Planning to buy a Captivate

I recently had an AT&T Tilt die on me. Fortunately, I had warranty on it, so AT&T sent me a refurbished Pure. Its awesome and all, but now I am eligible for an upgrade on one of my lines. So, I'm planning on getting the Captivate from Amazon for $99, and sell the month old refurbished Pure on ebay or something.
What do you guys think? Good idea to swap a Pure for a Captivate? And would I be able to get around $100-200 for the refurbished Pure on ebay?
What about features? I know the Captivate has Android. Is it as customizable as WinMo? Anything I should keep in mind before I take the plunge?

I used to have a winmo phone a couple years ago, and I loved how customizable it was, but then I got the iphone because it was skinnier perfermed a lot nicer and had a lot more features.
now im going to be getting a captivate because it performs better than an iphone and just as much customization (or more) then winmo.

I had an original tilt (tynt2) up until the aria came out. I had been running an android rom on it for a few months and decided to switch. 30 days after getting my aria I returned it to Best Buy and got the captivate on release day.
I am loving the switch. My android fulfills the work, personal, and entertainment needs my winmo just couldn't get.
I will be checking out phone7 when it releases but I am not sure if I will be switching away from android. I suggest you go for it. Experience something new!

Selling rooted captivate or will trade for att banded nexus one, I don't care if its a step down. I miss trackballs, and fastboot.

Interesting. Its nice to see different opinions. Keep them coming. I need all angles before I make my decision.

If you on at&t the captivate its the best option. The only drawback I find over the iPhone its the appstore. The 3rd party apps on the iPhone are just way more Polish.

That's why i kept my AT&T branded Nexus One. I mean I love my Captivate, but it just isn't there yet like the Nexus One and plus the dev community behind the Nexus is second to none. It will get there, but for the time being the SIM card with my unlimited data plan and main number is in my Nexus One again, but i wont be getting rid of my Captivate either. I wish i could take the two phones and frankenstein me a nexus two. Nexus One body style with the 4" super AMOLED and MaxTouch sensor, 1 ghz hummingbird and PowerVR, and best of all Vanilla Android with Froyo. I guy can wish can't he. Until then i am happy with both just not ready to retire my loyal Nexus One, but i feel that when i do it will be for the Captivate. We just need the end of September to hurry and get here bringing us Froyo and we need Samsung to hurry with a GPS fix while the developer community grows.

I bought the captivate on release day. I have to say it's a great phone but it wasn't for me. There are a few issues with the phone that should be fixed by Samsung soon (major is just gps) but other than that its a good phone, it's more technical thats for sure. I had to return it for an iphone 4 instead, music is a big role that is a factor for me when i purchase a phone and although the stock player was ok it was nothing compared to iphone. Thats one thing no one can beat apple in...media. There is also a little bit of lag (launcher pro takes care most of it). If you buy it I would suggest you root it and make sure to back up the At&t apps...i forgot to do that lol, good thing best buy doesn't check

The only problems i have are some software issues that i assume samsung will fix - things that their skinning affected - like not being able to dial a number in a calendar invite. Not a show stopper, but an inconvenience.
As for customization - it is more customizable then WinMo mostly. WinMo was more wide open you copied files and futzed with the registry, nothing would stop you. Android, you have to root first - so an extra step. But compared to the iPhone much easier to customize. Rooting after an update is much easier then jailbreaking.
As far as other comparisons - I like the captivate better then my iPhone 3G, and passed on the iPhone 4. I think the media player in the captivate is superiour to the iphone - the interface is nicer, and easier and sound is just as good if not better then the iphone. More video and music formats are supported too, and even though the screen may not have the pixels of the iPhone 4 it is bigger and better looking. Blacks are black and that is what i wanted.
Android is not perfect, but it is catching up to the iPhone fast. iPhone has at least a year jump on Android, but I think the feature list will put Android on top soon.
I haved had phones of every OS, and Android is my favorite so far - the extent of the widgets is amazing.

I switched over from a BlackBerry Bold 9000, phone is night and day difference. The call quality is better, web browsing, youtube and the screen is awesome. The only downside I find with the Captivate is the lack of push e-mail scheme except with gmail but the plus side is no more truncation and actually get to see all of the html e-mails like looking at them through thunderbird. I will add that I love Android over Palm, BB and Windows Mobile, I have not owned the iPhone but I dont think I can because I prefer the 4 inch samoled screen.

You probably know already since you've been doing research, but the compass and GPS on the Captivate are totally busted at the moment. Otherwise, it's a fantastic handset, and as customizable as you could want.

I got the Captivate on release day, and previously used a Tilt.
The Tilt was running the stock WinMo ROM for most of it's life, but I got bored and flashed Polymod's 2.1 ROM to it at some point.
That's what made me get the Captivate.
The Captivate beats the Tilt and Pure in nearly every way possible. I don't think you'll regret the upgrade at all.
My only complaint is that the battery isn't the best on the Captivate, but it's not a big deal unless you go multiple days without access to a charger.
I say go for it.

My compass is completely busted, but my GPS is fine if I'm outside. It just takes a while to get a lock. Others have reported GPS being way off.

I've never had an issue with the compass unless it gets too close to a magnet. a few figure eights in the air resets it.
The GPS is a software issue, and will eventually be officially fixed. It also seems to be a hit and miss for some people that could be due to bad phone batches, times of day, location, or a million other variables. There are a few GPS fixes currently floating around that should improve any GPS issues at least marginally. they do not fix the underlying issues, but do help mitigate them.

Debating leaving Android for iPhone...

I was happy with my G1 back in October of 2008. It was great. Then, due to iPhone leapfrogging and hardware limitations of the G1, I needed a "better phone." Well, I got the first one that looked good on paper...The dreaded Samsung Vibrant.... the thing I HATED about it was the copycat look stolen from the iPhone, but, I put up with it. Then, right off the bat, I noticed that the gps didn't work. At all. I was lucky if it had me within a block of where I actually was. So, I thought it was Samsung. So I rooted and tried different ROMs. Still not happy with this glitchy, slow-ass phone.
Am I REALLY buying the marketing hype that the iPhone "just works???" I really like the Android system but am SO unhappy about the problems with the hardware etc. My wife and son ech have the HTC Sensation. Great phone but the battery? Please! Lasts 4 hours with decent use.
Here are my two problems with Apple:
1. Overpriced, and EVERYONE KNOWS IT. I have a problem with paying for a device that I KNOW has a HUGE markup in it. good for Apple, bad for consumer.
2. My wife, through her work has been given 2 Macbooks over the years. A white macbook about 12 years ago, and a macbook air a month ago. The original macbookHAD MORE PROBLEMS THAN ANY WINTEL SYSTEM I HAVE EVER HAD. So, we swore off Apple. Then comes the marketing hype. We actually bought into and believed (like the IT dept at her work this year) that the macbook Air was made by God hiimself. Like all apple products. The first week, it freezes up while she is making a powerpoint presentation. Totally frozen. Has to Hard restart. A week later, freezes up in WORD. Same thing, no soft reboot. Had to turn it off physically.
Anyway, I rant. So, on to my question -
SHOULD I STICK IT OUT AND WAIT FOR THE NEXUS PRIME OR GO IPHONE 5?
The Nexus Prime is going to be made by Samsung....
I am attaching a post I made earlier today on the tmobile forums regarding samsung just fyi.

It's even simpler. Be careful which Android phone you buy. The iPhone is excellent, but it isn't as perfect as it should be. And there are Android phones that are better than the iPhone. But you have to discover which ones. Usually buying your phones from a store with a good refund policy will help in discovering the good Androids from the bad.
For battery life, you cannot find anything better than the iPhone 4. For the iPhone 5, I don't know about the battery life. But it is assumed to be just as good. But iOS isn't as user friendly as Android. And you can...I know from experience...find Android phones just as pleasing and satisfying as any iPhone can be. And even more so.
I'd highly suggest the Nexus S or the next version of the Nexus. Or look at something from HTC, like the Sensation, if you're on T-Mobile, or the HTC Inspire if you're on AT&T.
My Samsung Infuse...a Galaxy S descendant...is quite outstanding. The GPS issues Sammy had with the Galaxy S phones is no more on their later phones.
If you want a work of art hardware wise and reliable and secure operation, get an iPhone. Just don't be surprised that you need to navigate through many menus to perform a simple function which, in Android, comes with the tap of a single button. And don't expect to do anything with an iPhone outside of using it's collected apps. There's no customization to speak of.

I personally have the Sensation and once it's rooted with a different rom battery life is much better and performance is X10 compared to stock. If you want a great performing phone with excellent battery life though look for an HTC phone with a second generation single core snapdragon processor. The Inspire 4G, G2 and the MyTouch 4G all fall into this category for AT&T/T-Mobile. Honestly the Inspire is one of the better built phones out there and this is coming from a tech that repairs phones all the time. Also not that the Inspire doesn't perform well out of the box, but running aosp android (cyanogenmod) from a phone with that kind of hardware makes for an awesome android experience. Only issue with this phone is no front facing camera which might not even be a big deal to you, I don't know.

Quick side-note. Although official 2.3 has not dropped, the speed of CM7 on the vibrant took it to a whole different level. Amazing. But no source = issues like no GPS at all and poor battery life. Thus my HUGE disappointment with Samsung never giving us gingerbread.

Smart Phone Guy Gone Astray?!?!?!?!?

Ok so here is my issue, I have been on the brink recently with deciding to go either with an iPhone or remain with the Android family. Hell I even referred to the the iPhone as the crap phone lol. A lot of people consider me highly technical inclined when it comes to anything and I am finding myself stumped here. I am into the whole customization thing which is why I like the Android OS, however with some of the issues I have having with Android and even the latest device from Big Red, the Droid Bionic my confidence level has went down. Just looking for something solid and a good company to back their phones and not take forever. I know there is only one company when dealing with the iPhone and with Droid there's all the different manufactures and them having to approve of what is in the update.
I have been an Android advocate since my first device which was an EVO and then to the Epic then back to the EVO and finally upgraded to the E3D. I had month long technical issues with Sprint with getting my phone repaired/replaced and their lack of customer service to help out someone who was a customer for the past 8 years.
I have since left Sprint last week and switched over to Verizon where I now have the Droid Bionic. Issue is now that I got the Bionic is that I am having issues with the OS having problems that from research that a lot of other users have the same problems. Also in my findings I have read that the fix for the issues with the Bionic will not come out until sometime in November and here it is now the 2nd day of October. Does not make any sense to me that it takes a whole month to roll out a fix for issues that a vast majority of the users have the same problems. I do not think I am asking for too much but geesh, I can't win or loose here.
Another thing that bothers me is that my girlfriend has the Charge and when we are in the same area with one another her phone has better phone reception, this is kind of the final straw for me and making me want to jump ship to the iOS and even get an iPad. Even while I was out tonight, her best friends husband has one and I couldn't put it down. Added more insult to injury. Only thing is for me to have the patience to wait for the release of the iPhone 5.
Not too sure if I am asking for too much, however I definitely need some guidance here, please advise smart people out there.

May not be of much help but the only thing I can suggest is to wait for the iPhone 5 to come out and see if you like it more.

Sadly given the market options out I don't see any purpose in android anymore... Whether or not you can customize everything just feels lower quality.

As a few weeks back daily iP4 user it's a pain sometimes. You really have to hold it different not to loos coverage or wifi.
This is no joke no matter what people say. It can get really annoying. Signal is worse compared to G1, Desire and now Desire Z that I use everyday. Glass. One accidental drop and chips appear. Very annoying and looks ugly.
IOS 5 has nothing that android already does (so far). Games quality is noticable if that is your thing.
If you get the chance, test it first. I know i will get it (I develop for iOS so it's a must) but still will use the Z as it is. Just like android more

I think the worst thing about this is how it will affect the everyday Samsung phone user. They've already shown they are willing to even preemptively alter software (local search) in order to avoid lawsuits and after the court loss it's only going to get worse. What updates are on the horizon as Samsung scrambles to avoid more jury "decisions" and patent cases? Sure, maybe it forces them to do something new and imaginative and finally dump the questionable TouchWiz, but the short term could mean bad OTA updates for people who bought an amazing phone. I know I won't be going back to stock.
Some people are wondering why Samsung/Google don't wage war back holding parts or search hostage, but the reality is that they need Apple more than Apple needs them. The gigantic marketshare they hold means Google needs their users eyeballs, and Samsung cannot lose the income from supplying iComponents. They even released a statement during the trial stating they considered the divisions absolutely sealed from one another, signaling loud and clear to Apple it won't even be a bargaining chip.
I hate this. It's all the more sickly ironic when you think back to Apple fighting to survive in Microsoft's shadow, now playing an even worse villain. And Microsoft is probably the one who wins from all this. It seemed like maybe the general tech press was starting to get wise and there was a small voice of outrage beyond just the Android community starting to form in the face of this bulls***, but now that the iPhone and mini-iPad are launching it's just going to be months of the gadget press fellating a minor upgrade in software and form as Apple steamrolls more competitors.

I never understood the Apple vs Microsoft debate, like If you want a PC, just buy one and forget about Mac, who cares it's a computer. But in light of current press, I see the reasoning and I also see why Apple needs to die. Shame on them

I would also guess that the parts Samsung sells for iPhones are under an ironclad contract and would just create another law suit. Maybe when that contract is up Samsung will double the price of those parts to get their money back.

Just be prepared for all the ones who havent purchased the SGS3 yet. Apple is now going after 4 more devices that Samsung has released since the trial to remove them from the market, and the SGS3 is one of them. It was all over Fox News yesterday. Greedy ass Apple cant take the fact that Android is overtaking them by storm, and they cant compete with the technology and speed Android now has over Apple.

What I am going to find interesting is what other technology Apple will try to use(if they try) since Samsung holds a Lte patent

Imagine the Iphone being banned in the US..... heaven....

I saw a list of just a few of the phones that were listed that apple wanted to ban from sales, some of which like the droid charge are 1. out of date and not a big seller anyway and 2. look nothing like the iphone. It amazes me to see how low a company will go to corner the market in the smartphone/tablet industry.
I also know that the galaxy s 3 is a target of apples and the court date is sometime in 2014, which doesnt make a bit of sense since by that time the galaxy s 4 will be out or had been out for sometime and a newer phone would be on the horizon. So the lawsuit to ban the product will be irrelevant, but apple will still try to make a profit off it due to patents.

Yeah the ban is not really an issue, but the damages will most likely be in billions of $. No really the issue either...

Part of the strategy is to hamper development of the S4, the same as Apple actually had a hand in the S3 (and later versions of the S2) being more round-ish than the original S2. Samsung will probably have to limit certain features of any new phones to avoid the traps Apple has laid (like having the product banned for using unified search, slide to unlock, spelling prediction, and any number of bone-stupid things Apple should have no business dictating to anyone else.) In dodging Apple's bull****, Sammy has more limited design options for the S4 right out of the gate- and like the S3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 that clearly they made look nothing like Apple's stuff... they'll probably STILL get sued.
I like to remind people how Apple blocking sales of the Galaxy Nexus reveals their true motivations. Why? The GNexus doesn't look anything like any of Apple's products, but more importantly, it runs STOCK Android- not Samsung's touchwiz. Apple could basically have sued ANYONE using the same bull**** reasons as they did to block the Nexus, but they once again went after a flagship device that they don't want in the market.
So next time you hear some Apple-apologist say the predictable: "Well if Samsung would just stop copying Apple blah blah blah..." just slap them. It's already public record: Apple sues to block Samsung's most successful designs no-matter-what. Resembles iPhone or not / Touchwiz or completely stock Android. Doesn't matter.

Apple is a lot of things, but one of them is not stupid. There is just no way that they have been this aggressive toward Samsung if Samsung truly does have this supposed hammer in their back pocket. Worst case, Apple has to pay fair licensing fees for standards essential patents--anything beyond that just doesn't pass the smell test IMO.

The latest iPad is 4G LTE, so I'm not quite sure where people get this idea from that Apple has/will have any problem using LTE in the iPhone 5.

I just came back to the droid universe, after my wife and I went thru seven Droid X2s. Verizon gave me a free move to an iPhone 4s, and I enjoyed it for a time, but I needed the LTE due to my iPhone really not doing well with data at my office. If I ever thought the battery was crap on the iPhone, I was sorely mistaken, it's terribad on this S3, and that's with Mobile Data turned off, using wifi. That being said, I am really enjoying the new hardware, and thank god there is a decent amount of community support for this device. And LTE just blew the socks off my fiber home internet connection, hell, it doubled it!
Side note, why do people compare hardware + software to the android OS? Pick an android phone and compare it to an iPhone. Don't lump every damn manufacturer of an android phone and compare it to an iPhone. The problem, for me, has always been that the iPhone has a bigger selection of apps and a LOT better accessories. Sounds simple, but when you can't find that exact case that suits you, owning an amazing device with little support... it sucks. I would never trade my new iPad for any android based tablet... can't say the same for phones tho. (although my iPhone just sold for $357 on ebay, which would never happen with any one year old android phone) I pray that Samsung sticks with this handset design... that will foster a lot of aftermarket support. Manufacturers don't like change. Make the internals better, make the the software amazing... just keep a form factor around for a bit. THAT'S why apple does so well, they have a ton of aftermarket support for a crap product that's a year or two late.

Side note, why do people compare hardware + software to the android OS? Pick an android phone and compare it to an iPhone. Don't lump every damn manufacturer of an android phone and compare it to an iPhone. The problem, for me, has always been that the iPhone has a bigger selection of apps and a LOT better accessories. Sounds simple, but when you can't find that exact case that suits you, owning an amazing device with little support... it sucks. I would never trade my new iPad for any android based tablet... can't say the same for phones tho. (although my iPhone just sold for $357 on ebay, which would never happen with any one year old android phone) I pray that Samsung sticks with this handset design... that will foster a lot of aftermarket support. Manufacturers don't like change. Make the internals better, make the the software amazing... just keep a form factor around for a bit. THAT'S why apple does so well, they have a ton of aftermarket support for a crap product that's a year or two late.

I'd have to think that you have a defective phone. Battery life on this beast is incredible. I easily get 24 hours and 4-5 hours of screen time on this phone. And that is with a much bigger screen than the iPhone. As far as resale value, that will be determined when the next phone comes out. I got $280 for a refurb rezound. Not bad.

I had an iphone 4s for like 7 months and I can honestly say that the battery on my s3 is as good or better than the 4s. Also I don't know what stores you shop at but every one I've been to has cases and such for the s3 widely available.

Yesterday was spent just getting situated with the phone and rooting it. Today I am going to read up a ton more and get smarter on it, hopefully, lol.
Regarding cases and such, you misunderstood me. I know we're both S3 owners, and we might even consider ourselves fanboys... but take the time to be honest about everything that goes with a phone, including accessories. We WANT to have the plethora available to us like Apple does, but we're not even close. Samsung finally stopped releasing different types of the same phone to different carriers, which helped a ton. Where you are not looking at is every other flippin Android device out there. I was a very early owner of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Very little community support for that device, even here on xda. Usually "community" turns into iPad or Galaxy Tab bashing... and there's not a ton of residual community. At least, for now, the S3 is sexy and everyone seems to enjoy them. The minute the S4 comes out... next year?, this community will dry up. That's the problem for me... I have seen what a large community can do for a phone, which touches almost every part of my life. Hell, I almost bought a rezound over this phone, because of the screen and the radio... but that community might as well be called a ghost town.
Quick question, are you saying a stock S3 is better than an iPhone with regards to battery life? I just started testing out the stock battery tools... trying to not load up a rom yet, as I seriously have owned the phone for less than 24 hours and want to at least know what I am fixing first, lol.

I'm 37, and have made my living in Mobile for the last 8/9years. I was part of a team that grew a Verizon Franchise from 2 to 37 stores in 3 states over the course of 7 years. At that time I would swap phones every time a flagship would release, but besides my first Droid(a Droid X) I didn't root(Howard Forums was all I knew then) and before my droid I had a few Treo's but hated them and would always go back to an LG 8100 or 8300(right before the droid I had the LG Dare, does anyone remember Verizon touting it as an iPhone Killer?, lol.) And while it killed many things, ie my patience, my respect for Verizon, and ultimately a little bit of my soul... An iPhone killer it was not.
Rooted the droid X, only to over clock(before my phone addiction, I would build a gaming rig every January and constantly upgrade it during the year)
Droid X, then droid 2 global(had to have the first 1.2Ghz phone), incredible 2, thunderbolt, Continuum(lasted 5 days M-F) X2, Bionic, xperia play, droid pro, droid charge,
At this point the iPhone came out, and I was in Love withe that until Last Summer(save for a brief but intense affair with the Galaxy Nexus)
Rezound... Then we sold the company and I signed a noncompete, and took a year off... That's when it started. I kept buying devices I had 5 lines and it was just my wife and I. And I used every single upgrade my parents/sister/brother had, that's why I swapped out. They kept flip phones for years, and when they were broke or wanted something new, they were cheap compared to data phones.
After 8 months I knew I wanted to open some stores, I love sales, I love the business, and its all I know, but I had time left till "I could" so I got a easy job as a "BigBox" manager in the town i bought a place in during my 8 month retirement. and this is where my phone addiction took root.
I have Transferred over the contractual liability for 2 lines to 2 family members so they could have unlimited data. So my wife had a phone and I had two.
Well fast forward 7 months, and I own every flagship device released on att and Verizon(besides the razrs)I thought moto made crap up until last week(but we know who had the major hand in that)
And of course as a BigBox electronics manager I took the discounted att manager plan, and now have fun buying world wide phones. Like my Padfone's, the xperia Z Ultra(should arrive Friday) 808 pureview, and now the 1020. And I root anything and everything. any free time is spent flashing and modding, on a perpetual search for the perfect ROM.
I am by no means anymore tech savvy than the normal poster on XDA, and far less than any Dev, but I live in a town thats the final pitstop to heaven for the elderly.
So this is the how and why, I think owning 13 unique types of phones(more overall, size, GE) in the last year is excessive.
Besides devs building Roms for multiple devices, anyone else like this. Right now there is no product that excites me and that sucks, I hope the ZU is that type of product with the s800, and 6.44 FHD display. And if not I hope something game changing gets announced soon and shocks us, because April is a Long way away, so while the edge is awesome by "right now" standards. Who knows then.
As I re-read this I can't help but see a pattern of insanity, all the phones(save for a few) are 95% more similar than different, and I'm trying to think when any of them felt different.
I'll tell u what though. I must like the HTC one, as I use that more than the nexus 4, S4, opti G pro, Nok1020 or find 5.

This, my good sir, sounds like an expensive hobby you have here.
But I certainly do not blame you. I'm a flashaholic as well. And if I could afford to own and tinker with every phone released, I would in a heartbeat.
I hope the S800 blows your mind. It sure seems like a solid improvement over the S600, which is already exceptional. I'm with you though—hoping for some groundbreaking products. I'll cross my fingers for the both of us.

It's cool to love phones, no problem there. But you're right, each of them, especially each new one released every few months, is going to be pretty similar.
Maybe the trick is to get involved with your phones in a different way? Like beta testing new apps, perhaps. That would have you getting bleeding edge stuff that other people don't get, but you would be more INVOLVED, writing notes back to the developers and stuff. This would let you keep getting new stuff, but on the same physical device, and the fact that you were contributing to something would probably be very satisfying.... which might keep you too busy to buy another phone.
