LTE issues - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got the 5 for xmas and I love it. It was replacing my GS4 which is now in its box as a backup phone.
Loved that one to as well honestly.
Anyway Im on ATT in the US and it seems EVERY time I make or recieve a phone call my LTE drops to 3g or less then upon hanging up it will usually return.
A couple times all my data dropped and I had to go to airplane mode to restore it but that hasn't happened in a while.
I have a vid of it happening I sent to google support but their response is always "factory reset" and Im honestly tired of that.
I went through an issues with KITKAT and pixelations on my screen and reset was their response. After a reset and it was still happening they stopped contacting me back since I guess their center ran out of printed responses.

Here in the UK, the carrier EE got some bad press for doing this and its apparently normal as far as I know for LTE to drop down to 3G so it can handle the call.
Did this happen on your GS4? Is it a new thing or have you just not noticed it before?

I see you are in New Haven, i'm in Fairfield and the samething happens with AT&T for me as well.
This is however by design as LTE is only a DATA solution, not a VOICE option (yet - that comes with VoLTE which AT&T is doing in 2015 but we'll need new phones anyways). It's similar to HSPA+ being only for data so when you aren't using it the device should drop back to "3G" aka UMTS (idle mode) and WCDMA for voice calls.
I've never had the issue of it not coming back however, it sometimes takes a few minutes at most but in general it always switches back to LTE.

Ironically my GS4 did not do this, perhaps it knew it was on a call and just decided to lie to me.
Think I should call AT&T?
Funny over a week+ with google support and NO ONE could tell me this? THIS is why I come here

Downgrade to the 4.4 radio and should fix your data connection issues. If you do some searching around you will see its pretty common to have data connection issues with the 4.4.2 radio.

Do you know what radio is for 4.4? They want to exchange the device but I WOULD LOVE to prove to them this is a software bug and NOT hardware related as I have been telling them.

No biggy Ill try to check it out. Honestly if I know its not really a malfunction then Im fine with it. Im not having much electronics luck lately.
4.4 bugged out my 2012 nexus 7 and google could give a rats ass about that, my ouya is another story, and I think my TV or PS3 is dying a slow death.
If this is just how it works then Im fine with it.
thanks
I may still try it though since Im rooted. I can just take a backup image first.

Grey signal with x wont reconnect

I have this issue when im at work where i get crap att coverage where eventually from being low for so long and staying on wifi my phone signal goes to zero and a grey x shoes up above them.
This wouldnt be so bad but it wont reconnect with a reboot or airplane mode reset which means if i dont check my phone i get no calls or info.
Is this normal? Is there a fix?
Thanks

This is an old issue. I'm not sure when the fix happened or what ATT radio would fix it for you but there is a simple (ish) solution. Basically, whats happening is that when your phone loses signal for an extended period of time it shuts off the radio and then cannot restart it. Using NoBars will stop your phone's radio from dying like that and will just periodically poll for signal.
That will fix the issue but just to satisfy my own curiosity, on your SDcard are there a bunch of files called Radio Dump and then a bunch of numbers?
Sorry posted on my phone and didnt notice the grammar errors
Yes i have the radio dump files but havent checked since installing the F1 radio.
I will try that app since this issue has followed me on multiple roms and radios
If there was a fix i havent gotten it
Thanks man
Edit
Just installed nobars but realized its a battery saver like juice defender
I will keep my hopes up tho
This ONLY happns when at my desk at work where att has no dark hold on me

you could try manually resetting your radio if that is actually the problem. just dial *#*#4636#*#* next time you're at your desk and go to phone information. if you scroll down it should say either turn off radio or turn on radio. try turning it on if it's already off, or resetting it by turning it off and then on again. I don't think this would be a permanent fix though. just a temporary solution when the problem arises.

Nobars will shut off your radio and stop it from dying. Trust me it works. My wife and I used it foe months waiting for the issue to be resolved. The radio dumps mean you're having the same issue.

I actually go into the carrier menu when i install a new radio anyway. Going in and out of airplane mode resets the radio but the problem is if I dont actually look at my phone (in my pocket) i wont know the radio shut off and can go through the day without getting any contact. I know its not the rom cause Im on stock. I know its not the radio cause I have tried about every one.
Its got to be a mix of crappy ATT service (which makes me wonder if resigning was worth this phone for free) and the nexus s hardware.
I am seeing if noBars will help. You would think this would be something google would fix ASAP tho as its happened since day one almost.

It is odd since this was a massive issue from day one of the Nexus S but that was before any of the other variants and it was fixed before any of the other variants launched. Since that fix, I've not heard of anyone having the issue any more with any variant. Part of the issue for my wife and I was that we lived in an area where there was really no good cell coverage from any company, so we stayed with T-Mo in spite of that knowing that we were moving soon to an area with great T-mo coverage, but being out of service so much resulted in similar issues as you've had: we would be constantly restarting our phones to see if there was anything we were missing. I do believe this will work for you, and I hope you find a permanent solution soon.
Thanks for the tip but i guess i am the lucky guy who still has the issue lol
Maybe hardware related? I will see what ice cs brings me
For today nobars helped but i did notice some batt drain from it but very minimal so its a keeper for now

Is my nexus s broken

So the past few days i have been dealing with an issue where my signal bars go grey/green constantly and its depleting my battery like crazy. When on wifi it seems fine but on data it is very irregular.
I just did a restore to an earlier bakcup i had and it still seems to do it. It did end up downloading all the updates since then, which could have screwed it up but i cant be sure.
Anyone else having this issue. I was going to restore but cant find a 2.3.6 rom.
any help is appreciated. Im wondering if the internal data modem is screwed up.

most likely its your providers fault. sounds like you are getting a pretty unreliable data connection. which, will deplete your battery quickly. check with your provider to see if they are having issues in your area.
i would think tho if it was my provider there would be SOMEONE else here with the problem. im in new haven CT. Ive tried restoring to 2 differant backups now, one waaaaaaaaaaaay back and it does it.
i will call to find out
thanks
quick question if they say to swap the phone then do i have to restore to stock unrooted? i dont feel like dealing with their BS right before ICS....
Restoring to stock on the nexus s is one of the easiest process of ANY phone. Install the stock zip and fast boot OEM lock. How is that BS or hard?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
i didnt mean restoring was BS i just meant dealing with ATT in general and questioning whether im rooted.
they would question a JB iphone everytime.

dont you need yoru background data on to get your emails and such?
Anyway tho I oddly fixed it or ATT repaired something at EXACTLY the same time.
I decided to go into my google market account to see if it saw my phone.
It did but had it as un named device, which it always has. I named the phone and then BAM havent had an issue since. This was the other day now.
Maybe google implemented something where you should name your device, i dunno maybe im special. This seems to have taken care of the issue. I checked background data before this tho and it all looked good.

Anybody still having data issues?

I've been using my Rogers HOX ever since it came out but always had random data drops. Tried all kinds of radios (with or without RIL) and all kinds of roms and the issue is still there. Losing data is not the biggest issue but it also drops the battery real quick because it keeps trying to connect.
Anybody ever find a solution to this?
I'm using the HOX on Straight Talk and lately I have noticed that when I have WiFi on for a while, assuming it stays connected, I lose mobile data. The only thing that bring it back is toggling airplane mode or rebooting the phone.
I am on Jellybean, and I am not sure if the issue was present in the stock ROM's.
Yep still having the same problem on AT&T with every combination of Kernel/ROM/Radio you can think of. I can also say that it isn't a "rooted only" problem because a coworker is having the same issues on 100% stock software. There's always that ONE THING that keeps my phone experiences from being perfect. Grrrrrrrr........

Stock 2.20 on Straight Talk. Have to toggle Airplane occasionally. Especially in North Little Rock. ::shrugs::
OP, have you restored your stock setup to see if the issue persists? Basic question, but for the sake of a starting point.
After so long, finaly found the problem. I don't know if it'll be the same for everyone but the problem was Swiftkey keyboard. The moment I uninstalled it, the problem did not reoccur.
I have the same problem and I can assure you its not the phone, I have used many android phones, iPhones, and regular phones on rogers 3G network and they all have the data drops in general like dropping to 1 bar and no service once and while.
You might want to switch your network to wcdma/gsm instead of wcdma/gsm/LTE. If you dont have the correct APN for the rogers lte network it will keep searching for the lte nrtwork causing the data drop. As soon as I turned my lte toggle off the network stopped dropping randomly though I still get those random data drops caused by the network

We had this issue with the rezound, it actually occurred because you flashed different radios.
You had to flash a ruu or a modified one without the system image. See my SIG
So try flashing a ruu, this doesn't explain someone with a stock phone having issues but I bet that's just tower issues
I don't have any of these issues

Tried all of the listed solutions and nothing worked. I know it's not the network because I don't have the problem with my Note II. Swiftkey was the issue for me, once removed, the issue never reoccurred.

Wow, you might be onto something here. I just installed SwiftKey last night and immediately started having issues. Data has been off-and-on with different versions of different ROMs, and never suspected that my issues may lie within an app that I was using. I was mucking about with radio ROMs and a million other settings, never realizing that SwiftKey was installed right around the time I started having issues on each ROM.
I'm going to jump back to CM10 this evening and see if this was my issue.
THANK YOU in advance! (Thanks button has been hit!) Nice work!
You gotta be sh***ing me! After all this time scouring xda and numerous other sites.starting my own tread it was SwiftKey all along? Wtf? I did a thousand different things. Nothing worked, took off Swiftkey, bam, flawless. I've got a T-mobile GS3 incase anyway was wondering, no, apparently it's not just with htc or AT&T/Rodgers. Weird though cuz my wife has a AT&T GS3 with Swiftkey and has no issues whatsoever... Did you dl your version from the playstore or from a 3rd party? Thanks a million for posting your solution. This was absolutely killing me. God do I hate this stock keyboard though...

Issues with my skyrocket (used)

Guess i should start from the top here..
i purchased the phone used from a friend, the phone was having issues with crashing and locking up,
as well as constant signal loss/and wifi was also causing crashing (gingerbread 2.3.5)
so i flashed CM10.1.3 stable it's no longer random crashing, Wifi is still causing reboots(but no more locking up after booting)
tried flashing a radio for it to fix the signal problems, and no dice.
could this be in the hardware since the radio didn't seem to do crap
On Monday I'm going to try and beat a refund out of my friend for selling me a faulty phone
so if i can't get it fixed by then it's not my problem any more
update: I flashed "AT&T 2.3.6 OTA Update Radio I727ATTKK1" it actually fixed my wifi, but now i'm getting no signal at all, attempted to make a phone call and it just says "Mobile network not available"

Might as well check your APN while your at it. Is it set to wap.cingular or pta? Settings>Wireless & Networks More>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names. Which ever one it's set to change it to the other and see if the issue persists.

Mobile Data Connection Dropping

I have installed ViperOne and Clean Rom and I have the same problem with both. After a while of inactivity my data will just quit working. Oh and I have also done factory resets between each Rom install so everything was clean when it was flashed.

In essence santod says: flash the stock recovery, do a factory reset from hboot to restore the VZW radios, then restore your setup. Should work with most sense roms, but so far the people solving this issue all flashed a RUU.
Anybody have a link handy for the stock recovery?

Stock Recovery: Link :good:
You can find that and my firmware links in this thread.
Did the stock recovery so far so good but I won't know for sure until I get out and about today. It seems I didn't have the issue until it dropped from 4g to 3g back to 4g and have a decent 4g signal at home.
For now it seems as though that did the trick. I didn't loose data all day, we will see though.
Well it didn't work, I had to toggle airplane mode several times today to get data to work again.

Are you going to RUU?
That's what I plan to do tomorrow. It's getting to be extremely annoying. Not even toggling airplane mode or mobile data on/off does anything. I have to reboot every time.

RUU'd, stock recovery, flashed radios, and new SIM. I've tried everything. It seems as though if I'm in a low signal area where I go from 4g to 3g to Wi-Fi it happens. It's like there's a handoff problem between all the radios. Will show 4 bars of 4g but under mobile data in settings says disconnected.
Mine just started doing this. I'll RUU when I get back home to Texas.

I can confirm that it did fixed the issue, I didn't loose data all day no matter if wifi, 4g,3g, or 1x,
Same here. In the last 5 days I travelled in 3 states, large cities and very rural areas where it dropped to 3G or 1x - it never had problems to return to 4G (or getting a data connection at all).
This fix proves what's so great about these forums! I probably would have ditched a phone I totally love in all other aspects due to a problem that OEM customer service would not even acknowledge existed!
