[Q] Crazy battery consumption and radio problems - HTC Sensation

Hi,
I have the Sensation and been having lots of problems with battery life lately.
These are the issues which I experienced:
1) Sometime on mobile data but also Wifi the battery can go down 2% per minute even with normal usage and not particularly bad signal. What could it be ? In general the battery life has been bad .. the mobile will last between 4 and 8 hours in standby.
2) Since flashing a RIL update from the Sensation forum .. the issue of not being able to "search for networks" was indeed fixed, but now often mobile data does not connect if Wifi is out of range / disconnected. I need to go airplane mode and back - disabling and reenabling data is not enough. Any tips on possible resolutions ?

I dont understand why the sensation has so Bad batterylife I used a Motorola defy before and had 5 days battery life without wlan bud with the sensation I get only 1.5 days
?

The problem is most likely your battery. With the original one mine would last about 1 hour playing games, now I bought a new one and I don't even know how long it lasts because it has never gone empty.

I habe 3 1x Anker 1x original an one noname and none of them last longer than one day ... In the sensation specs it says 400h standby newer saw a Screenshot with so much i am testing a New Rom on the defy and right now it says 7 days and 7 hours... And in the defy specs it says 200+ standbytime

Most likely it is your battery.
CM10.2 is also a battery consumer.
I used that ROM too, now with CM11 (20140117SultanXDA rom) it consumes also a lot of the battery, but there are some options to get better life.
I have bought an Anker 1900Mah battery and that is a world of difference.
Besides that I unchecked the option in settings -- WiFi -- Advanced settings -- "scan always available"
Now I last about 16 hours with normal usage.
If you read this thread you will find more usefull options and advices.

I've also just bought the Anker 1900Mah battery (from amazon). So much better than the HTC battery I had previously. To be fair it was getting pretty old.
I find with cyanogenmod especially I get pretty bad battery life, towards the end was getting about 12 hours of minimal use (just texting and occasionally web browsing). With the Anker battery I'm getting at least 2 days and I'm using my phone more.

ROM with best battery life???? Help me plzzzzz

Hello friends ,
It have been 2 weeks since i got my universal (o2 xda exec) , I have tried most of the WM6 roms here , but most of them dont give good battery life..
Anybody know which is the best ROM with Best battery life? or any tips how to improve the battery life?
I usually read books and rarely hear music and i have 4 apps installed and i find the battery drain fast within 3.5hours. For this reason i turned off the phone and wifi. My uni is a new one , i dont want to have the charger all the time with myself.. I go places , do please help me..
Thanks in advance
battery life is awfull and unpredictable
I have the same problem. I use the same crossbow 2.12.08 version
with update radio ( from 1.15 ) to 1.18
I have a larger battery 3200 mAh, but th ebattery life is never more than one day. Though the battery is brandnew...
Worse is that when charging sometimes it shows 100% but most of the time this drops within a few minutes ( 2-4 ) to 97%
Then after 1-2 hours it is on 60% while usage is minimal. no WLAN, no BT
Also sometimes for some reason the battery is very warm ( during loading ).
When disconnected it turns out the universal is almost empty. Tried to disconnect the battery and leave it outside for 5 minutes then back in. but nithing seems to really improve. Also without memory card the results are more or less the same. Also always I close the applications fully.
Maybe someone can tell me what are the possible reasons...? Is is the software. Does it not see the actual charge correctly? Or is there a "hidden"battery user. Read the article about leds and all that, but this is way out of that league.
Rgds
I think that your battery is no good. My battery is 2 years old, it's the original battery 1650mAh and the battery life is 2.5 hours with WiFi enabled (internet navigation via WiFi)
If you want your battery to last longer, check the wiki:

Before blaming ROMs check the device with another battery. I had the same problem too, checked several ROMs and even downgraded to WM5 and at the end it appeared that my battery simply dies, while my other battery showed far better lifetime.
You are definitely having a battery issue rather than ROM. I am using 2.1.2.08 also and can get 3 days of normal mixed use from my original 1620mah battery.
Why not try "resetting" the battery, as discussed in previous forums, I for one can testify to it's success.

[Q] i9020a AT&T/Best Buy Version Advice

Hello All,
Hoping to get some advice. I bought the official i9020a from best buy yesterday (on launch day) seems to be a great phone but I have a few questions and problems.
I unlocked the bootloader but did not root it yet
The biggest issue is battery life. Its terrible (like nexus one before applying the wifi setting trick after 2.3.4 terrible). this NS loses almost 10% of its battery power per hour on standby.
While on standby I have the following running
-wifi turned on
-3 push gmail accounts
Also I noticed that the hotspot doesn't work. when i turn it on it briefly shows 3G and the signal strength bars in green but then the 3G icon goes away and the signal bars turn white, my tablet and laptop can connect but no internet from connected devices and the phone browser itself - just page's not found
my baseband is: i9020aucke1
kernel version: 2.6.35.7-ge382d80
adroid-build 'at' apa28 #1
Build Number: GTJ61
Any advice on the above would be great, I can easily return it but would rather keep it.
Anyone else buy the official Best Buy version and having issues?
Also Anyone know if this phone is locked to AT&T? I don't have handy access to a t-mobile sim card.
Thanks in advance!
Flash new rom. I am sure ATT has some tethering lock on the build. That should be expected.

10% / hr is unbelievably bad (assuming the display isn't constantly on). What's consuming the battery in the battery stats?
Thus far no subsidized Nexus device has ever been sold sim locked (The Vodafone Nexus One, T-Mobile N1 and NS and the various Canadian Nexus devices). I'd be surprised if it were sim locked.
Thanks everyone for the tips. After my original post and now I finished the root and installed cm7.
Cm7 took care of the hotspot issue. Battery life is still pretty dismal in standby. Ill do a test tonight and leave it unplugged all night and post what used the battery the most in the morning.
Thanks again

no man, something is really wrong with your device. My phone loses ~1% in each 4hrs in stand-by (during the night).... I can easily stay 2 days with one single charge (with light use) and with everything ON!
edit: oh, and btw, you won't find better battery in any rom out there. stock rom with stock kernel is the best so far (regarding battery life)... i really tried every single combo and it's the main reason i'm back to stock after so many time (with several devices) using cyanogen. with cm7 i use to lose 1~2% per hour in stand-by!
edit2: you should make some complete battery cycles. Battery life in the first week is not really great, but not that bad anyway!
I think there is something pretty wrong with it
a little over 4 hours last night unplugged in standby/locked
start power: 75%
end power: 35%
most used
display 64%
android system 6%
cell standby 6%
Everything else was system stuff at 1%
Display seems to be the culprit in standby.
Hardware? If so I can easily exchange the phone
Thanks again for the advice
I bought the T-Mobile version back in April. I found that my battery life on day 10 was about TWICE what it was on days 1, 2, 3.... I guess the battery adjusted as it got used some.
I suggest you give it two weeks and then note your battery life again.

I have seen the "battery gets better over time" statements quite a bit on XDA and other forums. I'll give it a week or two and some cycles.
I have to say the "it gets better" is not something i have ever encountered on any smartphone or dumb phone i have ever had though?
Anyone also getting really really slow charging during the 1st week?

If you previously had a non samsung device it charges *slow* even on a 1A charger. No way around that.

thank you! yes - i should have probably mentioned that this is my 1st samsung smartphone.
Yes, it charges really slow and it wont be better. Takes about 3,5hrs to a complete charge.
Battery really gets better after 2 weeks, but even in day 1, never was so bad as you described.

Fixed!
Ended up returning to best buy swapping the phone. the new unit straight away showed normal discharge during stand by and normal battery when in use.
In the end a bad phone.
Thanks to all for the above responses!
ya you definitely had a bad dud...i was lucky in enough to get a good "dud". with approx. of 3 hours of display on, background syncing, and other moderately intensive tasks i was at a point where i was going on 1 day 12 hours 16 mins and still had 40% of battery left.

[Q] Longer Battery Life?

Hello there! Newbie here.
I recently purchased the Optimus 3d and was amazed how poor the battery life is. I must have charged it 4 times in the past day alone! Is there anything I can do to make the battery life last longer?
Any new/better batteries on the market? Or can I change the settings somehow on the device to make it last longer?
Sorry if it's a ridiculous question, i've only had the phone since Saturday so still getting to grips with it.
If anyone can help it'll be much appreciated

Enjoy.
Camp on 2G only would extend your battery 25%. Why?
3G network required force location update every 1 hour. This is known standard.
The timer called T3212.
2G network also having this procedure for every 4 hours.
When we are on 2G network also will have better DRX (discontinues RX) function.
Our phone will listen to BCH (broadcast channel), in some way but not so frequent compare with BCH on 3G.
My preferences:
1. 2G only. (Extend 25%)
2. Switch off data connection, WIFI, GPS, Bluetooth, if you do not use it.
3. Set screen brightness 10-30%.
4. Use widget only when you need it.
5. When you switch data connection ON or WIFI ON, you also need to install AdAway. Ads will eat up your battery too. Eliminating Ads would be great.
Hope this one helps.
I think "Juice Defender" seems to be ultimate solution for almost everyone to manage their battery life.
I also have an habit when charging the battery.
1. I always charge my phone when battery level < 30%
2. I charge it when my phone on.
3. When reach > 95% (or may be already 100%). I switch off my phone.
4. Wait for 1 hour. Keep the charger connected.
5. Switch on my phone again. Keep the charger connected.
6. Wait for 10 minutes. It would be 100% full and check the voltage > 4150 mAH.
7. Then I unplug the charger.
See the differences by yourself.
You may also reduce the display brightness and set it to auto mode, change the animations from all to some, reduce also the screen timeout, disable the haptic feedback of the touch buttons.
Update to V21E ASAP
Thank you superage for that tips. I'm using v21e and the last Promethius pack from Samno (kernel and rom) and the life baterry is more than ok, but with 3G on, lots of wifi and data usage... I will try your methods to improve the life of the battery.

16 hours and 60percent battery. Checking for GC by ringing the phone randomly, browsing, facebook, backup files installation through TB etc and still going strong. Tons of widgets on desktop like battery, Diagnosis pro showing realtime memory, cpu, Dl/UL speed, SD r/w @ 1 sec update. Elixer icons showing bat temp, sd internal/external remaining sizes, xboxlive friends list etc. This setup would last about 18 hours and battery would die but with new rom its going strong
On V20F UAE/ Samno's promethius rom for v20f @ 1.35ghz/196mhz
Finally we have a good phone almost dont want to change it for SGIII anymore

No i dont use data connection but my desktop is filled with widgets as attached.
There's 3500mha batteries with replacement back on Ebay going for dirt cheap. You might want to look at all the background services running and turn off what you don't need, stuff like auto synch and the extra network options.
Trial and error will get you a bit more out of the existing battery.
Why dont you come with Cyanogenmod 7.2 RC2 released in May ? This one excellent coz you can prevent Ads
And dont use Advanced Task Killer I highly recommend you
my advise
hello,
in my opinion you must buy another battery, because software you can't do too much.
Look on obostore.com for battery ANDIDA 1980mA, bring too your phone 25-30% battery time ...
have a good night...

[Q] Disappointing battery life.

I heard good reviews about battery life of Moto G but mine's battery life is disappointing, could you please see my stats and tell me if its normal or something is wrong.
There can be many factors why battery life is that worse. Bad programmed apps, Wifi always on, screen time, call duration, running background processes and so on. Most times i switch my data connection off if i don't need it. I run my phone since 2 days and 8 hours and my battery is on 9% at the moment. As i see your wifi was always on. Try switching it off.

Screen on time is around 4 hours, I haven't called even for a second or used my data connection yet, but I keep wifi always on because I thought it causes lesser battery drain.
How can always wifi on cause lesser battery drain?
Don't know, sounds unlogical to me.
4 hours screen on? Phuu........did not try it but i guess it is normal if you have your screen 4 hours on.
What are you expecting? Switching everyting on and then have a two days battery life?
See yourself on your graph how battery got better when screen was off. Now switch off wifi and try again.
In my opinion i don't see any problem with your phone.
Maybe someone might correct me if someone feels that i am .....

I thought Wifi uses lesser battery than 3G and I expected 20 hours battery atleast.
I see your Wifi is working all the time. Are you aware of this?
In some JB Android version google implemented automatic Wifi networks scanning (probably for their purposes), even when Wifi switch swhows "disabled".
You can disable it, maybe it can save some battery: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2422689,00.asp
Cheers.
Install BetterBatteryStats and see if there's any wakelocks that are eating your battery at the moment.
Also, about your on screen time - what's the settings for brightness that you use? You might want to consider dropping the "auto" and go for a reasonable low level of brightness that fits your indoor or outdoor activities.
Your assumption of WiFi eating less batter than data connection is correct in most of the cases.
Anyway, if you have any doubts about this... an average NOTE3 user can't get to those 3h 30minutes with on screen time

Your battery is normal with so much screen on time.
It does look disappointing,i get a lot more than that but mine is rooted and greenified and set up how i like it.
Im currently on 1d 18h and have 39% left with 4 hour screen time and that's with a mixture of wifi and 3G.
i enable airplane mode overnight though which only uses 1% in 8 hours.
I'd say that's normal battery life for this phone here's mine for today.
I'd agree with the previous post.
I've been on a WiFi network for the past 7 hours.

Motorola is advertising this phone as all day battery phone so shouldn't it last more than 12/14 hours.
A car manufacturer also advertises his car with 500 km per full fuel tank. But if you drive all the time with 170 km/h per hour over the highway then this statement can also not be applyed anymore. As i said, i switch on wifi only when i need it and thats the same with data. I had a battery life for nearly 72 hours. Ok i made also less calls in that time. But it is all about your usage. I for my opinion can not find any problem as i said already. Motorola advertised nowhere that you can use your phone under "full load" for a whole day. This is called marketing in todays world. If you be believe everything what advertisement says then you seem for me very naive....... you should think about that

Atleast the reviews said it last more than a day and I didn't used the phone under full load, just the Wifi was on all the time which uses lesser battery than 3G and I did 0 calls.
It might be true that 3G uses lesser than WI-FI, but what is that for a comparison? You can not compare WIFI and 3G because it is a completly different technology for different purposes. 3G Data uses a lot of Battery that's true. But WIFI also but less than 3G. But this statement doesn't mean that WiFi uses nearly no Battery. It uses only less. If 3G uses 100 parts energy and WiFi uses 85 parts energy out of 100 then it is less. But 85 is still a lot out of hundred. I quoted full load, just as a general statement. I know you had not switched on Bluetooth and so on. But anyway, Dataconnections are a expensive feature in relation to battery life.
Did your review tell you the exact conditions they tested it under? Or did they just say that without any proove? Also Tests and reviews are often copy and paste bull****. If i see an Antivirus test and the Userinterface is tested bad but the userinterface has a 45% weight in the all over test then i would say this is a crap test.

Yes see the gsmarena battery test I've attached, my phone doesn't even come near to its battery life
Unfortunately I can't take a screenshot but I have a stock (not rooted) Moto G that loses excessive amounts of battery with Aeroplane mode on!
What can possibly be causing such excessive battery drain - 50% -> 7% in 6 hours with no screen on or data or wifi.
Thanks

Nexus 5 battery drain - new battery, new ROM, still persists

My beloved red Nexus 5 starts acting up... the battery drains extremely fast. Some weeks ago, I could barely make it to 2pm without having to recharge after unplugging. So I got a new battery (directly from LG, so definitely a genuine part) which improved the situation, but didn't completely solve the problem. Additionally, I flashed a CM 13 CAF ROM (using myfluxi's kernel) onto the N5 - I enjoy it so far, but there was actually no further change converning battery life.
Right now, the phone is at 10% after being unplugged in the morning at 9am. Wifi, bluetooth, GPS and mobile data were constantly on, cell signal was mostly perfect, wifi was connected for about 3h, bluetooth was always connected to my Moto 360. Screen on-time is about 2h and I listened to music using GPM for about 2h. The battery settings do not indicate any app using up too much battery power - it shows the display at 15%, cell standby at 10% and then several apps.
What do you think - a Nexus 5 with a new battery should make it through a day, shouldn't it?
I remember my first Nexus 5, back in the days with a G watch, making it through a day without any problem with 15-20% left when I plugged it in before going to bed... because of that, I start to think if there might be a bad electronics part, like the display backlight or something on the mainboard, using up too much power without being noticed by the OS. Is that possible?
Thank you very much for your advice!

Read and post in the battery life troubleshooting thread stickied to the top of this forum, it will help logically determine what is using your battery.
You have a lot running at once, so difficult at the moment to solve your issue. It's better to turn things on/off one by one to make logical conclusions whether it has any noticeable effect.
The best logical way to conclude if it is a hardware problem is to go fully sock no additional apps no root etc, see if it 'drains' by itself
If not hardware, then 99% of the time it is a bad app(s) keeping your phone awake
This is likely not the case, but have you checked the CPU settings? I've only encountered such a drain while using performance governor together with overclocking.
Same here
I have the same problem and I have been banging my head about it, I don't really use my phone for anything much else than a phone and I kept having at least 3 days of using it with no problems.
Now the phone barely lasts 2 days and even switches off in the middle of the night...

In the OP's case, his drain is likely caused by having GPS on all the time. That will absolutely devour battery life, so he could save himself some grief by turning it off until he than your phone turns off occasionally. First guess would be the power button going bad; that is generally the reason for needs it.
For you, who knows? You've not given any information, otherthat type of behavior

Yes, sorry about that I was a bit annoyed at the phone. I found and fixed the problem. Go to settings > apps > disable google fit > click yes when it gives you some notifications about how you'll lose data or stuff like that > and click force stop at the end for good measure.
I am in my second day now of battery life at 59% with a looooooooot of talking today , I mean more than usual so it is definitely a fix for me. Hope it helps
Take care gents

Again same problem
Hi all,
Unfortunately I have better battery life but I am again losing a lot of battery.
I have a screenshot but I am unable to upload it sorry about that.
I use my phone mainly for calls roughly about 15 mins per day at the most in total ( not a lot at all I know) and I also have my bluetooth on at all times cause I have LG G Watch.
thing is that I have never had problems with the battery before. When I say before back in the day I still had my LG G Watch ( I have it for about 6-7 months) . Problem with the battery started roughly around 1 month.
Location is off, wi-fi is on on very rare occasions throughout the day when I need to check my e-mail and mobile data is the same. Navigation is used only if needed.
The real problem is that before I knew what was draining my batter now I have 79% of battery usage and I have 5 apps listed that drained each 1%
Android System 1%
Phone Idle 1%
Screen 1%
Google play services 1%
Android OS 1%
Where are the other 15 % ??
It is weird I really took pride in that phone and his battery life, I know that it is mainly because I don't use it as a regular used do i.e. gaming, facebook etc, but I still want to charge less than 1 time per 2 days or less
Thanks in advance
Regards
