Nexus 5 screen repair questions. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have any idea why a glass only option hasn't become available for the N5 yet? I know it took a while for other parts suppliers to come up with aftermarket digitizers for the N4, due to having the touch sensor overlay attached to it. But the N5 is nice enough not to be built that way, so if you break the glass, the touch screen still works.
Now I haven't seperated a lens yet, but I assume it's like an S3 or S4, and the touch imput is built onto the lcd panel. That should mean a relatively cheap glass only replacement option should be doable.
Can anyone correct me if I'm wrong? I've got a broken N5 and a working N5, but I've had too much fun testing roms on the broken one to want to do the seperation yet, so maybe the stack up prevents a glass only replacement. But I've delaminated N4s, G2s, S3s, and S4s, and replaced just glass/digitizers only, so I know the difficult process for doing it, and that it should be possible.

[Q] One S Touch Screen/Digitizer Replacement

Hello all I hope someone here can guide me because I am at a loss.
A couple weeks ago I cracked my screen and have been searching for a replacement
Digitizer since then but everywhere I look is either out of stock or comes with the
LCD (which I don't need ).
I know this is a bit forward for my first post here but I am hoping someone
may have a suggestion as to where I might be able to pick one up so I can finally get my phone back to it's
original glory.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions on this matter.
In htc digitzer and screen are unity, so if you have problem with touch, you have to change all screen.

From what I have read the glass and the digitizer are one piece but it is possible to separate the LCD in this guide :
androidforums. com/htc-one-s/609247-how-fix-htc-one-s-screen.html
Problem is every website I have looked at the glass/digitizer is out of stock and it's triple the price to get it with the LCD.
you can't separate, because in amoled all layer are connected in fabric.
http://www.oled-display.net/wp-content/uploads/u2/super-amoled-technical-details.jpg See this pictrue the touch sensor is under glasses.
i repair phones for a living. and i'm telling you, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE APART THE DIGITIZER AND LED!!! most new htc phones, like the iphone 4/4s and newer samsung phones the glass and display come together. yes, it is possible to take them apart, it's more hassle then it's worth, you are almost guaranteed to break your display (unless you've done it a few dozen times) and then when you try to put everything back together, it will not fit together right because the LED will be warped by your pulling and bending it out of the frame. also, any part you see sold as just the digitizer is either not the correct part and even if it fits and works it is not OEM

I appreciate you taking the time to clarify that for me, I had hoped it would have been easier than that. I can start looking for the correct part now and finally get my phone sorted out.
Again thanks for your help.

[Q] Has anyone bought a replacement screen yet?

I dropped my Moto G a few weeks into owning it and destroyed the front glass. First phone that I have broken the glass on and I was very disappointed.
Starting looking around at options of fixing it. Thought I would try just changing the glass since the screen was fine and the digitizer still worked. After watching several tutorials I decided that this was a bad idea. Thought about getting just the screen, but it still seemed like a lot of work.
Then I came across an entire replacement front housing HERE.
Has anyone bought something like this? It seems like it would be super easy to replace.
I do think it should be very easy to replace. You can find an even cheaper one here : http://www.ebay.com/itm/271508770936?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
As to changing only the glass, as you mentioned yourself it looks quite difficult indeed, since you need to separate the two layers. I wouldn't try it myself.

I have bought 2 so far, with the front housing. Those are the best option since they are super easy to replace, unlike the digitizer only (which is also harder to find). The 3rd option is glass+screen assembly but that is the same as replacing the digitizer itself so ye.Also the Moto G has its plastic around the glass sticking up a bit for protection, which makes the replacement of that xtra hard (you can literally ruin the frame even if you done that multiple times on different phones). Also you are safe of getting dust between the glass and the display (which is very annoying).
When you get digitizer+display+frame, you`re esentially saving yourself shidload of trouble and avoiding all that I've mentioned above. There are only 2 things you need to move on --> the earphone and the microphone (depends on the revision of the board).

How is the quality on those? I am not expecting it to be OEM of course. I wonder if these have gorilla glass

The quality of the ones I bought is great.I'm not sure if the glass is Gorilla Glass but it feels like the original and the plastic is virtually the same. They could be OEM, cos they fit too damn good with everything else, although I (nor the seller) don't claim that they are.For the price (~40 usd) that I buy em for I'm totally satisified.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Ordered one of these about a week ago hoping for it to show up soon .
I'll make sure to update everyone when I get it and it is installed.
Well i got the screen in today and it looks identical. Sadly the tools that they provided are not the right Torx size for the phone.
Got the new screen installed after a trip to the store to get a Torx set. It looks and feels like the original one. Changing it out was incredibly easy as well.

[Q] Nexus 5 screen swap - replacement digitizer won't recognize touch

I purchased this replacement Screen/Digitizer/Frame assembly for the Nexus 5 after dropping my phone and cracking the glass front. While the glass was cracked, the digitizer and screen work fine and I can use the phone as-is apart from the shards of broken glass all over the touch surface.
When I received the part, I disassembled my phone (with much help from this guide), swapped over the parts to the new housing, hooked everything up, and the digitizer doesn't recognize any touches on the screen. I went around a couple cycles of swapping parts back into my broken phone and everything works like it should. Swap back, no touch.
I figured this must just be a defective unit, so I returned the parts and ordered another. I swapped everything into the new frame and I get the same result - screen works, digitizer doesn't.
I'm willing to accept that I'm doing something terribly wrong here. What troubles me is that every time I switch back to my existing phone screen, everything works like it should. If I was somehow plugging things in wrong or assembling the unit incorrectly I'd expect that it would apply to my existing screen too. At this point I've disassembled my phone, swapped the innards to the replacement screen, then swapped everything back 5 or 6 times now. Each time I do this, my existing screen works and the replacement screen won't register touch. As such, I find it hard to believe that I'm just assembling things wrong because somehow it works every time I put the old parts in, but never works with the new screen.
Does anyone here have any experience with screen swaps? The whole thing is really a straightforward procedure and there's not much to goof up that I can see. Does it even seem possible I could have received 2 screen assemblies with non-working digitizers?
Judging by the reviews, stay away
Looks non-oem as well lol
Most of the negative reviews there look to be fit issues. There are a number of little adhesive pads and rubbery bits that need to transfer over from the existing frame, and I strongly suspect that the people complaining about light leaks or fit issues probably didn't notice that the replacement part didn't include all those bits. None of the reviews that I read mention any problem with touch not working.
Exchange
I sent the vendor an email similar to my OP to see what they say, but I paid extra to get the Amazon Prime vendor on this part so returning it (again) should be no problem. I'll give them a chance to figure this out, but if not, maybe third time's a charm?

[Q] Surface Pro 3 Digitizer Replacement Versions?

Hello everyone,
So I recently took apart my surface pro3 because my digitizer took a dump after a very short fall off my desk onto carpet (along with the glass). I know that the digitizers have different versions, However, I cant seem to be able to source a new LCD/Digitizer combo.
Anyone try to use different version digitizer/LCD combos from their "versions"?

Was curious about this as well. Trying to see if purchasing a cracked SP3 and replacing the LCD myself would be worth it. So far I haven't seen any info on version differences and compatibility.
ok, i will start of with the TLDR part because this is going to be quite long.
TLDR: 99% chance your tablet uses a v1.1 touchscreen digitizer, it will not work with anything else don't even try.
Explanation.
I purchased quite a few surface pro 3s (6 units) in the hope that I could get it fixed, I'll share my findings here.
Chassis
The magnesium alloy frame bends when you drop it, durable my ass, because the magnesium alloy has a low compression yield stress (I'd cite it but I don't have outside link privileges). Because the tolerances are so god damn tight, any bend is likely to prevent installation of a LCD because it will no longer fit. It's possible to get round this by bending it back (hard) or cutting the excess metal (harder) but chances are you need to to both to even get a decent result. But even then it'll never be the same.
Frankly I suspect its the same for all magnesium (or any metal framed) device, but on all the metal devices I've owned/fixed/refurbed it's the most pronounced on magnesium frames.
LCD
Don't let the LCD dealers lie to you, not all the LCDs are the same. For a while on eBay (the November to January period) it was flooded with SP3 LCD assemblies. Unfortunately I have no idea what bin they dug it out from but the LCDs attached to those were a slightly different make and were defective. It would not run on the original resolution, it had to be run at a lower resolution or else the picture would freeze (the initial image would stop refreshing) and I suspect something was defective on the LCD controller side.
Touchscreen
Interestingly enough the first unit I bought actually kind of worked. The touch was completely functional but there was issues with ghost touches. The other 4 units I purchased were lemons (don't buy the one from Shenzhen Saul E-tech on Ali-express) , the only other person who left a review on the D***s S is actually selling his unit on eBay right now! I was talking to him and it works differently for him as well, touch only functions after the unit has been on for a few mins.
What happens when you install the LCD assembly for the first time is that the SP3 detects it and installs whatever drivers it needs to (8? items) but it will not function properly.
I suspect there are 2 possibilities right now:
1. anything below v1.0 (I suspect this is the version at release, if you look on iFixit's teardown this is the version they have) is a prototype/ non functional.
The Chinese people dug all the v0.1,0.3,v0.5 screens out of a bin somewhere and decided to flog it to the rest of the world. Heck, some of the units I purchased looked like they were laminated separately from the digitizer (it had OCA stains all over the back and very poor quality control like dark spots and light-spots on the LCD). That means that anything below v1.0 is inherently faulty which kind of fits in line with my experiences with finding different faults across multiple units.
2. I works but requires calibration.
Apparently nTrig has a calibration tool ( I tried it, doesn't work) but maybe the touchscreen is registering input but needs to calibration to accept the signal (or reject noise signals)
right now your best bet is to pay microsoft to fix/replace it.
The LCD ranges from 200(avoid these ones)-300 bucks.
Apparently replacement is 300-320, go figure.
Any Update ?
Just wondering if anyone had an update or GOOD part number for the SP3 Screen and Digitizer ?
Thanks !!

thanks!, It makes me sad that people are buying $500 LCDs because microsoft really does charge $300 to replace the entire unit. Also the wholesale price for those thigns are like $160 in china so seriously what the F**K
Must you replace the entire thing (like the LCD and the glass screen on top) or can you just replace the glass screen on top? I heard that LCD screens are very expensive while the glass screen is much cheaper, my surface pro 3 recently broke. You can use the mouse and everything except for the touch screen. I need the touch screen desperately as I use it frequently for educational purposes. I don't want to pay $300 just for the touch screen, is there any other way I can get the screen repaired at a cheaper price?

unfortunately no, you do have to replace the whole thing the glass and digitizer is one unit, does not come separately.
Today Microsoft asks for 450 euro to replace the surface!
Microsoft just asked me to pay $577 (Canadian) to replace my device after I cracked the screen. I can just buy a used one for less money since I had the i3 version.
Same price for i3\i5\i7....kind of weird.
Anybody had a price in the UK? I dropped my SP3 i5 from about a foot WITH a foam cover on, and it hit the floor square on the corner denting the metal, smashing the corner glass, and a crack across the screen. I managed to boot and disabled the touch in windows, but I cannot get past the Surface logo on boot. I have to go into the secure boot menu with volume + / power then when I exit it will boot... any other combination and it just hangs at the surface logo.
Same same, £350 I guess to exchange, £350 for a second hand unit on eBay. Shame I cannot trade in....

I have the exact same issue. When I boot it gets stuck so I press Ctrl + alt + Delete and it tries again. I normally takes 2 or 3 tries before it boots. Please let me know if you have any luck on finding a place to get it repaired.
Instead of buying a screen for that much, you could simply get your device fixed by a 3rd party like RxTech Repair. They do the repair for $377 which includes free return shipping back to you.

Why do some touch screens work with cracked glass whilst others dont?

Why do some touch screens work with cracked glass whilst others don't?
For example, recent Sony phones seem to be notorious for having screens that become completely non functional once the glass is cracked.
I have a cracked HTC, IPhone and Samsung. The touch/screen on these all work perfectly fine even though the glass is completely shattered.
Why is this? Is it poorer quality components or something got to do with how the screen assembly is put together? I thought all phones with 'ogs' displays have glass -> digitizer -> screen so don't see how this could be possible. Anyone know the answer? I think having a phone which becomes completely nonfunctional once cracked is a big downside.

Most probably, if you slip your phone, there are 2 possibilties:
1. Only the screen glass breaks and digitizer is safe (Broken screen doesn't mean touch won't work).
2. The bump caused on screen damages both screen and Digitizer too, which causes touch feedback not to work.
There are certain rare phones in which digitizer and glass screen are just a single component. Maybe just a drop of those phones could damage the whole screen+touch interface

I wouldn't call them rare. I know all new sony phones are like this If you search for 'cracked z3' or 'cracked z2' all will say touch not working. I'm sure there is many others too, Xiaomi mi3 and nexus 4 are others I can think of. I wonder if this is done on purpose so people will have to pay the extortionate repair costs? Many people would be okay using a phone with a small crack on its screen, especially if they've had it a while. But if the touch isn't working it is as useless as a brick.
It's a pretty big downside I think. I know someone who has been using a cracked iphone 4s for 2 years and has been re-cracked several times and its still fully functional.
