I find it strange that there's no "restart" feature in Android, and you have to completely turn the phone off and then turn it back on. I looked in the Market for a restart widget but couldn't find one. Does anyone know of one (for non-rooted phones)?
They exist. I think I used one called "Quick Boot". I stopped using it after I corrupted my sdcard once. I guess it was in use when I decided to reboot. I figure the time it takes to do a normal power off on sequence it worth it.
:edit: It does need root. Your phone cant do much without root
If you are the kind of user that wants to add features (reboot) you are going to need root access. If you just want to use your phone out of the box and not add any functionality, dont worry about root
reboot would be a better word to use while searching. There are several apps but all require root. Here is a free one if you decide to root for this feature.

I'm sure "quick" booting and "re" booting are two different things. A normal off/on would be a reboot. Quickbooting is some kind of condensed version developed to not take as much time. I also has negative results trying to quickboot my Captivate, so I haven't tried it again since.

The app "quick boot" I was using has several options including "reboot" and "hot boot". "Hot boot" never worked sucessfully on my captivate. The sd corruption I mentioned happened using the (full) "reboot" option. It worked fine lots of other times so Im not pointing my finger and saying this app will always do that. Just sharing my experience that it is a possibility.

Seems like a security flaw. Anyone can pick up my phone, plug it into a USB port and copy files within seconds. Normally, you'd have to at least have to reboot into recovery, which requires a forced reboot and knowing the proper keys to do that and to enter recovery. As it stands now, even a child could plug in my phone and access the entire SD card.
It's also annoying that if I plug in the phone to my PC to charge while I'm listening to music on it, I don't get the lock screen where I have music controls. I instead get the USB mounting screen. I just have to press the Home key to show the lock screen, but it's been bugging me.
Is there any way to disable this? It wasn't this way in CM 10.1.
Go back to an earlier version of Android, or don't lose your phone.

Your useless answer is unappreciated. I asked two simple questions and you answered neither.
The fact is you can't disable it. The answers I gave are perfectly valid if you don't want want the ability to mount the sd card via the lockscreen. If you're allowing your phone to get into a position where someone can access it like that then what I'm saying is maybe you need to reassess the level of personal security in regards to the device.

>The fact is you can't disable it.
Now that is an appropriate answer. Thank you.
The main topic question was "why?" Why this change in behavior? What's the philosophy behind it?
I'm sorry but I don't know why they changed it like that.

I remember CM9 behaving like this in certain versions, but then it went away, and I never had it in any CM10 versions until now. It's like the developers can't decide how they want it, or it's some sort of mistake or bug.
It isn't the fault of developers here, I believe you can thank Google for that feature.

If you want it to not be like that, go and decompile some file and change the permissions.
Speaking of Google, I'm excited for the new Selinux policy from the NSA researcher. It'll be fun to see ChainFire at it

Hey guys
I'm new here and was wondering if anyone could help me! I have just downloaded and followed the instructions to install and use Substratum & Andromeda for my S8 plus.
I followed all of the steps up to getting myself a theme. Once the theme was installed my screen went black. I wasn't too bothered at first but now my phone is unusable! The only thing I am able to access is the camera by double tapping the lock button. The phone still vibrates if I get a call etc but I can't unlock it.
I get a message that pops up over and over again saying 'System UI has stopped' And the only option is to 'Close app'
I'm not gonna lie guys, I'm an absolute noob when it comes to this stuff. Is my phone gone forever or can I fix this?!
Cheers!
Perhaps some help?

Need some more information to help identify what you have installed last, or more specifically the offending overlay perhaps that does not agree with the "SYS UI"??? Next will be to ask if you understand or have any knowledge working with "ADB" as this will be needed to remove the offending "APP" installed you installed? Having asked this and having been in your shoes, I will tell you that if you have not ever given permission on a connected computer for "ADB" to have access to this phone you have put yourself in a place that a FACTORY RESET is going to be your best solution. I have found other ways to get into my phone using Bixby, as it can uninstall APPS but you would need to again know specifically the name of the offending APP.
My final thought/suggestion would be to spare yourself any further headache and just commit to the FRESET and then Google/Learn your way into an understanding with ADB - it can save you a ton of time while you learn about moding your phone:good:
My last phone you couldn't turn off, reboot, or change network settings while the phone is locked. This is a very useful feature as if your phone "walks away" tracking cannot be disabled so as long as your battery is not dead you have full tracking abilities.
I did notice this feature seems to work with GPS. If you try to toggle, it will prompt for a password but that alone isn't enough to track it. I need to lock mobile data as well. I could probly just remove it from my notification tray but that is an inconvenience as I do use that toggle.
Any Ideas?

Not all devices have added those as all it takes to beat them is removing the sim card and all android devices will reboot if the power button is held for an extended time.
Well I thought about the reboot and it will boot back up so I didn't see that as a problem. Didn't think about the sim card though. Well lets just hope if someone gets a hold of my phone they won't think about it either. Anything I can do to make it harder is still worth it.
Oh well. If someone has a way to make this happen please share. I don't even know if its something I can make happen with an app or by editing anything in the android system. I will keep looking in the mean time.

I can tell you that there are 3 steps when a device is stolen and the first one is remove the battery and the second is remove the sim card so no one can call it. the 3rd step is resetting it.
You will need a custom rom to get those options.
If you care about security too much, I would say never unlock your bootloader.
Its so easy to keep pressing the power button and reboot to bootloader and flash stuff to access your memory (With unlocked bootloader of course)
But with locked BL, they have to erase the storage in order to unlock it and do stuff. So, if security is a big concern to you, its good to always keep it locked.
Hello everyone. I would like to know if anyone experienced this, and if anyone has a solution (or at least an idea why).
The power button of my Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) (SM-A750G) phone does not work at unlocking the screen (if it works in the rest of the functions such as opening the shutdown menu, entering recovery, etc.) when I am using stock firmware, but it works perfectly when using a GSI or any other custom OS.
Do you have any idea what could happen? It should be noted that this happened to me when my phone had the stock firmware and I had never modified my equipment at all... It just happened suddenly and for that reason I switched to a GSI. But now I would like to use the stock firmware, but I will not be able to do it with this "bug".
Thanks 4 the help
You mean unlocking or just turning the screen on an unlocked phone?
The app DoubleTap does away with using any buttons to turn the screen on/off. Simply 2x tap it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...apk&pcampaignid=APPU_1_oD7zX7-SMMvesAWsh5_ADA

P.S: I did not know the app you mention (it did not occur to me to look for something like that XD) I will try it, thanks for the link

That's strange. Have you tried remapping the button? Are there options to do so in settings?
Possibly another 3rd party apk remapped without you being aware of it?
I been using this app for over a year. To spite the ad warnings, it has none. Uses almost zero battery, never connects with the internet and is rock solid stable. Saves button life just keep the screen pointed away from your flesh when in your pocket to avoid accidentally taps.
Note: I never gave it administrator privileges as I never use a lock screen. So not sure about its behavior in that mode of operation.

I tried the app a few moments ago and it seems to work fine, the flesh thing is apparently configurable (assign the volume key, which is the most similar).
Regarding the mapping or 3rd party apks using the button, I see it almost impossible, not only because I don't use any app of this type (that reassigns keys) but in completely clean installations of stock firmware this happens to me (and I don't have any option key remapping that I know of).
It's very weird, at least for me. Because not only does it "break" to unlock, but it is only with stock firmware and even if I change the kernel (I tried using the quantum kernel) the key does not work when turning on the screen. But with the GSI it works without problems.
I even googled questions related to Always in display, power or something similar and nothing, there seems to be no conflicts.

Make sure there's no remapping options for it in settings. If so it may be buried or under accessibility options... I've seen hidden Sammy drop down menus with no indication they are there until you double tap the top label. Swell.
Or simply bypass and double tap it!

hehe, if it is true that there are really hidden things XD
Anyway, I am testing this app and if I see that it works I will be encouraged to install the stock firmware and by the way I will try to dig deep into the configuration in search of an option that I have overlooked

I have checked the accessibility options and there is nothing blocking the button :O

You enabled the appropriate buttons in it's settings?
I'm running Pie; it may not be compatible with 10 and up because of the overlay crap.

Personally, the one that I liked the most (and the one that works best) is the Google official (Android 10): https://developer.android.com/topic/generic-system-image/releases But one problem is that it is very outdated.
Anyway, here is a list of some GSIs that you can check and test which one works on your device: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/wiki/Generic-System-Image-(GSI)-list
And here is a tutorial that worked well for me to install GSI: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-workings-gsi-best-treble-gsi-roms-for-a7-2018.4069121/

Thanks! I'll try that
EXACTLY same problem here. I will not repet your words, I'll just say you described EXACTLY what is happening with my phone, a Galaxy A7 2018 (128GB RAM, Brazilian model - A750G/DS).
I can confirm that:
1 - Problem of screen never turning on after being turned off for the first time happens at all stock ROMs. Tried at android 10, downgraded to 9, couldn't downgrade to 8 because odin would not write the image, but the problem persisted on ALL stock ROMs up untill now.
2 - Problem DOES NOT happen at the TWRP recovery. Flashed TWRP just now, so I can flash a GSI, and I can turn the screen on or off as many times as I wish at TWRP screen, without any problem.
These informations corroborate, almost without a shadow of doubt, the idea that this is actually a software problem, not a hardware one. I'm gonna flash the google 10 GSI now, with quantum kernel V3 (seems to be a requirement, I would like to make as litle changes as possible) and post the results.
