Anyone grabbing this badboy? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just thought Id share this with you guys...

sounds pretty badass but its kinda ugly

My brother wants to go on my line, and imma either tell him the evo 3d or this.

The specs seem pretty good but its kinda ugly and looks bulky...after this nexus I don't think I want to go to a heavier phone..oh and I love cm7 and miui

Locked bootloader
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Itll get rooted, but bootloader is locked. With the recent breakthroughs on the Droid X with second init and getting CM7 working, count on aosp working at some point on the Photon also. Motorola may even unlock a few months down the road since they promised no more locked bootloaders.

Like the look and nice specs but I only buy Nexus devices. To buy any other android phone other than a Nexus would be stupid.

I think it is nice, but, I genuinely love my NS4G and I haven't even rooted and started flashing yet.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App

Yea dont blame you. I personally like Motorola and think itll be the best all around option sprint will see this year. Best battery and radio, guaranteed.

Battery life will be awesome. It has a 10 hour talk time.

If it gets unlocked, I'll jump on it. Tegra 2 processors are second to none with their 3D capabilities. I'm skeptical about battery life and the qHD display. The only phone I'm interested other than this is the SGS2 but that's not going to be out until fall according to our samsung rep.

How would that be stupid? Other manufactures add functionality that should be included in stock android already but isn't. Unless you're stuck on the "ill get updates first wagon".

That's a matter of opinion and on the development device you have the source to add to if you wish : D not hating on you but most run to the nexus line to escape what the carrier added.
The proton is ugly imo lol, can't imagine comfort holding that thing also why are all these dual cores only pushing one gig?

Hell yeah I am getting this phone. It is what the EVO 2 should have been. And it will be rooted, not worried about that.

I had a flashback when I seen it I couldn't place it but I got it, the motorola i1 presumably one of the worst phones produced with android. It featured iden push to talk and that was the only selling point, shipped with 1.5 android when froyo was out, the list goes on. the design is a perfect match as far as the shape. Visit this link
www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Mobile-Phones/MOTOROLA-i1-US-EN
load the flash video and check picture 2 and the last one out. Very bulky

Off topic but which do you prefer more, sense or motoblur. I used sense 3.0 and I totally hated it, it felt like the UI was bogging down the hardware. I never tired blur, i know some people have a thing against it but don't know why...

To answer you unsarcastically, no you cannot. Verizon will not activate a phone that is not theirs. If you're looking for a stock Android experience on Verizon, check out the Xperia Play, and if you're looking for a 4-inch smartphone, check out the HTC Incredible 2.
Incredible 2 is locked down. I don't think anyone has even rooted it yet. Thunderbolt has a decent CM7 alpha, but isn't a good phone. OG incredible is a great phone but very small. Bionic should be dropping shortly, it will also most likely be locked. Oh, there's always the Samsung Charge

Yeah I played with it and actually ported a version of the GingerBlur UI theme to the Fascinate. Its an improvement no doubt. Hardware wise like I mentioned earlier moto is solid. I like Sense, it doesn't give me bad performance, and it looks nice.
Please go somewhere else where people want to hear your bull****.
A sense ROM would probably be a refreshing change from the currently overloaded AOSP based ROMs (not complaining).
Mainly one that's based on sense 3.0. I've seen sense 3.0 ROMs in the desire forums and they look really good. It would be nice to see one for the Nexus.

not saying it isnt. i love my nexus s. im glad i chose this over the arc. i was origanally going to get the arc on contract but then found out they has the nexus s in stock and asked for this one. i een chose this over the galaxy s2 as this is part owend by google and we should be the first to get the update if i am right. but still to trade the E3D for a nexus s is to me a little bit silly if you ask me. the E3D is an amazing phone and HTC are very good at making a fast reliable deice. Ok so i returned the iphone 4s that i bought for my girl cause you guys brought it to my attention that i will not get 4g on simple mobile. Now we are at a stand still in deciding between the galaxy s2 and the htc 1s. What do you guys think the better phone is? These will be tmobile phones running on simple mobile by the way. Thanks.
Or do you think we should get the galaxy s3?
I have the lg g2x right now which is rooted/unlocked/running hellfire 2.2.

Yep. I agree that was probably uncalled for. Sorry to thekid1. A better answer may be to wait until the new Samsung is released and for the old model to drop in price. Thekid1 has asked about things before that are easy to research.
I would never ask an internet forum how I should spend my hard earned money, but that is me. I wish all my clients would ask me to how to spend their money.
Like someone said before if you want to get updates get a Nexus and don't waste your money on any other android phone. I'm done with non Nexus devices I'm tired of the lack of suppose all the manufactures have for phones. You won't get much suppose from Samsung been there with the Vibrant they will release a very slightly revised S3 3 months later and forget you exist. No thanks.

Just get the One S. It is insanely fast and is built really well. I love it for a couple key reasons:
1. It has the new snapdragon S4 which is based off the newer smaller A15 architecture rather than the A9 which is in the Gs3 and almost all other phones right now. The A15 is more powerful and uses less energy.
2. It has a smaller 4.2" screen which in my opinion is the biggest a screen should be.
3. Build quality is really good and feels good in my hand.
That is my grain of salt for consideration.

Where to next?

I don't have an upgrade yet, but as the date draws nearer (December) I really start looking at what is coming out between now and then, and I must say I'm not feeling particularly confident about any given upgrade path.
If it's true the next Nexus will be Nexus Optimus based off the Optimus G I'd probably consider the Optimus G since having identical hardware to the galaxy S worked many wonders for the captivate.
Outside of that, the Xperia Tl looks like a pretty great device if it gets enough support to see decent long-lived dev support.
So, what upcoming phone do you think will have the best dev support? I would really like to keep getting updates long after the manufacturer officially drops support.. and Even if it's only 400$, I probably will skip the nexus since 16 gigs isn't enough without expandable memory storage..
Same. I also have an upgrade due this December and the new phones on at&t aren't interesting. I would've gone to the one x but their at&t version has ran into a wall because of a recent update that locked the boot loaders down, hard. (At&t officially does not support unlocked boot loaders for it). So, the Cappy is still moving forward

I'm cautiously optimistic about both the Xperia TL and the Optimus G.
I know that back mfr support can ruin otherwise great phones.. both in terms of upgrades and devs ability to make custom roms.. So I'll be looking anxiously at the LG Optimus. If the One x+ keeps the 64 gb of storage or even just 32gb of storage I would seriously consider it too assuming the dev support was adequate.

I am really worried the Note 2 will be far to big for my taste. The 4.7" phones already seem *huge* to have to stick in my pocket. Aside from that I'd be worried about the quad core exynos processsors which I hear make it hard to cook up custom Roms.

LG Optimus G looks very promising. I love its hardware design (on the same level with HTC one x or better, IMO), that quadcore Qualcomm s4 processor, and the screen is fantastic. I wish At&t included the 13 mp camera. But then again all cellphone cameras will never be perfect.

LG Optimus G looks very promising. I love its hardware design (on the same level with HTC one x or better, IMO), that quadcore Qualcomm s4 processor, and the screen is fantastic. I wish At&t included the 13 mp camera. But then again all cellphone cameras will never be perfect.

I want a decent camera but, honestly my absolute biggest concern is long term dev support. I wish there was an environment more "open" to dev with carriers. I understand they don't want to have to deal with people bricking their phones.. At the same time "voided warranty" scares off most people I talk to about custom roms in the first place.. So I don't think they are really gaining anything by locking down phones.. People either care about the warranty or they don't.

Well I'm guessing it's because carriers want you to buy a new phone for every upgrade date to make $$$ so they lock boot loaders (of course, that assumption could be false). For long term development support I will buy an international Samsung galaxy s_ device or a nexus.

Unfortunately, I'm kinda tired of the SAMOLED displays.
As far as why they do it, forcing customers to buy new phones is a pretty horrible reason TBH.
There are far too many people who are angry at manufacturers for failing to update fast enough. When you remove their ability to install their own update, you're just giving them a reason to find another product.

Me too, which is why I'm going to the One X or Nexus 4. I have a Nexus 7 and support is good. But I don't think any phone out there will be better than my captivate, development wise.

Haha, yup that's a good point. I'm glad that the cappy was my first android device and is/was filled with plenty of developers to support it. I'm kind of sad to leave it this December, TBH.
What do you think of the SGS3?

I left my Cappy last October after the USB port died and I got tired of switching out batteries to use it for the SGS II. My SGS II just had an unfortunate accident involving water, so I pulled out my trusty Cappy which I could not part with since it was my 1st Android device. Thank god for all of the awesome development that has and continues to unfold for this device. I am on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and its like I never left. I do not know how much longer I am going to use it (Nexus 4 looks tempting), but it continues to be an amazing phone that I will continue to go back to whenever other phones fail on me.
Kind of off topic but I really wanted to say how much of an awesome phone this is. Props to all of you who kept it for a full two years! :good:

I like my galaxy s3 alot

Nexus 4 price is hard to resist, lack of storage and lte is unfortunate but can't beat 350 for a top of the line device. And it's a nexus.
I'd consider the nexus 4 if I didn't have the nexus 7 already
Might as well go with the school of fish since the galaxy s 3 is $99 now at select stores. Cant beat that price with all the features it has. But you gotta admit the HTC one x is a nice looking phone, and dare I say, and to which nobody has mentioned yet, the Lumia 920 (in red) *gasp*

Most major retailers will have GS3 for around $50 on black friday..if you are stateside...also Sam's club will have it for .96 cents

One thing im wondering as I look at the nexus 4 is that there are 3 buttons back, home and multi task (which is long press home for us) one of the things i love is the dedicated options or settings key, anyone have any experience moving to no options button? One (of many) things that bother me when im using an iPhone is the stupid steps you have to take to change app settings.
I'm reconsidering this phone for that reason,(although im sure XDA can give me options to remedy this issue) am i the only one who thinks a dedicated multitasking button is a waste and long press home is a fine alternative to open up another shortcut option?

+1 here. Maybe a custom ROM for the Nexus will give you the ability to do that.

Getting a Nexus is your only safe bet for long term dev support and you don't have to deal with locked bootloader and losing your warranty by unlocking it (you have no choice with Sony and HTC, because you enter your IMEI to unlock it which void your warranty, unless you do some third party unlocking method). Also for the price of the Nexus 4 and being a Nexus device, I don't see why one would get the Optimus G with locked bootloader and probably poor support, if only for the 32gb storage which is not worth it compared to all the things the Nexus offer (ie, Google updates, easy to flash, best dev support and highesst quality rom, pentaband, elitist Nexus fanboys community).

Various CyanogenMod and AOKP-based rom is capable of customizing the on screen NavBar, including for the Captivate. Try AOKP rom and look for the Navigation bar settings.

Custom ROMs allow you to change all sorts of things about the navigation bar. You can have more buttons, different buttons, even shortcuts/widgets.
Also, I can say from experience that the three button setup is better than the four button setup.

Considered selling your HOX for a Nexus 4?

Well, have you? I have. I know I can get at least $325 for it if not the full $350.
I feel like it's a bit of a downgrade but I'd like other opinions. (vanilla is looking pretty nice with JB so distant still)
OK. What's the major difference, honestly?

Vanilla android. Which is a big difference over stock. I have a Nexus 7 and I love the UI.
More battery and more RAM.

Cm10 is pretty close to vanilla. If that's your only reason for switching then so be it. I have one reason why I won't switch. And once that is remedied I'm going to nexus permanently.
4G LTE.

I'm not comfortable using CM10 unless by now it's finished or much more stable. Do you recommend it?

I haven't used cm10 yet. But aokp is extremely stable and has a lot of customization.

Not that performance is not already enough on the ONE X but doesn't the Nexus 4 have a quad core S4 and a significantly more powerful GPU. This makes it about twice as fast as the HOX already and it has a bigger battery and vanilla android and will get the newest Android OS'.
My biggest concern is storage size at 8GB or 16GB isn't much and it just doesn't look as nice as the white HOX.
The fact that it's made by LG turns me off. The HOX is awesome in its own right and I think Sense is great in terms of usability. HTC has come a very long way with refining Sense into what it is now (remember Sense 2.0 and 2.1? *shudder*).
I've had the Tegra 3 version of the HOX, sure the 'benchmarks' said it was better, but in actual usage, the dual-core S3 spanked it. On top of that, LTE! Only time I will ever get a Nexus device is if it is from HTC though.
I'm buying one, but I'm not selling my HOX.

I can recommend it. Been runny nightly builds for about 2 months now, never had any major problems (the occasional reboot or something) but everything works great.
I considered switching, but like the verge review pointed out, the lack of LTE is a hard thing to drop. Stock 4.2 would be really nice, but I bet it'll be available soon (either AOKP or CM10) and I'll just keep my superfast LTE.
No.
Please stop these alternate phone threads.

Me too. LG phones feel and look cheap. They've gotten better recently, but still not up to par with HTC or even Samsung. I'd be interested in a new Nexus phone, but not from LG.
Weren't they talking at one point about 4 or more Nexus devices coming out by years end?
now that i have had a chance to red some reviews i think im going to pass on this
but im going to stick with my HOX and see what comes out in the new year

Thought about it, but I couldn't live without LTE. HSPA+ in San Diego is a laughable joke. A lot of times I can't even stream music when I am driving.

which reviews dissuaded you? they all seem to only harp on the lack of LTE but to be honest, I don't get LTE where I live anyway.
