Yes this is a basic one. Do you mean all data off, or merely auto-sync off?
Start a new profile, with the context being an app, and choose market from the list.
Then when asked, choose new task, and select 'net' then choose mobile data =on, or wifi =on, or autosync = on, or all 3 depending on what you are after. Then create the profile.
With the new profile now in your list, touch the right-hand side, and select "add exit task" then basically do the opposite of whatever you turned on in the first step.
Now when market is opened, your data will turn on, and when you exit the market, it'll turn off.
If you get stuck I can create that profile and export it and post here for you to download and import.

Ah. Apologies it appears that Tasker is very very broken right now.
I've been beta testing ROMs like mad recently, and have not put Tasker back on for a while. I have just tried putting it back on, and none of the App related contexts are working. I have e-mailed Tasker support to see why. I'll let you know what the response is. In the mean time, I have tested a work-around which does work. We can use a Tasker widget. Those still work!
1. Open Tasker, and select the lightning icon to create a new Task (we are not creating a profile here). Name it "Market".
2. Create the following task:
Net> Mobile Data = On
Net> Wifi = On
Tasker> Wait = 2 seconds
App> Load App> Market
3. Before hitting the tick button to save it, select an icon for the widget. Do this by pressing the button that looks like a small multi-coloured chess board. Select 'App Icon' and scroll down to the Market and select it.
4. Now save the Task.
5. Back out of Tasker and back to your home page.
6. Long-press in an appropriate space to add a widget like you normally would. Scroll down the widget list and select 'Task'. It'll have the Tasker icon by it.
7. Select the 'Market' task you just created. It'll give you a quick preview of the settings of the Task. Hit the Tick button.
8. Now your widget is set, and it'll look very similar to the Market shortcut icon. Press this, and Tasker will turn your data on, wait 2 seconds (for a connection to be made) then open the Market.
9. If 2 seconds is not long enough, edit the Task to bump the wait up to 3 or 4 seconds. 2 seconds worked for me.
The only downside to this over a Profile, is that you'll have to manually turn the data back off afterwards. You could either use the HTC widgets, or create another widget using the above steps and just set it to turn off 3G and wifi in one go when pressed. Call it "Data Off" or something.
Hope this helps for now. I'm keen to see why Tasker seems to have gone wrong as I'm one of it's biggest advocates. I'll be sure to post back here when I've gotten to the bottom of it.
Done it. but I couldn't try it right now no Wifi Im outside the house lol will try this when i get home.
Hope tasker will get fixed soon I tried your first Instruction and I think I followed it correctly.
Thanks a lot
One more thing when I add the Widget an Error appears "Warning: couldn't save data, making backup on SD" is this Ok?

Yeah that's fine.
And I've had progress with Tasker not working on my phone. I changed the kernel I was using and it started working again! MDJ's Unity V4 Kernel works perfectly with Tasker.
What are you running? Are you s-off/rooted? I rooted my phone almost straight out of the box, so have never run Tasker on a stock kernel.
Thank you for your post as it has helped highlight something that I had missed in testing! Ironically I thought putting Tasker on a beta ROM would interfere with the bug finding process. We live and learn!

oh it says [email protected] #2.. so I think we have the same Kernel? I'm not well aware of this stuffs or maybe I just need a working Wifi Connection still outside Ill be home in 5hrs..
Ah. It was putting unity v4 back on that fixed it. Perhaps try reflashing it.

I believe you've all misunderstood the OP. (or maybe I misunderstood him)
Tasker doesn't support turning OFF the Background Data setting under the Account & Sync option.
I am looking for an app that could turn this OFF and ON as well.. Don't know if AutomateIt supports it.

Yes unfortunately tasker can't yet turn this off, but with auto-sync turned off (which it can do) then battery drain and data usage are minimal. I don't think turning off both makes for a greater advantage.

Google Now is keeping our devices awake far more than it should. Worse, it disguises itself as "maps" in battery usage. There are a few methods you can use to curb this til it's officially fixed. Like with all things, YMMV.
Method 1: Downgrade to an older version of Google Now
It seems that in the 10/29 update of Google Now (Google Search), Google found it necessary to remove an essential option to fix the GNow wakelock. This option is called "Location & Google search" and used to be located in Accounts, Google, Search. Interestingly, if you use MIUI 4 you can find this option in Location Settings regardless of which Google Now version you have installed. Anyway, you can get this option BACK if you install the google search I have attached to this thread. You'll lose some of Google Now's newer functions using this method.
- First make sure you clear Google Search's data in Settings, Apps. This prevents force closes.
- Using a root enabled file explorer (such as root explorer) I first copy the downgrade Google Search (It's actually labelled QuickSearchBox.apk)
- Then navigate to system/apps and mount the system partition as Re-Writable
- Paste the copied Google Search, overwriting when prompted
- Long-press the newly pasted Google Search and fix the permissions as such:
Read - Owner, Group, Others
Write - Owner
(The rest is unchecked)
- Reboot the device then do the following:
1. Go into settings
2. Under Accounts, select Google
3. Select Search
4. Uncheck "Location & Google search"
It's fixed! But you lost some GNow functionality. Let's try something else maybe?
Method 2: Disabling location reporting
This is a method that works for me, but others have told me it doesn't work for them. It will disable Latitude related functions as well so that's something to consider if you use those.
- Launch Maps
- Go into settings
- Uncheck "Report from this device"
- Change location reporting to "Do not update location"
Try it out!
Method 3: Turn off google location services
This one should be obvious. You'll lose all location functionality. Not ideal, but it's a workaround.
- Go into location settings and turn off Location and google apps.
Hopefully one day google fixes this thing! Til then, this is what I have found to work for me.
Edit #1: Updated the guide with new findings, organized a bit better.
Edit #2: Attached the correct quicksearchbox apk!
Edit #3: Fixed this post like whoa
So the solution to reducing Maps usage is to disable Location related settings? You don't say...

I don't think your comment was necessary either.
With jellybean, maps usage is quite a bit higher than it used to be because of Google Now. I think a lot of people would like to know ways to curb its resource usage.
This is helpful, OP. Thanks

Meh, wasn't explicitly trying to be an ass, just seems like a pointless thread to me. "If you don't want your location app to spend resources checking your location, then turn off location settings" is right there with "pressing the menu button brings up the menu" or "turning the volume down makes your phone quieter".
If being reminded of these things is important information though, by all means carry on.

I get where you are coming from so no harm no foul. I went from completely stock to the stock jellybean leak. I used all the same settings as before but I did notice unusually high maps usage. I didn't know why but figured that Google Now is the culprit.

Sure, it may seem obvious, but actually disabling most other location related settings won't fix the maps lock in my experience. This one did, and it's tucked away where you wouldn't normally look for such settings. On top of that it seems to have little effect on how your phone operates with locations, so you can have your cake and eat it too.

Hey man! Thanks, I appreciate the comments but I'd hardly call it "my work" lol. I'm interested in doing some custom touchwiz themes but I'm knee deep in real life atm. Maybe once official TW JB drops I'll have more free time. I seem to have a nasty audio routing bug with the current leaks when using Google Music (will randomly switch audio output from headset to speaker when changing tracks) so I haven't been super inspired to do any work with them.
To all others: I have some additional information on how to curb the maps wakelock. If you've installed the Google Search 10/29 update then the setting I'm telling you to uncheck is no longer available. As of right now you can uninstall the update from app settings and then uncheck the setting in question. I'm going to now re-update now with it unchecked and see if the wakelock remains gone. If so, I'll update the OP with the required Google Search apk and additional instructions.

How does this affect reporting of location with Latitude? I think that is where some of my drain is coming from, I'd like to keep Latitude on but find a way to either lessen the number of reports or find a lower power set of location services settings.

As far as I know, latitude is a whole different beast. The settings for latitude are within the Maps application itself. I can't say for sure if doing this method will alleviate your latitude reports but I'd think not. This seems to keep Google Now in check with its constant reporting.
But worth a shot maybe? It could be GNow that's affecting your wake time, unless you don't have it installed.

Yup, I'm still doing some tests (been busy as hell) but the suggestions I originally supplied don't work. Except for the one where you use an older Google Now version, but I'd hardly call that a solution.
By the way, the option your looking for is "Location & Google search". The one you mentioned has a far broader effect. This option will only be present with the older version of Google now installed.
For now I've found that turning off Location reporting in maps fixes the lock. I believe this affects latitude and similar functions though, so if you use those it may not be a good solution.
What's really interesting is in the newer versions of MIUI the "Location and Google search" option is retained upon updating Google Now. I'm unsure why this is the only ROM to behave this way.

I noticed this before as well. I left "Google location services" on overnight as I slept and Google Maps wakelocks (for Google Now no doubt) destroyed my fully charged my battery. Better battery stats helped pinpoint that in my case.

If you turn off "Location & Google search" in older version of Google Search and then update app you will have this new "Let Google apps access your location" option off also after that and none of google apps will be able to get your location including Maps so this is not a solution. It does nothing for me. I don't use any location reporting or google now and still have wakelocks. The only way to completely get rid of maps wakelocks is to turn off all location options or put the phone into airplane mode. And if I stay in one place I get very low amount of wakelocks but as soon I get moving wakelocks start to show in huge amount and they don't stop after I get to my destination. Right now I'm testing this script that I pointed before but I'm still at work so will see if it helps when I got home.

I remember shortly after getting my Nexus 5 that I noticed a hand icon in quick settings for do not disturb setting..
I went to use it the other day and it had disappeared. I had unlocked and rooted and also flashing custom kernel.
So as I couldn't find any setting to re enable, and suspecting it might have been something I had done, I downloaded Google nexus 5 image and reflashed to stock, but still no joy .
Any advice ?

I don't remember seeing anything like this, as I recall. But I am disappointed that the Quick Settings are not really all that quick. Tapping things like Bluetooth or Wifi takes you to the full settings page for that feature instead of simply toggling it on and off as I usually am trying to do.

If you hold the icon instead of clicking it, it turns on the radio. For example, pressing WiFi takes you to the WiFi settings page, but long holding the icon will just turn it on. Same for BT.
As for the Do not Disturb, I've never seen that. I know iOS has it...and I'm sure there are Google Play apps to do something similar, but Android doesnt have that stock.
Sadly it doesn't exist in stock android. They really have to add that. Every other platform has it except stock android.
EDIT: Yes, I know touchwiz and sense have it.

I found that you can press the power button and from that menu you can set the volume to vibrate or mute. Not sure if this is what you were looking for.
Thankfully custom ROMs will be here soon (in more complete/stable forms) to make all of these annoying issues better. Stock Android lacks some seriously useful little touches, but that's why we got unlocked devices....

I've been struggling with this exact issue on both my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 wifi. Flash to stock, setup my account, start the restore process, apps start installing, I wait until either LastPass or AutoVoice are installed and then I can immediately go in and enable accessibility for it. Anything after than and it can't click on the OK button. My theory is that you get one shot at setting whatever applications. It's definitely a bug that not app or hardware specific.

Not a Nexus 5 user but...
I still use a Sprint Galaxy Nexus (toroplus) but, it was Lux for me too. The two reasons I didn't think it could have been Lux are, first, after this same issue came to light with the install button on sideloaded apps, they made Lux auto pause on screens where their overlay could cause issues. Second, it's daytime where I am right now. The screen dimming overlay shouldn't be active during the day. Either way, I think I'll need to poke the Lux devs to inform them that their experimental work around still isn't working in the accessibility menu.
Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll just have to remember to disable Lux when I need to perform protected actions.

I'm having the same issue. Screen goes kinda white for half a second and looks as it would start an app, but then goes back to what app you just had opened.
It is not a constant flickering or flashing, as reported from Samsung and other Devices and which is documented via Videos on the Net.
It would be hard to film it, as I haven't been able to reproduce thus behaviour.
When I play a game (King of Avalon) and when I'm just typing and that issue occurs, the typed text is gone. Luckily it doesn't happen while typing on WhatsApp or other apps with text features.
A while back it was almost gone, but then came back, without me having changed the app Setup.
I will reset the phone and see, if it comes back.
I still think it's an issue brought up from apps that use the GPU a lot.
Have tried different settings the Developer Options from Android (Disable HW-Overlay,...) but it didn't help.
Will report, once I have resetted, but will take a while, until I have time for testing.

Hey, I also had this problem, it helped me change the language in voice search to English and turn off "ok google". I use the phone in a different language and I also had it in voice search.
Hello fellow HTC u11 life friends -
I found this thread by Googling, so hopefully others will find it too. I have also been having this very annoying problem for several weeks. Can't remember when exactly it started. Was it after an Android update?
This problem appears to be related to the Google app settings on the phone, as the previous poster suggested. When I read his post, I went to the Google app settings (Setting --> Apps --> Google) and didn't see anything out of the ordinary, but I noticed that there is a setting called Display over other apps. This was set to "yes" by default, so I changed it to "no". Since I made this change yesterday, I have not had the white screen flash once.
It seems like the Google app is being triggered briefly for whatever reason and then closing. By not allowing the app to display over others, if the app is triggered, you won't get that brief white screen like the app is about to open. At least, that's what I think. Fingers crossed the fix holds. I hope this works for others. Let me know!

Before I call you a genius, I still have to wait a bit (and of course hoping)
I just turned off different things in the Google App "show notification for ***"
In this case *** was for Price Alert, stocks alert, sports alert and so on.
Furthermore I disabled the "display over other Apps" as well.
I could imagine that this latter feature doesn't have to be turned off completely, rather than turning off all those useless alerts for stuff I've never even looked for.
Will try to go the next days to see, if that blinking is gone and if soy trying to activate the feature with almost no alerts in order to determine, what the exact culprit is.
Disabling the feature totally might do it, but if for example some alerts were useful, then it would be nice, if at least they worked out as supposed to.
Will keep you guys posted.
Fingers crossed ^^

Did turn off not only for Google but silenced many other apps as well, but still flashes.
Just deactivated "Display over other Apps" in YouTube. Maybe that helps.
Will report, if that helped.

If any of you are using Dark Knight, it's specific to that room. I'm using twin famous sick Oreo and I don't get the flash

Tried this method and so far (1h) no flashes. Sounds reasonable, that Google is trying to send some notices to the screen and that functionality is somehow bugged. I'm fine with turning off ok, Google. Have never used it anyway. [emoji28]

The white screens interval increesed and taking foto's was sometimes difficult because white screens passed by a few times per taking a foto.
Now I received 8.1 and no white screens till now (20h)

Are you using the built in Camera, or some app?
I got 8.1 too but no changes. Have to admit I'm using Google Cam Port. Might be that, because otherwise I've turned off kinda all notifications, but it's still flashing.
As mentioned earlier, I should do a full wipe and use the built in cam and such, but I don't really like it.
I'll see, when I find the time to wipe and set it up again...

I am using the built in Camera. Two days 8.1 and not a single white flash. Before the update 8.1 I had it not only with the camera app but very random. I hope you will find a solution. I found it very annoying.

I really have no clue, which app causes those issues. Will try the built-in cam for testing.
If it still persists, I really have to reset the phone.
Thx. I'll find a way and yes, it's pretty much annoying

After 4 days a minor white flash returns during scrolling for apps in the app store. I immidiately implemented the above quoted solution and since then no white flash. :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:

Just turned it off. Didn't think about the system processes before.
Will report, if anything changed. Thx for that hint so far, sounds promising
