This needed to be said. HTC one to Nexus 5 - General Topics

Okay people. I'm closing in on a whole week with the n5. After being mugged for my htc one. The change to nexus was a bit sad. On paper the htc one is better in many ways. But in reality. I'm happier now. Here is why
Community
The nexus 5 is being show a lot of support. That alone s enough to take all the pain of getting ripped off away.
Clean slate.
The nexus 5 is nearly free of bulk. Its the pefect device to mod. Just unlock the boot loader. No Odin. No s off. No tegra recovery flashers.
But the most un talked about reason. Its not an android. Its the android. Directly from the mothership. Its like having the Jordan's that Jordan actually used! Not just ones designed for his fans. Its the tobacco from the Indians themselves!. Pizza from Italy!. An actual Mexican taco!. 1970s muscle!. Not today's! Its.. its.. Its Nexus 5!!!...
... That's as lame as it gets people. Thanx for all the help

Honestly a lot of people say its terrible but after installing a custom rom and and kernal. Couple CPU modifications and poof. Better than stock HTC one
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app

ooh dunno about that boss - I think the htc one is far better with the stock rom. I had my nexus 5 for 3 days and got rid. issues I had were the battery been ****, hated the way it left smudgy fingerprints on the screen unlike the htc and the camera was terrible.
now granted I had one of the very first ones and I think the camera issue has been improved but build quality wise the htc feels better in my opinion

Itll get rooted, but bootloader is locked. With the recent breakthroughs on the Droid X with second init and getting CM7 working, count on aosp working at some point on the Photon also. Motorola may even unlock a few months down the road since they promised no more locked bootloaders.
Like the look and nice specs but I only buy Nexus devices. To buy any other android phone other than a Nexus would be stupid.

A sense ROM would probably be a refreshing change from the currently overloaded AOSP based ROMs (not complaining).
Mainly one that's based on sense 3.0. I've seen sense 3.0 ROMs in the desire forums and they look really good. It would be nice to see one for the Nexus.

This is the development forum. Try the Q&A forum. Lots of good people on here willing to help.

We have been scammed by HTC.

HTC allows us to unlock but does not allow total root capabilities.
What is the point of unlocking and losing warranty if the phone is not truly yours?
Love the One S LOTS! But why keep it if development will be hampered by HTC?
Not a Samsung fan but I guess it will be my next device. Maybe sooner than later if I can sell the One S or trade for a G-Nex.
Got the S cause of T-Mobile and want true aosp along with full root functions. Thought it would be no problem to get aosp but wow was I wrong! Sense sucks!
Thanks HTC for once again SUCKING! You are losing the ONES who truly love your devices!

399$ Nexus looking real good right now.
Don't do it man, I had a galaxy nexus and I miss AOSP but Samsung makes some plastic ass phones. It'll get better in due time. The One S has an advantage over the One X and maybe the SGSIII in that the European model and US model are exactly the same.

Not that performance is not already enough on the ONE X but doesn't the Nexus 4 have a quad core S4 and a significantly more powerful GPU. This makes it about twice as fast as the HOX already and it has a bigger battery and vanilla android and will get the newest Android OS'.
My biggest concern is storage size at 8GB or 16GB isn't much and it just doesn't look as nice as the white HOX.
The fact that it's made by LG turns me off. The HOX is awesome in its own right and I think Sense is great in terms of usability. HTC has come a very long way with refining Sense into what it is now (remember Sense 2.0 and 2.1? *shudder*).
I've had the Tegra 3 version of the HOX, sure the 'benchmarks' said it was better, but in actual usage, the dual-core S3 spanked it. On top of that, LTE! Only time I will ever get a Nexus device is if it is from HTC though.
I'm buying one, but I'm not selling my HOX.

I can recommend it. Been runny nightly builds for about 2 months now, never had any major problems (the occasional reboot or something) but everything works great.
I considered switching, but like the verge review pointed out, the lack of LTE is a hard thing to drop. Stock 4.2 would be really nice, but I bet it'll be available soon (either AOKP or CM10) and I'll just keep my superfast LTE.
No.

Me too. LG phones feel and look cheap. They've gotten better recently, but still not up to par with HTC or even Samsung. I'd be interested in a new Nexus phone, but not from LG.
Weren't they talking at one point about 4 or more Nexus devices coming out by years end?

Nexus 5 vs. HTC One performance experience question.

I know these threads drive people nuts. I'm a phone junky. Over the last 2 years I've had at least 4 phones. Although i've had my HTC One since launch day - coming up on one year.
I hate skins on android. That's why I root and install an AOSP based ROM on my devices. I also like battery life and A2DP Bluetooth streaming.
So...anyone out there think the nexus is a worthwhile upgrade?. I'm already running KitKat. Software is no advantage the Nexus has. However... Is the Nexus a worthy upgrade? I have read that battery life was disappointing at launch. Is it still bad? What does the N5 offer over my One?

My 2 cents give the nexus the skip.
i had the htc one and the gs4.. sold my htc one to get the gs4.. then sold my gs4 to get the nexus 5.. i think the n5 is way better the both the gs4 and one.. thats just me.. this is my first nexus phone i love it.. i been threw like 6 top of the line phone in the past 3 yaers.. htc evo 4g.. htc evo 3d.. htc evo 4g LTE.. GS3. HTC ONE.. GS4... Nexus 5 is my fev phone out of all of them
I went from the GS4 to the N5 and haven't regretted it for a second. Out of 12 phones that I've owned over the last 3-4 years, this is easily the best one.
Get the N5 and keep the One.

Let me tell you a story:
Once upon a time, there was a guy who wanted an awesome new android phone. He decided to buy an HTC amaze as that was probably the best phone on the market at the time. He got it 1 month after the phone came out on the market and it was awesome. He enjoyed using it for 9 mos. before HTC decided to stop supporting their FLAGSHIP phone! Alas that phone was relegated to ICS forever.
Then, his girlfriend wanted a new phone and he thought, well, maybe it was just my bad luck to buy the HTC amaze right before HTC decided to realign their phone offerings. The HTC One S looks very good and it has the latest snapdragon S4 chip in it. So he bought her that phone and 9 mos later, HTC announces no more updates after android 4.1.2!
Moral of the story: stick with HTC one if you want an obsolete android OS in 1 year.

Battery life is as good or better. I still have my One and mainly use it to play music, but the Nexus outperforms it in every way and also seems to have a better antenna than the One. Plus, the Nexus has ART which I know is not supported on the HTC One because of Sense.
It's a very worthy upgrade. I do miss the speakers, Aux Sound Output, and sometimes a few 'Sense' things like BlinkFeed and the features in the stock messaging app.
I was in the same Situation like you and i dont regret getting the n5 at all. I had the GpE of the one and still the n5 beats it by a longshot. Speakers and build quality aside the n5 wins everything

Thanks. I have been teetering. I likely will order an N5. I'm going to wait another couple weeks first as a sanity check. But I seriously an leaning towards buying it.

Software doesn't concern me. I hate running skinned android. I root and flash custom ROMs. I mainly want to know if the new device will yield a better experience...
Battery life
Performance
I get the sound will not be on par with my One...the boom speakers are great.

I had the HTC One before the Nexus 5 as well, and I love the Nexus. The One is a great phone, but the One has 1) A faster chipset 2) bigger screen 3) STOCK Android (yay!!!)
However, if you're satisfied with your One.. just keep it. Unless you're dead set on having stock Android. The One does have some nice features, like the speakers (yes, stereo speakers) and very good build quality, compared to the Nexus 5 at least, which doesn't seem to fit together perfectly like the One.
As for battery life, I would say it's about equal. They both have the same size battery.

Good luck getting a 90% working ROM for the phone once htc stops supporting it. The Amaze and One S ROMs all have major things broken on it, whether it is Bluetooth or camera or something else not working or not working correctly. So I would say software for HTC phones are important.

The HTC One does have the benefit of being a GE supported device. Can't predict how that'll play out yet. Besides that, you statement is accurate. I came from ATT with and Atrix4g... the hardware is still great. But zero software support from the OEM and all the ROMs available aren't DD material for someone that uses their phone as part of business.
Hence the move to my HTC One on Sprint/Ting... Just to find out that I should have bought a cheap used nexus s and waited for a N5. :/
The way that I understand the GPE phones work is that Google releases the operating system to HTC and then they optimize it to work with their phone before they push out an update. So updates still have to pass through HTC. If they decide to end support for the one, I doubt they'll continue supporting the GPE phone.

That's just it. Even though the UI of the GPE One is all Google, it actually uses the stock Sense kernel. Once HTC stops updating the phone, it stops for the Google Edition as well.
