Is there still any difference between TW and AOSP signal/reception? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I thought all the data issues on AOSP/CM were fixed. While I was on vacation, my phone (running SlimRom) showed 'mobile network disconnected' and had no data, while other people running Verizon (other Galaxy phones, iPhone) had no problems at all. Tried to switch airplane on/off, reboot etc, nothing worked.
So I'm starting to think a TW based rom might give better data?

TW based roms will always provide better reception then AOSP. This is due to the fact that the radio software for the S3 is closed source, so in order to get it to work we had to backwards engineer the radio software so that it will pick up signal from the network.

[Q] Radio disconnects!

Here is whats happening! I go into an awful area with no cell service and when i return into an area with good service... It shows all my bars, 3G icon, but its all grayed out and will not return with color... Also i have no data connectivity at all. The only way to resolve this problem is a reboot. I have the Nexus s 4G KL1 radio... This has happened twice in 2 days. Can anybody tell me what this could be? I tried the KL2 radio and the same thing happened. So I went back to KL1. I am running Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable. Any help would be appreciated, I like this phone and dont want to have to go back to my slow Evo.
Happens on ICS ROMs. I switched back to GB because of that issue.
OHHH ok that makes sense since i was on an ics rom... That sux i love the ics roms to. Is this an issue they know about and are working on?
Yes I am sure the devs know about this issue. A lot of people already reported this issue on the ROM's threads. I think there was a fix in the CM9 repositories that was merged this week.
well thats good news since were i live its not good service and im in and out of service a lot. Thanks for chiming in and letting me know! I was wondering if i had a bad radio or some thing lol...
This happens to my I9020T as well (with stock ICS, Pixel ROM, and Brainmaster's Stock and MIUI ICS ROMs). So, it's definitely an ICS issue. My network connection won't reconnect after I ride the subway (underground, where there's no signal) for about an hour. The only way to fix it is by doing a reboot (enabling and disabling Airplane mode doesn't fix it).
I just tried switching radios: from KI1 to KF1. I'll update on the result later tonight.
Sounds like exactly what happened to me.
I went back to gingerbread. I haven't had the issue since!
Just out of curiosity have you tried the KL2 radio with CM9/Latest nightly and then toggle your Data Enabled or the data roaming? If that works it might save you the reboot. Settings, wireless & Networks/more, Mobile networks, Data enabled.
You could try toggling the data roaming too.
Yup tried it already

Ok it was worth a shot. When I travel to the UP, I get no data service what so ever. So I feel your pain.

I've tried enabling-disabling Data as well, and it doesn't fix it.
The weird thing is the same issue happened to my girlfriend's T-Mobile G2 with Gingerbread last week, when I unchecked the "Use only 2G network" setting on her phone and forgot to check it back. So, when she told me the issue when she got home, I re-enabled the "Use only 2G network" setting again, and her phone haven't had the reconnect issue ever since.
So, my speculation right now is this reconnect to network failure issue has something to do with the Nexus S' 3G/4G network type setting.
I definitely think you're right
I am having somewhat the same problem.
My phone keeps switching from UMTS:3 to HSDPA and back to UMTS:3
This is draining the hell out of my battery. But when I have it on EDGE 2G I'm getting good battery life.
the issue is not that big for me. I just give it a few moments with it in sleep and when I go to use it again it fixes its self.

Update!!!! I have since switch off of the I c s rom. I have not had the incident happen even 1 time since doing so. I am totally convinced it's on ice cream sandwich roms.

I doubt the radio would make a difference. I think the issue lies in the Phone application.
I could be misinformed here, but if i recall correctly, our phones radio is relatively stupid as far as radios go, and the intelligent parts are actually done as a part of the phone application. This only applies to CDMA Variants of the Nexus S, but it could be the reason that the ICS update was pulled (As thats where CM and others get the ICS version of the phone app.).
After taking the subway for about an hour last night, my NS actually reconnected when I got back up to ground level. One thing that I didn't do is listen to music (PowerAmp); I was always listening to music when I had those network reconnect issues.
Anyway, I hope this issue gets fixed in the upcoming official Google ICS update, that should be released in a few weeks*.
I've found that if you just stick it in airplane mode when you are about to go into known no service area and then take it out of ap mode when you know you have a signal you can save from having to reboot to reconnect.
My building at work is a tomb for sprints signal and it works for me every day w/o rebooting ...
To all of you having network reconnect issues -- do you use any battery saving apps, like JuideDefender or GreenPower? I use one, and I'm thinking that its network toggling internal API method has something to do with this issue.
Yesterday, I disabled my GreenPower app right before I took the subway, in which my NS couldn't receive any network signal for about an hour. Then, when I went back up to ground level my NS was able to reconnect to my network successfully.
I'll do the same test later after work and update back tonight.

AOSP ROMS, k3 basband, VZW network extender

I just thought I would shed some light on an issue I've had since leaked jb Verizon modems came around. I am the owner of a vzw network extender. Whenever I am running any asop ROM, when I connect to the extender, my gs3 says I'm roaming. From cm10/10.1 to aokp to eclipse jb, This happens on every asop ROM I've tried. The only fix is to run an ICS modem. Also I have no issues using the k3 baseband with any tw based roms. I believe this has to do with the way the jb modems report being connected to the extender on a tw based rom. With the jb modem, the tw based roms tell you that you are connected to the extender. It says network extender in place of Verizon wireless on the pulldown and also the signal bars have a little home above it. This was new to jb. On an asop ROM I get roaming and an r in place of the home on the signal bars. Is it possible that asop ROMs have not caught up yet, being that not too many people have a signal extender? And feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't been hearing about this issue as not many people have network extenders. I don't think any of the AOSP ROM developers have been working on a fix for it. Thank you for bringing it up in the mean time to take full advantage of your network extender you will have to use the Touchwiz roms.
Thanks for the reply. Is there any better way to get the word out to aosp ROM developers about this issue?
Other than the development thread and PM that is it.
Bringing this back, any fix for this problem yet? =/
Same problem
I am having the same problem running a Galaxy S4 with CM 10.1. I own a Network Extender at my business, and my phone shows the "R" over the bars and out of network in the detail area. In fact, I can not send Text Messages When the extender is on, even though I am connected through our company WIFI as well. What is the best way to change your modem, Odin? If so, where do you download the old modem software? Thanks!
TW Roms
I have only been using TW based roms because of this issue. I thank you all for posting this information here about the network extender issue. The good news is that all TWQ roms I have tried so far are working for my Network Extender except for Jedi so far on the Verizon network.

Always roaming

Hi, since I got my Galaxy s3, I'm always roaming. I didn't have to stray too far away from the store before the roaming started to happen. It seems that if I do not have 3g, or 4g I'm constantly roaming. I have read on here that there is a way to fix the always roaming issue, but I didn't know if it applied to flashing a bad rom and then getting the always on roaming message. Mine has been like this since day 1 when I bought the phone at completely stock settings. I recently flashed CleanROM, and still have the always on roaming messages.
Should I attempt to use this application, or would I risk doing something terrible to the phone?
what prl do you have? any just to make sure what carrier?
Different prl's can cause it to roam. You may can pull battery and sim and sdcard, wait 30 sec or so reinstall any boot. Then check prl again, see if it changes.
See the Galaxy sIII shine via SynergyRom
What is PRL? I do have Verizon. .. I also have a nationwide plan, so I know for certain I'm not being charged for roaming, it just shows that I am all the time.
"HOME-ONLY roam setting on touch wiz roms like on CM based roms
New to posting on here, so be patient... I have been flashing roms however since the Motorola droid 1 and love the mods we can do to our phones. Now I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, flashed to CleanRom, newest version as of this date. I love the battery life on this Rom but work near the Mexican border where it easily switches to roaming. My question is that on CM roms I'm able to go into roaming settings and select either Automatic (default) or Home Only which will prevent anything but a Verizon signal. Works awesome. I don't know why this is unique to CM or AOSP roms and not touch wiz. Is there a way we can have that added or even an app that will do that very thing? Sometimes I have to just backup my rom and flash CM just to use my phone without roaming on to the Mexican cell tower. It's very frustrating. Thanks for any advice.
If this needs to be in its own thread, could someone let me know and help me out with that?
Thanks, Scott.

[Q] All CM versions - dodgy 3g and stuttering during calls

I've tried CM 7, 10.1 and 10.2 on my Galaxy S 4G (SGH-T959V).
I invariably get this problem where during calls, the audio cuts in and out (approx. every second word in a conversation is lost). Sometimes there's no sound at all, and I've had incoming calls not get through too.
Also, there are problems with 3g. Typically it doesn't work at all (on CM 10.2 it does work sometimes), and the only way to get mobile internet working is to enable the "Use only 2g networks" option in the Android settings.
In CM versions prior to 10.2, I wouldn't even be able to see any of my APNs in the list, or be able to add any, unless I had selected this 2g option, at which point they would magically re-appear. in CM 10.2 I am able to have APNs in the list and 3g works for a while, but then stops working. Needless to say, I've been double-checking my APN settings.
I've also tried a bunch of different modems, but it makes little or no difference. I got the modems from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436
Any suggestions? I take it that the behaviour I'm experiencing is not normal?
Seems like the radio of your phone is messed up since you've tried many modems and ROMs. Did you get good signals on stock GB?
Yes, confusingly I've got no problems at all on stock roms of Android 2.1.1 and 2.3.6. I've switched between these and CM many times, and the behaviour is completely consistent - calls and 3g are dodgy on CM and fine on the stock roms.
Anything else I can try? I'm in New Zealand, and the phone is imported from Korea I think. It's branded T-Mobile, and is a SGH-T959V.
No ideas? Other people aren't experiencing this same problem though, right?

none here....sorry!
It's a weird problem for sure. I would guess hardware, or a sim card issue. Maybe it's just bad service. Not many people would know if the problem were specific to New Zealand.

[Q] Please help AOSP Roms Roaming on Network Extender

I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 on Verizon's Network .I"m on a Verizon network extender at home and everytime I've installed any AOSP ROMs (Cyonogen Mod,Paranoid Android,Carbon ,Pacman etc,) my phone goes into roaming ,so I don't have a data connection or a phone connection, in my home with any of these ROM's. Outside of the network extender, the ROM's work. Currently I"m running Touchwiz Rom Jellybeans version 19. Stock or any Touchwiz ROM's work when I"m on the network extender. I've searched for a solution and have found none. I have owned my Galaxy S3 for over a year and haven't been able to run any of these ROM's because of the network extender issues. It's been very frustrating ,can someone please help with the situation?

I have to use a network extender at home as well. It's an older version so it doesn't handle data. I've used it on both TW and AOSP Roms without a problem, so what you have should work.
On AOSP roms, do you get the two tone note when you try to call? You should only need to dial #48 to register with it and then call out.

There are two different network extender models. On the older one, there is no data connection. The newer one offers 3G as well as voice I believe. So if you're on the older model you won't have network data and will have to rely on wifi. When you dial out, if you hear 2 tones before it begins to ring, then you're operating off the extender.
As long as you're on a stable version of a ROM, it shouldn't have any significant impact. I've used several TW and AOSP roms without noticing any real difference.

Hi, thank you for responding ,I appreciate you taking the time to answer. I've checked with Verizon and I"m on the newer network extender .On stock or Touchwiz ROM"s I do get a phone connection and 3G. I also get the the two tones when I dial a number before it connects. From what was explained to me that means I"m under the network extender. When I dial # 48 on an AOSP or TW ROM, it tells me that I'm under the network extender's connection.
95% of the ROM's I've used have been stable. The others have been Cyonogen Mod nightly's . On my Droid Razor Maxx, when running and AOSP ROM, I never had these issues.

No, I've gone into mobile networks and changed it manually, rebooted and the "R" for roaming as shown in the photos is still there. I've manually forced it into 3g only and it remains the same. No data connection

Update: Currently I am running an AOSP Rom (CM 10.2 09-19-2013) and it's working. To get it to work, I installed the last ICS OTA modem (the VRLHE) and I am now getting data at home under the network extender. No more "R" for roaming! The modem is not as strong as the Jelly Bean VRBMF1 modem, but it's working. I still can't get any AOSP roms to work on JB modems and I don't know why. I was thinking of contacting the CM team for a possible solution. I am still glad it's working even though it's on an old radio.
I had the same issue two days ago when I flashed to the latest MIUI Rom. Here's how I fixed it.
Go into settings, mobile networks, make sure subscription is set to SIM. After that open the phone, type *#*#4636#*#* make sure it's set to LTE/CDMA/AUTO
Reboot phone and all should be well.

ok, so those with verizon network extenders, are you having issues connecting? I actually am, and want to make sure its not my phone.
