Hi guys,
A couple weeks ago my Xoom lost the ability to efficiently scan for wifi networks. It takes several minutes for any networks to show up at all, but once my saved network appears it will automatically connect (and stay connected) even though it will drop all found SSIDs many times there-after. Can anyone shed light on what could be causing this? I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue.
The attached screenshot from WiFi Analyzer illustrates exactly what is going on. My own network uses both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, the 5Ghz doesnt seem to drop at all (you can see it in the screenshot as well), maybe that's why I'm not losing internet connection when all of the others drop... Also it seems that often another particular channel 1 2.4Ghz network seems to stick around when all the others drop. Sometimes only half drop, then go, then the other half appears, then they all go... come back, etc. No other devices in the home are having any problems.
I am running the stock factory android (rooted), and have never flashed any other builds on this device, I will try EOS soon but I can't imagine what may have happened kernel/OS side to cause this behavior... any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I have been having ongoing similar issues with my MZ604 WiFi Xoom, but seemingly only at home with my Netgear router. My 2.4GHz connections randomly drop, but the 5GHz connection has been rock solid. The stability could be an issue elsewhere too, but I don't use wifi outside of my house much! It was these drops that ultimately lead me to experiment with custom ROMS.
Most of the custom ROMs and kernels have reduced or eliminated the issue for me (both EOS3, EOS4 and now OMNI). The ElementalX kernel seems to make things significantly better for the 2.4GHz connections. However, the v1.3 and v1.2 of the ElementalX kernel that I tried with the EOS3/4 ROMS introduced way too many sleep-of-death issues which were way worse than the wifi issues. With the EOS ROMs, I could not use the ElementalX kernel as the sleep-of-deaths were so bad. I had to resolve myself to kernel in the EOS ROMS and use the 5GHz connection at home (which has more deadspots )
The version of the ElementalX kernel in the Omni bigpart 4.4.2 ROMS, however, seems to reduce the 2.4GHz wifi drops substantially (but not completely eliminate) and fortunately does NOT have any of the sleep of death issues. So, ultimately I'm VERY happy with the OmniROMs even though the wifi drops are not completely gone - the OmniROMS have made my GUI much smoother/faster.
I should track when the wifi drops occur to see if I can see similar channel discrepancies. My brief observations to date seem to jive with what your saying. When the drops occur and I go into settings to try to reconnect, a lot of the wifi SSIDs have disappeared - after some time they reappear. It would make sense that it could be channel related.

Hey slow thanks for the reply man, this is all really good information for me, I haven't research too too much into what I want to put on my Xoom, most of my time here has been spent on a phone I just replaced. Glad to see I'm not alone on this issue, I haven't read of anyone else having the same issue and misery loves company. I've honestly yet to try my device somewhere other than my home as well, but I just cracked the screen on my Nexus 7 without even dropping it and now I'm back to using this work horse and I honestly missed it. Xoom is a rock and despite its age has far greater build quality and durability than the N7, that said I want my damn wifi going strong!
I used to be on a Linksys WRT-54G with DD-WRT firmware but it recently fried and we switched to my roommates Apple Airport Extreme (and now have 5Ghz in addition to the 2.4Ghz). Not knowing if the problem started occurring simultaneously with setting up the new router I tried killing the power to my router and to my surprise the wifi on the Xoom started working fine again, but only for about 20 seconds, and now it still looks exactly like the picture I attached above no matter what I do. So probably just a coincidence and no proven correlation there I suppose.
I'm gonna try the kernel and builds you mentioned and I'll report back with my results, thanks man. If anyone else is having similar issues please share.

If you go straight to the OmniROM bigpart 4.4.2, you will not need to install a separate kernel - a version of elementalX is built in.
If you try one of the EOS ROMs, you can stick with the stock kernel that they contain, or you can install the optional elementalX version that is compatible. I had to stick with the stock one because sleeps-of-death on the elementalX one.
HOWEVER, the OMNI ROM needs the BigPart partition before you can install it; the EOS ROMs do not. As such, the OMNIRom requires a few more steps to install if it is the first non-stock one you try.
I highly recommend the OMNIRom.
Thanks slow! So here's something wierd: I'm at my girlfriend's place right now and all networks are working just fine. I can connect to hers (AT&T U-verse, 2.4Ghz) without issue. Attached screen shot shows typical scanning behavior (the top red line is the network I'm connected to).
Now I'm back to thinking that something in or near my home is causing serious interference in the 2.4Ghz range. Two recent changes in my home include installation of a DirecTV dish (bringing the building's total to 3 dishes) and that damn Apple Airport Extreme router. I am going to kill all power in my breaker box when I get home to see if I can narrow the problem down to something I actually own vs interference from a neighbor. It still boggles my mind as to how this possible interference is only affecting my xoom and no other devices...

I'd be curious to hear if you discover anything interfering. I haven't looked further to see if it is only certain channels that drop out.
I should also comment further on my experience with custom ROMs and 2.4GHz wifi issues on my Xoom. Generally after installing a new ROM after a full wipe/factory reset, 2.4GHz wifi is good and stays good for 3-5 flashes of new nightlies of the given ROM. However, the 2.4GHz stability then starts to decline and I end up going back to my 5GHz question at home. The 2.4GHz stability is restored if I do a factory reset/full wipe before flashing a nightly. However, I don't bother doing a full wipe/factory reset unless I have to because I'm trying to a ROM from a new source. This is because I haven't bothered to get Titanium Backup going and having to download all my apps again, as a result of the full wipe, is a pain in the butt!

When I move into my room, my laptop gets 90%-100% signal strength from my Wifi, my phone however randomly looses signal completely and especially when I take up the phone to use it. It's very frustrating. Plus when I'm on 3G, it constantly switches from 3G to H too.
The 3g H switching is normal if you are on tmo us and running the eu roms and has been discussed quite a bit
not sure what you mean by losing signal, but i get diff bars diff places in my house. never lose the whole connection as in not being able to dl or browse web
did you run speed tests at these diff locations in house

I think you misunderstood his post. His primary problem is that the wifi on his phone doesn't come close to the signal strength his laptop has when in the same room.
The secondary problem was the 3g/4g switching.
OP -- I have no idea what to tell you.
no, i understood. just saying my phone wifi bars fluctuate even if my laptop has good signal. may just be the way they both display strength readings
i think op should run speed tests btw the two at same time. however both devices are splitting signal so may not be as good as only one running at a time
his speeds may be fine even though bars don't show it

I'm in Jamaica, no T-mobile. I'm not sure if I'm running an EU rom. My problem is that I loose connectivity to Wifi totally randomly in my room with even little motion. I mentioned my laptop for reference... it's like there's poor signal in my room. The phone'll just bit sitting on my bed, I hear an alert and pick up the phone to realize I've lost Wifi.
Speed is not the problem, I've been able to run a speed test to confirm I get the speed I'm supposed to get. Other times though, the speed test could not complete because I moved a little and lost connectivity.

Make sure that your SIM access cover is snapped in place.
It happened to me with the WiFi signal - The phone was losing signal, and had low signal 1 foot away from the router.
I 'pinched' the top-right corner of the access cover (thumb on the glass, index finger on the back cover) - I heard a 'click' and suddenly my WiFi was at full strength. I believe that the WiFi antenna is not connected unless it snaps together.
ok, not sure what to suggest. you could try turning airplane mode on and of and see if that helps
maybe router settings with the phone if you always had the issue
under settings/wifi/ tap on wifi then the 3 dot menu--Advanced. See if Keep Wi-Fi on during Sleep is Always. If not tap on it and change to Always
Also at bottom of Advanced menu is a DLNA setting, you could toggle that
barring that or someone else's ideas--maybe hardware and needs replaced
Try turning on Best Wifi Performance in Wifi, advanced settings.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U
Turning on best WiFi performance totally killed my battery life, but that may just be me.
If you're losing signal on one device but not another, I'd recommend changing the channel on your router. Interference on certain channels can cause weird issues with some devices. There are apps on the market that will show you which channels are congested in your area.

Hmmm... I'll try that. So far turning on DLNA and Best Performance hasn't made any difference. I'll try changing the channel when I get home later and post the results. I REALLY hope h/w is not the problem.. it's gonna be a hassle sending this back.
It might be worth gently cleaning the contacts exposed when you remove the SIM access panel. As District noted, good contact is necessary for wifi (and probably other features). Dust or a fingerprint may be problematic.
Anything to bear in mind when trying to clean it or adjust it? I'm really paranoid I'll mess it up.
make sure you use electrical cleaner
radio shack sells it, comes in spray can
if you haven't had sim card out or phone long, probably not issue. but, worth try
if you have another router, you can always try that
Nothing seems to work... I'm using channel 11 @ home which doesn't seem to be crowded. I have the same issue @ work with our router. I've been having this problem from I got the phone last week. This is after I initially removed the back cover to first insert my SIM.
I'm going to try and see if I can secure a cleaner... I tried blowing on it mean time. Also turned on DLNA and best wifi performance and all.
DLNA auto-IP setting worked for me.
Hi OP,
I had the exact same wifi issues on my One S. I tried the router at work, the router at home and my mates router with the same results.
Mine seems to work now, with no disconnections or manually connections. What seems to have worked for me -- Wifi - Advanced menu -- DLNA auto-IP setting - toggle on. Then restart, making sure the setting is still set after reboot. Seems to have fixed my wifi issues.
HTH.
Darren.
So last Friday I bought the note pro (wifi only). Overall I'm pretty happy with it, but I've got a few annoying problems.
My first problem is that the wifi connection keeps falling, even when the signal is strong. I know that the problem is the tablet and not the router, because my cell phone (huawei honor 2) doesn't have any problem connecting to the wifi.
My second problem is that sometimes the hardware buttons stop working. Whenever this happens, the two software buttons only react to the s pen, they don't react to my finger anymore. After a while, this problem passes, but it keeps returning...
And finally, my third problem is that sometimes the screen turns off without a reason. Screen time out is set to one minute and smart stay is turned off.
So my tablet is the p900, bought new last Friday, the software is official and up to date and the device is unrooted. I tried a factory reset to solve these problems, but it didn't help... I really don't know what to do now Can you please help me?
Problems 2 and 3 are most likely case relared. Chances are you're using a case that has a cover that flips and this cover may have magnets to assist in keeping it closed as well as turning on/off the screen. There's no way to reduce sensitivity to the magnets so far. Only thing that can be done is experiment with how you use the case. As for wifi problems there aren't too many options. I would experiment with channels first and then test with other hot spots before moving onto a factory reset.
Thank you! Well, I am using a case like that, so I'm hoping that's the problem. As for the wifi, how do I change the channels? I'm sorry, I'm a total noob

What you could do as a first shot is install wifi analyzer on the tablet and look to see how many other wireless networks are around. This would help you decide what channels to try on your router to see if you can improve things. You'd then log into the administration page of your router (from your PC) and make adjustments to the wifi network there.
If that doesn't help . . I'm not sure . . I've read in the past that some devices have issues with certain routers, not this tablet in particular but perhaps its an issue for your combination. I think I'd move to checking your tablet's performance on someone else's network and see how stable it is. If it's stable elsewhere then perhaps it's time for a new wireless router.
I have experienced the wifi issue once or twice. Turning wifi off and back on fixes it quickly. There may be some issue between the note pro and my router, but I am more inclined to say is a bug with the note pro. I have approx 12-15 devices on my network all the time and never experience this same issue on any of them, my router is the Asus ac66r (best buy version of the ac66u).
Either way it doesn't bother me much, but I would find your other issues little more annoying.

I have a OPO, Nexus 5, iPad and Galaxy S5 on the same WiFi network and when my OPO goes on idle, it will stay on the WiFi network but lose internet connection after some time whereas my other devices wont. It's not a matter of the settings because I have left WiFi to be awake at all times and even turned off WiFi battery optimization. I'm having a tough time figuring out why this happens. I have to turn wifi on and off to regain internet.

My only theory is because maybe my IP is not static and CM on OPO is not made to handle it? I don't get why my other devices work fine though. It only happens at home for myself as well

Could be software, does it happen in CM11 nightlies?
Or maybe is the config for the wlan HW, I think OPO has a Qualcomm solution for WiFi, I haven't experienced this in my Nexus 5 (Broadcom WLAN) or 7 2013 (Qualcomm older WLAN I think).

I seem to be having the same issue. it's weird. I've been trying to do initial upload from Titanium Backup to my Box account and it sucks...
network is a netgear adsl router with the wifi turned off, wired to a netgear router running dd-wrt, and I also have a repeater that's a d-link dir-615 running dd-wrt... yeah not the simplest setup I know
Would be useful to know if those experiencing the issue have altered screen timeout settings.
I was managing to upload ~30mb at a time, but now it seems to be much less - 1mb or less. I'm not sure if that's because I turned the screen timeout down to lowest (15s) to see what happened, but I've now turned it back up to 30 mb but the amount I can upload hasn't increased with it :/ Well - except for once where I did manage to upload 30mb again - which was directly after I turned off adaptive backlight. but then after that it was down to less than 1mb again.
Really scratching my head here.
There appears to be a similar thread over on the OPO forums - https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/wifi-slows-to-a-crawl.75850/ - I'm posting this in and watching both

Hi,
I have some WiFi issues. After a time no data can be send and received over wifi, but I'm still connected. I have to reconnect wifi and after this browsing the net is ok.
I have this on 3 different wifi Hotspots
Anyone also have this issues?
I have it too on LG G4. Anyone know how to fix it?
I have the same problem if i move to fast away (about 15m not out of range).
It could be my dual 2.4GHz/5GHz Network, but I'm too lazy to test it

I have it on both 2,4 and 5 GHz.
The last hour I can't connect to any SSID. And suddenly it works.
I Hope, that this is a software/firmware issue and they fix it in the next update that hopefully come soon.
Boy, am I glad you are making this thread to report on this issue! I am having the very same problem and it is driving me bonkers!
I am trying to review this device for my YouTube channel and this wifi issue is NOT helping. So far I have tried booting in safe mode, connecting to other wifi networks and reconfiguring my internet to no longer bridge together the 2.4&5 GHz bands.
What I am finding is that safemode has no effect but I can connect to my in-law's network just fine. When I changed my network settings I was able to show that it simply just doesn't want to fetch data from the 5GHz band. It works just fine on the 2.4GHz band but now I am not enjoying my potential wifi speeds. Sony really needs to fix this. The last thing I was going to try was doing a factory reset on the device but I don't think it will matter.
If you have wifi issues, try to change channel, etc- from 13 to 11, or try update wifi firmware.
June update is around the corner, highly likely next week. That one might include fixes also.
But as an established youtuber I would reach out to Sony directly to get confirmation on the issue and potential fix.
Also place to get direct answers would be talk.sonymobile.com
I cant say I've had any issues, but I'll keep an eye out. I've streamed music and radio stations for hours with no issues, and I'm guessing this problem would present itself there.
I can confirm I am also having this issue on more than one wifi connection.
I hope this is a software issue.
I can't explain, but the last 2 days no issues. WiFi works without problems on both 2,4 GHz and 5HGz.
Also the "bug" in battery stats with high WiFi time (more than 300 days!!) is gone.
I also have a wifi problem , but I have two access points linksys ea4500 and wrt1900ac on the first one it works perfectly on the second one stays connected but there is no internet, My issue specifically applies to wifi ac otherwise it works well... similar to my pervious lg g4
Same here. I can confirm that this can happen even on 2.4 or 5ghz wifi networks and that it's not a channel issue because I live in countryside with barely any other wifi networks.
But the problem is so much strange. For example, it will stop to work randomly when transfering data, watching youtube videos or such things but this never happens when using chromecast. I can pause, play, the videos, etc. with no issues. Like if it needed some heavy traffic to start having issues.

Same issue on my xz premium. Using both 2,4 and 5GHz at home. Having the issue also on all of my 3 WiFis at work.
WiFi is draining out my battery. 60% or more and around 30days of usage (having my device for a week now)
At the same WiFi at home are several devices connected without any issues. Xperia X compact, Z5 compact, ipad, Sony Soundbar. Sometimes my XZ Premium shows me "connected to WiFi without Internet"
This is the worst Xperia experience ever

I've also posted the same. And many others also. Let's see what happens
My WiFi says it's been running for 34 days+ but my connection on 2.4 has been good and solid from the start. I have no problem with there being an internet connection. I am fairly certain that the two issues are related in some way and some are having more problems than others.
I haven't had any problems, but then I did a complete reset of the phone a few days after I received it. When in doubt, that might be something you can try.
Turn off Smart cleaner.
That's the cause of WiFi disconnection and battery drain.
I have no wifi issues (2.4 only - no 5 for me) but it says that wifi has been running for 669 days. LOL
I sure hope Sony fixes these silly bugs.
Everything is smooth and perfect except Wifi.
I can found close wifi networks (Mobile hotspots created by other phones) but if I try to connect it just saves them, cannot connect to any wifi networks.
And the strength is too low. It is unable to find my room's wifi ...!!
So I am just totally unable to use wifi in my Pixel :/
Also I turn on Hotspot on my Pixel, it turns on but I cannot find it from other devices.
Also upgraded from 8.1.0 to 9.0 but still same issue.
Without Wifi its so miserable experience Any Solution?????
Yeah, same issue. It's a hardware thing. If you've dropped your phone either the cable came loose or the PCB board is off. I threw mine before (long story) but can't use wifi nor Bluetooth without being close to what I'm connected to.
I just don't feel like fixing it considering the pixel can break by repair. Plus, my 6p is my DD anyway
Dang, I gave my sister this phone and this problem just appeared. Time to look for a new phone for her.
Ok, being real for a second, this worked and I know it is a VERY BAD workaround but can help in a pinch.
I bought a refurb pixel on woot. Took a while to get it because it was sent to a friend's PO box and then brought to mexico, ergo no warranty.
Unboxed it and had this exact same issue; little to no signal on very few wifi hotspots and just "saving"
Seeing as this might be hardware related as @creep138 mentioned, I tried the following:
PRESS considerably hard on the point that the antenna connector should be.
After a couple of seconds of force and massaging, wifi came on and connected.
I KNOW this is a bad idea, I KNOW this might cause several issues on the long run, but if you have it sitting in a drawer doing nothing because of this issue, give it a try.
For reference this was done on a Verizon Black Pixel. The small one. and the point to apply pressure to is about half an inch below the camera and flash module.
Hope this helps

Everything is smooth and perfect except Wifi.
I can found close wifi networks (Mobile hotspots created by other phones) but if I try to connect it just saves them, cannot connect to any wifi networks.
And the strength is too low. It is unable to find my room's wifi ...!!
So I am just totally unable to use wifi in my Pixel :/
Also I turn on Hotspot on my Pixel, it turns on but I cannot find it from other devices.
Also upgraded from 8.1.0 to 9.0 but still same issue.
Without Wifi its so miserable experience Any Solution?????

Status update:
After doing what I have already described, that helped to connect to the wifi at my workplace. Nonetheless I didn't have suck luck with my home wifi.
After reading here and there, some users reported the device connecting to 5Ghz wifi no problem. My work is indeed 5Ghz and my home is 2.4
After unpacking and installing a 5Ghz capable router, the pixel connected no problem to it (after applying the aforementioned pressure)
Hope this helps
