Black is back - Moto X Themes and Apps

Use at your own risk. I'm not a developer and won't be responsible for any damage you might experience using procedures described bellow. I’ve just adapted the method; all credit goes to Nexus 5 developer hello00.
I always believed that the power consumption is one of the most important issues regarding mobile phones. If you live dynamically you simply don’t have everywhere opportunity to charge your phone. And then you find it empty when you need it most. Not to mention that considering possibility not going through the full day with a single charge is unacceptable for me.
One of the most amazing features of the AMOLED screens is zero consumption with totally black color. And then came KitKat which put everything on shiny white color. It could be nice (in matters of taste, there can be no disputes), but besides it drains the battery you are not always in the mood to get a beam of bright light into your eyes.
So I made a little research in the direction to turn my screen back to black without fatal intervention to the stock ROM. I’m rooted, have bloatware removed, on art and so far I managed to made the following alternations:
I replaced the boot logo with attached one and removed the bootanimation. For replacing the boot logo I used Moto x toolkit, the bootanimation I simply delete from data/local/moodle (it is possible to replace it with the custom one as well).
I also replaced the Moto’s SMS and dialer with those from Google Nexus (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2519733). Now I have fully functional Google dialer and both apps in black. Short manual if someone is interested (you must be rooted and have one of root managers installed - e.g. root explorer):
1. SMS. Do not delete stock app. Rename it adding .bak or move it to sd or to the computer just in case you want it back.
Take any of the SMS zip files according to your choice from the site above. Extract it and find Mms_Signed in the system/priv-app. Copy Mms_Signed.apk to the Phone – SD. In Root explorer (or equal manager) change rights to rw and copy Mms_Signed.apk to the system/priv-app. Change permissions to rw-r-r. Reboot and find the new SMS app in the application drawer. That’s it.
2. GOOGLE DIALER. Do not delete, remove or freeze anything!!! Copy desired zip from above site to the computer and unzip it. Find both files GoogleDialer.apk and GoogleDialer.odex (if you’re not deodexed) in the system/priv-app and copy them to SD. In Root explorer (or equal manager) change rights to rw and copy both files to the system/priv-app. Change permissions for both to rw-r-r. Reboot. In your launcher (if supports, I use Holo HD, otherwise get Anycut or similar app) open activities, find first Phone activity and start it. You should have the Google Dialer of your choice activated.
I’m attaching screenshots and applications I use.

Thanks the inverted dialer looks awesome.

Would you make a version of this compatible with the standard Dialer? You realize the MotoX doesn't have the Google Dialer. I liked this one:

Sorry, unfortunatelly I'm not a developer, but I'm sure that someone can make it leaning on Nexus variants. But then, why won't you give the GN dialer a shot? It's virtually Moto x dialer + goodies. Like searching business directly in dialer or finding information about people who you calling due to the data from any website or social app?

Thanks for this. I followed your directions after reboot I opened anycut and there is no phone activity. I had the plain bright white Google dialer working on my X just fine. After replacing and changing permission and reboot it doesn't acknowledge these. I put the old Google dialer back and rebooted and it's back like it was. Not sure how to get these great looking inverted Google dialers to work.

Hi,
did you find the Google Dialer in activities? If you did and chose it, the dropdown menu should appeared and the first activity which has Phone in the name should be selected. If you didn't find that, the Google Dialer wasn't activated properly. After installation and reboot, did you see the notice that 1 application has been upgraded or something like that?

I didn't see that notification that an app was updating which I thought odd because I've inverted a lot of my apps and always got that after reboot. Just to be sure, I remove the old dialer and odex, replace with the inverted ones, fix permission, reboot, etc. Do I leave them named googledialer? I had an issue when I put the regular white google dialer on where it needed to be renamed to just "dialer". I tried it both ways though. I'm hoping I just missed something

Keeping the name Google dialer is OK. But tell me, when you say that pushing the black dialer doesn't cause any app update and you can't activate it, what about the ordinary white Google dialer? How did you manage to install and enable it? Did you get it in the Application drawer or had to find it in activities?

With the other Google dialer I swapped out the dialer apk and renamed it dialer rebooted and it was there. The file I used didn't have an odex file just an apk. I'm wondering since I replaced the dialer with the Google one of trying to install a different one is causing a conflict. Though, even after I remove the old Google dialer it still doesn't give the apps upgrading message. I.. ugh don't know what I did with the stock dialer apk. I put it somewhere but can't find it. Wondering if I put out back how it was it shouldn't cause a conflict. Not having an unlocked BL shouldn't be an issue I don't think. Thanks for your help.

Okay, I figured it out. Since I installed the generic Google dialer before the inverted one together they're causing conflicts obviously. Alone this apk and odex won't work. Got it to work freezing the white dialer but had no way to end calls. Basically I need the moto x's stock dialer.apk . I have no idea where I put it when I switched. Searched all over. If anyone has it you'd make my day.
UPDATE. Got the stock dialer back now and have the inverted Google dialer calling. Force closes after a call is placed. Going to clear data and see if that fixes it. This has become an obsession... I've played around so much that now I have to figure out how to make it work like others have.

You likely generated a conflict between two Google dialer apps. If I were you, I'd clean up everything and start form the beggining. Firstly I'd get the original dialer into function, install it, set permission, clean data and cache and reboot. Then, when I have original dialer totally working, I'd push solely the black apk and odex to the system, set permissions and reboot. That should do the job.

Thanks for the advice. I put the stock dialer back. It's one from the att ROM I download and pulled out. Set permissions, cleared data, reboot. It updates on reboot though no icon is shown. I add it on my desktop with activity and launch it. Opens fine, alas when I dial a number it goes off on a fc death cycle, the only way to end the call it's through my status bar. I think that when I put the white Google dialer in I must of done something. It works fine when I put it back. The white google dialer was just an apk, no other files were included in the download and it functions as a stand alone dialer starting and ending calls all as one. I had to rename it dialer to make it work. Something in that changed it. Oh well, can't restore backups with my locked bootloader so I don't want to fiddle too much with it. I have the white Google dialer apk that functions all as one of you want to see it. Thanks again for the help.
UPDATE: I got it working! There was something wrong with the stock dialer apk I found. I dug around on my computer and found my old one. Switched some stuff out, changed 644, then yad yad..it works great. Thanks so much for the help. Oh, does the caller ID work for you?

Stock Contacts/Dialer

Does anyone know where I can find the stock 2.1 Contacts and Dialer .apk's?
Are these even possible to install as .apks? I'm trying to get my phone to as close as stock as possible without rooting. Thanks
i am very interested in this as well, but i think we'll have to wait for root or mods to get the stock dialer, contacts list, sms app and keyboard...
i'm afraid there's only a few of us who /don't/ want the HTC modifications to Android on our phones...
If anyone finds these I'd also like them. The HTC sense ones leave out too many options and replace them with fancy icons.
Add me to the list.

just adding my 2cents.. i would love to have the stock android dialer from nexus/moto droid please.
Bump...
Is there any reason the n1 dialer, contacts and sms app can't be ported/installed on the incredible?
We've gotten a few things, clock, gallery, etc...

They depend on the stock framework and without root , they cannot be installed. I'm pretty sure that if you try to install them it'll tell that the application already exists.
ok, i was wondering if there was something prohibiting the install... thank you for the update.
bump, now that we have root, has anyone had success getting a stock mms.apk, contacts.apk or phone.apk installed?
without removing phone.apk and mms.apk from the device, contacts.apk is the only one from the n1 dump that will /attempt/ to install, but it fails.
i assume, once the stock phone.apk and mms.apk are removed, the n1 mms.apk and phone.apk will also fail to install, so something needs to be modified, but i don't know much about all of this yet, i imagine i will learn a lot, as roms are released and kitchens, etc...
but if anyone has ability, and wants to take a whack at it, or point us in the right direction for learning what we need to do, please let us know...
otherwise, i suppose we wait for a vanilla rom to come out... here's hoping the nand flash is hacked soon...
You cannot "install" those sorts of apks. You simply have to copy, move or push them into the folder with rw access. It just overwrites the old file and then it will function if it can. If you overwrite the apk with an incompatible one, you will probably crash your phone. You also have to be careful because a lot of applications are dependent on each other.
To remove Sense means removing about 90 applications since they all depend on each other. If you do not remove them all, you will have compatibility problems and a lot of fc's and possibly boot loops. You also have to make sure you have replacements for most of them. Then there is the whole framework issue. Our phones are built and configured to work with Sense and the htc framework. You could probably manage to remove most but not everything without messing up your phone. Since we do not have a way to do a nand backup yet, I would just sit tight.
If you want a phone without any residual bits of Sense, you will want a Cyanogen based ROM. It has no Sense whatsoever.
For now, there are a few good apps in the Market for free that can act as replacements for most things like your contacts, launcher and mms.
If you want to do an easy Sense removing mod that requires root, just search for removing the htc lock screen. It is very easy and will give you the standard Android lock screen with the tab unlock feature. You will, however, lose the music player and notifications on the lock screen that htc has programmed in.

(script) (3/24) Omegasun's Bloat and Sense Removal with CM 7 Version

*****Omegasuns App and Sense Removal Script*****
Version 2 now compliant with new Recoveries
This script was created to make removing bloatware, sense, HTC widgets and many of the safe apps from your EVO easy. I personally run pretty bare bone version of the roms I use. I remove Sense and most of the excess apps that i replace or dont use.Because this was so time consuming to do manually with how much i flash i started working on a script that allowed me to do this quickly.
I have followed many different threads listing what people have found is ok and what people have found is not ok to remove.
Please remember that this script removes the apps that I personally dont use or need. While some of the apps may not be considered bloatware y some I typically run a pretty bare system. Please see post 2 for instructions on how to modify this version of the script so that you can adjust it for your needs.
To Use:
1. Flash your new rom (you can use with your existing skip to step 3)
2. Boot up the phone fully
3. Install your launcher replacement and set it as default.
4. go into Friend stream and turn off auto-sync for Facebook(leaving contacts is ok)
5. reboot into recovery
6. Nand back up
7. flash the attached .zip
8. reboot
This will completly remove sense and the HTC apps/lockscreen as well as all peer networking and sprint apps except navigation, VVM, and promotion. It will also remove various other apps that have been found that when removed do not cause stability or other outstanding issues.
This script has been tested on Evio, Fresh, Damage Control, Koni's Elite, Myns, MikFroyo, and Virus Roms on several EVOs with out problems. I am not responsibility for boot loops, data loss, or damage done to your phone. PLEASE REMEMBER TO NAND BACKUP
Regaw_Leinad Has graciously created an app to allow you to edit this script and resign it easily. If you want to change anything in the script i highly suggest downloading it and using it to do so
you can get it
HERE
All you do is drag and drop the zip of choice (1 or the other of the 2 zips attached to the OP) on top of this program's icon, it will open the script for editing. Can be run from anywhere on the computer.
Steps for using RegawMOD Script Editor v1.0 Omegasun:
1. Drag and Drop zip on top of this programs icon
2. Edit Script when it pops up
3. Save Script, then close Notepad
4. Go back to program window, select YES to go on
5. The original zip is now updated with all of your changes and still signed!
NOTE: This will currently NOT work for the old attachment O_A_S_R_W_mail&browser_1.0.zip, because the zip can NOT contain the "&" symbol in the zips name.
If you downloaded the version with & in the name either change the name or redownload the corrected file.
A huge thanks to him for making this!
thank you to zergburger for maintaining a great thread with ok to remove apps, Calkulin for his sense removal zip It helped me verify the apks i have being removed. thanks for replying back to my in my Q and A thread. I modified your script a bit but I have a question. Why is there a delete for SYSTEM and DATA? Also, is it safe to remove livewallpaper picker? and what about weather?
I've been doing this manually on many of the roms that I use so this is great. It would be even greater if the script was modified, if possible, to place everything that has been removed in a folder on your sd card. This way if you do want something back on your system, you can easily reinstall it.
Ima try it out on mah Fresh 3.2 later
just a quick suggestion.
you are removing KEY apps so Please post alternative applications that people should download PRIOR to running your script.
such as.... dolphin hd to replace the browser.... handcent to replace messaging.. etcetc
you know as well as i do these kids around here are going flash this without reading a damn word and completely fvck their phones up.
offer your personally used replacement apps please.

why google voice? it doesnt work, in fact its some of the worse voice detection i have ever seen.

Weather should be safe to remove and live wallpaper picker as well (if you do not want to use live wallpapers)
Some of the apps i have removed are not in the system folder usually because a rom moves it to make it manually uninstallable. Since that happens i placed the ones i have run into in data in as well so i dont have to go back and uninstall them manually if they are moved. thats why there is a data and a system delete.
just a quick suggestion.

I will update to add some suggestions. I kind of see it as if people choose not to read the directions (which i do say to install replacements) and they mess up their phones its there own faults. Also the worst case scenario is they figure out that it removed there mail app or what not and can later download a mail replacement (or nand restore) so it wont mess anything up too the point they cant fix it if they forget a step (the exception is if you don't install a home replacement you will get a boot loop). I am also going to work on a couple other versions of the script so that people who would like to keep the stock browser/mail or sense etc can still have a version that isnt quiet as drastic as the first one. thank you for the suggestions.

I originally was going to take this approach but since i never reinstalled any of them myself (and most of the ones i might are available on market or have a suitable replacement for me on market) so i Haven't reworked the script for it yet. If people prefer having them all stored on the SD card for reinstall i will work on this.
If there are things in the script you know that you want to keep. you can modify the script (again i take no responsibility if you mess up your phone or the script by modifying it.)by deleting the lines for the apps you would like to keep then replacing it in the .zip. if you do modify it you will just need to make sure you flash it with Clockwork as it wont be signed.
During this week i will try to get out a version that keep sense a version that keeps stock browser/mail and peer networking for those that you want them.
thanks again for all the feedback.

I uploaded a version keeping the browser and mail apps. (if you have already removed them this will not restore them. To modify this script i suggest you unzip it then navigate to META-INF>com>google>android>update-script.
open the file in wordpad or notepad and remove the lines of the applications you do not want removed and make sure to save it with out an extension (default saves it as .txt this will not work). once you have done that open the original .zip in your zip program(i use winrar) navigate to the same place and drag and drop the modified script on top of the old (do not change its name). this should now be modified with the lines removed. Sine this wont be signed flash via clockwork.

[Q] Cleaning up the bloatware - Kidzone?

I tried searching the forums and found nothing...
Like a lot of others, i dont like most of the applications that come bundled on my phone and like to get rid of most of them. I cant seem to figure out what .apk file to remove to get rid of the "Kidzone" application. Any ideas?
If any root-level file explorer works, download Absolute System from the Market. It's about two bucks but it's worth it. You can use it to remove any bloatware from your device.

Not in this case. We do not have S-OFF.
Freezing the apps with titanium backup lasts between reboots, luckily. Won't remove them completely but they will be prevented from running or showing in the app drawer.
Only problem is I'm having trouble finding the package names of a couple bloatware apps, namely kidzone, highlight, friend stream and t-mobile mall. If anyone could find the names of those packages it would be great. I'll look up the names of the apps I did find in a little while and post them for you.

Kidzone appears to basically be a locked down version of the home screen that only lets you turn on Youtube, Internet, Bejeweled, and T-Mobile TV from that screen. It requires you to setup a password for the lock screen. It appears to be built into sense. It's not really an application. Mostly a replacement lock screen. There's nothing "kid" about it honestly.

I am fiddling around with dumping sense now, that will probably do it. I'll post back here if I can figure out how to make kidzone go away.
Meantime - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16739548#post16739548
okay - sorry to post after myself but I got rid of kidzone.
First, I restored a CWM backup I made right after root/busybox installation.
So, my phone state is fresh S-OFF/Root with SU & busybox installed.
It may be important to note that I did a factory reset to my phone just before S-OFF/Root & had a freshly formatted MicroSD card.
I then installed ADW Launcher from the Market, and hit my "home" key. Selected "Use Default" and chose ADW Launcher.
Now my phone defaults to ADW as it's launcher.
I then installed "Absolute System" from the Market, and used it to remove "HTC Sense"
Closed out Absolute System, then scrolled between all 5 ADW desktop screens, powered down the phone, then powered up again. (*NOTE fastboot = off)
Booted fine, was able to ditch sense without issue, and KIDZONE IS GONE!
As always, make sure to do a fresh system backup before messing with anything like this, but Kidzone is linked to sense, and replacing sense with another launcher will remove it.
HTC Sense was the only app removed from the phone, and I haven't checked everything to make sure it works yet, but no HTC crash report to send, and no force close issues. (yet - to be determined)
I've been itching to ditch sense since I got the phone, and this was my first quick test at it. Works good so far.
Edit to add:
Checked the "personalize" option at the top of the "settings" list. This just brings you back to the main desktop, doesn't throw an error.
I knew this one thing would be messed up somehow after ditching sense, but the fact that it doesn't make a problem and just closes the menu is fine by me.
I'll spend the rest of the day testing out my phone without sense to see how it runs. I'll post back how it went tomorrow.
Edit - 11/01/2011:
When I said "without sense" I meant without the sense launcher. I expanded on and clarified that in another thread (that app thread) but never cleared it up here.
To fully remove sense is one heck of a project, and will take much more then just switching your launcher.
This is great info - but with this last method - can you still use the stock/factory camera app? Is the camera fully functional, it might not be a big deal to some but would be cool to retain full factory camera functionality.
Wow, feels like going back in time -
Yep, stock camera app works fine.
It's tied to sense, and there is no true AOSP ROM out there yet, so pretty much no matter what you do you should keep stock camera functionality.
Actually, keeping the stock camera functionality/app is the main reason why there is no AOSP ROM yet, it's been generally decided that losing that would be...undesirable.
Kidzone is part of Rosie.apk, which is the Sense launcher. You lose it once you switch to another launcher (adw, go, etc...) and uninstall rosie.apk

Request: Replace Sense phone.apk with Default Android

Hi, I was just wondering if it would be possible to replace the sense phone.apk with the default android one. I have s-off and root but I'm not sure if just switching the apk would break the phone?
Thanks in advance
You can't brick your phone. Install the default android launcher .apk, press the home button, select it. Then remove the stock launcher.
hey sorry not the launcher apk i mean the call one that pops up when you are in a call. It has a white background and a picture of a green android thing with the name or number of the person you are calling.
Ive heard that this is the phone.apk but it is tied into more than just the dialer app so replacing it could have bad effects on the phone.
As far as I know that phone.apk does not exits. Its included in the launcher. And at a second thought, I believe that that dialer would pop up in potrait mode, not in landscape so you would rotate your phone to see the number. Try the free launchers avaible in Android Market.

hello, the launcher has nothing to do with the dialer!!!
i use awd launcher but the dialer & contacs are still from the stock rom!
- Ahem, may I?
First of all the launcher is an application that represents a shell which displays your usability options. Let's make some comparisons as it's easier this way.
Imagine that your phone is a PC running Windows. Now, if you don't have the explorer.exe process running, which is a shell, you won't have the task bar, start button, icons on the desktop, can't access programs/games, etc. Your options are very limited and you cannot use almost any features, except the fact that since it's an OS based on different applications, the dialer screen will appear when receiving a phone call, alarm clock will be displayed and so on.
So basically you only need the Launcher to see the list of applications and to be able to run them. That's about it. The themes on the other hand, affect the icons, wallpaper and launcher's graphics. That's it.
Every other application has it's own graphics and appearance style.
*the text below is an assumption*
As for the screen you are trying to remove/clear, well that's a different problem. It might be the dialer application that has this screen and without the application you won't be able to dial any numbers and cause a various number of problems.
*the text above is an assumption*
- Thank you for your attention.
I think I will just have a go at replacing it and keep a backup in cwm in case something goes wrong. I'll let you guys know how it goes

Replacing it shouldn't break anything. Removing it, will.
Gave it a go by replacing the sense phone.apk with the one from cm7 in the zasa build but all it did was create a force close loop.

[Q] Auto-Rotate not working for Android screens

I just started using my first Android phone 2 days ago, so this is probably a really dumb question, but I've figured almost everything else out and this one not so intuitive.
When I'm in the home screen or the alphabetical list of all apps, if I turn the phone horizontal it won't switch to landscape. It only rotates if I open the keyboard. The settings menu and most apps auto-rotate fine, so I know the phone can sense it right., it's just the basic Android screens that won't landscape unless the keyboard is open.
I'm using CM11 from 21-OCT-2014 and the only extras I've installed are gapps, k9 mail, firefox, google translate and google wallet. The "Auto-rotate screen" box is checked, as are the "0 degrees" and "90 degrees" rotation mode boxes.

Probably depends on the launcher (home screens and app drawer is handled by launcher). Some have a setting to enable it, some don't...
I dunno if this is normal behavior, something I can change in a setting, or a bug in something, and if so what?
Not quite sure what a launcher is, but I only installed the stuff I mentioned before, so I assume my launcher is whatever comes with CM11 or Gapps.

Done, and it worked! Thanks much. Any explanation as to why editing a system file was necessary to do something that seems to me should be automatic? Will I have to do this again after updates or anything?
(Of course nothing is simple the first time; took me over an hour to do this; figured easiest way would be from terminal, but had to find the file without a whereis command, then didn't know how to hit "ESC" when trying to edit with VI since there's no ESC key on our keyboard, finally found it in a menu, then wasn't able to save cuz readonly... tried again after su but same result, considered changing permissions but since I really didn't know what I was doing, did a web search, found a tutorial for editing it with ES file manager, which I installed, but the 2-year old tutorial had different menu structure for putting ES into "root explorer" mode, but finally got it modifiedt, saved, rebooted).
And I still dunno what launcher I'm using. After posting I did some web searches earlier, seems CM has its own launcher (forgot name, something that sounded french), and GApps has a launcher, but I read the CM version of GApps (that I used) doesn't change the launcher, but I also read the launcher from GApps is the one that will pop up google now if you swipe on the side of the screen, and that keeps happening to me (by accident as I'm trying to figure out how to use this thing) so it seems I have the GApps launcher. I dunno.
My problem is solved as mentioned in previous post, just rambling as I'm trying to understand all this.
it's called trebuchet

Just upgraded CM to new version and had to do this again. Is there any way to make this more permanent?

Use a different launcher? Nova, GoLauncher, Apex, Aviate, etc... most should have options for this.
Is there no way to fix it permanently in the default launcher? I'd just rather not use too many add-ons unless truly needed, but am getting tired of looking up this thread every time I update CM so I can find the text I need to re-insert. I'm happy to figure out how to submit a real bug report but dunno if it's a CM issue or google issue or what...

There's no bug. This is by design.
If you don't like it, you can change the launcher or keep doing the build.prop hack.
Curious... why do you think it would have been purposely designed this way? I just assumed it was one of those things that worked right for some phones but not others or something.... There's already settings to turn off rotation (and to select which specific orientation to allow rotation), so if someone wanted it off for some reason they should be able to turn it off that way...
Either way, if it's not a bug report, then it's a feature request, either way I'd like to at least *try* to get it changed before I give up and try an alternative. I'd imagine the developer or whatever wouldn't want people switching to alternative launchers if there's something he could easily fix fix anyway. And I imagine since it's so easy to fix by editing that file, it can't be that hard to fix in the program or whatever, and since supported in other launchers it's not some system limitation or something...
Anyway just my thoughts. I'm still very thankful for being told the workaround, and I'll probably figure out how to write a shell script that adds that line for me so I can just run that after each update (instead of looking up this thread and manually editing a file on an annoying little device). But that only helps me, be better to get it fixed for everyone.

Android is all about choice, you've been given several workarounds which fix the problem.
Other than that, this is how the stock launcher in CM is designed. A lot of people don't want the home screen to rotate when the phone rotates, I'm one of them.
