I did't create this app. I was using PowerAmp for years since I bought it but gave this app a try and noticed a significant improvement in audio quality so this is just to raise awareness
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neutroncode.mp&hl=en
Has features like 64bit processing that PowerAmp doesn't have. The UI is a little clunky but I personally feel the sound quality more than makes up for it. It sounds great even with the included earphones that came with the G2. There's also a evaluation version to try it out. Try it out and leave your comments!:good:
OMG I hate the UI in that player so much so it can be all the things in the world I want but I still wouldn't use it. I've tried several times to become friends with it but I just can't. I've moved on. I hate it that much.

I agree. The UI leaves a lot to be desired but I suppose it's the sacrifice one has to make to use the best sounding player on the Play store. Though one might argue for a paid app, there should be no sacrifices.
If they remake the UI sometime I will definitely give it another try.

I use shuttle+
It got built in equalizer and great interface. Better than the stock.
On reviews the stock played got good score, but it's really nothing compared to my old Xperia Arc.......
Edit: the equalizer, stock or nonstock! It feels like it suppresses the sound. Best when I disable it.. weird..

Neutron supposedly the engines are all about quality at the sacrifice of efficiency (high CPU usage) and the UI is horrid. I played with it a bit, but at the time I only had mp3's of average 180kbit bitrate and I couldn't hear a significant difference so I went back to PlayerPro which isn't horrid to use.
And people, mods that make things louder don't make them better.
Big fan of neutron. I actually get better bass than viper

Just tried it. I like it. Paired with Viper, it sounds incredible.

After playing with it some more, I went back to Poweramp. Neutron is far too clunky and buggy. Being I am running Viper4Android anyways, the audio quality difference was minimal.

I know there is a DSP manager app, but that is not sounding that great. The reason I say this is that recently I gave up Droid X. The X had presets built into the music player for bass, 3D and stuff which made the same songs sound a lot better on the X than Droid 1.
I have tried some settings on Droid 1 in DSP Manager but they are nowhere near the quality of the X.
So does anybody have any other suggestions ?
Audio Quality..
I thought the same thing about the music sounding a bit flat. I installed the Power Amp player and am much happier now. It has a lot more customization controls, so you can add more bass if you want.
MixZing has an equalizer as well.
Try PowerAmp app From Market

+1 to PowerAMP its amazing and has tons of presets and you can also make your own.
3rd on PowerAmp..nothing else like it Even plays music ripped from streaming well.
HTC's new senseUI (in Desire Z and HD) has a DSP Manager app that has an equalizer as well. 3 different settings for Headphones, BT and speaker.
Maybe that could be ported for other phones as well?
And no, it doesn't improve quality, a better set of headphones will do that.

PowerAMP is really amazing but I use volume+ now because it affects the every audio app (nice for streaming apps).
Just note that on any eq, you may notice some distortion in the sound. This is especially true if using bass boost and applies to any form of eq.

This might be not too related to the topic, but..
I rarely ever use equalizers for the sole reason that the songs are already mixed how the artists intended the songs to sound. I used to abuse EQ like hell when I was younger and maxed bass and treble on everything I listened to. When I turned it off I suddenly noticed small quirks and new guitars in the background, just details that I couldn't hear before because the bass overpowered everything.
Just something to think about.
Hi guys, any audiophiles here like me?
This music player has terrible interface. Basic functions doesn't work too well. BUT!!!
OMG the sound quality of this player is mind blowing. I really mean it. SGS and voodoo is known for it's SQ. However, despite it sounds clear, the sounds is not precise and out of place by an inch. Was a voodoo + equalizer app + poweramp fan and still am cuz of interface but i can forsee an android music player to better poweramp! Assuming this music player gets developed nicely. Give it a try guys and if you like the SQ, show dev some support just by rating etc.

I suppose sound is very subjective and also depends on the headphones you use as well the phone you use. On SGS, neutron definitely widens soundstage with better sound separation whilst keeping the sound crisp and clear. Sure poweramp is clear but the sound is everywhere. Also with that filtering of highest frequency on neutron, the sound feels very calm to listen to as well as having the "fun" sound from general boost the app gives to SQ.
However as you said and as i said on OP sq is the only pro atm but any audiophiles would (or should ) use it just for that reason like i do

Another "good sound, bad UI" app is Rockbox. It has not been announced as "useable" yet, but many reports that it works fine. And I think it has more sound tweaking features than Neutron. It would be interesting to hear an audiophiles comparison between these two.

Try them with voodoo sound ! Really good sound!
I agree, the headphones included are pretty much trash, compared with my CX870 they sound terrible. I know these are expensive, but any good headphones for about 20-40$ will sound better and probably last longer. I'm in love with sennheiser, the cx200 can be found for 20$ and they sound really good too for the price.
Yes !! the Effect is really good when used in Power AMP, but when compared to my Nokia N8 ear phones, its bad.
I also have a i9000 phone and its earphones look identical as the provided by the i9103. Except for the jack, which stripes are white instead of black. The i9000 ones sound way better that the i9103.
They are also incompatible, I mean, I can't swap them. Using Voodoo on both phones.
Cut that Beats crap, thats no where close to a real Eq. You want to hear what real music was supposed to be like?
You want a powerful music player that has equalizers for nearly every aspect of your song?
You want to get the recently released jetAudio app. This music player is the most feature packed one I've seen and tried yet.
It is a player that is for Windows and it was recently ported to Android.
I blast Dubstep though my headphones daily so I needed a nice Eq for that. This is the best sounding player I've seen in a while.
It supports nearly every format availible, has insane amounts of equalizers, can change the speed of song, different effects (crossfade, cut, etc), can post to twitter/facebook for what you are playing if you want, has some fancy animations and more.
If you are looking for a music player then use this one.
Play Store Link (free): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jetappfactory.jetaudio
It is currently recently released so it may have bugs. From what I've seen its working 100% though.
Also, if you want an ICS themed music player, check out the Apollo app from CM9 (google around to find the apk). It is awesome as well and is themeable (it only has a dark and light theme as of now though).
Thanks, great find! Looks nicer than PowerAMP.
Great!
Looks great, I'll definitely give this a try. I just wish they decided to use the Holo theme rather than going for a shiny-iPhone skin... but I'm OCD!

Without BBE+ this player is not that great, however BBE Sound Inc. will soon come out with there own player app for Android soon, some time this year.
I've got a pair of Westone 3's on the way, and I want to find a way to maximize the sound quality this phone can produce. There's several things wish discussing here:
1) Best audio player? I've heard Neutron and GoneMad are best for sound quality, but many prefer PowerAmp for the UI.
2) Are there any audio kernels for our device? I know Siyah and Voodoo and Faux had some legendary audio kernels tweaked for best performance - are there any for our phone?
3) Best EQ app? I've heard Viper4android and Noozoxide are great. Only tried the former - I need to test it more but so far I like it.
4) USB -> external device - > headphones? Any thoughts on that setup? Any experience with amp/DAC combo?
Audiophiles needed!

I'm pretty sure that all Qualcomm Snapdragon devices use Qualcomm's audio chip and it seems like the Samsung devices with Exynos processors get Wolfson audio chip.
On topic, I prefer using PowerAmp because it's a fairly great app and offers a lot of options (like EQ switches) for semi-audiophiles such as myself. I'm still using presets but may venture out and adjust EQs. I do have the PowerAmp ICS/JB skin installed to make it a little more streamlined.

Yea there's a lot of good music players out there. I've noticed a few more popup just in the time I've had my S3 over a year ago.
I've tried them all, with all types of sound mods.. NOTHING, I MEAN NOTHING compares to DFX Player Pro. Hands down the best sounding music player for android. It just doesn't have the best UI but def usable.
Another vote for poweramp. I've tried easily over 10 apps, and finally ended up getting the pro version. It couples great audio, usability, and customization.
When I was on TW, the best audio kernel I thought was faux. Had, by far, the least amount of popping whenever trying to undervolt. Also, his app has a lot of good tweaks.

I always thought the presence of audio popping depended on the type of processor you have (fast, nominal, or slow) which dictates how far you can UV. For some odd reason though, this doesn't apply to me on AOSP but it does on TW. For instance, I have a nominal cpu and can't UV below 1100 mv on TW regardless of kernel without hearing audio popping in music and ringtones. However, on AOSP, I use BMS which comes default UV and it works seamlessly with no audio popping.

I thought the same. The weird thing is, I have a fast processor and I would still get popping on most kernels (on TW) going under 925. Of course, it depended if I put my minimum cpu speed to under 384. Faux comes undervolted at 850 at 384 mhz and I never had any popping. I'm on 4.4 with BMS now, min cpu to 189 and no popping either.

Man, the lead up to this phone's release was interesting cuz I thought we'd be able to use Voodo Sound since people were saying it was all the rage on the OG Galaxy S. I was so letdown lol. I'd rather have a Qualcomm processor than a Exynos processor so that difference in DAC plays a lesser factor for me.
Edit: Not saying I dislike the audio quality in our S3 but hearing there's a better component makes me want the better component.
So you personally have no qualms about our DAC? Things sound the way they should through your headphones?
I'm anxious to hear if there's a big difference between the phone and my Denon receiver for my home theater. I'm gonna plug the headphones into both and see how big a difference it is.

Nah its fine to me but I have to reiterate that I've only used two IEMs, Klipsch S4 (not the S4A, I mistyped earlier) and SkullCandy. I also only have an S3 and my 4th gen iPod touch but I prefer the S3 with the same headphones. My opinion would likely change if I had other IEMs (need to use a wider variety than just 2), I'm not a fan of over the ear headphones too.
Oh okay. I've never owned real nice headphones. I'm getting the Westone 3s as a gift for Christmas. They're 3-driver headphones! They are about $350 for a long time, and since they're making a new model, they're slashing prices. Amazon has them for $179 right now, and these are headphones that were often said to be the best money can buy for under $500 (and can reproduce sounds as well as some high end over the ear cans!). If you've got the money, it's an amazing steal that won't be around long.
I understand the tight budget - I'm in grad school as well. Getting an MS in Mathematics. What are you studying?

That does look like a nice deal, definitely post back with your thoughts on them! I just want to know enough information to be able to adjust EQs if I dislike its current state in my music. Just want to recognize what XYZ does as I tune it. I'm not fond of purchasing $200+ buds cuz I don't fully feel I would listen to them enough to warrant the price but I probably do since I listen to music about 1-2 hours a day. I stopped reading that sound quality thread well before I purchased the Klipsch IEM as I started to care more about sound quality over the last six to eight months. They were my first IEM that I've ever purchased over $20 lol
I'm getting an MS in Sport Management. Good luck on your degree, it'll be worth the work!
Damn i thought we has the Wolfson DAC
qualcomm's DAC isn't all that bad though.
My iPhone 4 still sounds better though (stock)
Wolfson DAC FTW!
