[Q] stuck in boot loop / pc not recognizing phone with adb - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi,
I tried to install a ROM but it got stuck on the white screen with the HTC logo. I tried to do factory reset but it gets stuck again. I don't have clockwork recovery, and I rooted my phone using adb and ace recovery, which is not on my phone. I only temporarily used it to flash my rom, stupid I know. :-/ When I connect my phone to the PC it is not being recognized. I tried putting the PD98IMG.zip file on my sd card but it just says that it the image is incorrect. Is there anything I can do? Is this fixable?

I just went through some similar stuff. What type of computer are you using? PC/Mac? Are you using the original cable? What troubleshooting steps for connectivity have you done? Different cable? USB port?
Can you access the bootloader screen when you pull the battery and reboot while holding the volume button down and holding the power button? By accident, I found that the phone and PC will communicate with each other when "Fastboot" is selected on the bootloader screen (you should hear a connection chime and it should change to "Fastboot USB") except I could only get fastboot commands to work. The good news is that should be enough to flash a boot or whatever else you need to get back in business.

Hi, Thanks for the reply.I am using windows 7. I downloaded the drivers for HTC, and I am using a data cable and the USB port in the back of my computer, nearest the mother board. I do see "Fastboot USB" on the phone but when i type in the command prompt "adb devices" I get nothing.

That's great you're getting the fastboot usb message! As long as you're not using a hub or some other usb extender, any functioning usb port on the pc will do. Again, I learned this by accident (ie the hard way) and found that in this mode, only fastboot commands will work, not adb. (on a side note, and others should correct me here, adb and fastboot work together when the phone is rebooted normally or in recovery but not in the bootloader screen)
Great test for connection: fastboot devices (if you get anything else except a serial # with fastboot after it, then close the cmd window, unplug, and pull battery/reboot to bootloader), fastboot reboot-bootloader. Once it reboots back into the bootloader screen, make sure you press the power button while fastboot is selected and you should again hear the chime and see fastboot usb come up. This is your phone saying it's ready to accept your fastboot commands.
Do let us know how it works.

As far as I know, fastboot only works when your phone is in fastboot mode. ADB works in recovery or system.

Flash a rooted stock ROM from recovery. Whether you have root is in your system partition. Whether your bootloader is unlocked is in your bootloader. Whether you have a custom recovery is in your recovery partition. Three separate things.

I'm guessing that you're trying to flash a PD98IMG.zip or a RUU. You need an actual stock rooted ROM, probably from here on the forum. Or just flash Android Revolution HD, an optimized rooted stock ROM, also from here on the forum in the development section. For more specific steps read the Ace Think Tank linked in my signature.

ok, got it. Thank you again

Dear friends,
I have this problem: I got a brand new TCL S720 and the Google Play did not work, being a known rom issue. So, before doing anything, I've managed to make a backup of it's original rom with MTK Droid tools whichI supose it did it well. Then I've tried to install a CWM recovery to try a custom rom for it. The CWM recovery seemed to install succesfully but I didn't manage to install the new rom. If I remember well, it stucked on boot logo. Then tried to revert at it's original stock recovery, managed to have the phone back as it was in initial state, but doing more tries, It remained stucked on boot logo. The problem is that my computer doesn't recognise it anymore, when I connect it to USB it tries to install MTP usb driver but even before the driver was installed well, now it refuse to install, like the driver is not good or the proper driver doesn't exist. So the only thing I can do is to boot on stock recovery but even I tried to copy the original rom update.zip on external SD and to flash the phone using install update from sd card in recovery mode, It doesn't find the external sd card. So I'm stuck here, the computer doesn't detect the phone to try flashing it with SP flash tool or MTK Droid tool, and I also can't flash it from sd card. Have you any idea how to make it work again?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Nexus S not working...

I'm going to probably get a lot of hate for this because there are a ton of forums that might get me here. I did search for about 3 hours tonight and discovered some things but am still confused. I hope someone can help this be more simple. So a friend has a Nexus S that isn't working (I have a Nexus S by the by too). It's unlocked but no ClockWork on it. I can press volume up and power to get to fastboot mode. When I click on "reboot," the phone will just loop on the Google logo. If I click recovery, it starts to boot then shows the triangle with the exclamation mark. From there, I can press power and up or down on volume to get the blue screen which says reboot system now, apply update, wipe, wipe. You get it. I'm stuck...I can also turn off the phone, hold volume up/down and plug in the usb to get to "downloading..."
I want to get this phone working and back to stock. I have the SDK Manager (my phone isn't rooted so I use it to take screenshots) and pda net (which I still don't understand why or how to use with this) and two versions of Odin. It seems like Odin can get this working but I can't get it to work or find a clear guide on how to use it and which ones to use. This is a Tmob Nexus S, I think the i9020. Any help would be so greatly appreciated and I will give you all the credit. Oh, and i can pull up the device on ddms with the sdk manager and can explore the files but there is nothing. I can't find a way to drag a file on the phone to "apply update from /sdcard." Sorry again and thanks again!

It seems your boot.img file either corrupted or missing.
Find a working copy of file, flash it via ADB interface or fastboot. Flash recovery file CWM. If that doesnt work, Try flashing CM7 Rom or someother ROM.
Did you check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545 ?
Odin should be your last resort, if nothing really works for you.
If you want to return to stock, simply flash the NAND backup found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093 .

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I think I've made some headway...I can "see" the device with cmd by typing adb devices. After that though, I don't understand how to get the stock nexus s rom on the phone. How do I move that file to my phone (what's the line of code I type)? I've tried "adb install <c:\grh78> but it says the syntax isn't correct. Any more help is so greatly appreciated and I appreciate the already prompt response. Thanks!!!

Download your rom of choice (stock, custom)
Flash Cwm via fastboot if you haven't already
Boot into recovery.
Use adb push to push your zipped rom to the sdcard (adb push file.zip /sdcard/file.zip)
Use cwm to flash this zip.

Wow fast responses. I bet it's annoying to help yet another person having issues (again, phone was given to me like this but yeah...) while you guys or gals already know how to do these things very well. Here's where I'm stuck. I enter this code in cmd:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
and it just says < waiting for device >.
Here's a pic of the screen that I'm on with my phone when i enter the command.
http://imgur.com/Pey3W
If I'm just in the first screen by holding volume up and power, the computer won't read the phone. So I click recovery, the screen shows it's trying to install something then the triangle exclamation mark, i press volume up/down with power and get this screen and the computer can "see" my phone on cmd.
How do I get this flipping clockwork on this phone or get the stock image on my sd card? Thanks again for helping me out guys. I have taken a look at the links you have sent me and that's where i found the download as well as the code to enter. I will keep looking at them but if you find a faster solution, please let me know.
One more thing to be super clear on...when I'm on the screen on the Nexus S that says Fastboot Mode on top in red and Lock State - Unlocked...my computer won't read the phone, therefore I cannot fastboot the recovery img...

So you already tried "fastboot devices" while in fastboot mode?
Edit: Actually it sounds you really want stock so download the complete stock OTA ROM (including boot.img etc.), rename it to update.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard. Boot into the stock recovery like you did already and hit apply update.
EDIT: Go here to download the correct OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
Find the correct 2.3.6 "Full ROM" for your phone model. Sounds like in those instructions you don't need to rename to update.zip. Haven't seen stock recovery for a while so I don't remember.
If there is a wipe option in the stock recovery then do that first.
Yes I have tried fastboot devices in fastboot mode but nothing because my computer doesn't read the phone in that mode. And yes, I want to put the stock rom on there but that's the key, I can't get access to the root of my sdcard. I can't push anything into the sdcard to flash it. Any ideas what to type or how to access the sdcard? Thanks a million, billion.
Also, I can't get the phone to boot at all, like I can't get passed the Google Logo if I reboot so I can't access the sdcard in the traditional way.

If fastboot devices returns NOTHING then this is most likely a driver issue. Remove the device through device manager, make sure you have a recent SDK (for the USB driver) and let it re-detect.

If you can get into the boot loader and get a proper USB driver you should be able to flash a recovery.
Once you've flashed Clockwork Mod (recovery) you'll be able to push to the sdcard using ADB or possibly mount the sd card through the CWM menu (although I've yet to have that work).
In order to get a recovery flashed though you need to get fastboot to see your device (unless you can already boot into recovery, then just use ADB).

If he's stuck at the Google logo and has a trash boot.img it's not likely he'll be able to get a shell via ADB. Now, if the system is hanging starting a device or looping during boot then that's possible.

Indeed - I saw no clockwork and figured he'd toasted his recovery image as well, but it does look like stock recovery is there. ADB should push fine to the sdcard from recovery then.
More...so if i type in adb reboot bootloader in the recovery screen, it does just that...great. But then my computer makes a noise, a double tap if you will...like a dun dun, like something didn't work. When you plug in something to the computer it usually goes like dun na...but the phone clearly won't read when I'm in bootloader/fastboot mode. So when I type a command, nothing will work...

That noise is that it detects a device has been connected (assuming a recent version of windows). If you want to flash CWM you need to get the driver sorted for the device. No amount of plugging/unplugging is going to fix it.
If you have the stock recovery you can boot into the stock recovery, use adb to push the full OTA package to the sd card and then just flash that from the stock recovery.

Go to the stock recovery like you have done before and type the adb command I wrote above.
Thanks is all I can say. Okay so when I type in the command, this is what I get:
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -
the "stock recovery" I can get into is the picture I posted a link for. That's what I can access as well as the fastboot mode when I first turn on the phone with volume up/power. But when my computer makes the noise that it's connected (using Windows 7 64bit) it makes a different sound then the normal "device connected." Like it's corrupted.
by the way...if we can get this working, I'll post a picture of me holding the fixed phone!

OK firstly never close CMD when it is doing stuff that can cause damage to your PC, device etc. It can cause serious damage
I haven't tried this myself but you could try using a different USB connector. If that still doesn't recognise your device then it is a hardware problem or you have messed up you device.
If it works then download the sprint version and flash.
Hope this helped,

From a powered off state, if you hold VOL down and then press POWER, can you access download mode?
If yes, and you connect it to your computer (I'm going to assume you are using a windows computer), can you hear the device connected sound? It should get detected.

If you can get to bootloader and recovery, you're not bricked. You just need to flash a new rom, this time remembering to flash the boot.img in fastboot like the instructions say.

If 'fastboot devices' returns nothing, then you are most likely missing drivers. Easiest way to get drivers is install HTC Sync Manager. It will install the app and the drivers, you can safely uninstall the app later and still have the drivers stay installed

reboot to fastboot, but do not select bootloader (it should say "Fastboot" in red writing just underneath the green text and above the orange text.

Hmmm, when it rebooted it stopped at the htc screen? This sounds like it's not going to the fastboot mode. Reboot with the volume held down. That should get to the fastboot mode.

After I push the boot.img through fastboot, when I reboot it just sticks on the HTC boot screen. I can get to the fastboot screen but I already have the boot.img on there. What next? should it work?

go to your recovery and flash the ROM (the boot.img is just the kernel) if you haven't done that.

Hmm. so you probably need to flash a recovery first.
then you will be able to use the recovery to mount usb and put a new rom on your "sd card"
Then you can flash the rom on your new recovery and don't forget to fastboot flash the boot.img.
edit: the all in one toolkit is great for things like this. It will put a new recovery on your phone with just a click of the button.

I just edited my original post. just in case you didn't know how. I guess I was a little slow.
Also I can't remember if a bootloader factory reset relocked your phone but you might want to check that too. up on top it would say locked or relocked. If it still says unlocked you don't have to do that step again. Like you did when you first rooted the phone.
(all in one tool kit is great for unlocking and relocking too) just put a copy of that bin file in all in one tool kit (data file i believe, but it says what to do in that thread)

Your phone is an s3?
My phone is an S4 as are I would guess the majority of users. I think the s3 is the international version. If you are on T mobile then it's a s4.
Ok,,,
so .... if your phone is an s3 version then you will have to check that the Rom you download is specific for your phone as most of the Roms on this site are for the s4 version.
you need to go to your recovery. press the volume down button and hold it. Then press the power button (don't hold it). That will get you to recovery.
when in twrp recovery you will see a mounts button. hit that then the next screen will have mount usb. then you will be able to move a rom you downloaded on your computer to your phone.
then you can install the rom zip in twrp.
then from your computer, I assume you know how to flash a boot.img
put a boot.img in your fastboot folder, open up a comand prompt.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
if you wanted a different recovery than you are using, find the download the recovery. *I would rename the recovery to recovery.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
(I only mention a different recovery because in some of the Rom threads you might read that you can only install a particular rom with an older version of twrp.)
I'm not sure of your skill or experience with all of this. If you are very new to it (then you are probably really frustrated) have no fear there is a little bit to learn but not that much. Just keep reading the development thread and the guides in it.

do you have your box the phone came in?
Z520e is S4
Z560e is S3
So were you able to put twrp on your phone? when you are in boot loader and click on the recovery does it take you to twrp? Yes the all in one toolkit will flash a recovery for you. but you have your boot loader unlocked first.

what will the next step be? (if i need anything please could you leave a link)
thanks for all the help starting to feel i might win lol
in twrp when you press "mounts" then press "mount usb", does your computer finally see your phone?
I was looking at your first post, you say that you rooted and flashed your phone. What do you mean by that? Did you download a ROM and attempt to flash it? Or did you "fastboot flash boot boot.img"?
If you are able to access your phone via computer it is as simple as downloading a rom on your computer moving it to your phone then in twrp "install from zip". Then fastboot flash the boot.img.

if you are just fed up and want your phone back to stock then you will need to run an RUU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2094414
To run a RUU you would need to relock your bootloader.
in console type "fastboot lock oem" or use your all in one toolkit to relock it.
if that fails you will need to put your stock recovery back. (you need to have boot loader unlocked to do this)
on the clockworkmod recovery page the stock recovery is the second download link.

Do you know how to FASTBOOT FLASH boot.img which is present inside the ROM.ZIP?
Try wiping data, cache, dalvik. Then reinstall.

[Q] Unlocked, reflashed, app ran into problem phone restarted and bricked?

Hi there,
Im still kinda a noob with android...
but i managed to unlock my htc sensation trough the steps @HTC,
changed the recovery, tried to flash a rom.
it failed due to my phone not being S-off. so i flashed it back :/
no problem there i thought just a rooted htc.
downloaded an app to remove bloat. and all seemed fine...
I was playing Clash of Clans, and it gave a message that the Google play services stopped and the phone rebooted.
when booted the lock screen was frozen, i pulled out the battery to find out my phone is unresponsive..
When i connect to windows 8, it cant recognize my phone at all
When i connect it to a charger i dont see the charging light.
and the worse thing is.. i cant get into the recovery.
any idea's what i can try?
i checked out the [unbrick] tread but i cant seem to figure out which "Package" i need and the links on the bottom of the page dont work when i click them
Thanks in advance
-Aline
At first you have not to be S-OFF in order to flash a rom.
Your rom will get installed just fine. You just need to flash the kernel of your rom manually through fastboot using the command fastboot flash boot boot.img.
What exactly do you mean by telling "so i flashed it back"?
Did you relocked your bootloader with fastboot oem lock and you flashed an RUU?
You said you are just rooted. If my theory was right you probably unlocked your bootloader again by flashing the unlock.bin and a cwm recovery and then you had to use a (Superuser , SuperSU zip).
The first time you unlocked your device was you using the same computer with windows 8?
If yes this is a problem.Check your device manager for unrecognised devices. Can you see the device?
Check this out.You can also check this.
(You can try with win7 or a linux destribution instead.)
Are you still able to boot into bootloader (hboot) using (Power)+(Vol-) Buttons?
If you have enabled usb-debugging and a working adb shell despite you are in a bootloop you can try:
Code:
adb shell
su ------>(If you don't see # instead of $)
reboot oem-78 -------> To get in RUU mode
or
reboot bootloader -------->(To reboot into hboot)
* reboot recovery could bring you to recovery *
If you can get into hboot or RUU mode give the command fastboot getvar all and copy-paste what it prints.
I know it was possible to flash with S-on,
thats what i tried and it failed (manually flashed the boot.img resulted in a bootloop)
so i flashed back to the "stock" rom.
resulting in a "normal" rooted device
since i've replaced my recovery and got root access
it never has been oem locked again.(still isnt)
i cant get into my bootloader/ruu mode. nor start up.
when i plug it into my computer (windows 8) it makes the sound as it does when you connect a device.
but in device manager it shows nothing, not even a yellow ! as it normally would if it can recognize a device.

As you have not access to bootloader but your device is still seems to get connected i think you can only try HTC Unbricking Project. If the brickdetect.sh is not working you can try a different linux destribution.
