Hi all,
I just got a Motorola Razr Maxx HD (XT912) off Craigslist ($50). The specs are below:
system version: 98.72.16
OS: 4.1.2
Kernel: Feb 1, 2013
Build: 9.8.20-72
Build Date: Feb 1, 2013
I received a notice that there is a software update to 98.72.165
Reading briefly within the forums, looks like there is a newer version (9.30.1)?
I would like to root, install TWRP, and maybe add a custom ROM.
I see that there is a root method now available for the latest version, but should I root now (and what is the most successful method), or install the OTAs, and then root?
I do not intend on using this as phone, just as a wifi device for my son (finally retiring the Charge).
thanks!
I believe your in the wrong section.
Your phone is a xt912 droid Razr maxx (not hd). Do not accept that update until you confirm there is a root method available. See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192467
The newer droid RAZR maxx hd is a xt926 and its latest update is 9.30.1.
Your only option for recovery on the xt912 is safestrap by hashcode. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391900

Here is my question for everyone. How is it that the moto g on Verizon has 4.4.2 while the droid line is on 4.4? To me it makes no sense as to why we would get Kit Kat 4.4 when the current version is 4.4.2

We waiting so long because -
1.They want fix all known bugs(like mms over Wi-Fi or DayDream bug)
2.Last droids hard to optimize - X8 Comp system,etc
3.It's a business - we have 1 vs 10 Moto G
Developer editions of the Moto X are getting 4.4.2 so it shouldn't be that far off for us hopefully

My guess is that Motorola started working on the KitKat update for these phones when 4.4 was released. After the Moto X and the Droids were updated, they started working on the Moto G and, by then, 4.4.2 was already released. Since Motorola promised a KitKat update for the European G by the end of January, they couldn't update the X and Droids to 4.4.2 first and make that schedule.
The Droids received their last two OTAs about 5 weeks after the first Moto X updates hit, so hopefully we'll be reading about soak tests in about four or five weeks.

This is true. My phone is stable right now with 4.4 so I do not mind waiting for them to make sure 4.4.2 is stable enough for release. I am sure we will get the next set of android updates also after kitkat
I don't want to update my maxx to 4.4 because of the inability to downgrade and reroot, but Motorola's latest app updates are only compatible with 4.4+. Is there any way I could spoof my android version to be compatible?

Just getting back into android and wanted to know if 4.1.2 was the latest version for my Verizon Maxx HD. System version is 9.30.1.
Thanks in advance.
83.46.15 is the latest build which was launched on 9/9/14.It's kitkat i.e. 4.4.2
Rooted my Droid Maxx xt1080 and cant get the free wifi working. Everything i look is for older version of firmware.
I have android 4.4.4 system version 24.3.7 build number su6-7
Follow this method from the Droid Ultra forum. As you are likely aware, the Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra are the same phone, with the exception of the Maxx's larger battery. Anything you see on that forum will apply to the Maxx as well.
This is what I have:
Model: XT1080
Manufacturer: Motorola
Android: 4.4.4
API Level: 19
Kernel: 3.4.42-g6ca5516(4)
Compilation: SU6-7.3
I rooted it with new method I found here last year about this time. While trying to install TWRP, I saw an apk called 'EntitlementBypass' by KrYpToNiTe. I installed it, went into settings and enabled hotspot and... BLAMMM.

By the way if it is not clear to newbies, if you are fortunate enough to get a phone with SU4.21 instead of SU6-x, do NOT, I repeat do NOT flash VZW-4.4.4-SU6-7-release-keys.xml
Because then you are taking a valuable phone that can unlock the bootloader and forcing it to upgrade and it can never be downgraded again to SU4 from SU6
ie. the SU6 cannot unlock bootloader at this time, the SU4 can via sunshine
you CAN root the SU4 but it is using a different file than in this thread
