[Q] Rooting/Imaging Assistance Samsung T679 - General Questions and Answers

I have a Samsung Exhibit 2 4G model T679 phone. I am new to this so if I can some assistance on how to update the Android on this phone. I believe I have already rooted it by going into the recovery and running Root-Stock.zip before install ClockWorkMod. Now after downloading cwm.6025.t679v1.zip to the external_sd card and copying the what I believe to be sdcard root. I get "cannot open for write: Permission denied".
I originally was trying to install TWRP but I get the same problem. What am I doing wrong? I installed Terminal Emulator to run these commands and get now errors with the "cd /sdcard/" command. Any help would be appreciated.

Just installed Rom Manager and got TWRP installed and used it to install AOSP_ancora_tmo-tim1928-4.1.2-Build6.zip recommended from Droidview best-custom-roms-for-samsung-galaxy-exhibit-4g-t679/ . I didn't add GAPPS.zip and didn't wipe data and cache because I wasn't sure and not it boots to the quad color X and just sits there with the different colors swirling around the X.
What do I do?

wipes are very important. In recovery wipe data/factory reset, wipe cashe, wipe dalvic. Every phone i've had when switching roms and all that is standard. you really dont want to have bits laying around currupting everything. If it helps hit the thanks button.

I've got the linaro CM10 custom rom installed and working but having a few issues. I install the Google PLay Store.apk version 4.4.2.2 which opens and closes right away. Thinking it was for the version of Android you have installed I uninstalled 4.4.2.2 and installed 4.0.28 on the Android version 4.1.2 I have installed and the same thing happens. What am I doing wrong?

I resolved the issues I was having with getting the Google Play store going by installing the Gapps that I had all that time.
I currently have an issue with the camera. It states that I've run out of space on my sdcard and that I should delete some files. Though this may be true I have a 32GB external sdcard with only 9GB used. I can't find anyplace in the camera's settings to use my external sdcard. When I do look at the files using efs manager it seems it melds the internal sdcard and external sdcard. Not sure if this has something to do with it.
Can anyone please help me with this issue? I would like to be able to take pictures and have 20GB of space left.

[Q] how to resolve "Installation Error - Insufficient Storage Available"

I just got my wife a new Samsung Infuse. Successfully rooted with the SuperOneClickv1.9.1. I was then able to restore some of her old apps with Titanium Backup.
My problem now is that when she goes to install a few additional apps she gets the following error:
Installation Error - Insufficient Storage Available
However the SD Card and Phone Storage pages show plenty of space!!
Available Phone Storage = 1.46GB
I realized the problem after she had installed some simple stuff like Handcent and MyFitnessPal and they just disappeared. So I went to install ES File Explorer and RomManager to do some troubleshooting and that installed successfully. But another weird thing was that those two didn't show up in the app draw. So I went back to the Market thinking I would try and install again and the market showed it was already installed. So I was able to open the ES File explorer and rommanager programs from the market with the "open" button.
does anyone recognize something like this? I can't explain it?! I'm using the stock rom.
i read something about installing more than 50 apps?
i read that i should try to wipe the dalvik cache? but i can't figure out how to get into cwm recovery to do that?!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091465
I found both of these and I think of my self capable of doing this stuff, but i can't figure out the exact steps to get all the way to wipe the Dalvik Cache.
i'm open to all suggestions..
Please help

This phone auto-copies your apps to your microSD card (external_sd). Try going to Settings -> Applications ->Manage Applications -> On SD Card -> Click an application -> Move to Phone.
Rinse, Lather, Repeat for each application.
Thats not happening with mine. All my apps are installing to the internal sd card. Nothing seems to want to go to my 32gb external sd card except pics and videos. Game data, navionics maps and all that load onto the internal sd
I am still getting this...sometimes I get it sometimes I don't...but there are a few apps that never install because of this...any ideas?

I had this problem and I just kept trying to install. Did a reboot and tried again and it installed. Not sure of a real fix though.

Try this if you have the new market with the book and movie categories. Uninstall the market update and you'll be able to download your apps using the older market. There is a bug with the new market.
Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Downloaded>Market>Uninstall Updates
I had this problem a while back. After hours (i mean hours) of googling, I found that the Market saves the app into the /cache partition. Samsung unfortunately made this partition only 30MB in size. Now, if you rooted and installed a custom rom that has the voodoo lagfix (ext4 partitions), 5 MB will be used as a journal for the filesystem. This means that if you try to download an app thats greater than 25 MB, the market will say that you have no space available! (cue expletives!)
The easiest way to fix this is to temporarily bind the cache partition to a location on your sdcard. For example, lets say you have a folder on your sdcard called syscache.
you would bind /cache to this directory with (run this in terminal or adb. run su first)
Code:
#umount /cache
#mount -o bind /sdcard/syscache /cache
Unfortunately i can't seem to find out how to unbind the directory after i am done. Found this solution on the internet. Use at your own risk :]

[SOLVED] ROM installing problems

I need help installing a ROM, I know how to root and i have superuse and red recovery, however, everytime I install a ROM, i get soft bricked with a robotic woman's voice saying, "convert system partition, data not available... Convert data partion, system not available.
Any ideas? I use the ODIN-one-clcik KJ2 tar i believe.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Finally Installed a ROM successfully, thanks guys for you help,
My solution:
Disable Anit-Virus from blocking important programs (SuperOneClick & One Click KJ2 ODIN)
SDCard needed to be partitioned to ext 2048 and swp 0 (backup card before doing so)
Place Recovery file in system/bin with root explorer, and update.zip on SDcard( Don't Flash !)
Delete any ClockWorkMod on your SDcard,
intsall Rom Manager,
Flash Rom Manager with Sidekick 4g,
reboot into recovery, by using 2click + power method, if still blue recovery, re-install packages; it should go to Orange recovery version 4.0.0.2
Make sure Mounts are correct before flashing ROM,
Thanks for all you help guys :good::good::good:

This is the voodoo/ext4 lagfix.
IIRC, and knowing krylon360, it uses the sd-ext partition on your sdcard to temporarily store your files while it converts your partition.
Backup your sdcard, go into recovery. Partition your sdcard. Give EXT 2048 and 0 for swp.
Then try Odin again.
Thank you, will do

So, I'm guessing Odin worked and Linda talked a bunch and everything in that part worked.
If that is the case. When you boot to recovery, can you run 'adb shell' and get a root prompt?
If so, first mount /system
In adb shell:
Code:
mount /system
then close out of adb shell by typing 'exit'
Then download this zip.
extract it and cd to the directory it extracted to.
Then type:
Code:
adb push su /system/xbin/
adb push busybox /system/bin/
adb shell
back in adb shell, we just need to make sure su and busybox are set with the sticky bit:
Code:
chmod 4755 /system/xbin/su
chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
You now just need to reboot, go to the market, install supersu by chainfire and busybox by stericson and run them both (to mostly upgrade the su binary, but also to make the 'smart links' in busybox)
You are now rooted.
If you don't have adb shell in recovery, please point me to your recovery and I will fix it.
I was never very familiar with using ADB shell, is it, my cmd? Or is it in some kind of emulator?
After this , I think I'm will to have some one do it for me, I'll pay for shipping and everything
The recovery I have after ODIN restore is blue, with no mount options, advanced, etc. All it has is this:
Android System Recovery <3e>
Samsung Recovery Utils
- for BML -
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete all user cache
delete cache data
I think my SD card is corruput, it doesnt show up when I plug it into an adapter to USB to computer; my 16gb does show up.
Im going to retry everything with the 16gb card and I found out how to ADB push, hopefully I'll be able to Root Again on the 16gb

The recovery you have after ODIN'ing is the stock default Recovery. You'll need to root, and replace the recovery. You can use ADB like he said, or just use any old Root File Explorer (By the way, Root File Explorer is on the Market, pretty good but you have to pay.)

When I copy the recovery file into the bin folder in system, and place the update on root of SD, it still comes up blue, however, if I take a recovery out of a ROM file and replace it, it still comes up blue, but, if I hit re-install packages on stock recovery. I was finally able to change my mounts, and now I get this after installing ROM in orange recovery, " Convert system partition, 2 min... back up operation." Wow, now I have a red VooDoo recovery. Wouldn't reboot, or install any ROM from SD because it wouldn't let me mount the SD CARD,
mount /sdcard

I'll test it on a 1gb, before my 16gb.
Right now I have the VooDoo recovery, but I can't install ROMS because it says, "can't mount sdcard," and when I try to mount it, it says:

And Rebooting system takes me back to recovery or a boot loop.

No. I mean to say he's talking about a blue recovery..this could be the factory Samsung recovery. On the Sidekick the default CWM is Orange, and Voodoo CWM is Red.

Does it say 3e?
Or is it version 3.0.2.8 (red or blue)?

Well, the version number is on every screen in recovery. It's always easy to find, because it says v3.0.2.8 or similar.
The point is, in the future, there maybe newer versions, and if you get in a good habit of knowing the version number, it helps to differenciate between different versions of CWR and other recoveries:
2x from Stock Android Recovery (v2 is from donut to eclair)
3e from Stock Android Recovery (v3 is from froyo to jellybean)
v2.5.1.x from Froyo CWR
v3.0.2.8 (Stock CWR- blue or Voodoo CWR- red) from early Gingerbread
there was a v4.x.x.x, but I don't remember how long that lasted...
v5.0.x.x from newer Gingerbread CWR
v6.0.1.x from ICS and Jellybean CWR.
It helps you to know where the recovery comes from. This info is useful for any phone you are on
No, I had stock recovery, I would place a recovery from the Glorious+Overdose ROM into the system/bin, and it would still come up blue, however, when I choose install packages on blue recovery, it takes me to Orange recovery, I'll check versions. And yes, I have an adapter for the sdcard, I checked it, nothing comes up, its done/fried. I'm afraid to try changing the ext and swp on my 16gb 10class because I don't the same results.

Sounds like you had a bad sdcard and did something wrong with the overdose rom stuff. I wouldn't be afraid of the 16G sdcard. Go for it.
Repartitioning your sdcard doesn't fry sdcards.
Maybe TheLastSidekick will chime in and help out with your recovery issue, but I'd still suggest moving to the 16G, partition with 2048M of ext and 0 swp and odin again. try the glorious+overdose rom directions again.
Cool, so I re-did everything (ODIN, rooting) I deleted the clockwork that was already on the SD with RootExplorer, put the Update.zip on root of sdcard, and the recovery in the system/bin and rebooted into recovery successfully with Rom Manager, I have Orange CllockworkMod Recovery v4.0.0.2, now I am going to partition the SD card.
Just one more question, Can I use the same 16gb SD card on my rooted HTC Inspire 4G for ATT? Or do I need to re-partition the sdcard?

[Q] How do I completely format the tablet? Erase EVERYTHING ?

After about a year of rooting my tablet I've noticed it started it started getting slow, So I wanted to install a new custom ROM to make it a little faster.
So here is What I did. I first downloaded this ROM from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314458
-Then I rebooted into recovery mode
- Installed the ROM
- then installed the camera update or whatever (from the same link)
- then I wiped The user data
- then I wiped the partition or something
Then when I turned it on, I saw everything was gone but the device was still a bit slow, so I got on the folder explorer app and saw that NOTHING was erased.
Then I rebooted again into recovery mode and clicked on everything I saw "wipe" lol.
Then When I turned it on again I saw they were gone but they were still taking memory.. only 7 GB was free out of 32GB.
So Could Anyone Please help me on how to completely erase EVERYTHING, ( I dont mind if it becomes unrooted or stock rom)
Sorry for the long post and Thank you in Advance!!
What recovery are you running?
To fully wipe using TWRP, wipe both caches, system and then choose the FORMAT DATA option. That will wipe the internal memory clean.

Boot to he ROM. Install GooManager. Open it. Then tap the menu button in the top right and choose Instal OpenRecovery Script. It will flash TWRP 2.3.2.3.
For android 4.2 ROMs you should be using TWRP or CWM 6.x to handle the new file structure.
CWM 3.1.x is old, like 18 months old...
could you be a little more specific like with links and stuff I only know the basics of rooting

[Q] oh no...what have I done..!

I have spent the last 3 days trying to upgrade my Tf101 with an up to the minute os but have bitten off more than I can chew. I spent the whole of the first day just trying to root it to no avail. Ok, no problem, sleep on it. Next morning tried a different method and " hey presto " I have done it.
So, next job is download " Titanium " and make back up to micro sd card, all done. I then followed " Frederuco's Guide and installed EasyFlasher with TWRP 2.3.6.0 and with a bit of fiddling and button pushing managed to load it and followed his guide right through to the second option " Custom Rom with custom recovery ". I had loaded KatKiss 4.4.2_019.zip along with the add on pack and the latest Gapps package. So far so good. Did full the full wipe/ factory reset, cache, davlick cache, system etc, more success, nearly there. Back to TWRP home screen an click INSTALL to start the flash............where is the micro sd..........? Check further.........micro sd not mounted......oh sugar.......
So now I'm screwed, I think I have bitten off more than I can chew. My little TF101 was working fine before I messed with it albeit a bit slow but it was working. Micro sd card slot was working fine up until now. I am not that PC literate if anyone can help me it needs to be in simple terms please, but I can follow instructions. My pc is running on win 7 32 bit. The Asus was totally stock on the last firmware that ended with .27
I do have a keyboard dock with it but has not been coupled to it through out this process.
Have I trashed my little Asus..?
I appreciate any thoughts even if it bad news. This is the first time I have ever attempted something like this, a total newbie.
Thanks,
Steve
Go to the "Mount" option in TWRP and mount the MicroSD ?
If I remember correctly, with the newer TWRP builds, you have to change between Internal and External SD using a dropdown on the Install page
Also, you need to have the micro SD installed on boot I believe. It is not auto mounted in TWRP.

I thought that and that could have been my first mistake as I had not got the files on it when the Guide told me me to install the rom to flash.
I then put the files on a inserted the card but obviously it still did not mount. I did try the " mounting option " in the program but as you can see I did not manage it. I will try again but I am not holding my breath...!

Tyr flashing a different version with Easyflasher
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688012
Or
Download a different flashable TWRP zip - 2.3.2.3 is the latest official build
Connect PC > TF and boot into TWRP
Use adb to push version 2.3.2.3 to the TF internal sdcard
adb push twrp.zip /sdcard/
Then flash from internal sd
You could do the same with the ROM
ok, lost me there....what is ADB ?
Just use Easyflasher, it's easy and quick
ADB
http://www.geek.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-do-i-use-it-1461697/
I'm still trying now, have Easyflsher open but am struggling with it.......I've done so much reading my brain is pickled...!
I have been trying to use ABD sideload but it is not loading........
I am still trying to sort my problem out.
I have downloaded fresh copy of EasyFlasher- 0.8.3b-STABLE_2.6.3.0 which I assume is the latest version?
I am able to get the TF101 into APX mode and load TWRP.
It would appear that the TF is not connecting to my win7 PC because of a driver issue. When I go to device manager the Android ATP device has a yellow triangle through it which I asume is the driver issue. It keeps trying to load a new deiver but ends up as " Failed "
The drivers that I am pointing it at are " Universal Naked Driver 0.72 which I thought where the ones required or perhaps I am doing something wrong...?
I assume if I can get this connected I can move forward.
Can anyone help me with this issue please. I tried till 02.30 this morning, I never figured that it was going to be this hard..!
Thanks in advance

Can anyone help me with this issue please. I tried till 02.30 this morning, I never figured that it was going to be this hard..!
Thanks in advance
Steve

Hi, don't panic, you have already install TWRPP. At first be sure your microsd card is always on fat32 and get rom and googapps
If ok put your pad off and insert your sd in. Reboot on twrp. To see your sd card hit install, on the high of the screen you can see "choose a zip to install", above hit on "storage internal storage", a new screen will open, select micro sd, your rom and should be here. If you want to remake all wipe before flasing hit the back arrow in the hight right corner. Hit Wipe on the menu, select partitions to wipe, hit all except micro sd and external (of course). Install rom and gapps, wipe cache and dalvik cache, reboot. I try it this day on twrp 2.6.3.10, i don't remenber for 2.6.3.0, but the way is the same. Good luck

Thanks for the reply.
I had 3 hrs on it yesterday before your reply and got nowhere so decided to give it a break last night..!
I appreciate your help with this and will attempt to follow your instructions tonight after work. Are you saying that I should disregard the driver issue as you think I am connected to TWRP ok?
Thanks again

Yes, that the way i try first, if you can boot on TWRP there'snt any reason to reflash it !
To jh1969
I followed your instuctions......perfect, I don't think I would have figured it without your help. My micro sd card was formatted in NTFS...! Did format to fat32 and things started to work. Started form the beginning again and now I have it working again....!
I did a back up using Titanium (Apps+data) to the micro sd before I screwed it all up, just got to figure out how to restore that then things will be a lot better. Any idea how I get Gmail back ?
Thanks again for your help.
Figured out my Gmail problem, found the app on the play store, not sure how I missed it the first time.
Could not figure out Titanium, did try loads of times to restore apps & data but no luck so another late night downloading all the apps one by one and getting them all going.
At least I now have my pad working again but still have some issues to sort out.
I cannot get the camera working, when I try to open it I get " Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped"........I get the response also when I try to open " Gallery "
I have not yet figured out a quick way to look at the Micro SD....on the stock TF101 rom there was an icon you could open up in the bottom left corner but of course that has gone now. Any ideas?
Overall I am very please the way it is performing now, it is much quicker than it was prior to this update so thanks to all for there time for all who have developed these software's/roms etc to enable people like me to enjoy my TF101 and extend its life further. I would like to increase it speed a bit more but I think I had better get any issues sorted before I attempt anything else. I have not put it in its dock yet so will try that later today.

External_SD crashed and Link2sd messed everything

Hi guys,,, I need some guidance to fix this.
I have Galaxy Tab 2 7" p3113 that my daughter uses to play.
So,,, I had to install link2sd and 32gb microsd to link games + data to external sd because she installs too many games.
Everything was fine until sd die.
I bought a new sd, created 2 partitions 1 fat32 and other ext2 both primary as before.
The problem is all previous installed app were "removed" from tablet and I cant install anything from Play Store due Insufficient Storage Space.
Then I deleted all movies, pictures, wiped cache partition, dalvik cache even a factory reset. Now tablet has 4.31gb / 4.59gb free and I cant install anything.
I installed Omni rom to test but same result.
In my opnion, I think this issue was caused buy link2sd after sd died. But I dont know how to fix it.
Could anyone help me to fix this or point me some direction, please?
Thanks

that was my next option but I think it wont help because something is using all space.
After installing Omni rom I was able to install just 2 games: looney tunes and zombie. Once I got insufficient space error I uninstalled both games and Im not able to installed anything more.
Thats too weird.

Download the firmware from this site.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/GT-P3113/
Do you know how to flash firmware using Odin?
If not here's how
Download Odin In your pc.
Link for odin-http://odindownload.com/SamsungOdin/
Now after installing Odin and open it.
select the PDA button in it and browse for the firmware file you downloaded before.
In your device go to download mode by pressing power+vol down.
Connect your device to your pc (make sure you have your usb drivers installed)
Now click start and wait. Once it says finished remove the USB cable.
Now if you are stuck in the boot logo for more than 30mins try going to recovery and perform a factory days reset.
Now you would have the official firmware.
Check the partitions now.
Cheers,

Before Odin step, I tried again and maybe I got it working.
1. full wipe + cache + dalvik
2. reflash Omni rom + SU
3. installed ES File Manager
4. installed busybox
5. installed Lucky patcher => troubleshoot => Remove fixes and backups
Storage space: 4.31gb free / 4.59gb
Now I could install some games like:
Looney tunes, zombie tsunami, talking tom, angela and Minions.
I dont know if this realy fixed my problem but I was able to install those games.
I wont abuse of my lucky today
Any advice on link2sd? Can I install it again and link apps to sd once I get in trouble with space? I read in somewhere samsung doesnt support link2sd.
Thanks for your advices

Well on the first thought you were actually using link2sd before your card got damaged so how no Samsung support?
Well if you think you have sorted it out, try it, if it does, well and good, if not Format/wipe system too along with data next time you wipe and flash
