[Q] Bootloop and Broken Power Button - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is bootlooping and the power button has been broken for a while. I've tried various things posted in other threads, just wondering if anyone has any solutions or ideas.
I can't seem to get it to connect with usb in the bootloader but it does connect while bootlooping. Can I fix it while connected in the bootloop?
edit: Actually, now that I've researched more, I'm pretty sure the problem is that my bootloader is frozen. That's why neither my functioning volume keys or adb works in the bootloader.

Try Nexus root toolkit to boot custom recovery temporarily (or another option like that), while looping, ?may? work??

I can't seem to get anything in the Nexus Root Toolkit to work while it's bootlooping or while it's in the bootloader even though it comes up in my device manager as Google Nexus S ADB Interface while in the bootloop.
Is there a way to fix it in the command line, or is that just the same thing as using the root toolkit?

Can you get into recovery?

No I can't get into recovery because my volume buttons won't let me navigate the bootloader options. They aren't broken, they just don't work in the bootloader for some reason. My power button is physically broken though so I don't know how to get to recovery or if I can even use recovery without the power button...

I think fastboot will work without a power button?
This command...
adb reboot bootloader

1) Download latest CWM Touch.
2) Follow steps from here to install CWM.
3) Boot in recovery using the command in the above link.
4) Download a flashable touch recovery from here.
5) Mount USB in the recovery and copy this zip and flash it. This will make your custom recovery permanent. Reboot to recovery again just to verify.
Now, you have a touch recovery accessible through fastboot and can install custom ROMs

Thanks for the step by step! The problem is I still can't get the adb working in the bootloader to install CWM Touch. When I type adb reboot bootloader it says "no device connected." If I type the same command while the phone is bootlooping it says "device unauthorized."

You can't use adb in fastboot. There are fastboot commands for that.
Step 2 has fastboot commands to install custom recovery.

Very similar problem on Nexus 4

You can wait till the battery drain and then connect your phone to PC holding the volume button to enter bootloader and then using Nexus Root Toolkit flash your stock rom.

weird problem trying to unlock nexus s

a buddy of mine bought a nexus s off of craigslist that is constantly force closing when you boot it. it will force close everything then reboot itself. im attempting to unlock the bootloader but adb devices doesnt show the serial number like it does for my nexus s. when i hold down volume up+down and plug in the usb it goes to the unlock bootloader screen but it doesnt give you the option of yes or no. iv posted a picture to show what it looks like. i cant get the phone into download to try to fix it with odin either. any help would be appreciated.
edit: i finally got my pc to recognize it and we now have an unlocked bootloader, but now iv encountered another problem. i downloaded a recovery image and moved it to the tools folder of sdk when i type in the fastboot flash recovery command it responds with error: cannot load recovery.img.
To unlock bootloader, you have to use fastboot, not adb. So the correct command would be fastboot devices
To boot into the bootloader, you have to press volume up + power, not volume up+down and plug in the usb -- that would bring you into the Download Mode instead

i know, i used adb devices to see if my computer would even recognize the phone. i i can get into fastboot mode by pressing volume up and power but cant send a fastboot command to the phone because it doesnt recognize the phone. when i hold down volume up and down to get into download mode it sends me to the screen i showed in the pic. its the unlock bootloader screen except there is no option to click yes to unlock the bootloader. i would love to get into download mode and use odin hence why i pressed vol up and down and plugged in usb, but like i said it sends me to the unlock bootloader screen.

Before you try to unlock the bootloader I would flash the latest stock rom and see if it boots properly.

Try one of these recovery images:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686
The full command is
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
(make sure your recovery image file is actually named recovery.img)
If 'fastboot devices' returns your phone's id you can flash a custom recovery. Otherwise get a full _signed_ stock rom and flash from stock recovery.
Did you install all drivers? Deinstall existing and use either pdanet or sdk build in program to get them. You need like 3 different ones.
Try locking unlocking bootloader again.
There's always the chance you got a defective usb connector.

[Q] Trying to upgrade / unlock xoom

I am trying to update my mothers wifi XOOM to ICS. I own a Galaxy Nexus and love ice cream sandwhich a lot! I read the instructions multiple times and could not get it to work. I have ADB installed and the correct drivers, also have an OTG cable. I have rooted Eris, DX, Inc, Inc2, GNex and I can always figure it out. However a simple upgrade on this tablet feels impossible!
I can NOT get into recovery using volume down during boot. This does nothing and boots regularly. Tried about 15 different ways and 30 times.
I can not use adb reboot recovery or adb fastboot recovery
I also can not use adb oem unlock
Nothing seems to work on this tablet. When I use ADB to reboot it reboots but still work go into recovery or even the bootloader.
Any help would be much appreciated!!
**USB debugging is on and I have OTG cable

[HELP] Nexus S can't boot recovery

Hi all,
Been given a Nexus S i9023 by my brother who has been "tampering" with it and now it seems a bit messed up.
When booting up - it gets stuck on the "Google" screen with a padlock on it... I can get into fastboot and I can flash recovery but when I attempt to load any recovery - I get that same Google screen with the padlock! I've downloaded a stock rom and even flashed system etc via fastboot but that still gets me nowhere past the damn padlock!!
I've tried to "fastboot boot recovery.img" and I still get the Google screen with the padlock but it says "Fastboot status - OK" on the bottom left.
I've searched and searched but everyone just seems to give tips on how to flash recovery. I know how to flash recovery; it just seem to be going into it though! Could the internal memory be screwed?
Thanks for any advice!
Sounds strange for sure. You try from within the OS? Enable USB debugging and adb reboot recovery.
Doubt it will work but its worth a shot

The phone stops at Google with the padlock on boot! Can't even get into the OS. Going to try to unbrick it and Odin but left my ubuntu laptop at my parents and can't be bothered to go get it... couldn't get it to work booting off cd rom. Kept giving me the "SBL Injection Failure Failed to find device" error booting ubuntu on a CD!
You may have a storage issue.
I seen you tried to flash system and boot recovery with fastboot ( which should have booted) but did you try to flash them all and wipe. The command is fastboot -w update file name.
I think Odin is a windows only tool anyways by the way.

No idea why I said Odin - I meant the unbrickable recovery thing.
I tried Odin with a Jig last night; got it into download mode and flashed with odin. Got the same result.
fastboot -w also gives the same issue...
If I have a storage issue - is there any way I can tell?
Basically you can tell by the issues you're having. Doing all the proper stuff to flash images etc and still having a booting/working device.
As far as a actual diagnostic tool I don't know of one. But it sure sounds like a hw issue to me.
I have the following problem: since a few weeks I'm unable to enter recovery.
This is what I do:
- shut down my phone
- press the power button while holding the volume up
- than I get a screen where I can choose from 4 options using the volume controls and selecting an option with the power button
- I select 'Recovery' and press the power button
- I get the usual black screen with Google logo and padlock
- but instead of getting into my recovery, I get a black screen with a Droid lying down, the 'chest' opened and some kind of small warning triangle above it..somebody who knows what I have to do??
Thanks in advance

Flash custom recovery.img part
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/fastboot#Flash_Custom_Recovery.img
You need ADB (and ADB drivers installed, strongly recommend PDANet Android Drivers) and fastboot executable.
Custom recovery I suggest you use Clockworkmod Recovery.
I imagine your phone is already unlocked?

When u boot on the Google screen on the bottom centre does it have a padlock? If so then it is unlocked.
You are entering recovery. Stock recovery
If you want a custom one either flash with fastboot or if you're rooted with a app. Goo manager. Rom manager etc.
Keep it mind that if you're on a stock ROM the custom recovery gets overwritten back to stock when the phone boots up the os

In installed the drivers and I installed the fastboot executable, but what do I have to do next? If I run the fastboot.exe, it just quickly shows a CMD-window and then disappears.
Edit:
I just discovered that, when I'm at the bootloader (I think it's called that way, the screen where you can select recovery), and I choose to reboot, I get the same 'error' as when I try to enter recovery.
Edit:
Alright, I was able to flash a new recovery, using cmd, but now when I try to enter my recovery, the phone gets stuck at a black screen with Google logo and padlock...
I have same problem as wolverine_2k who made the post. My nexus, can't start, I tried reboot and recovery but didn't work. After reboot or recovery I see Google logo, than Nexus screen and that is it. It didn't move to home screen and it stay with lighting screen all the time till I remove the battery. I can't power off it and don't know what to do. I can't transfer data with my PC (it don't recognize the device - only notice that "unknown device" is connected). Please any ideas?
P.S.: My English is not good, if someone answer do it simple please
Thanks!

[Q] stuck in boot loop / pc not recognizing phone with adb

Hi,
I tried to install a ROM but it got stuck on the white screen with the HTC logo. I tried to do factory reset but it gets stuck again. I don't have clockwork recovery, and I rooted my phone using adb and ace recovery, which is not on my phone. I only temporarily used it to flash my rom, stupid I know. :-/ When I connect my phone to the PC it is not being recognized. I tried putting the PD98IMG.zip file on my sd card but it just says that it the image is incorrect. Is there anything I can do? Is this fixable?

I just went through some similar stuff. What type of computer are you using? PC/Mac? Are you using the original cable? What troubleshooting steps for connectivity have you done? Different cable? USB port?
Can you access the bootloader screen when you pull the battery and reboot while holding the volume button down and holding the power button? By accident, I found that the phone and PC will communicate with each other when "Fastboot" is selected on the bootloader screen (you should hear a connection chime and it should change to "Fastboot USB") except I could only get fastboot commands to work. The good news is that should be enough to flash a boot or whatever else you need to get back in business.

That's great you're getting the fastboot usb message! As long as you're not using a hub or some other usb extender, any functioning usb port on the pc will do. Again, I learned this by accident (ie the hard way) and found that in this mode, only fastboot commands will work, not adb. (on a side note, and others should correct me here, adb and fastboot work together when the phone is rebooted normally or in recovery but not in the bootloader screen)
Great test for connection: fastboot devices (if you get anything else except a serial # with fastboot after it, then close the cmd window, unplug, and pull battery/reboot to bootloader), fastboot reboot-bootloader. Once it reboots back into the bootloader screen, make sure you press the power button while fastboot is selected and you should again hear the chime and see fastboot usb come up. This is your phone saying it's ready to accept your fastboot commands.
Do let us know how it works.

I'm guessing that you're trying to flash a PD98IMG.zip or a RUU. You need an actual stock rooted ROM, probably from here on the forum. Or just flash Android Revolution HD, an optimized rooted stock ROM, also from here on the forum in the development section. For more specific steps read the Ace Think Tank linked in my signature.

ok, got it. Thank you again
Dear friends,
I have this problem: I got a brand new TCL S720 and the Google Play did not work, being a known rom issue. So, before doing anything, I've managed to make a backup of it's original rom with MTK Droid tools whichI supose it did it well. Then I've tried to install a CWM recovery to try a custom rom for it. The CWM recovery seemed to install succesfully but I didn't manage to install the new rom. If I remember well, it stucked on boot logo. Then tried to revert at it's original stock recovery, managed to have the phone back as it was in initial state, but doing more tries, It remained stucked on boot logo. The problem is that my computer doesn't recognise it anymore, when I connect it to USB it tries to install MTP usb driver but even before the driver was installed well, now it refuse to install, like the driver is not good or the proper driver doesn't exist. So the only thing I can do is to boot on stock recovery but even I tried to copy the original rom update.zip on external SD and to flash the phone using install update from sd card in recovery mode, It doesn't find the external sd card. So I'm stuck here, the computer doesn't detect the phone to try flashing it with SP flash tool or MTK Droid tool, and I also can't flash it from sd card. Have you any idea how to make it work again?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Stuck in "FASTBOOT MODE - NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG"

My NExus S is stuck on the screen that says:
Fastboot Mode No Boot or Recovery IMg.
Product Name - Herring
HW Version - Rev34
Bootloader Version - D720SPRKC5
Baseband Version - D720SPRLCI
Carrier Inro - SPR
Serial Number 32300E25C33500EC
Lock State - Locked
options to select
Reboot Bootloader (gives me exact same screen) except it only says "Fastboot"
Reboot Back to the "FASTBOOT MODE - NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG"
Recovery (Can boot to CWM but I can't mount anything)
Power OFF (That works fine)
Then the little green man and the android logo
Followed by USB Control INIT
USB Control INIT End
STANDARD_SET_CONFIGURATION
Conventional wisdom says download some files and fix via fastboot. However in fastbootI can't run ANY of the steps without running FASTBOOT OEM UNLOCK. When I run it my phone asks if I really want to unlock the bootloader. when I choose YEs and hit power it just freezes there.
My next thought Boot to recovery and restore. A restore through recovery followed by a reboot leads me back to the original no boot or recovery img.
Okay I'll just sideload a working rom by mounting usb storage. Then I can flash it with CWM and be up and running.
but when I try to do mount the USB Storage I get "E:Unable to write to ums 1unfile (No such file or directory)"
Finally, Last ditch Effort, I'll load up ODIN and use that to put on a working recovery. there's forums all over the place explaining how to do that right? Well yes, but the links to the Tar file are all broken.
What next my friends? I'd really like to get this phone working.

Your bootloader is LOCKED. You must first UNLOCK the bootloader by clicking "Unlock" on Nexus Root Toolkit.

No matter how I try to do it, it always freezes at the unlock bootloader step.
Did you install proper drivers?

I thought so. My wife is on the computer so if she ever gives it back I'll re-install the drivers and try again.

Reinstalled Drivers. Still no luck.
I have the same problem.
Same situation for me, because i pressed "Reboot" in CWM without having flashed a Rom (stupid ). Broken power button, hanging on Google logo or in Fastboot mode.
I hope RTK will help me :good:
Edit: I have no idea how to revive my Nexus S. Status: Broken Power button, Bootloop, can access Fastbood Mode but dont select someting, Bootloader unlocked, RTK doesn´t find any devices in Fastboot Mode, Device is rooted and has CWM

what about just using adb? Can you find it when you type fastboot devices? If so there's a command in fastboot to reboot to recovery I think.
I on the other hand am screwed. I read in another forum that it hangs on unlock because the internal memory is fubar.

Solution for me:
1. Turn device on into Bootloop
2. Connect it via USB (PC founds it)
3. type in CMD "adb reboot recovery"
4. device is in recovery
5. reflash everything i wanted :good:
Requirement is a working Android-SDK!
I wish it was that easy for me. I can access recovery just fine. It's the memory I can't touch. Unless someone knows a way to fix corrupted memory...
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda app-developers app
Im having this same issue too i can still get to CWM recovery but nothing really helps from there. I can still mount my storage and put zip files on there etc but nothing seems to fix the problem...any progress?
