How expensive is it to replace the actual glass every 6 months or so? Obviously it will be more expensive than a screen protector, but you will benefit from a wonderful oleophobic surface with perfect clarity and sensitivity without any halo issues. To me that would be a good trade-off for a bit more cost. I do however want to know how much it would cost to replace the glass. Anyone has a clue?

You got to be kidding me. I never heard of somebody thinking like this. I would rather deal with a halo or screen protector than replacing the entire screen. That just seems foolish.

Yeah, you need to work a bit on your reading comprehension skills. I specifically said this is not about replacing the screen. I specifically said it is about replacing the glass which costs less than $25 on a Note 3.
I would rather risk the screen than live with a halo or other equally annoying visual impairment.
No way I'll put a screen protector on until the tempered glass ones actually fit right.

I am talking about replacing the scratched gorilla glass which sits on top of the digitizer and the screen.
On the Note 3 this glass could be replaced for under $30 (which is not too much more than a good quality tempered glass protector).
Why would you need to replace it every 6 months? I had a phone littered with scratches and used it for two years and the scratches were only visible when the screen was off. I think once per 2 years is enough unless you have a lot of sand in your pocket.
Cost might be fine, but I'm not OK with opening my phone up and risk trapping dust or finger print under the glass. Not to mention gambling my device during the tear down process.
In my experience, it's not easy to replace the glass. Normally the digitizer and LCD comes glued together. They are made that way so less likely to get dusted between the LCD and digitizer; however, you can purchased separately but as mention, it's not an easy job to separate it. If you're not experienced in doing this, I wouldn't recommended it as it's very easy to crack the LCD. It's not cheap if you want to buy a LCD + Digitizer combo, you're looking at a $200-300+ for replacement.

It's not my comprehension it's my stupidity meter that on high alert. I would not pay 900 dollars for something an not take care of it with a screen protector. You would rather have someone open it up risk damaging further just so you can rock it naked. Just my opinion we don't have to agree.

It's very hard to replace the glass alone, plus you'll wind up with dust and fingerprints in there most likely, add to that the fact that you're doing a teardown of the device and that just seems foolish to do IMHO.
I'm like you, I hate screen protectors, and I hate covers/cases. I like to carry it completely naked. So if I ever damage a device too much I usually sell it and buy a new one...:angel:

On the other hand, there are some (me) that thinks it is stupid to pay $900 for a phone with QHD screen and then make it look like $hit with a screen protector that doesn't fit...
But to your point - each to their own. There is no right or wrong here.
Did anybody here replaced a glass? I did it for the note 2,it was not difficult and indeed 25usd for cover, frame and glass...that made my phone brand new. Does anybody know the glass price for the note 4, if available? In a couple of years I will think about it

I was actually thinking the same.
Sick of fiddling around with screen protectors and screen just looks (and feels) the best without any film on it.
I would be OK spending $100 or so once a year to get a fresh glass installed.
Glass can be cheap but it can be near impossible to replace just the glass without damaging the digitizer or LCD.
That is entirely wrong. Maybe it's difficult to do it yourself, but at a good mobile shop it's an easy affordable affair.

I did it myself for the galaxy note2: a piece of cake for 25usd. The idea of this thread makes sense, and it allows replacing the aluminum frame as byproduct. Aluminum is soft....
Ok, here's the thing, on the Note 2 and S3, I think they fused the screen with a different glue than newer devices. Either that or the amount or method is different, because when I repaired an S3 it was simple and relatively easy, but my dad's note 3 that had a huge crack was near impossible (totally broke the amoled) and my ipad air was super easy because the screen had an air gap. I think the difficulty varies by device, but I know with the Note 3 it was not easy, could also have to do with the complexity of the crack. When it's a small or large single crack, it may be easy to remove the glass, but those crack looking screen cracks that are tiny and all over the screen are much more difficult to repair; you have to heat the screen and pick off every little fragment of glass, which is why my Dad's note 3 was so difficult.

Has Anyone else cracked a screen on their infuse yet and replaced it? The only parts I can find are the whole assembly of the LCD, digitizer, etc and its like $200. When I had an iphone i replaced the screen/glass part for about $30.
I looked at buying a eBay phone with cracked screen, by the time you add on 180-200$ for the screen it wasn't worth while. Cheapest I found was ~180$
because of the way our phones are constructed, it makes the repair much more expensive. If I'm not mistaken, the iphone's glass and lcd aren't bonded together, and don't have the digitizer attached. The bonded screen and glass with digitizer is much more expensive. you can find the whole thing for about 130.
What I did when I cracked my screen was, I just put the phone with cracked screen up on ebay and got 117 for it. Then I just bought a used one off craigslist. They got for like 200-250 in my area. so its like a 100 dollar repair
that really sucks samsung made such a stupid design. I really like this phone and was enjoying it alot more than my iphone.
Are there any androids without such a bad design for the screen?

My Infuse has held up well also but if it's the same screen (gorilla glss) as an iPhone it is definitely possible to crack...my son has broken 2 iPhone screens from drops without case.

Gorilla glass can break. It really all depeneds on the angle of impact. I dropped my phone exactly face down on tile it didn't bounce just smacked the floor dead on. I was expecting the worse but it was fine.

I broke mine, don't really know how but it was hardly noticeable. it still bothered me so I replaced it. well I shouldn't have cuz the replacement was defective. ugh. I don't recommend the repair but would be willing to do it for a small fee. the screen is bonded to a metal frame (magnesium maybe, its light even for aluminum but I didn't spark test it) and pretty much is difficult not to destroy in removal. hence all the parts that come with it. though I think now that I know what to expect I could do the repair without an issue. if you decide to do it your self pm me. ill let you know what you will run into.
Cracked the corner of my screen. This really sucks.. I paid only 150 for the phone, but will have to spend 180 to replace it. Hopefully the price will go down?
I dropped mine on gravel and it must have hit a rock just right, cracked it pretty good. Unlike my wife's iphone (which had the same thing happen but at a different location), the android touch screen still works just fine.

They will repair for $155.
Seems like the way to go if needing repair.

its not gorilla glass is how she broke it...No where on Samsungs site or Cornings site do they say the skyrocket has it, and in fact i have contacted both and have gotten this response via email from samsung

So, Im hearing some people post on forums that the Digitizer is glued to the Glass and is separable, meaning the repair will cost way less than paying for a whole new digitizer + LCD + Glass assembly.

I don't think you can separate them and manage to reuse the circuitry, were talking less 1mm thick. I've replaced glass before, next time I'll probably send it to Sammy.

Replacing the glass is not too difficult if you know your way around computer hardware. What makes it a pain is how small all the connections and ribbon cable clasps are and ect.
Here's a link to a video tutorial on the Atrix to give you an idea of what you can expect. About an hour to replace.

Tried and failed... That is a nice video, but my understanding is that the Galaxy S II and III are different for repairs. The III you can replace just the top glass, but with the II it's easiest to replace the whole LCD and digitizer + glass. HTCs on the other hand have the top glass and digitizer as one replaceable unit.
I had this idea I could get the LCD lifted up and then use fishing line like floss to separate the glass and digitizer. But I didn't get that far. I didn't have enough heat and trying to remove the LCD, it busted. The OLED is like a brittle film and the adhesive used is crazy, so that method was doomed. I think if I had a different approach things might have gone better.
Now I have a worthless disassembled phone waiting on the prices of the whole LCD to come back down to sane levels. They were like $121,$131,$155, last check they're $200 on eBay. Makes me want to cuss!
I saw a video on YouTube where the top glass was busted open, not just cracked. I think it was a plain Galaxy S II. They used playing cards to dig in between the glass and digitizer layers. Then you clean off the digitizer and tape your new clean glass down and it would be fixed. I think if you could further break the top glass to pry it up and be able to dig in between the glass and the digitizer, that's how I would try to replace just the glass.

So in the video they had their screen/digitizer/glass removed from their phone chassis. I wouldn't go that far fearing you'd break the LCD. You may not have to do more than removing the battery before you get started.
Another thing the Skyrocket top glass needs this double sided clear tape. I presume this is because the digitizer is separate from the top glass and needs to be connected right to the glass instead of just held on with the double sided tape on the edges alone. I imagine that that could work if you pressed extra hard on your touches, but I don't know. I found this tape from EtradeSupply.com - they have a Youtube video I watched over and over. But shipping to the states is $15, adding to the expense.

I did the same thing. I got the old glass seperated with a hair dryer, but messed up some of the amoled screen and the glass was never fully flush after the reglue.
Super Annoying. :/ ending up buying the new screen kit on ebay for like 120. :/

Yeah, I was able to get a new housing and screen assembly for my Skyrocket and all is well now. My phone is like new.
I did find some newer repair videos that use the playing card trick for removing just the cracked glass.

The quick version is that he says stick the phone in the freezer for a couple of minutes, because that will weaken the digitizer glue/tape. Then use your card to dig the glue out, pushing it out of the edge of the glass in a slow, lengthy process. He had success this way on a similar phone. I read elsewhere that Goo Gone cleaner could be used to remove any adhesive residue from the digitizer.
One thing I would worry about with this process is air bubbles in the new digitizer tape, since this other video has an industrial vacuum pressure machine as part of the final assembly process of the screens.

Related is an issue of dust, since a spec of lint or dust will cause an air bubble, as I just discovered applying a screen protector onto my Skyrocket.
So this little "$15" repair can add up with the digitizer adhesive and buying the Goo Gone and rubber gloves (which I didn't even use) and all of the rest. Just going for the new display comparatively is easy.
I scratched up my screen (its really a small scratch but annoys me that its there), so now I plan on replacing it.
I've replace digitizers for friends phones before but the one thing I never thought about is whether or not these replacement, remanufactured digitizers are made using same gorilla glass that the original ones are made of. I'm sure they aren't OEM even though most of them say they are.
I would hate to replace my outside glass for one less durable because of one annoying blemish.

I bought a day one Sensation I've Dropped it from a 8foot Ladder.. screen never Scratched or Broken.. I had to get it Replaced because Dust got behind the Screen and now I phoned phone from about a foot off ground and it cracked.. I think they are even using normal glass again.. BS... Stick with Gorilla Glass
That really doesn't mean anything to be fair, drops are a crap shoot, there are about a million different ways a phone can hit the deck. Some survivable, some not, regardless of height.
its all the same, more or less.
No two panels will be the same, even if their both from HTC. Some might have undetectable imperfections that could have a nice place for a break to start.
I was somewhat unlucky with my first digitizer. It might have had an imperfection along the edge that allowed it to break

My T-Mobile Nexus 5 fell out of my pocket and landed straight on it's face, shattering the screen. It still works, I still use it, but the screen will now need to be replaced.
I am very handy and can do this job myself - if the cost is reasonable. My question is, do I need just the screen which is just $5.95 for a "Black LG Google Nexus 5 D820 D821 Front Screen Glass Lens Replacement Part" on eBay or do I need the whole digitizer assembly, which is $99+ on eBay. I hope it is the former since the screen is still responsive to touch.
Look at your phone closely. Is it just front mirror that's broken? Digitizer screen is behind the front screen. I would post some pictures to see how bad it is.
I would disassemble it and see if it's broken to if you have an extra phone you can use until you get your parts
You should be able to just replace the "front" glass. But I'll pick up something of about 20/30$. I think 6$ is definitly too poor to be a good glass..

There's no way anyone is replacing just the glass and not having a horrible deformed or otherwise irregular phone after gluing or taping it back together again.
Short answer: You need at least the glass + digitizer. Preferably the frame as well to make it easier on yourself.

^this. And don't buy the non oem one for 99 bucks. It will be garbage in so many possible ways. Pay the 150 dollars and send it to lg. Replacing the glass only is not easy at all either research loca glue and you'll see. Or read my other posts on why not to do screen repairs yourself with a n5. Trust me pay lg to fix it, you'll save time, headaches, and money.

I also take care of my phones VERY much, and can see some scratches visible on sunlight after 3 months. I never put my phone with something that can scratch it. But then again, I saw those little scratches on every phone I had. Good thing about older phones is that it wasn't so freaking hard to find a screen protector

I have a friend that works in a larger phone accessory shop here, and he said that none of the protectors they have are full screen or that they always have bubbles.
Have U tried any? Maybe a suggestion so I know which protectors are good for ordering online.
I have a galaxy alpha with gorilla glass 4, and also have the small scratches.
These small scratches come from sand,dirt,dust that is harder than the screen and rubs against your phone in your pocket, these small scratches are unavoidable without screenprotector.
But these are small so they don't bother me, what worries me more is the back glass which is not GG4 and scratches more easy.

I've owned a Samsung Galaxy S7 SM-G930W8 Exynos edition since release date. One day around month 3 I was removing the phone from my otter box case and with the littlest bit of flexing the back glass cracked horribly. I found this to be very annoying since this is supposed to be a "prime" quality phone with gorilla glass 4. I think it was more like gurly glass 4 as I bearly flexed the phone at all and am a very caring / gentle phone user and have owned many and never cracked a case/screen ever. My question is has anyone had broken glass, front or back replaced under samsungs warranty or am I crap outta luck? I called Samsung once and they said it's not covered. Since it was not outside of proper use I feel I was fed a line. Any help or suggestions? Very dissapointed in gorilla glass 4,and Samsung for placing it all over all sides of the gs7 in a very thin manner.
Makes me rethink if I'll ever purchase another Samsung again.

Hard or rigid protectors can't cover the whole screen because the edge has a bevel. I got an anti-glare matte screen protector and it works great

My question is has anyone had broken glass, front or back replaced under samsungs warranty or am I crap outta luck? I called Samsung once and they said it's not covered. Since it was not outside of proper use I feel I was fed a line. Any help or suggestions? Very dissapointed in gorilla glass 4,and Samsung for placing it all over all sides of the gs7 in a very thin manner.
Makes me rethink if I'll ever purchase another Samsung again.

Well those back panels can be bought for like 13 bucks and can be easy to replace but you will lose the waterproof tho.

But I don't really want a rigid protector, I mean, i have been using plastic film protectors on all my phones, because I'm very gentle with them and just want to keep them from small pocket scratches. I just need a full screen one that will go over those 2.5d edges of the glass. I also don't like those matte protectors, they totally mess up the screen quality
I had 3 years SG S4 and only one little scratch. After 3 days having S7 I have already weird "graze" (is it correct word in English?) . Is not visible when screen is clean but dirt always stay in the same place. I'm VERY disappointed. Also afraid about home button made of plastic !
My first S7 edge had a super Deep scratch right on the screen curve, stay that for awhile before it turn in a crack going across the screen.

I bought a Fosmon screen protector for both mine and my wife's S7s and they fit really well. If you apply them correctly then you won't have any bubbles. I never use the guides or anything to put it on, I just go slowly and use a credit card to smooth out bumps. Cleaning your phone screen first with alcohol and a lint free wipe cuts down on anything left on the screen to cause bubbles.

That is not at all what I was asking. My question was has anybody had this issue and had it replaced under warranty? If so what did the process entail and what was said to get it done. I appreciate your comment as to boost your standings in the forums but if your info is not some of actual help you might wanna say nothing at all and let someone else answer the issue.

Since you went hostile... You might wanna to stop being a **** and start your own thread, for your own issue, instead of hijacking this thread. You broke your phone and that isn't a warranty issue, which Samsung already explained to you. He offered you info the help you quickly & easily fix your phone for very little $.
As for screen scratches on my S7, I don't have any so far. No screen protector either. I guess it's probably nerdy, but I carry my phone in a Nite-Ize holster, on my belt, and never in my pocket. So far, I've never scratched a screen on any of my phones since the OG Droid. I had a screen protector on my OG Droid, for a few months, but that's been the only one I've used.

What's your problem? Maybe you should just STFU then if you get mad bout people helping your dumb ass. You break your own phone and come in hete crying bout warranty while this treath is about scratches on the screen. So next time calm down or dont reply
Personally if your just using it day to day you wont see any scratches on your phone especially since the Galaxy S7 has gorilla glass 4. I would recommend a screen protector or even a glass screen protector if you are the type of person who chucks around their phone and doesn't really care about it.
You should be fine using it without a screen protector
