Is there really that much difference between 4.1.2 and 4.4? - Galaxy Tab 7.7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using Stock 4.1.2 and except 5ghz wifi isn't working am pretty happy with it.
Do the later custom roms add enough performance enhancements to warrant the effort? For me the 'proper' dpi and tablet layout of stock is highly preferred so any other layout is really not desired.
Thanks.

84 views and not one reply......wow that would seem to suggest not a lot of difference.

Try it and see for yourself. +1 for sky high 4.1.2. It all depends what you want, I need hdmi out so Sammy Rom for me.
Good luck.

I realise I can try it but as posted in the original question there's no point trying it if there's not a lot of difference.....and at the moment there seems little, if any, beneficial difference.

Wow. I had good reasons to move away from the stock ROM back when I did it. But that was so long ago, I can't remember what they were specifically. I think a lot of people are in that same boat, which is why you aren't getting any responses here.
I would say that if you're happy with the stock ROM, then stick with it! The easiest upgrade you can do is to install an aftermarket launcher, like NovaLauncher or GoLauncher. You'll get a ton of features that will allow you to customize your home screen layout without having to mess with rooting and flashing ROMs and recoveries.

ok my skyrocket is at android version 2.3.6. kernal 2.6.35.11 and baseband version 1727ucla3. my question is should i keep it like this or root it and go with custom rom. i had a infuse and was running the aeon 1..4sl rom on it and it was ok. was just curious as to what roms people like on theyre skyrocket. nothing really wrong with mine now its just plain as hell ya know. just want a rom that is stable and not glitchy as hell.

I'm assuming you're running stock Gingerbread? I'm not sure how the stock AT&T ICS ROM was, but a lot of people that upgraded to the Rogers ICS ROM ran into performance issues (including myself). If you like your phone's configuration now, stick with it. If you think you're ready for something different, definitely check out some of the great ROMs around here.
For a while, I was on SkyICS. Great ROM, no issues whatsoever. I'm now running Liquid JB and, again, I haven't run into any issues with it. The devs here are awesome.
And I personally love the feeling of being free from bloatware. :good:
thank you so much ,big help man. and yes it is stock at&t . but i am gonna try and remember how to root it again. is odin still the way to root these things . i probably gonna have to read up a bit. but thx alot once again

I'm not an expert or anything so I'd advise you to read the sticky threads, even watch some tutorials on YouTube. Get confident before you flash. I don't flash very often so I get sweaty-palmed whenever I do.
I don't think it matters what ROM you have right now. Just install a custom recovery with ODIN and you can get flashing to whatever ROM you like in the Skyrocket development forum. Again, read and reread the thread.
Have fun!
i will man , reading now . but thx for all the input
You should incrementally step up from gb, to ics, to jb. Doesn't matter if you do stock ICS or custom, but I remember reading from someone much smarter than myself, that you had to be on ics b4 jumping on the jb bandwagon.
I must say though, if you decide to make the jump to custom, no matter what rom you choose you should have a good experience. We have some really good devs here and interest seems to really be ramping up on the skyrocket forums lately. In just the last month or so, we've had 3-4 major roms go official for skyrocket, and we have some great ports and variants of others.
If you like a stock experience with a bit of customization and good tweaks, check out embryo or sky ICS. Both are VERY solid roms. Feeling a bit adventurous but wanna stick to ics? Try out aokp milestone 6 or cm9 stable. Feeling downright ready for a crazy fun experience, try out any of the jb ROMs on here. I have probably tried them all, and they are pretty dang solid. I'm currently running slim bean and its great so far, but others have been fantastic as well. Orthus is a battery beast! I was consistently getting 17 hours with 5-6 hours of screen on time with that one. Aocp is fun and offers a ton of customization options. CM10 is a pretty safe bet as well. Hell, they are all good! Just Try them and you'll find one you like.
Happy flashing!

Have you tried stock ICS yet? If not, give it a try before you flash another rom. You just may like it.
Stock ICS on my S3
its always best to do some reading before you do some flashing and customizing yes there gonna be some " hiccups" but thats even with factory software. In my opinion root is always best because it give you the capability as the user to modifiy your phone to how you want it not how the company who sells u it wants it. and coming from GB to ICS was better then candy at the birthday party battery performance, better response was awesome and now since im on JB i even find myself out performing even some of the more recent Stock phones.
ultimately its ur decision but until you actually experience the difference we can only tell you on ours.
Roms that performed well for me:
GB=NexusMod
ICS= Embryo and SkyICS
JB= Slim Bean
go nuts
ok i rooted it today and am currently on the gb nexus mod, seems pretty cool . i have a couple of questions and i hope they are not ridulous sounding. first my 4g icon is replaced with h+. i am not in a 4g area anyway so its not really an issue unless it shouldnt have changed. the other thing is i dont know how to get to my external sd card files now. i used to access it from apps/files folder/external sd. but now i cant find that either. once again no biggie just had a apps restore on it .i can redownload the from play store but i would rather not.

i did the ota update to ICS then I installed CWM thru Odin and then I installed a custom rom. the skyrocket is one of the easiest phones to root, upgrade roms and go back to stock if needed. i like Orthus for JB.
i was looking into the jelly bean roms and to tell you the truth they look like there is alot more to do on a install, is there any out there that dont have like 5 different things to install. i know about wiping and all that but i am afraid i would leave something out that i need if it aint included on the rom. i know it sounds stupid but is there a jb rom thats a put on root of internal sd ,wipe a couple times and install, lol

[Q] Jellybean OTA for P3113?

Hello all,
I've seen lots of posts about the official jellybean OTA for P3113 and P3110, and even people saying that these roms work on their P3113 (while changing their product info...). Does anyone know if/when the official P3113 rom is coming out? I'm looking forward to flashing that with mobile Odin so I can keep root.

Official jelly bean for p3110 and p3100 is released for some regions and carrier.
So you can expect for everybody soon:thumbup:
What I find more frustrating than anything is that its been a week since the first official was released (in another region) and we (the P3113 owners) are not carrier reliant. Usually its the carrier that holds up the release of an OS, but since we don't have one, and the release from the 3110 works on our devices, why on earth is it taking so long?
It just doesn't make any sense to me.
I just installed the 3110 update that's around. The only deficiency I see is that the Model Number is became GT-P3110. I might not like some of the features but I think an official 4.1.1 for 3113 will be the same.
I am not concerned about warranty issues and that might be the major reason to wait. Also, IMHO, there's nothing worth not waiting for.
Why are you saying this? Is the JB so bad?
Do you have to be rooted to install the 3110 version of Jelly Bean on the 3113?
Im still on stock unrooted ICS..
No, as far as I know there is an Odin flashable, I do not have a link off hand though. If you are rooted, you can use Mobile Odin, and check the Everroot feature. It will keep your root in the next ROM (and if you want it can also re-install itself for you).

I went ahead and flashed via mobile odin. It did the standard upgrade stuff but it was really unstable. My tablet would boot up with a weird visual glitch and then freeze up every couple of minutes. I had to do a factory reset and now everything works. It defaulted to french, but I was able to set it to english on the first screen. Now the only issue is that my device says it is a p3110, but I guess that's not a big deal.

I know cm10 is out..but I don't think they are using the OTA as a backbone...therefore not having pure project butter, 60fps, triple buffering, etc..

Not that I know of. However touchwiz takes more of a back seat role in this rom and I've even replaced the Samsung keyboard with the stock 4.2 keyboard... and it is awesome. I like this rom the best out of what I've used on this tablet.

I keep telling you , but you fail to understand so please do some research about Android OS and firmware . There's no such thing as a pure AOSP ROM and Samsung certainly doesn't make one. Even a Nexus 7 requires device specific libraries and drivers. And removing Touchwiz won''t speed up your tablet.
Every Android ROM, CM10, Samsung, Nexus, etc. uses the Google AOSP API source code as its base, but that does nothing without a device specific Kernel, drivers, libs, etc. Understand?
The so called "Project Butter," is a series of changes incorporated into the Android kernel and API that enhances GUI performance and it is in all JB ROMs.
Here's a little tutorial to help you out.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...roject-butter-how-it-works-and-what-it-added/
These performance enhancements are in all JB ROMs , Samsung didn't leave it out or make it go away with touchwiz. However not all apps will take advantage of it yet. As apps are updated to JB compatibility they will perform better.

What's the best ROM/build for the P3113?

I haven't rooted mine yet and have 4.0.4 on it, so I'm itching to upgrade.
What do you guys think is the best ROM for the Tab 2 7"?
If you're looking to keep the IR, I'd recommend Tab2Lite. It's smooth, quick, and has blaster support, as it's based on Samsung's stock.
Yea, I'm looking to keep the IR blaster. Thx
Next question is, how the heck do I install this? Is there a step by step from root to ROM install?
You have to flash Cwm using ODIN, and then flash Tab2Lite. Thanks for giving my ROM a shot

YES!! I totally agree but here's my beef.
no ir blaster support
as far as i am aware, no swappable extsdcard with sdcard
no remote controls (thats a samsung thing internally)
the keyboard is sh1t unless there is a samsung keyboard apk somewhere out there
perhaps someone can answer these issues?
also, do you have a link for the latest CM10 release for the gt-p3113?

For the lastest CM10.1 nightly (came out today ), here. For the lastest CM10 nightly, here.
The IR blaster isn't working on any ROM, besides the stock-based ROMs. Personally, the keyboards on all the ROMs that I've tried are great, and I'm sure I can find a "samsung keyboard apk" somewhere on the interweb. For the swappable extsdcard, use this. It works quite well with my P3113

this is a HUGE delema of mine as well. I want the ability to customize everything and tweak the rom to my heart's desire but I dont want that freedom to come at the expense of useful hardware that would be rendered useless. isnt there some 3rd party app or something else like driver packs or something that has been leaked from samsung that we can reload after the CM upgrades that will deal with the IR not working????

Unfortunately the IR blaster requires some Java framework to allow the apps to interface to it. No developer has stepped up to add this to non-Samsung ROMs. Someone might be able to get some ideas for this from the Sony IR remote SDK. It also might be possible to port some of the framework when Samsung releases a JB ROM for the p6210.
When I get time, I might look into doing the Java framework, but I don;t see that free time coming soon, so I too will be sticking with Stock base ROMs.
The stock keyboard on CM10 isn;t great, but I use SwiftKey 3 anyway and the CM10 launcher is pretty poor compared to Apex or Nova.

Trying to Impress my Friend with Custom Rom

Hey Guys, I have a GS4 so please don't hate because I am asking questions and not trying for myself.
So my friend has a Blaze and he is looking to root his phone and flash a custom ROM. He is a borderline Android / Apple fan and I am trying to convince him to stick to Android.
So once I get him rooted I will be looking for a ROM/Kernel combo.. He needs everything to be working... Camera and everything else.
AOSP would be nice but from the ROM pages it looks like some of them have issues were he would flip out.
What is your best opinions on ROM/KERNEL combos to get his Blaze running smoother then stock without compromise?
Thanks!

Not trying to be rude, but you want to steer him away from an iPhone with a budget android phone that's 40% of the cost? If you really want him to like/love android and keep him away from the 'evil' fruit that grows on trees, he should spend the same amount of money on the phone and get a GS4 or One.
That statement aside, since you are 'stuck' with the Blaze (not necessarily a bad thing) you should go for this rom as it has the storage swap so there isn't any app/camera storage/other storage issues to run into. It's very stable and I ran it for about 3 weeks. Kernel is included.
Yeah you are 100% right.. he is stuck in a contract till November.
Thanks for the suggestion.
The most stable roms I have run are Beastmode's slim bean, and the latest cm10 nightly. Both on blue lightning kernel x2.
I've run both ParanoidAndroid and Liquidsmooth both with LightningZap 3.7 (though there was some inner folder work that had to be done) and both have been extremely stable for me. I also use Adrenalin injection and NOS_INJECTOR and my Blaze flys!

Battery life (if coupled with custom kernel)
Modifications -- some brilliant mods available -- Battery Icons, Themes, Menu settings etc
Cause you can :good:
-------
Using a custom Kernel with Stock Rooted and a few Xposed modules can be the same as a custom ROM most of the time though.. So give that a try first.
I have a lot better speed and battery life using Hyperdrive ROM with Beastmode Kernel. All the Touchwiz stuff (pen, etc.) still works, so yeah. Custom ROM > Samsung Bloatware.
I get between 11-14 hours with REALLY heavy use and full screen brightness and overclocked.

Just disable the stock apps/bloatware you don't use and you'll get better { performance/battery life } than any custom ROM.
The only reason to use a custom ROM (IMO) would be for additional (required) functionality like additional fie system support etc.
I have personally had absolutely no good reason for the use of a custom Rom in years !.
I also don't feel like using custom rom over stock, I did many experiments with note one but with note 3 I would stay with stock rom.
Bloat wares are not bothering me, battery life is also decent so in my opinion leaving some extra utilities stock is better
Depends on which custom rom you choose. Some rom are good, nice and stable but others don't.
Sometimes I use custom rom because I wanna remove useless apps installed by carriers. If you find it not a issue, keep the stock one.
So if your phone is rooted then u don't really need custom rom isn't it well correct me if I'm wrong as I'm new to that android thing lol

It's not a matter of "need" Hyperdrive has given me better battery life (even after freezing all the bloat) and has a lot of customization. You can do most of it through Xposed, but all the really valuable things are in it already. I never found one I thought was worth it until hyperdrive.
Try one of the ROMs that look interesting, if you like it keep using it. If not, that's what nandroid backups are for.

If u know how to tweaks it urself, do modification to what u need, no custom rom is needed once u r rooted. Basically, once u r rooted u can do all system changes, IF u know how to.
But, assuming u r new, based on ur post, just grab any custom tom u like nd try.
