Wifi/Battery Drainage issues with CM11 Nightlies. - Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G

EDIT: The 27th Nightly fixed Wifi and battery issues.
Sorry if wrong area, I can't post in the development forum yet.
Specs: SGH-T699
OS: 4.4.2
Kernel: 3.4.77-cyanogenmod-g33b0384 [email protected] #1 Sat Jan. 25 22:19:49 PST 2014
CPU: ARMv7 Processor rev 4 (v71)
Problems: Wifi can't be turned off from pull down bar, but can be switched to off in settings. This does not stop wifi though. Airplane mode doesn't stop it either. Internet turns off even with the WiFi on until reboot. Overnight with a charged battery Wifi (while system is unplugged and the screen is off) takes up about 40% of battery. Stock can last 6-12 hours depending on use, while CM10.2 Stable can last 6-9 hours depending on use. This build lasts maybe 3-4 hours without use (when screen is off), and 1-2 hours with light use.

I had the same problem, but everything works fine in 27 nightly

Thanks for the heads up, I will try it now and repost here if there are other problems.

Thanks. Do you guys get anything near CM 10.2 in terms of battery life?

Yea on the 27th nightly (haven't tried the newest one) I got better performance from phone, and less power consumption on the battery (that is running music, browsing, and texting) I am at 6 hours with moderate usage and still 77 percent battery.

[Q] Problem with Battery Life

I bought this phone last week. And it worked fine for a few days but a couple of days ago I charged it to 99% before sleeping and then took it off the charger. When I woke up after 7 hours, it was at 51% battery. I restarted the phone and it worked fine. Then last night I again charged it to 99% and removed it from the charger before sleeping. When I woke up, it was at 70% after 4 hours of sleep.
A lot of the battery is being used by 'Android OS'.
Right now my battery is at 26% after being used for about 8 hours of average use.
31% battery usage is by Android OS. It has used CPU for 50m 16s.
Display has been kept on minimum brightness and used for 3h 14m and used 23% of the spent battery.
My problem is with the Android OS thing. What is using so much of the CPU? My friend's S2's Android OS had used the CPU only for 27m after 12 hours.
Maybe you could ask yourself, waht did you do just before the problem started.
Maybe:
- More syncing eg. email account?
- Power saving functions on/off?
Or any else strange behavior of android
I did install Whatsapp before the first time it happened. But removed it before second time.
Even hard reset my phone today.
Let's see what happens tomorrow morning.

Maybe u wanna include details like
1) wifi on/off periods
2) data on/off periods
3) overclocking
4) back ground processes/programs that are continuous running
5) Rom version
I dun have any data plans nor do i use wifi.
Calls less than 30mins in total. less than 50 SMS.
No games. No overclock.
My phone lasts more than 2 days !
As I said it was an average usage.
About 20 minutes of phone calls. Some messaging. No internet (wifi or date)
I am still running the stock firmware so no overclock.
I slept for about four and a half hours and the battery barely shifted from 100 to 99 tonight. But the 'Android OS' has used the CPU for 15 minutes in this duration.
Can somebody tell me the stats of the CPU usage by this process on their Galaxy R?
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA App
Battery usage
Some information:
- Overclocked at 1.35 Ghz (ardatdat's kernel)
- Wifi ALWAYS ON
- DATA ALWAYS ON (for whatsapp)
- Only 2G (GPRS/GSM mode)
- Average user (1 month about 15 min call and 100 SMS) but 500 +/- whatsapp
- No push mail but check it twice a day
-Automatic display brightness
Battery Usage:
1D 0h 54m
Android OS - 27% (52m 21s)
Display - 18%
Android System 13 %
Music 8 %
Mediaserver - 7 %
Internet - 6%
And quite many below 5 % like Market and Phone idle.
flick your 3G connection to 2G/GSM and make it as default in Setting->Wireless-> Mobile networks. You may notice a big difference.
BTW, I notice with ardatdat's new kernel my phone battery actually last longer than a fully stock 2.3.6 KK5. I think I m flashing back to ardatdat's
In the stats that you posted, you say that your battery time is 1d 54m. Is that on a single charge?
Have you noticed any battery backup improvement after rooting? I had thought of not rooting it till a custom ROM is available but I'll do it if it helps my battery life.

Yes, that's on a single charge. I haven't notice a big difference of battery life between the stock kernel and ardatdat's kernel unless the performance
1. There is a problem after wi-fi on/off on some 2.3.4 ROMs (at least russian one)
how to check the problem:
turn wi-fi on, turn wi-fi off (not sure if you should done establishing connection to interent)
then put phone on stand by
check if it consumed about 30% of battery after 8 hours of sleep (normally 2-4%)
2. Also there is kernel related problem
Since it upgraded to 2.6.36 there is issue - too much kworker/u processes started when device goes sleep and wakes up several times.
So, install root, advanced task kill or terminal emulator and kill those processes (as well as some other)
Turn off background synchronization, e-mails, social hubs and other internet related applications if not needed.
My current battery status: 63%, since 2 days 9 hours abd 14 mins of use
How can I check my Kernel?
Sorry for the noob question. New to android.

But don't bother... We should have all 2.6.36 kernel by default
Thanks.
Flashed ardatdat's kernel. Rooted now. Will be monitoring battery and freeze whatever bloatware puts too much stress on the battery.

I have the same wifi problem on swedish 2.3.4 rom, even after turning of wifi it draws a lot of power, only reboot helps.
If i reboot after using wifi, and dont start it again the battery last for several days with moderate use.
Does the root/kernel change correct that wifi issue?

Will get back to you with that, but currently it seems that either the answer is yes or the 'bug' hasn't hit yet cause even after switching wifi off, the battery backup went back to what it should be, though I haven't had a lot of standby time. Will take it off the charger before sleeping and get final results tomorrow.
Battery issue
Hi.
I got the same problem, on stock rom. Fully charged before going too sleep, 60% battery when i wake up in the morning. Standby mode, 3G and WiFi off. I searched the net and found somethig about the sd-card, dont remenber the site. I removed my sd card (16 GB class4 SanDisk micro-sd), (slot is free) and now it drains about 1% over night instead of 40%. Before it last 1 day with average use, now it last 4 days. I hope sw uppgrade will fix the problem.
Regards
Finnbeck
Running InfectedROM V1 on ardatdat's kernel. Amazing bettery life. Lasted 12 hours with about 2 hours of music, an hour of calls, an hour of internet browsing over wifi and frequent texting over the entire 12 hours.

longer battery life

I came into this all wrong. All I ever wanted was to increase my battery life through longer percentages of phone idle and standby and prolonging draining of my batter when in use since every few minuets I'm on the internet 1-2% drops....JUST USING THE INTERNET. I've heard stories of people who have had two days standby and increased battery when on certain roms such as sky-jellybean. I thought flashing a different rom would fix my battery life but I was wrong. After reading stickies and flashing countless roms, I'm still frustrated. If anyone has a solution, I would most appreciate it.

There is a whole battery life help thread. Screen time on is really what to look for. Problems with stand bye time are more an issue of wake locks. Those can be seen using better battery stats. I am currently at 25 hrs since charge with 1 hr screen time on and 53% battery using MIUI 12-7

Battery life... again

Hi just got my nexus 5 like a week ago.
First i was very exited and thrilled the device is amazing.
But ever since i got the device i cant go through a day of 8-10 hours with this 2300 mah battery.
I tried flashing franco kernel also bricked kernel, turned nfc of auto wifi detection google hotword and such, but no use.
Still cant go through 6 hours with screen on for like 30 minutes.
Please help me if you found a good way to save battery on our beloved nexus 5...
Currently not running stock, running dirty unicorn rom which drain like 2% per minute or two of screen on....

Don't know what's up but if you can't do 6 hrs with 30 min sot then you have a real problem somewhere. The only thing I turn off is NFC and hotword. Running Chaos kernel, stock rom. I had 16 hrs with 4hr 30 min sot the other day.
Dl better battery stats and figure out what's using your battery.
Could be a borked phone too. It happens.
Go back to the factory image and run that for a few days to see if your have a similar problem. You should be getting much better battery life. Also, use bbs to see where the battery is being used.

All of that will help but he shouldn't have to ANY of this to get better results than he's getting. Severely crippling your phone is not the answer. There's something else going on to get the results he's been getting.
Weird i get atleast 13 Hours with atleast 2 hours screen time
mostly on cellular and streaming pandora (LTE)
Im 100% stock btw location settings set to battery saver
Try Purity ROM and Franco Kernel. Also Better Battery Stats to see what's eating it. I get 1-2% loss in 8 hrs at night (wifi off, airplane mode), and up to 5 days if not using it much (always on). At least 24 hours under my normal use (even playing CandyCrush for an hour or two, checking mail, and tweaking apps). I get zero bars at home so I switch to airplane mode anytime I'm home. Turn off all syncing (I do have Calendar sync on), I manually sync contacts every week or two. I receive 30-40 emails per day (I use K9). Don't listen to music (since I'm at a PC most of the time and use it). I typically have wifi on at work and home, otherwise off not scanning. I have my Nexus 7 set up the same way, the Nexus 5 gets better life. I also don't use phone data much, I only make calls, and use it on wifi (I do have a Paygo plan at 10 cents/mb in case I need it)... PTEL $100/yr plan; been on it 2 months and still have $90 left (and was discounted to $78 to start with!) Very happy with battery on N5!

Tried stock with chaos kernel and with franco definitely better on franco but still terrible battery life.

Ain't showing anything unusual just screen processor and os.
To the OP: I'm getting great battery life from my Nex 5 on stock 4.4.2 and stock kernel - better, in fact, than my Galaxy S4. I would recommend always returning to a completely clean stock build and adjusting in small increments from there; this at least might help you to isolate the problem (or problems).
I'm on 3G most of the time, wifi at home; NFC, GPS and location turned off.
For Facebook I use the Lifehacker tip of deleting the appalling Facebook app and just running a bookmark to the mobile FB website in Chrome. So much better.
One thing that has massively improved my battery life is Lux Auto Brightness - paid version. This thing, when set up correctly, has improved by battery life by at least a third.
Good hunting. I sincerely hope your phone isn't borked.

High battery drain with mobile data

I just rooted and installed a custom ROM on my Evita One X earlier in the week. I had used wizzrah's excellent EZToolkit to get S-off, install a custom recovery and then a custom ROM. I had originally had a CM11 nightly installed, where I noticed high battery drain when having mobile data enabled. I went back to a CM10.2 stable build and have experienced the same. It's a really fast drain while mobile data is enabled, maybe a percent every few minutes. I have an AT&T LTE SIM installed and am in an HSPA+ area with LTE nearby. I keep noticing that the status bar icon keeps cycling between H, H+, and 3G. I had noticed the same with CM11 nightlies, but it's also happening on CM10.2. Is this normal? Do I need to flash a new radio? Something seems a bit unusual.
Baseband: 0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34L
Recovery: TWRP 2.6.3.0
ROM: CM 10.2.0-evita
Kernel: 3.4.11-g69442cc
Build number: cm_evita-userdebug 4.3.1 JLS361
Thanks.
If you've just flashed the ROM, have you done an initial charge cycle? This means flashing the ROM, letting the phone discharge to ~10%, charging it fully, allowing it to discharge to ~10% again, and charging it fully. After doing this you should also let the ROM "settle in" for a few days, the battery life should improve. Once you've done that and you feel that the battery life still isn't good enough come back here with some battery statistics and we can try to analyse what's going on.
Sent from my Evita
Let the battery fully drain last night and then gave the phone a full charge overnight. The phone is at 57% right now after being unplugged for 17 hours. I used very little mobile data (maybe for a few minutes); I was connected to WiFi most of the evening. I'll let it drain overnight and see what it's at in the morning. The weekends aren't a very good use-case for me because I'm not at work and am around WiFi most of the time. I'll see how it goes on Monday when I'm at work and using mobile data a decent part of the day.
If you're at 57% after 17 hours off charge, I'd say that's pretty normal drain. What kind of screen on time?
Sent from my Evita
Screen on is at 32%.
I meant the actual time the screen has been on for. If you go into Settings/Battery and then click Screen it'll show you.
Sent from my Evita
Ah, okay. Time on is 1 hour 6 minutes. I have the screen set to auto-brightness and timeout is 30 seconds.
I think that's about on par, it could be a little better but it's within the realm of being normal. Auto-brightness is a bit of a battery killer, it tends to make the screen brighter than it needs to be.
Sent from my Evita
Just an update after about a week. I've tried a few different radio images ([ATT 1.85 /1.82 (0.17.32.09.12_10.86.32.08L)]; [ATT 2.20 (0.19as.32.09.11_2_10.105.32.25)]; [HTC ATT 3.18 (0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34)]) and the battery results seems to be about the same regardless of what radio I have installed on CM 10.2 and CM 11 builds. The battery life drops about 1% an hour until I'm connected to mobile data and it drops a significant amount more after that, probably about a percent every few minutes. I will try some other ROMs and give my report here.

huge battery loss even in deep sleep

Wifi off, mobile data off, gps and location reporting is off, maps is signed out. This started to happen a few days ago which was like 40% after 8-10hrs of deep sleep now its dropped to 1-3% per hour. I used to have 1% drop every 8hrs of deep sleep.
Stock rom, franco r32 kernel, no oc.
Ive attached a history of my bbs and the latest 3-4hr test showing andriod battery stats.

Thats relatively normal. I get around a 1-2% drop per hour normally. If you really got 1% every 8 hours, please tell me how. If I unplug my phone at 8AM and not use it till 12PM, I usually have around 94%. I'm also running franco and I've under clocked to 1.5GHz.
Did you turn on sweep or tap to wake, by any chance? I gave up on those and my battery life was much improved.
1%/hr was the best I could do with dt2w, now I get much better battery using volume to wake.

I assure you 1% per hour is NOT normal on the settings I have. Ive been getting 1% drop per 8hrs ever since I got the device and only on maybe 2-3 rare instances I've gotten a huge drop but starting around the end of January I've been getting at least 1% drop per 8hrs.

What I'm telling you is what your getting is normal for the majority or users. The only thing that I can suggest is to factory reset.

If you really had no signal for that long, battery will drain really fast. By the looks of the screenshot, you have pretty good signal though.

I may perform a factory reset/flash back to stock and just have root for BBS after I do 1-2 battery charge calibrations.
I also dont know why its saying No or Unknown signal but signal is pretty good. Max bars the entire time.
I have sync on. Location set to high accuracy running Cataclysm with linaro version of franco kernel and leaving my wifi on i get 1-2 % drop overnight
