What's the difference between the regular Moto G and the GPE? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I am probably going to purchase a Moto G soon and want to make sure I get the correct one. Obviously no one has the Google Play edition yet, but what do you think the differences could be between the Moto G from Motorola and the GPE version? I know that the GPE won't have any of Motorola's preinstalled apps, but are there differences in the code or anything? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

It is the same Smartphone as far as wie know at the moment Like you said nobody has it just now. gpe is full aosp without modification
Sent from my XT1032 using xda app-developers app

It will not differ much with the reular Moto G is guess as its almost stock too with a few handy extras.

I'm guessing the main and most noticeable difference will be the easily unlockable boot loader for the GPE and that it won't have the moto apps. Idk and maybe slightly faster updates than the moto version??

The main advantage of a Play Edition Moto G would appear to be its ability to get timely updates. The firstAndroid 4.4 KitKat update rolled out to Moto G devices just last week, which means that it trailed the original 4.4 launch by a couple of months. The Play Edition will likely get updates much faster
Also
GPE replaces highly modded phones with unmodded stock aosp
As moto g was near stock aosp... NOT many changes will be seen

They are hardly stock AOSP anymore. It appears it doesn't come with the AOSP messaging app but uses Hangouts and it may also come with the new Google Dialer. So while a lot of it is based on AOSP, GPE is much more than that.

Original Moto G is more AOSP than GPE.

Hmm, the Moto G was released after 4.4, so it doesn't really count.

Which one is better? I want moto apps like active display, smart actions etc.

Moto G GPE will already have 4.4 out of the box
Moto G GPE is Fully Vanilla AOSP
Moto G GPE has Stock Camera APP not the modified one
Moto G GPE has no Motorola Assist
Moto G GPE might get faster Updates then Moto G cause it is more naked than naked as our Moto G already is
Hope this will be flashable on our normal Moto G's
And much better it would be if we then can get GPE's OTA updates

The google play edition will get updates in days rather than months.
Also, it will get official updates further into the future than the normal Moto G. Normal Moto G might not get anything further than 4.4.x.
It will also have none of the Motorola junk, hence it will not slow down over time.
I really wish Motorola launches this in India also. Since Google play store is already selling devices in India, they just need to add one more.

What about active display?

Moto G has none of the extra features of Moto X.

Will we be able to flash gpe Rom to normal Moto G?
Is that possible with other gpe phones?

It should be straight forward to flash the GE rom to our Moto G's as the hardware same & the software is near enough stock Android as it is, & we won't be loosing much compared to the GE additions of the HTC One & Samsung Galaxy S4, but gaining an advantage of quicker updates when available .

Of course, they are identical apart from some software missing in the GPE.

Possible to turn non GPe into a GPe?

Will it be possible to turn my unlocked U.S GSM Moto G into a Google Play Edition with it being able to receive OTA updates from Google?
My Moto G is all stock atm.
Sent from my XT1034 using Tapatalk
it should be possible by soon, just as its possible for HTC one and GS4 to turn into their google edition roms.
I just hope it's possible for dual sim as well since the google edition one is only out in single sim version

you will likely need to unlock your bootloader but other than that, it should absolutely be possible.
And I'll need root, correct? I remember when I had my at&t HTC one that you couldn't just flash the GPe edition ROM for OTA updates you had to do something else for that..

Most likely not. But we will not know until they post the rom.
why would you want to do this ?

New dialer, no bloatware, full list of system languages (like Russian for example)
I am waiting for such conversion guide. I did the same with my HTC One before.
UPD: As I am using Nexus 5 I want only stock Android on my other devices . Because 4.4.2 is awesome ) I really enjoy it.
Thanks for the replies, i wasn't asking it to sound rude,
just didnt know what the differences where.
I don't know about u guys but I have the Google dialer on my stock-non rooted US GSM moto g. On 4.4... It's the same one as my nexus 4...
So besides the camera software and no Motorola features/ apps (which I find cool/ useful like the battery saver) there's really no difference.... Yeah software updates... Whatever.

Faster Android updates and probably outlast Motorola's updates..as OEMs typically stop putting out updates once another device comes and steals the thunder.
As for the dailer I think that's still exclusive to the Nexus 5 where it shows a picture based on the number which it gets from a automatic Google search I think..possibly more features.

IMO we don't know yet if GPE versions will actually be faster.
Moto mostly just added a few Moto apps for their OEM version. That's why they had 4.4 ready so fast I think.
And the reality with GPE is that the OEM, Motorola, is actually responsible for the work.
So Moto could decide to release simultaneous or delay one or the other.
If they ship both OEM and GPE 4.5's shortly after Android 4.5 is announced, that will make them look good (and will be good), and I'd bet that's part of their plan.
An unlocked Moto X can have the bootloader unlocked and then have different firmwares flashed to it. For example, I had a Moto X from Mexico...sim unlocked. I unlocked the bootloader, of course voiding the warranty and I flashed the ATT firmware to it. So I basically converted it to a ATT Moto X. Which is similar to converting a ATT HTC One to a GPe HTC One etc.
Nevertheless, because our Moto G's bootloader can be unlocked and we can flash firmwares etc once it unlocked, I'm assuming we'll be able to flash the GPe Firmware to our Moto G..

[Q] Moto G GPE Rom in a Moto G Moto version?

I have the following question: Is it possible to install the android version of GPE on a regular Moto G? And if that is possible, i will can update via OTA in the next Android launches?
Judging from the s4 and HTC one. Yes you can probably flash it, but no ota's won't work.

If its like the HTC One., you will get OTA's.
If it's like the S4, you will not get OTA's.
Because our bootloader is unlockable, I'm hoping we will be able to easily convert just like it's easy to convert unlocked Moto X's over to different carriers / firmware. And if so, we will get OTA's as well.

Very much looking forward to the Google Play Edition ROM becoming available for the Moto G sold by Motorola. That will mean I could have both the GPE ROM plus the use of the 1700 / 2100 MHz (AWS) band that is used by T-Mobile for 3G HSPA+ / 4G in the USA.

Official custom roms (CM, PA, Carbon) for Moto G?

When will be the first official custom roms available for Moto G? Cyanogen Mod, Paranoid Android, Carbon Rom, Slim Kat?
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Its already near pure android and xposed can give you all the options and features those roms give....so demand/need for custom roms is low. (Until updates are no longer made for the g anyway)
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
Then the Nexus devices should have the lowest demand of those ROMs... oh wait.
Sent from my XT1032 using xda app-developers app
They don't get their warranties voided when you play with them. More than likely another factor with Motorola's. (aside from dev editions)
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
We can forget about an official ParanoidAndroid. They only build officially for Nexus and Oppo. For CM, we would need a maintainer, and for other custom ROMs, we can only hope for their respective devs to give attention to the Moto G.

The same goes for Xposed framework. To use it, you need root, to root the phone, you need to unlock the bootloader.
Oh....we lose our Motorola features too. Many wouldn't like that.

Haven't you learned yet that asking for ETAs is verboten?
They will be available when they're ready. CM11 is in the process of getting merged in I believe, I'm working on Omni (having some issues with modem initialization currently that causes the device to continually reboot, will be looking in more detail tonight.)
Omni nightlies may never happen until the device can get a dedicated maintainer with more time than I have.

If you have ordered it from Google, and have no "Motorola" apps on it at all, it is a "GPe", if you bought it in a store, and has a MOTOROLA logo and APPS (camera, assist, whatever) it is a non GPe version.
It makes no difference, the only difference is that the GPe is stock Android from Google, non GPe is not.

Memory leak in all Moto G. How come Motorola doesn't fix it?

Hi,
all Moto G have a memory bug: launcher redraw sometimes and apps running in the background restart (-> interrupting them, like skype or music player). How come they don't fix this? This is ridiculous and insulting the customers.
Not all motorolas , my moto on 5.0.2 br not even once have memory leak
All Motorola have it, in fact, since is a Lollipop problem, all phones with Lollipop have it.
The problem is on Google side, not Motorola, the question is: How Google not fix it yet? Even on 5.1 have the Memory Leak.

My Moto G running 4.4.4 also has this bug!
Use custom kernel and problem is solved.
I'm facing no memory leak on Brazilian 5.0.2.
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Free mobile app
It's not a memory leak it's an OOM issue. Kernel stops the highest resource eating process and waits until memory is cleared up. Hence the disappearing facebook chat heads. At this point this error has to be targeted at its kernel source. I basically removed oom_killer from killing processes. This could lead to a system hang if too many processes are used. #yolo
This fix ruined my system. I'm on xt1033 optimised 5.0.2 by lost101 and arde pruma 1.2 kernel. I've uninstalled the fix but still have effects. Slow response and lags... I'm planning to factory reset to get rid of this? Any comments for other ways to recover?
Edit: I've reflashed kernel again and still laggy...
1.- Memory leak is a problem from Google's source, not Motorola.
2.- AFAIK this leak is fixed on 5.1 (at least the big ones)
3.- There's an Xposed module launched today called Fix Lollipop Memory Leak. You can install it and see if it helps.
4.- Remember, most of the problems are related to an update from 4.4.4 ->5.0.x. Try a factory reset and see what happens.
My S5 had this issue, I am on 5.0, Samsung recently released an update and all is fixed. So I wouldn't blame Google, Motorola can fix this. Does the 2015 Moto G have this issue as thinking of buying one?
