in use.
BTW, running elementalX kernel and Lollipopalooza rom.

I've heard some people say in certain other situations with OTG + charge, you need to plug everything in first, then plug the OTG cable into the device. Try that and see if it works?

Thats a bummer, thanks for the info.
Would we happen to need a kernel that supports simultaneous charging and data transfer? I bought a usb y cable and that only allows me to use one or the other. Which sucks .
Some devices have been known to work with only modified OTG cables such as galaxy tablets and experia phones.
What would this modification be?
I finally got a chance to test out these cables. I thought my first cable was busted so I ordered a 2nd one.
I'm VERY sorry to report that this cable does NOT support USB OTG AND CHARGING AT THE SAME TIME. It is not just your device.
Apparently, there was some miscommunication between me and by business associate in China that lead me to believe that this cable would function this way but it only functions as a USB OTG OR CHARGER CABLE. Language barrier didn't help since I do not speak Chinese and he does not speak English very well. If you read the description, the functionality of this cable is not very clear and obviously written by someone with English as a second language. And also, I can see how the photos can be misleading as well. He went and listed this product on our Amazon account to sell before he even sent me a sample for me to test out and I'm kinda mad at him for doing that.
I was pretty excited at the prospect of it doing OTG and charging at the same time, but now im dismayed that this cable cannot do it. This whole thing was a waste of time to try to bring a product like this to the US that bares little benefit other than being a 2 in 1 cable that can replace a regular USB OTG cable and a Charging cable (albeit a very short charging cable). Sorry that I got your hopes up guys
I do want to clarify exactly what this cable does though: Basically all it does is switch from Charging mode to USB OTG mode depending on how you have it plugged in. If you plug the cable into the mobile device only, the blue light will turn on, letting you know that you can use the USB OTG port. However, once you plug the other end of the cable into a charger, the blue light will turn off, and the cable goes into charging mode. The USB OTG port will not work or light up again until you remove the cable from your charger.
hey there everyone, i'm trying to understand this a bit more. i have the same cable, but my understanding is that it wont work unless the kernel supports it. does anyone know if this is possible to actually fix in the Nexus 9 kernel? i really need this for a project

Looking to get a nVidia Shield K1, have a lot of questions...

So I think this is what I'd like to get to replace my Nexus 7 (2013) but have some questions before buying.
1. Does anyone play Hearthstone on this? It lags like crazy on my N7.
2. Does the Shield have any touch screen issues? My N7 has the grounding issues, so touch when it is say on a table instead of in-hand is sketchy at best. Do NOT want a repeat of that problem.
3. Does the Shield allow for OTG interactions? Specifically I have a Fiio DAC that I use with my N7 and my Droid Turbo that I'd like to use to power my headphones.
4. What is the battery life like? I assume in game its still pretty short? No wireless charging on this I assume.
5. Are the cover and pen worth getting? The pen does not have a hover dot tracker like a Wacom tablet or the S-pen, correct?
6. Can a DualShock 3/4 be paired with the Shield? Maybe using Sixaxis from the play store?
7. Can apps be installed to the SDcard? 16gb seems quite small if you install a lot of games.
That's all I can think of right now, thanks for any help!

1. I Don't play Hearthstone, but I doubt you'd have any issues playing it on this Tab, it excels at gaming.
2. Haven't heard of any touch issues with the K1. I have the older Shield Tab and touchscreen is fine.
3. Haven't had any issue with OTG use. I've only tested a USB thumb drive and a USB keyboard - they both work fine.
4. Battery life really depends on what you do, the tab definitely drains if you're gaming. I think the new Marshmallow update has helped with idle battery life. There is the Performance/Power optimization settings that you can toggle. The tablet is not known for having amazing battery life, unfortunately.
5. The cover is a good buy. It has a strong magnetic pull that keeps it angled and its awesome to set it down and just watch something on a train, plane or even a counter. The cover also has auto wake/sleep. It does not do much beyond that besides being pricey. The stylus isn't anything special, other than having a finer tip than most capacitive stylus out there. If you don't plan to use it much, not worth getting especially now that the K1 has no slot to store it (you'll likely lose it). Buying the stylus really depends on your use case scenario.
6. You can pair PS3 DS controllers via sixaxis. I have paired mine before. Likely PS4 controller would work.
7. The tab supports moving apps to SD and the marshmallow update also has the ability to adopt your SD card for use. I don't use apps on my sdcard so i cant comment much, but I see people mentioning it all the time on the forums.

Hi!
I have a SHIELD Tablet K1 since 2 weeks, I can reply to some questions (some answer from @Gilbot are more precise):
1. Hearthstone works good on this tablet. It is not ran at 60fps, seems to have a 30fps framerate locked, but very stable.
2. I have only one screen touch issue : when plugged to my wall charger (5V - 2.4A), the screen touch isn't responsive. Otherwise, it's ok.
3. I use un OTG adapter to plug my wired Xbox 360 controller, and it works great.
4. The SHIELD Tablet has not wireless charging. For the battery, without gaming, you can have a SoT between 4-5hrs, more with optimisation and maybe a custom kernel.
5. I haven't the NVIDIA pen. But for the official cover, I can say that it's a good cover, very useful.
6. I have read that the Dualshock 4 can be paired simply by bluetooth with touching 3 boutons on the controller. For the Dualshock 3, you need Sixaxis.
7. With the Marshmallow update, you can use youd SD Card as a internal memory. So, your apps can be installed directly on this.
Thanks for the help guys, still unsure. Just seems weird buying years old internals and having it be the fastest out there.
It's definitely fast. They did good. For the money it's great. It competes with tablets 2x it's price and wins. The speakers are really good too.
Sent from my SHIELD Tablet using Tapatalk
How did you get your PS4 to connect via Bluetooth? I'm still trying to figure this out.

Have had the tab for about 2 days, my n7 2013 usb port was starting to give so it was time, came with 5.1.1 out of the box, updated to MM, its been a great tab so far.
1. Hearthstone is stable, you won't lag with the k1 gpu running games.
2. The touchscreen is responsive as any out on the market as long as its off a charger or hooked up to a charger that has specs close to stock: Output: 5.2v @ 2.1A If you choose to use a charger that isnt close to spec then you will have touchscreen issues (I myself noticed it the first day)
3. OTG works out of the box on stock kernel.
4. No wireless charging as stated before.
5. Can't comment didnt purchase the stylus
6. You can use both a DS3 and 4, not sure if you can by default pair a DS4 without Six Axis (got rid of my PS4 a few months back) as for the DS3 you can use the DS3 over OTG and with the Six Axis app running. In MM six axis will not be able to access BT due the permission changes in MM (the dev of six axis must update). Ive been using the DS3 over otg while keeping Six Axis running (in settings make sure to enable Gamepad in Gamepad Settings section also u must change the master id of the ds3 with six axis pair tool to match the tab bt address) so far the controller has worked in Never Alone, Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones, personally I will be buying the Shield controller but if you dont need to charge the tab while gaming you can use a DS3 over otg, there are other options but none are as elegant as Nvidia's own product. Also buying a new DS4 if u dont already have one is essentially the same price as a Shield Controller.
7. Lastly with MM you can choose to adopt your MicroSD as internal storage, however doing so comes with some caveats. You lose the ability to use the MicroSD on other devices as MM formats the drive as a 128 bit encrypted ext4 disk, any data u already have on the MicroSD gets erased when you do this. Also once you do this the MicroSD essentially becomes nonremoveable as it becomes the default storage for your device. You also lose the ability to access your internal storage. You can in the settings move apps back and forth between the two, but access to the internal storage via USB connection or File Explorer is lost until you revert the MicroSD to portable storage, again doing this means you lose data on your microSD. The other option would be if you root to install App2SD and get a 64-200gb MicroSD and use the app to create a 2nd partition on the MicroSD and migrate and link your Apps and Games Data via App2SD. This option retains your internal SD access, you then have 1 partition to be able to move your apps/game data, and 1 partition that can be read by any device for movies/music/photos.

ASUS ZenScreen GO MB16AP - Will it work with Dex?

https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/MB16AP/
I'm thinking of getting the Zenscreen Go (when it's available) to work with Note 9's Dex mode since it can double as secondary screen for my laptop too when I need it. However, I'm not sure if it will actually work with the Note 9. Any ideas/comments?

I don't see why it won't work. Be cautious though for a battery drain, since the monitor uses USB-C for its power as well, instead of using (having) its own battery.
I'd recommend for you to get a HP Elite x3 Lap Dock instead if you meant to bring it out for "portability" (15.6 inch is not portable for me at all) if you plan to mainly using it with your phone. Just think of using your N9 as a bonus of getting it work with a laptop.

The MB16AP has its own battery. The big question is when will it become available.
Yea, the screen has it's own battery. I know Dex works using USB C to HDMI, but I'm not sure if USB C to USB C will work with the Zenscreen or not.
I have considered the HP Lapdock but without the phone it is just deadweight. At least the Zenscreen can serve as a second display for my laptop so I'll be getting more utility out of it.

USB C to C will work. I use an HP Elite Lap Dock with a USB C connector..
Regarding HP Lapdock, it is not. If you're using Note 9 with it, your phone will still functions as usual. The deadweight happens if you're using older DeX phone that doesn't support dual screen DeX.

Asus is coming out with a touch version of the MB16AP, but I've searched high and low for the model number and came up with nothing, and who knows when it will come out. In the meantime I ordered the MB16AP on ebay which is the non-touch version with the battery and it should arrive next week. According to the Asus website, it should be compatible with any android phone (version 5.0 or above) and most laptops with Displaylink drivers. So I assume it will work with the Note 9 in Dex mode.

Good to see ya here in the Note 9 forum TS ! :good:
Nice!
Wow i'm sure glad I saw this.... been looking for something like that HP Lapdock. I got the Sentio Superbook and after a year and a half it was quite a let-down. Tech just changes so fast and the user experience was not good. Played around with Dex and it works well for my needs.
Well that external monitor (MB16AP) came in this past week and I've been testing it with the Note 9. First of all, she is a beauty. Works with the Note 9 and DeX without any issues. On the Note 8, I had blackouts and all sorts of issues using either a hdmi or vga monitor. Since then I've upgraded to the Note 9 and the same issues appear but less so. It was somewhat manageable. I figure it may have been the monitors and not the Notes. But when I hooked up the Note 9 to the Zenscreen MB16AP, wow what a difference. Smooth as butter.
The only issue I've encountered is since the Note 9 and the Zenscreen use a single USB-C cable, there is no way to use any usb or usb dongle wireless mouse and keyboard. You are either forced to use the built in Note 9 keyboard and use the touch screen as the mouse. The monitor finally showed up on Amazon and its about $50 more than on ebay due to the shipping. But at least Amazon has a way better return policy that the two outfits on ebay that are selling the model.
I did a somewhat review of the monitor on Amazon.

I was about to get a zenscreen go, before I got an HP X3 Lapdock. I'm rly glad I got it instead, cause I was gonna get the Zenscreen, and a BT keyboard and mouse to mimick a lapdock like miracast.
No need for that nonsense now. If anyone gets an HP lapdock, the only combo I've seen work consistently is the Snapdragon Note 9 + The american Lapdock model which starts with a V. All the other models have various things that don't work. They start with a Y. I'd also avoid getting a refurbished one, as it's not known is they used parts from other models that are not compatible with the Note 9. Just get it new on amazon or ebay. new.
I got the HP Lapdock and boy so glad I did. For my needs it's perfect. Everything works great and the battery lasts a long time.... I ran it over 7 hours yesterday to test. The only thing that doesn't work is left and right clicking on the touchpad do nothing. You have to use gestures.... but I use a mouse anyway.....
Seriously Samsung needs to make their own lapdock for dex.....

I have an Asus MB16AC that I use with my laptop. I tried it the other day, but the monitor would only power on for 1-2 seconds. This evening, I charged the phone to 100% and tried again.
Using the USB-C to USB-C cable to the Note 9, screen mirroring works great, but only lasts for a short time. Playing video makes the monitor power off even faster. Definitely a problem powering the display from the phone.
Switching to Dex mode makes everything go black. I assume that Dex mode takes more power.
I'll order a powered USB3 hub and try again. I can't seem to find a USB-C hub that has USB-C ports, except for one that does PD (Power Delivery).

Have you found a solution for the power? Wouldn't charging the phone with Qi help or USB-C PD is needed? I have not found any adapter allowing out on phone, and in by another USB-C that would send power.

Yes I can place the phone on a wireless charger while using the USB-C cable to send the DEX display to the monitor. But it seems the monitor is taking up more juice than it gets. Thus depleting the battery eventually. You would think that if the Note 9 is supplying the power to the monitor that the monitor would not use the internal battery but it seems that it does. Then if the internal battery goes down to 0, it will not allow Dex to display until the internal battery has at least 5% juice. It baffles me why Asus did not include a splitter of some sort or have the device have another USB-C port for charging.
btw that USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 cable by NekTeck is a suitable replacement for the OEM Asus USB-C cable.
