Device= Qmobile Noir A8, Dual core 1 Ghz with ICS 4.xx.
Problem= Launcher deleted.
Solution= Read below
_______________________________________
I deleted my build in Launcher's .apk from /system/app folder after installing another launcher.
After i deleted it some how the new launcher stopped (My task killer killed it i guess) and never came back.
Now i was with out a launcher and all i had was the small status bar on top of the screen.
I could access the settings though, but there was nothing their to help me.
The task killer was accessible from status bar and i added the new launcher to its white list but it didn't worked.
I had no ROM backups or any thing like that and almost bricked it.
Luckily i had rooted it just after a few days of usage.
So i googled to restore some launchers in my device.
I had found a few solutions but non were working for me.
I download the SDK and tried pushing files to it.
The device was rooted i could access the root but nothing was getting pushed with an error message.
Next I tried every thing else that i came across on the whole internet and hours and hours of searching.
In the mean while an SMS came and i could access it from status Bar.
That gave me an idea.
How.
1. I could receive SMS and reply to it once it appeared on the status bar.
2. So i compiled a text message from another phone and the message contained a link "w w w.g o o g l e.c o m.p k" and i sent it to my device.
3. when i received it on my phone i had a text message with a link, the link was active and after pressing it i had the option to use my browser or playstore. after choosing playstore i had access to every thing.
downloaded a launcher and saved the day....
May be if some one had similar problem then use this method to restore your launcher or some other system app.
hahahahha how simple
Mmmmmmmm or you could have just pressed the search button which would open up Google search and could have searched play store the app would have showed up and you could have clicked it

If you could get into settings, couldn't you have gone into the list of apps therin and either gone to the play store or the launcher itself? Did restating not just fix it?

The screen was empty and i had removed all the widgets from it already. There was no search option any where. Only thing i had was status bar and settings(through the status bar drop down menu.

Is there any free apps out there that can add date (maybe short format) to the status bar (maybe beside the system clock)? I googled and found Date Status Bar by Modded Logic but cant seem to find a valid url for download and not found in the Market (only free apps in the Market in my country). Also havent seen any screen shot for Date Status Bar.
The reason being is that if i can add date to the status on top of the default time and battery indicator, then i can remove the clock widget from the home screen and save some screen real estate for other apps.
appreciate some feedback. thanks.
If you press on taskbar(don't drag it) you will see date on taskbar

yes, i'm aware of this apps but cant find the apps in the Android Market in my country. I'm trying to search for the apk file, but failed so far.
Have you tried the Market Enabler tool?
http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/
It's for paid apps from different countries, but if you are not seeing a free one where you are it is worth a try. I have used it to grab US only apps from Europe, it's easy. Good luck.
market enabler is only for rooted phone. there's no root for HTC legend yet.

ok works well now. if the developer can get rid of the 2 notifications, then it will be perfect!
I've been using an app called "calendar in status bar" from the market. Not free but it's simple and works great.

Tonight Google released Car Home as an independent app in the market. It has a ton of improvements like assignable buttons and drag and drop icons. I can't get it to download with Cyanogen(Koush) nightly 09302010 but I know I can through ADB.
Let me know if you can get it to install through the market.
If u have root explorer just delete car home then install from market
I was able to get it to install from the market on Skyraider Vanilla 3.0 RC3. Works well except for the fact that you cannot assign shortcuts to the customisable buttons (e.g. direct dial shortcuts), only app and navigation shortcuts. Seems like a peculiar oversight.

I got Car Dock to install from the market after deleting the old car home apk but I cannot see an icon in my apps listing. I checked under Applications-Manage Apps and it is there. Any ideas?
EDIT: Nevermind. AppBrain allowed me to download it. To those who can't get it from the official Market, use AppBrain.
CyanogenMod CarHome Instructions
Car home contains two components, the activity (this is the app we're updating) and the launcher. The activity contains the guts of the program, but the Launcher allows it to show up in the app drawer.
If you're using CM6, you have CarHomeLauncher.apk already in system/app and just need to install the com.google.android.carhome-1.apk file. If you are not using CM6, then you may need to install both the Launcher and the carhome apk if the carhome app doesn't show up in the app drawer.
adb remount
adb shell
mv /system/app/CarHomeGoogle.apk CarHomeGoogle.apk.bak
install attached apks. Let me know if there's issues.
As an aside, both LauncherPro and ADW have the capabilities to create shortcuts for activities, bypassing the need of the Launcher, but it still will not show up in the drawer.
When I installed from the market it put com.google.android.carhome-1.apk in the /data/app folder, is this the correct location?
When I go to the app from appbrain it shows it as installed but the open button is grayed out.
Reading the app comments it looks like you can't launch it independently anymore but will launch when placed in the dock, I have yet to verify this.
Works, but has to be in the dock.
I'm running a Sense ROM (Virtuous 2.7) and I installed the Google Car Home using Appbrain. If you click on the Sense Car Panel App in your drawer, you're presented with a pop-up to choose which app you want to use: Sense Car Panel or Google Car Home. I just checked the "use as default" box and selected the Google Car Home. Now when I click the "Car Panel" icon in my app drawer the Google Car Home launches instead of the Sense Car Panel.
Where is the information that shows this is a product made by google?
If you're using ADW.Launcher, you can make a new Custom Shortcut, choosing ADW's Activity List, then selecting Car Home's main activity CarHome(.CarHome)
You can then launch it fine without any problems without needing a dock. Atleast it works for me...

The key here is to leave the CarHomeLauncher.apk alone in system/app. This way it will show up in the app drawer.
adb remount
adb shell
mv /system/app/CarHomeGoogle.apk CarHomeGoogle.apk.bak
Thats in, now install Car Home from App Brain (don't know why it won't show up in the Market).
Alternatively, APK is attached, although unverified if this works.

I added the app from a link I found on droid-life. You don't need a home replacement as they state.....
I simply used BetterCut to place the "activity" of the car home on my screen. Once in I started customizing things like removing the Music Icon (since it doesn't work) and replaced it with Mixzing. I also removed the People Icon and Dialer as I can just use the Voice Search to do everything in the car so I don't need to look at the phone.
My only wishes for this: that you could add toggle widgets (such as Vlingo's Safereader) and that google would allow Bluetooth to initiate voice search instead of a call directly.

You're welcome!
You can't install it in the first place because you can't update apps in system/app through the Marketplace. This is also probably why it doesn't show up in the Marketplace - Verizon doesn't sell any "google experience" phones so they disallow it on Verizon (this is just a theory).
The reason it didn't show up for you might be because whatever ROM you have installed (default HTC Incredible ROM?) doesn't have the Launcher built in.
It is working but there are some bugs, which can be the reason why Google retrieved it back from market; I get FC when trying to set a custom background from gallery and also as soon as tap on the "android settings" option in the app settings menu.

Apparently HTC in their infinite wisdom decided to remove the voice search icon.
Install shortcut, then run it and it will allow you to start the voice search app using whatever method you wish. Then pull the notification bar down and create your shortcut. Dragged mine down to the dock and all is right with the world again.
Anyone notice that the voice search sucks in comparison with CB? It worked much better on my old ATRIX 2.

use a root explorer app and delete it from /system/app . install new version from play store

Just dug around a little, found it.
Add to homescreen --> Shortcuts --> Activities --> Voice Search --> Recognition Activity
Surely you found it by now, so this is for posterity, for other people who stumble upon this page like I did.
Great tip thank you..

I went to Shortcuts, but the first one that pops up is Bookmarks. Is there no other simple way? I can't download and install it because it's already installed...
Alternate Solution
For those who can't make the above solution work, try this: (OK, I'm not permitted to include a link because I'm a "Noob") Go to AndroidCentral and search for "Missing the Voice Search button? Here's the fix!!". It will also refer you to an app on Google Play called "QuickShortcutMaker".
Hi just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this random menu bar that's appeared on my phone? I've closed all applications with es task manager and it's still there. I'm running Jellybeans on a galaxy note 2
If anyone can direct me where to get rid of it would be most appreciated.
Cheers guys!
Do you mean the bar on the side with the icons?
I think the phone has TSF shell launcher, try a launcher like apex or nova

I had a app popup as the playstore, and it was a spam type popup from an app i installed a long time ago, DOWNLOAD AIRPUSH detector also as a double check if experience any abnormal popups to your GUI . it found the app and i uninstalled it ASAP (it was a workout app)
That popup is not abnormal, it is a feature of the last update. It's called multi-card, and allows you to manage 2 or more applications simultaneously on the screen; if you drag one of the icons on the desktop it opens the corresponding application, and if you drag another will open the new application under the one that is opened before
That's amazing cheers guys! It was properly bothering me becaues it would pop up every now and then and I didn't know why!
Is it possible to add other applications to the selection to use in multi windows?

First of all:
Open your dialer app and type:
Code:
*#*#7378423#*#*
It will bring you to the service menu. Once you're in there, go to Service Tests, then click Touch Screen.
Try to draw vertical and horizontal stripes on the screen, make a screenshot (press volume down + power button simeltaniously) and upload the picture to this topic.
I believe it's an issue with more Xperia (2012) phones running ICS.
I know there is a screen calibration patch available (FOR TIPO), I'm just not sure if it also works on Xperia J.
You can try it, I dont give any guarantees it works, nor am I responsible for any damage.

Another question : i just updated the firmware of my xperia J to 11.0.A.3.28 and everything is smooth and fast as usual...
except:
when i run an app or do something that's not in thr homescreen, when i go back to it, all the icons and widgets reload their images, resulting in 1-2 seconds of slowness...has anyone of you experienced such a thing?

Is it like, lagging, skipping small parts of the screen when you're swiping it?
something like ____ __ _____
as example?
Or is it just that it reacts slow, or sometimes not at all.
Ok, that happens after the use of a specific application or game?
Normally, the home screen is redrawn when the application(s) you're running need almost all RAM memory.
When you don't need an application, try "long press" in the home button.
You will see a list with the open applications in the phone.
Swipe right or left to close an application.
I experienced this with my old X8. With Xperia J didn't happened yet.

I do not agree to what you say here, as it is a list of RECENT apps and not of the open ones. Some apps that still run aren't listed and some of the listed apps don't run anymore.

Swiping an app away will effectively "kill" most apps. You can test this out using ADB if you have the SDK installed. Swipe everything out of your recents list, then launch the browser. Use ADB to run 'ps' on the device and verify that the com.google.android.browser process is running. Go to the home screen, it's still running. Launch some other apps, and the com.google.android.browser process is still there. Swipe it out of the recents list, however, and the process is gone.
You can create a test app to further verify, and log the onDestroy() call in your Activity. It's not called when you back or home out of the app, or when you launch other apps. It does get called when you swipe the app out of the recents list though.
I do agree that the recent apps list isn't really "multitasking". The apps in the list aren't necessarily even running, the processes could have been killed by the memory manager long before you try to re-open it. However, you can't argue that the only purpose is to jump quickly to other apps when the swiping makes the actual process go away.
