[Q] [CM 10.2] Why does this version allow me to mount USB with phone locked? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Seems like a security flaw. Anyone can pick up my phone, plug it into a USB port and copy files within seconds. Normally, you'd have to at least have to reboot into recovery, which requires a forced reboot and knowing the proper keys to do that and to enter recovery. As it stands now, even a child could plug in my phone and access the entire SD card.
It's also annoying that if I plug in the phone to my PC to charge while I'm listening to music on it, I don't get the lock screen where I have music controls. I instead get the USB mounting screen. I just have to press the Home key to show the lock screen, but it's been bugging me.
Is there any way to disable this? It wasn't this way in CM 10.1.

Go back to an earlier version of Android, or don't lose your phone.

Your useless answer is unappreciated. I asked two simple questions and you answered neither.

The fact is you can't disable it. The answers I gave are perfectly valid if you don't want want the ability to mount the sd card via the lockscreen. If you're allowing your phone to get into a position where someone can access it like that then what I'm saying is maybe you need to reassess the level of personal security in regards to the device.

>The fact is you can't disable it.
Now that is an appropriate answer. Thank you.
The main topic question was "why?" Why this change in behavior? What's the philosophy behind it?

I'm sorry but I don't know why they changed it like that.
Sent from my Evita

I remember CM9 behaving like this in certain versions, but then it went away, and I never had it in any CM10 versions until now. It's like the developers can't decide how they want it, or it's some sort of mistake or bug.

It isn't the fault of developers here, I believe you can thank Google for that feature.

If you want it to not be like that, go and decompile some file and change the permissions.
Speaking of Google, I'm excited for the new Selinux policy from the NSA researcher. It'll be fun to see ChainFire at it

[Q] Help with a problem

My daughters Huawei Ideos U8150 has a cracked screen, you can not unlock the screen because the crack is right in the middle of where you slide the unlocker.
So the phone although can be used to receive calls, can not be accessed via the screen.
She has also managed to somehow set it to not unlock the screen when receiving a call(no idea how she did this).
So I have 0 access to the phone.
I have a program Lock_2.0.apk but can not just install it with ADB because her phone of course is NOT in development mode.
In the custom AmonRA recovery, I can enable USB, and ADB will see the phone as "recovery".
But if I try to install the app that turns off the screen unloocker it says "/sbin/sh: pm: not found".
All I need to do is install that app to remove the screen locker and the phone is useable again.
Any idea how to get it into development mode with adb? Or some other way?
Thanks.
Sorry to dissapoint you, I don't know. But I want to know how's the the phone? I want one to give it to a friend, is it good?
You can buy a used phone on ebay, i saw them cheap.

Screen is broken has a crack but its still useable im not buying her another one she has to learn to take care of her stuff.
But this problem is ridiculous its the screen lock that's causing the problem because you can still use the phone if it wasn't for screen lock.
There must be some way to install the no lock program.
Well, you can try to install a VNC server and access it via WiFi. Or you can try to make a factory reset... it will reset the lockscreen
And if you still interested:

Wifi is not turned on either
The only thing I have to do is install that un lock program and it will be fine but this is easier said than done.
Well, you can try, in recovery, to push the no lock apk to the folder /system/app and reboot... may be you can be lucky enough

Dude. Don't bring dead threads back to life. This hasn't had any posting in a year - how the hell do people even find these threads to resurrect? Reported.

Generally we very much appreciate users helping each other with questions, but not when the thread hasn't had any activity in around a year. That means the person's question has either long since been answered, or they've moved on to another device, etc, etc. Thread closed.

Dead backlight?

So I'm wondering if the backlight might be dead on my TF101. I used my tablet over the weekend fine, but I turned it on this AM and can't see anything. Depending on the angle I just just make out the really white icons or sections of the screen. It looks like I don't have USB debugging enabled because I can't see it in adb devices. I can see it as an MTP device and browse the internal and SD storage.
I'm looking for suggestions to try to max out the brightness or test this device to see if it truly is the backlight or another issue.
ok, I've got adb working so I can communicate with the tablet, any suggestions on hardware diagnostics or how to increase the brightness level?
go here and follow the instructions, its going to allow you to control your android device from your computer thru adb. basically its going to show your tablet screen on the pc, that way you try to see if turning up the brightness works

[MOD] NFC for Verizon GS3! NFC Enabled While Screen Off / Locked

***UPDATE***
I upgraded to ParanoidAndroid and had to use a different apk. I don't know who made this one (i downloaded like 10 from xda and tried about 4 before it started working), but here's the winner:
techneesh.com/paranoidandroidnfcscreenoff.apk
*****************
Hey guys,
I searched for hours but could only find reports of people *NOT* getting this to work on the Verizon GS3 (hence the name of the thread).
I tried hacking my stock Nfc.apk using dex2jar & modding the smali files (after looking up the appropriate values to change using decompiled dex2jar classes.dex's nfcservice.java), but after much frustration decided to just go ahead and try the existing versions out there.
By the way, if anyone is looking for how to do this (decompiling/modding/recompiling an apk) with 4.0.4 (and getting the 'bad magic number with smali/baksmali), refer to the comment on May 8th in this thread.
I'm pleased to report that mayhemer's AT&T version (for the SGS-I747) works for us Verizon folks!
You can grab it on his thread here.
I've also uploaded it to my server. Here's a direct link:
techneesh.com/Nfc.apk
I posted this in the Development section because I would really like to encourage devs to work on modding Nfc functionality further. Also, this is a more advanced mod for a system app.
Google Wallet did not throw errors with this .apk (as it did with others), although I have not tested it yet.
NFC reads trigger the nfc tag's function and the alarm/beep, but do not turn on or unlock the screen (while it is off).
Also, I just got a whole bunch of NFC tags in and plan to make some cool products for them... if you have any ideas let me know on my 3D-printing-on-demand-for-xda-samsung-gs3-folks thread.
Note- I am on Bean's Custom Stock R3.1 07/28 (I know, I need to upgrade)
4.0.4, SCH-I535, Baseband I535VRLF2, Kernel 3.0.38imoseyon+, Hardware I535.10
Instructions for apk:
1. Get apk onto your phone
2. Stop NFC (or else your phone will start lagging // freezing after the next step)
3. Copy the apk to /system/app/ with a root explorer and overwrite the existing Nfc.apk (you should make a backup first)
4. Change permissions to match other system apks (rw-r--r--)
5. Reboot & re-enable nfc. Profit. Share your uses.
For zip you should be able to just flash in cwm.

oh man, don't get me started!
think about it - you get to your desk and want to tether / turn on music / silence phone. just tap it on the nfc sticker on your desk. done.
you get into your car and want to enable gps / turn on music / navigate somewhere. tap your phone to the nfc sticker. done.
i have a lockscreen for security and even though it only takes a second to open it still adds up over the course of the day. the ability to quickly do (any) task on your phone without unlocking it or even pressing a button is huge.
for example, I canceled home internet last year when I got LTE but this means I have to turn on tethering every time i sit down at my PC. using a tasker nfc-activated command I can just touch my phone to my desk and it's on. time saving and just fun.
or maybe you are in a meeting and miss a call and want to call them back - have a pre-programmed nfc sticker that will command your phone to set an alarm for (e.g.) 1 hour. tap your phone to it without fiddling /unlocking/interrupting your meeting further.
what really made me think of this is while I was looking for something behind a wardrobe and wanted to turn on my LED flashlight on my phone. how cool would it be to have an nfc sticker (on your keychain? on a sliding mechanism on a custom techneesh.com case on your phone?) that could basically act as a 4th hard button to do a custom function (in this case, turn on the LED flashlight without 1. turning on screen 2. unlocking 3. going to home screen 4. finding LED flashlight app and opening)
and yes, this is for real
I'm trying to get this to work on CleanROM 2.5, with the G7 baseband. I followed the steps correctly, but it doesn't to anything different than the stock NFC
I can still read my tags when screen on and unlocked, but i get no response with the screen off or on and locked.
Triskite, did you modify the .apk from the linked At&t SGSIII thread at all? If not, would it be safe to try the other apk's listed there?
Thanks!

I flashed the nfcmodI747_lockscreen.zip flashable from CWM and it works like a charm!
Once i did this, i wanted to see if the screen off nfcmodI747_screenoff.zip works, and it sure does (again, flashed via CWM)!
Don't know if it matters, but i did not disable NFC from settings before i flashed them via CWM.
Thanks again!
Just saying this is as of the moment the most unsafe mod someone can implant or put a nfc tag somewhere to run malicious code on your device. While I do not condone hacking of any sort, I know the possibilties of what these hacks can do from different forums (not naming any).
TLR, caution with this one guys. Especially if you're using wallet using my guide......
Ok...what are these tags you're talking about? I've never ran across NFC tags in "the wild"...do you buy them and then tell your phone what to do when it reads a certain tag?

Yea, I understand the risks and all.
I agree that it is a major security vulnerability for someone that wishes to highly protect their information.
I just wanted to try it for a proof-of-concept kind of thing.
Honestly its pretty quick to flash these via Cwm. I went back to stock Nfc.apk for parties/bars this weekend (Too many people close to me for security comfort), then today I flashed the lock screen version for my school week.
It would be really cool if it were possible to toggle this.

Can somebody post the stock nfc apk file(s)? I guess they are needed to take the OTA update after mucking with Wallet, and i didn't save them.
I just tried the nfcmodI747_screenoff.zip with the latest paranoid android (2.16) and it does not work. The NFC settings disappear entirely.

I have flashed synergy (ICS), jellywiz and now cleanrom 2.5. I don't know if they've modified anything in the NFC.apk, but this is what I have.
If you wanna guarantee its ok, you can pull it from the stock ROM.

True, but this involves active running processes like GPS which can drain your battery. From my experience, NFC has no noticeable extra drain, not even the screen off modified version. Not to mention how easy it is to use the NFC programming apps versus Tasker, IMO.

[Q] Hateful GoogleNow won't stay turned off

Hi,
I'm running JB 4.2.
I hate Google Now with a passion, and have been trying to disable it - permanently. I simply want a search bar that returns results in Firefox.I never want to be pestered by GoogleNow's notices, or, especially, its attempts to upsell itself.
I've read dozens of posts here in the forums, and *think* I've tried most advice (uninstalling updates, toggling off, etc).
Atm, in my Google Search settings, Google Now *IS* toggled to off.
But, every time I click on the search/quicksearch widget bar to enter something, GoogleNow pops up forcing me to Click "Next" several times, then gives me only two options "Later" or "I'm in".
I want to effectively implement a "Never" option.
How do I make GoogleNow go away, and stay away?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong due to I have not rooted my s4 as of yet but rooting your phone is the only possible way that I can think of and this is not confirmed but know just about everything can be removed via a rooted phone. ....
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app

I can make any changes that need to be made.
The problem is finding the right change that works AND sticks.
Try:

And what, SPECIFICALLY, should be done with ZDbox to permanently disable GoogleNow?

Honor 6x BLN-24-cannot press "allow" for any app.

When an app asks for permissions, Allow and Deny options show up (regardless if for storage, or camera, etc.) but the allow button does not work. Deny works fine. So far i have unlocked the bootloader via Huawei website method (i guess you call that official) and flashed twrp. I have not rooted the phone yet (getting to that, but one problem at a time) and this is the first one.
I also saw someone else ask, but with now answer. Is there a way to get rid of the splash scren about the phone being unlocked and not trustable, press power button again to boot?
Do you have an special theme activated? Use the standard theme and try again
My 1st question to you is... when the window prompts, do you flag the option "don't ask to me again" or not? Because if yes, the only option avalaible becomes the "deny" one. This mechanism confused me too some time ago, when i wasn't understanding why it was blacked out; Android takes your flag as an "what a bore, just shut up and go **** ya' self leavin' me alone" answer, so it automatically deactivate the possibility to let it pass even one more time. If you didn't checked the flag, i have another question for you. Did you maybe recently made an update OTA, or with an update package found online? If the 2nd answer is what u've done, do a check for being sure that you have updated the phone with the correct package model. (BLN-21, BLN-22, ecc.) If neither this is your case, begin to tell us something more 'bout your phone configuration and start to think to backup your data and do a factory reset for eliminate this weird issue.
For the question of yours about the Nag screen (the splash one, for being clear) at the moment there is nothing that we can do to avoid it to pop out; just skip it pressing immediately the power button, is the best advice that i can do so far
I'll attempt to answer all these at once since I just got home from work. I wouldn't believe rooting the phone would cause this issue, but the problem happened before i unlocked the bootloader so I think that rules that out. I do not use a special theme, but I do use squarehome launcher for my phone, not the standard android launcher. Problem there is, the problem occurs with either launcher being active. And theme wise, I have a 3-d live aquarium for a background (which if turned off and just a static wallpaper, the same behavior occurs). As far as the phone update goes, it was an OTA update from 6 to 7, so still using stock, nothing sideloaded or flashed (yet). My data is all backed up via My backup pro, and doing a full backup with TWRP onto OTG is not a problem. I prefer not throwing in the towel, since setting up squarehome perfectly is a pain in the ass, but if it has to happen, it is better than manually setting permissions for every app that needs them. Not sure what a screenshot would do, think of any app asking for permission to use phone storage, both the allow button and the deny button visible (in white, nothing grey) and allow doesn't respond where deny responds fine. and then i have to go in manually and grant the permission after the fact. I suppose I could just root my phone and give that a whirl, seems some bloatware needs to be removed anyway, and i have the SU sitting on my hard drive already. Thanx for the responses, and let me know what you may have come up with before I just factory reset it which as mentioned, I am dreading doing.

Well, I didn't think that would be the answer, but you, sir were right. I rooted my phone and it seemed to have fixed the problem. I don't believe I made any other change whatsoever. Thank you very much. Glad I tried it anyway as you suggested even though I didn't think it would be the answer. I am not above saying thank you, and I was wrong. Kudos. Maybe this will help someone else. Good thing is, I planned on rooting it anyway, and you just kicked me in the pants to do it.
Rooted but allow button is still not activated
Hello guys,
I wanted to activate app twin so I rooted my phone BLN-L21 android 7.0
Allow button still deactivated.
Also the boot screen that asks to press power button still exist.
I noticed that if I activate whatsapp twin it won't work simultaneously .
I.e : when you open whatsapp you get all missed calles & messeges.
Also I was able to download themes through themes app ,but now it just views the local themes.
Note: superSu is installed.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you
Well, I think this is not related to OP (or at least partially), but when unlocking bootloader after setting up SD card as the default storage can break some things, like default themes.
Try to restore your firmware, and then unlock the bootloader.
If successful, you can now set up SD card as default storage.
