Removing Scratches

I have a quite a few scratches on the touch screen and also one on the home button, which is deeper. Most of the scratches on the touch screen are not very deep but theres alot of them. I was thinking of trying toothpaste but have been told that it could damage screen. Any suggestions?

there is a polish compound called Displex. This worked best for me on GameBoy, mobile phones and MP3 players.
Just look for it on ebay, should be as cheap as 1-2 Euros (about the same in $)

Hi thanks a lot for the reply Zuzler, are you sure it will work on a touch diamond? And have you tried it on anything touchscreen?

I tried Displex on my old htc tornado, and it didn't work very well for me.

i got HUGE scratches on my TD
the first day i got it there was a scratch on it.. before i could apply the screenprotector...
wish we could buy the front plastic for our TD/MDA, i once checked it out and the front is actually a 'screenprotector (just a piece of plastic with the black on the side ) ' too (at least mda) but if you rip it off you'll see all the bits inside i think.. so applying a fully transparent screenprotector over it would be ugly...

BRASSO is good. available in the UK and US. do not get into gaps.

Oh, I forgot to mention that:
I think someone around here already wrote that. Since Displex melts the top layer of the display, it might be useless for the Diamond display since it has not the typical plastic-surface. But as I can not confirm that, you might want to research it yourself.

I dont think I will risk testing the brasso, but many thanks for your help Also I have bought a screen protector now it should come in a week or two, I know its a bit late but do you think it will cover up the scratches?

If the scratches are not too deep and you polish the display with a non-fuzzing cloth before applying the protector you should get quite good results.

Back in the day when I had a iPod Video, i had heaps of scratches on the screen (brasso wouldn't work very well). I put on a screen protector and none of them could be seen anymore. Wouldn't have known there are scratches on it. I dunno if it would work on the Diamond but its worth a go.

I'll try, anyway: they are transparent and very thin plastic layers which often have a sticky compound on one side and you generally apply on the screen (and buttons like in the Diamond) of your phone. In this way you can scratch them but they prevent scratches on your screen.
They are amazing, and everybody should get one together with the new phone...
Obviously you have to purchase one before scratching the display.
I would say that this method could be called PREVENTION!

Well, my sofas came both with a cover, so I can wash them separately.

My nexus one screen cracked (after falling from 3 feet high) and I need a replacement for the digitizer. I've found this one on dealextreme but I don't know if it will work properly. Has anyone tried it?

I can't help you with the digitizer but the guitar pick should work fine, it'll just be more difficult.

it would be funny if this one is better than the stock one (ie no multitouch/calibration issues)

I have a hunch they are all the same, but please don't hold me to that.
I got the one from ebay, and it worked find with no calibration issues at all.
Note that this is not an easy swap at all. The way this thing is built is pretty incredible. I found someone who tore one down on youtube, and it was split into something like 30 separate videos, and used them to figure it out. I was so surprised and excited that it still worked when I was done that I nearly dropped it again
Note that the one that I got DID NOT come with adhesive. I had to fabricate my own using scotch double stick tape and a knife, and it wasnt perfect. When I was done it seemed to stick well, but there were a few places I could see the tape sticking out slightly, and I'm sure since the seal wasn't perfect that lint would have eventually worked its way inside.
(I ended up sending it off to HTC for an overheating issue and faulty lock button, and elected for the advance replacement, so I ended up with a shiny new phone minus the battery cover they made me keep)
I wish you luck in the repair, I hope you've got a light touch and some heavy patience.

have you tested that digitizer for the dreadful multitouch issues before sending it to htc?

It's so hit-and-miss,I just bought one replacement in lightake.com,I received it today,and I put it on my digitizer.

I bought one off ebay.. went w/a us seller "wholesalegadgetparts" so i could get it quickly the digitizer works fine
as far as adhesive to hold it to the "black frame" i used a 3M double stick tape (cut into very slim strips) that was fairly thin (if its to thick, it'll pop out beyond the aluminum frame when assembled) also used a drop or two of super glue on the top portion..
what sucked was after i got everything back together, my lcd went bad (guess i was mashing it a bit to hard when getting them to stick to the frame) so I bought one off ebay for around $50, seller was "smartlaptopparts" shipped from cali, so quick turn around, and did appear to be "oem"
screen is beautiful now, overall was very happy w/the purchases

Replacing digitizer...still gorilla glass?

I scratched up my screen (its really a small scratch but annoys me that its there), so now I plan on replacing it.
I've replace digitizers for friends phones before but the one thing I never thought about is whether or not these replacement, remanufactured digitizers are made using same gorilla glass that the original ones are made of. I'm sure they aren't OEM even though most of them say they are.
I would hate to replace my outside glass for one less durable because of one annoying blemish.

I bought a day one Sensation I've Dropped it from a 8foot Ladder.. screen never Scratched or Broken.. I had to get it Replaced because Dust got behind the Screen and now I phoned phone from about a foot off ground and it cracked.. I think they are even using normal glass again.. BS... Stick with Gorilla Glass

That really doesn't mean anything to be fair, drops are a crap shoot, there are about a million different ways a phone can hit the deck. Some survivable, some not, regardless of height.

its all the same, more or less.
No two panels will be the same, even if their both from HTC. Some might have undetectable imperfections that could have a nice place for a break to start.
I was somewhat unlucky with my first digitizer. It might have had an imperfection along the edge that allowed it to break
Real HTC glass: 3 foot drop - broken
Glass from amazon: 6 foot drop - still working

Anyone know a good site to purchase a glass replacement. I found on Amazon but it was shipping from Hong Kong, dont want to wait 3-4 weeks to find out its cheap glass.

Screen Protector vs Replacing the Glass

How expensive is it to replace the actual glass every 6 months or so? Obviously it will be more expensive than a screen protector, but you will benefit from a wonderful oleophobic surface with perfect clarity and sensitivity without any halo issues. To me that would be a good trade-off for a bit more cost. I do however want to know how much it would cost to replace the glass. Anyone has a clue?

You got to be kidding me. I never heard of somebody thinking like this. I would rather deal with a halo or screen protector than replacing the entire screen. That just seems foolish.

Yeah, you need to work a bit on your reading comprehension skills. I specifically said this is not about replacing the screen. I specifically said it is about replacing the glass which costs less than $25 on a Note 3.

I would rather risk the screen than live with a halo or other equally annoying visual impairment.
No way I'll put a screen protector on until the tempered glass ones actually fit right.

Guys let me repeat it again, I am not talking about replacing the screen for $300+ Obviously there is no comparison there.
I am talking about replacing the scratched gorilla glass which sits on top of the digitizer and the screen.
On the Note 3 this glass could be replaced for under $30 (which is not too much more than a good quality tempered glass protector).

Why would you need to replace it every 6 months? I had a phone littered with scratches and used it for two years and the scratches were only visible when the screen was off. I think once per 2 years is enough unless you have a lot of sand in your pocket.

Cost might be fine, but I'm not OK with opening my phone up and risk trapping dust or finger print under the glass. Not to mention gambling my device during the tear down process.

In my experience, it's not easy to replace the glass. Normally the digitizer and LCD comes glued together. They are made that way so less likely to get dusted between the LCD and digitizer; however, you can purchased separately but as mention, it's not an easy job to separate it. If you're not experienced in doing this, I wouldn't recommended it as it's very easy to crack the LCD. It's not cheap if you want to buy a LCD + Digitizer combo, you're looking at a $200-300+ for replacement.

It's not my comprehension it's my stupidity meter that on high alert. I would not pay 900 dollars for something an not take care of it with a screen protector. You would rather have someone open it up risk damaging further just so you can rock it naked. Just my opinion we don't have to agree.

It's very hard to replace the glass alone, plus you'll wind up with dust and fingerprints in there most likely, add to that the fact that you're doing a teardown of the device and that just seems foolish to do IMHO.
I'm like you, I hate screen protectors, and I hate covers/cases. I like to carry it completely naked. So if I ever damage a device too much I usually sell it and buy a new one...:angel:

On the other hand, there are some (me) that thinks it is stupid to pay $900 for a phone with QHD screen and then make it look like $hit with a screen protector that doesn't fit...
But to your point - each to their own. There is no right or wrong here.

Did anybody here replaced a glass? I did it for the note 2,it was not difficult and indeed 25usd for cover, frame and glass...that made my phone brand new. Does anybody know the glass price for the note 4, if available? In a couple of years I will think about it

I was actually thinking the same.
Sick of fiddling around with screen protectors and screen just looks (and feels) the best without any film on it.
I would be OK spending $100 or so once a year to get a fresh glass installed.

Glass can be cheap but it can be near impossible to replace just the glass without damaging the digitizer or LCD.

That is entirely wrong. Maybe it's difficult to do it yourself, but at a good mobile shop it's an easy affordable affair.

I did it myself for the galaxy note2: a piece of cake for 25usd. The idea of this thread makes sense, and it allows replacing the aluminum frame as byproduct. Aluminum is soft....

Ok, here's the thing, on the Note 2 and S3, I think they fused the screen with a different glue than newer devices. Either that or the amount or method is different, because when I repaired an S3 it was simple and relatively easy, but my dad's note 3 that had a huge crack was near impossible (totally broke the amoled) and my ipad air was super easy because the screen had an air gap. I think the difficulty varies by device, but I know with the Note 3 it was not easy, could also have to do with the complexity of the crack. When it's a small or large single crack, it may be easy to remove the glass, but those crack looking screen cracks that are tiny and all over the screen are much more difficult to repair; you have to heat the screen and pick off every little fragment of glass, which is why my Dad's note 3 was so difficult.

Anyone found a display replacement that includes the front cover? Without it, it should be nearly impossible, am I right?

I tried combining the components and failed. Broke the circuitry in the LCD when trying to mount the frame...

I asked Motorola what i should do when i dropped my phone and the glas got broken. They told i should send it to their repair service, it was datrepair in Germany maybe its another in other countries. They Arranged everything for me and i paid 120€ for the replacement, just the glass maybe touch but idk, screen was ok when i was sending it in. They even took care of shipping without any cost for me.
Normaly i repair devices by myselfe but in fact the phone was only 1 Month old i refused to it.

If you have a heat gun (or hair dryer) and a set of torx screwdrivers, you should be able to fix it at home. If something is tight, never force it. Use plastic tools to pry open the case, usually comes together with the screwdriver set if you buy them online

For that, you would need the lcd including the frame which is nicht available yet...
So atm nearly impossible.

I managed to get some tiny cracks on the edge near the front camera (it fell onto metal from my jacket, i was bending over). Thankfully it's not the touch area, but i now somehow understand why so many people have cracked phones. It happens so quickly. And i was treating it like a raw eggshell, too.

I dropped mine as I was getting out of the car.It cost me R1500 (R is for South African Rand) to replace the screen.The guys who repaired it had to crack the plastic frame to get the screen out .They used glue to keep the new screen in place.I dont think they knew what they were doing,but it was the only repair center that was in the same province as me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_yzMPWCQOM This video shows the whole process with a complete display assembly. Its incredibly more difficult if you get the screen without the frame as the screen is affixed to the frame with some sort of adhesive foam.

I also broke my screen and ordered a replacement. Unfortunately I broke the frame in the process of removing the old screen.
Luckily I got my hands on a replacement frame and some 3M 2 milimeters adhesive strips. Praying for everything to work out put together..

Best of luck, if you can document the process as there isn't much info out on screen replacements where you affix a new frame to a screen. My frame broke when I dropped my phone which is why I just got the whole unit. Cost me about $62 CAD shipped for the whole unit.

Has anyone here tried a replacement? Any tips?

So is it possible to change just the glass without the whole display unit?

So, I tried for myself with my old display after I got a replacement new display including a new frame.
It is absolutely impossible to separate the front glass from the digitizer and display without destroying all three.
I think even a professional wouldn't be able to do it. Display and digitizer are very flexible while the screen is glued really really good to them
I heated it up to no avail. Maybe some glue remover would have helped, but I don't think it would get between the glass and the digitizer.
These phones are just not build to be repared, they are build to be thrown away.
Exchanging the new frame including display was no easy job too, but it can be done.
Be sure to have a high quality Torx T3 screwdriver or bit, the cheap china ones will do nothing but destroy the tiny screws.
