I would like to change/mod/theme my application list icon. The little grey button with the six white dots on the dock bar that opens up the app drawer. On my old phone the .png was in the launcher apk. I decompiled GoogleHome.apk since that's apparently the stock launcher for the Nexus 5, but that icon, or any icon for that matter, was no where to be found. I already checked the framework and the system ui. Any ideas of where to check next?
It's in Google Search.

I was looking for that....but can't find the apk. Is it literally called googlesearch.apk?
/system/priv-app/velvet.apk
That's the system apk which is older than the one you have installed though. Its been updated since 4.4.2 OTA.

Thank you! I am on 4.4.2 and velvet.apk is there.

How do you make it so that the "green globe" browser icon will launch a different browser? For example, if I want to use Firefox 4 Beta, but want to retain the "green globe" icon on my main dock but have it launch Firefox when I tap that, how do I do that?
I recall the browser once asking me what I wanted my default browser to be. I don't know how to clear that or reset it so it asks again. I've tried settings and clearing cache, etc. Doesn't seem like I can clear the "launch by default" option in the app settings. It's faded out. Can't even do anything in that section.
Help?
Settings. Applications. Manage applications. Click browser. Clear defaults.

The green browser icon will always launch the default browser unless you use a custom launcher like adw where you can change the icon of Firefox to the green globe.

Right. I was hoping there was a more 'official' way to do it. Okay, thanks.
You could edit the PNG inside the Firefox apk - I know it can be done but I don't really have knowledge of it. Perhaps search for PNG editing?
Edit: Didn't see that you wanted to use the stock Launcher and make firefox the one that launches from the dock. I'm pretty sure that's impossible without some deep deep coding.
If you open the apk with winrar or7zip it will leave the file signed and zipped but you will be able to edit images within the file. open the res folder and find a firefox icon. Replace it with a globe and the icon should change.
I'll actually try this in a few minutes to see how possible it is. If it works I'll post the modified apk

I changed the icon and while it is clear it has been changed (you can see it in the installation window) it wouldn't install. Next I tried overwriting the standard apk with the modified one and that only resulted in making the entire app disappear on reboot. I attached the modified apk in case someone else wants to try but I'm throwing in my towel.
EDIT: Odd, it didn't actually attached my file so here is a download link
If you are willing to use a third party launcher, I can attach the gingerbread dock background as well as the stock icons so you can achieve the same effect.

Device= Qmobile Noir A8, Dual core 1 Ghz with ICS 4.xx.
Problem= Launcher deleted.
Solution= Read below
_______________________________________
I deleted my build in Launcher's .apk from /system/app folder after installing another launcher.
After i deleted it some how the new launcher stopped (My task killer killed it i guess) and never came back.
Now i was with out a launcher and all i had was the small status bar on top of the screen.
I could access the settings though, but there was nothing their to help me.
The task killer was accessible from status bar and i added the new launcher to its white list but it didn't worked.
I had no ROM backups or any thing like that and almost bricked it.
Luckily i had rooted it just after a few days of usage.
So i googled to restore some launchers in my device.
I had found a few solutions but non were working for me.
I download the SDK and tried pushing files to it.
The device was rooted i could access the root but nothing was getting pushed with an error message.
Next I tried every thing else that i came across on the whole internet and hours and hours of searching.
In the mean while an SMS came and i could access it from status Bar.
That gave me an idea.
How.
1. I could receive SMS and reply to it once it appeared on the status bar.
2. So i compiled a text message from another phone and the message contained a link "w w w.g o o g l e.c o m.p k" and i sent it to my device.
3. when i received it on my phone i had a text message with a link, the link was active and after pressing it i had the option to use my browser or playstore. after choosing playstore i had access to every thing.
downloaded a launcher and saved the day....
May be if some one had similar problem then use this method to restore your launcher or some other system app.
hahahahha how simple
Mmmmmmmm or you could have just pressed the search button which would open up Google search and could have searched play store the app would have showed up and you could have clicked it

If you could get into settings, couldn't you have gone into the list of apps therin and either gone to the play store or the launcher itself? Did restating not just fix it?

The screen was empty and i had removed all the widgets from it already. There was no search option any where. Only thing i had was status bar and settings(through the status bar drop down menu.

How can u open play store from settings.
Restart was not the solution
I am currently launching Google Now by long-press-home. Is there some 1x1 shortcut or something I can make as an alternate?
JB 4.1 based ROM, FWIW.
Thanks,
AJ

HY,you can always use the search bar i guess is 4x1 but does the job.
There should be an icon labeled "Google" in your app drawer. You may drag it to the home screen and start Google Now from there.

Thanks. I will try these suggestions.
I didn't think the "Google" app would launch Google Now, but I obviously didn't try it.

I side loaded android L on my nexus 5 ,but there seems to be issues with it. I lost my gallery app and one of the quick toggles in the notification panel is invert colors option instead of the auto rotate . What should I do?
The gallery app is not bundled in the Nexus 5 factory image. Google wants you to use Photos app. If u really want it back just search the forums. I saw a link to the old gallery app floating around somewhere. Or even better install piktures from play store..
There was another post about the invert colors toggles as well somewhere here, I just can't seem to find it. May be you will find it.

Hi, I'm looking to click a homescreen icon and have it run a search for "weather" in the Google app, NOT the browser.
This will essentially therefore load the new Google weather card from one tap of an icon, the way it should be, or the way iPhone users have it.
Thank you.
