So I just got back from the tmobile store, after sending in my g1 I bricked attempting to install the danger spl, claiming I had no idea what happened. Then I received a call from the person at the store that was helping me informing me that HTC would do a 'check' to see if it had been rooted, and fine me $400 if they discovered any unofficial roms on it. I told this man nothing.
Is this bs, or what?!
Either security has been upped in the recent past, and I'm going to have to pay $400, or he just tells that to everyone to scare them, I have no clue.
Any additional information would be appreciated very much.
TC,
No worries mate. It's BS, he's just looking to spook you, or he/she is a complete idiot of a rep. They can't fine you for it. You own the phone, not them (unless you're on some sort of a lease agreement contract I'm not aware of).
The most they'd do is just return the phone to you or something.
Cheers.

By not following directions, mostly.
Mine was taken by haykuro's death bringer.

This person called me back, and claims that HTC can and will check every phone sent in for unofficial roms. I'm not sure what gave me away, but he said if I rooted my phone, then do NOT send it in, because they will not replace it, and I will need to pay $400 for a new g1. He says he knows this from experience.
I'm rather frightened now, but would much rather trust you guys. So, encouragement pl0x?

TC,
This changes things. You see, when you said a 400 USD fine...that's BS....but...you should have the option to keep your bricked G1 (assuming they can't fix it). They can't keep it and not return it you. After that point, it's really your choice if you want to buy a new one or not.

Yes, but is there anyway they can tell it was rooted? Because if they can't, wouldn't they just replace it for free?

Yes, they can tell if you rooted it, or flashed it with an unofficial ROM. By doing that, you invalidated your warranty so if they really DO check it, they are pretty unlikely to repair it for free, hence the $400.

I wouldn't be surprised. You know how a damaged hard drive can be rendered inaccessible to the average joe? And how there are data-recovery companies that can somehow still get data back for you?
I'm pretty sure they can tell. If that's the case, like I've said before, it's really your call if you want to purchase a new phone or buy a second hand rooted one in the marketplace.

It's only bricked to you, not to them. It's more likely they'd just reflash the ROM and not bother to check, but what with Google's recent actions on trying to stop custom Android ROMs containing their closed source software, they MIGHT be pressuring HTC to check for custom ROMs as well...
It's your choice whether you want to take the chance or not. The worst that can happen is that they won't honour the warranty and either send the device back to you, or require you to pay for the repair.
Good luck for you and take easy.

LMFAO! That guy needs to get his ass kicked! You can turn your device in a custom ROM server and the only thing they can do is return it to you without repairing it. Nothing more. Ha! What ...... .... that rep must be. ........ ... ...... ..... haha!
If they catch you with a custom ROM, you would have to pay for the repair yourself, but that is normal. I never, NEVER, go to official repair shops. I just go to any repair centre and pay the price for the repair. Saves me a lot of nerves lol.

It's not difficult, but you can't do it from home because it requires dedicated hardware to connect directly to the phone's main board.
How do you think they flash these things in the first place, hmm? They sure as hell don't run the same type of flashing process that we do!

Three cheers for Samsung doing the right thing, about a month late.
A better choice would of been, a developer portal website, where we send you our IMEI, you mark our warranty as invalid should we brick our phone, and then give us a file to unlock our bootloader. I'd even pay a reasonable, less than $50 processing fee, for your effort.
Earlier on a conference call with Verizon and Samsung, the following happened.... ( For the Verizon and Samsung suits, the below is satire, if I got it right, it's a coincidence...)
Samsung: Verizon, we told you that you were going to piss off the tech influncers, they're going to badmouth the S3 on your network and people will consider other carriers. Your dumb ass move of locking the bootloader is now costing us support calls, as we try to explain your poor decision. The right thing to do, as we told you earlier was not to lock it.
Verizon: Heck no, we're not doing it. We don't want the warranty and support headaches, besides they're all just a bunch of hacker thieves who will destroy our network, break their phones and cry to us when they brick.
Samsung: Your dumb move is hurting our brand and your brand too. (Thinking: But you're too stupid to see it.) What if we made you a limited quantity of S3's of of the S3's on your network without locking the bootloader.did a developer phone. You could sell it to a limited customer base for a small up-charge and make everyone happy. This way you could limit the amount of so called "hacker thieves" while keeping the influncers happy and give us a consistent message where we don't have to lie.
Verizon: We're not selling it.
Samsung: You'd be able to make peace with the influencers, you know that group that is all excited about our products, and convinces their friends to get it on your network. They'd love you for it.
Verizon: We're too big to have a different process for the phone same phone. We'd have mass confusion everywhere, support, service, retail and we'd loose money on it.
Samsung: You need to do something about this. It's only going to get nastier as you deliver more phones. All the other carriers didn't lock, and you simply look stupid for doing it. Your confusing message sounds like paranoia mixed with PR lies. Nobody is believing you, and you make us look bad.
Verizon: We're big enough. We don't care. Let them whine, they'll quiet down in a while.
Samsung: We'll if you're not going to do anything at least let us do something. Let us build a model with an IMEI which you'll allow on your network, which doesn't have a locked bootloader. We'll sell it, support it, and handle warranty. We'll call it a developer phone.
Verizon: Grumble Grumble.... Fine. This issue is over and the last we'll talk about it. Goodbye. Click. Those Samsung guys need to grow a pair. <Laughter>
Samsung: What a bunch of morons in suits.
Well this is good for those who want to install roms and what not. It sucks for those who are trying to get the Sgs3 as an upgrade on Verizon.
this is awesome thanks! I woulda never though samsung would do this.
They also do not say if you are paying $599 to get the 16gb version or 32gb.
so its essentially the sprint version except it works on Verizon.

haha that would be hilarious and so awesome at the same time if the whole unlocked bootloader stock image could just be flashed in odin to bypass everything else. I was sayin the devs in charge of the $3k in donations to the bounty for unlocked bootloader should just offer that money to somebody at Verizon...like somebody should email one of the execs, not CEO, but a little lower, execs are ALWAYS lookin to make some extra bucks. Or at Samsung, I'm sure there's some software that can unlock that they possess. I came from the OG and have only this for like 4 days, and I'm extremely missing the freedom I had. It's like moving to North Korea or Cuba, naw more like North Korea

This is why Google releases Nexus devices. Technically most carrier devices aren't even meant for development unless noted. Development phones are provided with unlocked or unlockable bootloaders. They are under absolutely no obligation to provide you such feature with a non-development device. Quit your whining child.
Here is a possible solution...chat with an att rep, tell them that ur going abroad and need it unlocked..they will most likely provide it for you..unlock it and sell it to get about 500$ ish.. Buy a i9500 or something online like eBay and be set..

If someone pays $500-$600 for a phone, they should be able to do with it as they wish. AT&T should just warn the buyer that bricked phones will not be warrantied and leave the bootloader as it was. But they chose to push an OTA update, with a locked bootloader, to our phones. That was a real B***h move on their part.

No one said he couldn't unlock the bootloader - everything is crack-able. Just because it's locked doesn't mean he can't unlock it, in theory. He just needs the brains to do so.
That's like buying a new car and saying, "uggh wtf! The turbo should be running 30psi, not 10!!"... you pay some money to a tuner, and bam.. it's faster now. Same goes with a locked phone - there are devs out there that can do this - I'm sure for the right price they'll put in the work and unlock it.
Effing people expect life to be served on a silver platter to them and on top it, to be free. Grow up!
Oh look, another one of these threads...
Here is the reason why they do this.
They want government contracts. The government 'DoD' specifically is choosing Android over iOS because iOS more closed down than Android even with locked bootloaders. They have to show really good security. Making something this hard to break shows that security.

Please refrain from name calling.
Now, AT&T owns the bootloaders. They are not open source. They make Google implement them on our devices because they are Google's client/customer. Google has to abide by what their clients want or they will lose that client. Since the bootloaders are not open source, AT&T is not obligated by any means be it themselves or through Google to unlock or provide a way to unlock the bootloaders. Furthermore, AT&T can afford to lose the few customers that care about bootloaders being unlocked or unlockable because what they lose in public customer revenue, they will more than make up for in private government contracts. They know this and have compensated for it.
Should they handle it differently? Yes. But they will not lose much of anything if they keep it as is.

Hello to all!
Interested in the fact of rooter my Galaxy notes 3 but worried of losing the guarantee I have just contacted 2 PSM agencies of Lyon (France) to know if it would repair my note 3 if necessary in spite of the fact that the knox is 0x1.
The answer was without ambiguity (especially as he had just had this day an e-mail of Samsung their giving the instructions for the case of a root note 3)
Indeed PSM the possibility of putting back the knox in 0x0 and then of making the guarantee of play our telephone (method supplied by samsung he read me the whole e-mail but was not willing to tell me how he could make this miracle)
The only factor which it is necessary to take into account for this reset is the 65€ sum chargeable to the customer.
Sorry for my english
This would be great if its for all of Europe including the UK. I will ring them tomorrow and confirm. I honestly wouldn't mind rooting if it only cost me around £60 to reset it back.

I'm not disagreeing with your point of "Is there truth to the reset of KNOX" :good:
I just disagreed cheekily with the way you put it across, it's all good though
I'm trying to figure what are u guys talking about and if I'm not mistaken you're still wondering if Knox can be reset?
It was reported by quiet few users already that Samsung has the capability of resetting Knox and I thought it was already established Knox flag doesn't use e-fuse and can be reset. Now, I can't vouch for this particular service center, but if they can get tools from Samsung, they should be able to reset the flag. I also don't think this is worth the price unless the phone is already seriously broken and need to be send for service to Samsung center already known for refusing repairs with the flag tripped, or Knox software needs to be used. The chances for the phone breaking down before one yr warranty expires are not that huge and even if it breaks, it could go dead to the point flag can't be checked anyway. It would probably be better to get outside insurance, that would cover accidental damage and theft as well, if available, for not much more cash. And yeah, I still think/hope some way of resetting flag will be leaked.
I'm Just a french guy so post in english is not easy for me...
It's was just an information for people search solution for reset knox. Psm says that they could be with the approve of samsung and Psm is a great sav store. Thats all, i've nothing tout sell. There is no interest tout lie about this suggest so i just want to share this info.

Yes, the fuse is very likely still involved but it is probably not only the fuse.
Well, the only way knox is not hackable is if it a hardware fuse without any of the pins exposed externally. If the fuse has pins on the chip package, then fooling knox will be as easy as soldering a bridge between the two pins.
I already tripped my knox, will be a good thing if there is a fix for it, but I won't be holding by breath..
I don't know if I'm posting this in the correct forum or even if it's allowed(didn't read thoroughly through the rules for this) but considering what it's about...
As you all know by now or will soon find out, GeTex has brought to us a way to unlock our VZW S5 locked bootloader with the help of other highly recognized Dev's. The device's able to use at this time are the ones with the Samsung eMMC 15 chip. The Toshiba eMMC 11 chip has yet to be unlocked. As and if you may have read that to Getex's unfortunate findings that he/she has 2 of the 11 chips and then purchased another one to find out that it's also an 11 chip.
What I'd like to get going and maybe someone help arrange/coordinate is purchasing GeTex a S5 with the eMMC 15 chip. Since GeTex found this out he/she never gave up on finishing what was started. So with all of this said and for all of you enjoying what was brought onto this VZW S5 community, how about giving GeTex a nice and deserved THANKS by helping getting a S5 with an eMMC 15 chip.
The question is, how do we go about it? Do we setup a fund/donation "pot" to get the S5 needed? Please chime in as to making this work as to i believe it's something we can do TOGETHER as a Community. THANK YOU GeTex and to Beaups for the code, JrKruse and others that I cannot think of off hand for making this happen as well. A :good:
Thankyou so much for thinking of me! I'm not sure if it's against the rules but I'm sure a mod will chime if needed! I am using my Primary S5 right now and would love a 15 to go to custom roms. I hope everyone enjoys the bootloader unlock
for those that are looking, it's in the development section
If anyone knows how i can go about checking the eMMC on the S5 from a store that would be great. I know the phones are bone stock and that they don’t have service on them. Thanks in advance

I've done Hot Air SMD rework before on Note 3, you just have to be super careful not to burn the pads on the PCB and take your time to loosen and remove the epoxy/adhesive. Take it really slow. The hard part is lining up the balls when your ready to solder it back on.
I plan on going to a few stores today after work and this weekend to aquire a S5 with an eMMC 15 chip. Along with a sale price. If GeTex would rather get the MB's rather than an actual device let me know. I thought it would be a good gesture of the community to look/help getting a device. I'm not downing the free MB's that Mastertech has offered, which is awesome by the way, but she said that she is unable to PM him. Also would he know if they are the Samsung eMMC 15 chip's or not? Just would hate it if and when she swaps out they don't work. If anyone else has any recommendations or ideas, please feel free to add to this thread.

A :good:

GeTex compiled, and explained how to use Beaups tool. Which is completely cool under the license. But Beaups specifically requested all donations received for any thing including by his work go to him.
If you are specifically donating him/her one, thank you! That's quite kind of you. Or if someone else is donating one, same. But I don't think a group pay effort is fair with what Beaups asked.
EDIT: Don't take this wrong. I appreciate GeTex's work, but, Beaups asked all donations go to him.

I am unable to PM you! I attempted to but the option doesn't exist. PM me first?
I have a very mid sized BGA rework station BUT my heater is burned out still, SO i'd have to replace it
Could I perform the swap with a smaller hot air smd station?

Possible, but very hard to pull off. Ryan's tips were very accurate.

I had saw the post about "bounties" either going to 'Make-A-Wish' Foundation or to ryanbg (getting married). Didn't think this would be too much of a conflict due to the circumstances. Sorry about trying to help a fellow user for her work. Don't want to be "stepping" on anyone's toes so to speak or anything outside of the XDA policy.

No no! You misunderstand. A group fund or bounty should go to what Beaups said it should.
If any users are willing to donate a board, eMMC, etc. to GeTex, that's more than cool.
Just, try to follow Beaups outline for where the money should go.
You aren't breaking any XDA rule though.

beaups did ask to send money to both of those locations(i added it to my op day one) but people also can chose to send money wherever they please >.> I didn't ask them to, nor do i demand it. Thats the idea behind donating x.x If people want to do this as a kind gesture then.... idk....
Seriously though guys, ryanbg
Went today and no luck going to 2 more places tomorrow to check out what they have. On the curious note, there's been 538 views here and only 31 Thanks to GeTex for bringing the unlocked bootloader to "life", with one person graciously offering 2 MB's....Mastertech, were you able to contact GeTex? She said that she's unable to PM you and I was just checking up on if y'all have or not. Thank you Mastertech for your kindly proposal!
Everything is all good, boards should be on the way
My goal here might be to try reviving the dead board first. Will update on arrival

I'm starting to think that only "original" S5s have the Samsung eMMC.
I doubt you'll find one in a store now.

I bought both of mine, white and black, in store 2 months after release. They were both able to be unlocked.
One was manufactured in July of 2014 (2014.07.12) and the other in August of 2014 (2014.08.06).
I think the manufacture date has something to do with which chip they use.
I told her (GeTex) that I'd trade her one of mine if/when they aren't daily drivers but who knows when that'll be..
I planned on getting a phone off the new Nexus line this fall but now that our bootloaders are unlocked and the S5 hardware is badass, unless one of the new Nexus devices compares, I doubt I'll upgrade.
Anyways, I'd start asking people on ebay/swappa if they'd be willing to install the "emmc brickbug" app to check the CID..
Most people on ebay are dicks and wont be willing to do it but you might find a few that will.
If you do find a 15 from someone on ebay/swappa, be sure to post here because I'll throw in money to get her a 15.

Thank you for the helpful information and your proposal. I'll definitely keep all informed and post any of my findings. To others who may be reading this, if you could do the same if you have any findings.
