[Q] Root help needed.. - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Droid Maxx: I was previously rooted with Rockmymoto, MotoWPnomo, and used RSDlite to go back stock 4.2.2 and wait for 4.4.. Now I can't seem to figure out how to root again with rockmymoto but it takes straight to step 3. Can I use Slapmymoto 1.0 to gain root without flashing the 4.4 OTA that was pulled?

I did but in the directions it is saying to install the update but all I am wanting to do right now is just re-root. I sure Verizon will make changes to the next OTA before it is released again.

After reading the post again I'm thinking I can run Slapmymoto 1.0 and just not flash the OTA.. Does that sound correct?

yes.. but make sure you download and run impactor before you flash the 4.4 ota or do any sideloading.

How to root XT925 on Jelly Bean OTA (4.1.2) ?

Hi!
I did a Factory Reset after the JB OTA and lost root. Any easy known way to reroot de device?
XT925 (GSM)
Just checked, the su binary is still there, but when I type su in the terminal emulator I get Permission denied.
None of the root apps are working.
Any way to fix this?

This doesn't work because you need root to change the file permissions.
After a lot of flashing and reflashing, bricking and unbricking the phone, I managed to get Jelly Bean with root.
What finally worked:
-> Used matt's tool to restore phone to ICS
-> Made factory reset and hard factory reset (from recovery menu)
-> Flashed Brazil Retail ROM
-> Used matt's tool to root
-> Installed OTA Rootkeeper, made su backup and unrooted.
-> Applied JB OTA
-> Restored backup in OTA Rootkeeper

Some forum members tried to keep root through the OTA update and used the OTARootKeeper which didn't work all the time as intended. Some of use were sort of 1/2 re-rooted with the SU binary on the system but no root.
I found that Matt's Root restore script finished the process and got back root. This is NOT Matt's utility, but a separate script, just for recovering root.
You can find a link to it in the post I made in a different thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37656547&postcount=136
I have not unlocked my boot loader and using the CWM method of rooting requires that. I wasn't ready to void my warranty nor was I willing to give up trying to get root back.
Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

Yes - sort of, it will work
I have a 925 (UK) running 4.1.2, which had the tether issue.
So,
I unlocked bootloader
ran the Matts tool to revert back to ICS ( yes it is a verizon tool.)
this reinstalled ICS, however it also broke the modem, so I had no signal / red triangle
then used another tool, whilst in fastboot mode, to install a French Vodafone rom, and did the OTA
to 4.1.2
now my tether works -though no root.

Don't loose root after OTA 4.1.2 JB
To all of you who loose root and stay 'half' rooted after OTA, it's because you are missing a small detail.
1. Right after you root, go to play store and update tour super su APP.
2. After you update the super user APP, open it and update it's binaries. Only after these 2 updates you can install rootkeeper and backup the root and then unroot.
3. Finally, accept the OTA and after JB is installed you open rootkeeper and restore root.
Cheers!

[Q] Which root method best for unlocked Dev Ed currently on 4.2.2?

I've read through several root threads (mos by jcase I think) but want to confirm as of today which is best to root an unlocked dev ed maxx that is currently on 4.2.2?
Really appreciate any help -- thanks!
EDIT: My goal is to be rooted on 4.4 / 19.6.3
Since you're unlocked you can root in custom recovery. See second part of this guide

Thanks for the quick reply -- sorry, I forgot to mention that my goal is to be rooted in 4.4.
Do I upgrade to 4.4 first and then root? Or root in 4.2.2 then upgrade to 4.4?
Links appreciated but I'll take any help you can spare...
Thanks!
I'd upgrade first. You can root 4.4 and future updates in twrp. That's the beauty of being unlocked (on this device at least) not having to wait for root exploits.

Okay one more question please -- took the update and rooted with TWRP everything worked great EXCEPT I just realized it didn't update to 4.4, it just updated to a higher 4.2.2.
Now the update for 4.4. is downloading OTA.
Can I install this OTA, having installed TWRP and rooted? Or will that brick my phone?
I feel like you need to be 100% stock to take OTA's, no?
If so, how do I get back stock?

You'll need to flash the stock recovery back to get the ota to install. Once you're on 4.4 there's yet another 4.4 update/patch that came out a few weeks ago. Might as well Install that too before flashing twrp again.

Towelroot & 4.4.2 kit Kat update

So this is what I am running into.
Updated to 4.3 and used Towelroot to gain root access, now when I try OTA update to 4.4..2 it wont install.
I have tried downloading the 4.3 firmware to Odin back to an unrooted 4.3. For some reason 7 zip wont recognize either 4.3 Firmware from the other thread.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get back to an unrooted 4.3 so that I can get the 4.4 update?
Thanks
You can unroot with SuperSU.

A. From SuperSU
B. Or do you have run the whole "towelroot steps again"?
With towelroot, do you always have to uroot for ant OTA's?

[Q] CF Auto Root query

I'm pretty confused about the way CF auto root works. some say it breaks OTAs some say it doesn't affect the recovery so it won't break OTAs. can anyone here please explain me if I'll still get OTAs after rooting my all stock 5.0 Nexus 5 by Chainfire's Auto Root method? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No you won't get OTA.
In 4.4, if you had root and stock recovery, you could still get OTA. In 5.0, root makes changes that prevent OTA. on 5.0, ANY changes prevent OTA
oh god no this is bad for me
I really wanted to use this WiFi kill app on my Nexus and now I have to wait for 5.0.1 and then root

You need to be full, 100% stock.
I too was rooted with CF and stock recovery.
To be able to sideload the OTA I had to:
1) download and extract the 5.0 factory image
2) fastboot flash boot boot.img
3) fastboot flash system system.img
4) adb sideload The5_0_1OTA.zip
The CF root process modifies one or both of boot and/or system. The 5.0.1 OTA will not apply with these modified.
The above process will not lose data.

Regain root after Marhmallow update?

I had Android 5.0 (PB1) and was rooted. I updated to Marshmallow using the posted method, and everything went well, but I did lose root access after updating to Marshmallow, which I did expect. I did downgrade to 5.0 (PB1) and tried to root using the posted directions, but to no avail. I am now attempting to update back to marshmallow. I also have a LOCKED bootloader.
Goto rooting the S5 thread as locked 6.0.1 is rooted for days now.

I read that article, but you need to be rooted do that, I tried to downgrade to 5.0 (PB1) and tried to root according to the directions from the link that is also referenced to on that page, but it did not work. Is there a specific way to downgrade to 5.0 (PB1) and to root? What iI did was I used Odin and flashed the PB1 image and then tried the rooting method mentioned, but it did not work. If there is a specific way to downgrade to PB1 and root, then I can follow the directions that you suggested to me.

flash stock PB1 and follow the Get Root instructions on PB1, http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370

I was initially on PB1 with root access, and looking back, I should have followed the link of how to unlock the boot loader and to update to PD1. Unfortunately, I followed the directions on the last link you gave me, the one you said that didn't work for you.....the one about updating to PD1 for locked boot loaders. Unlike you, it worked for me. I was on PD1 without a problem, but I wasn't rooted.. So I tried to downgrade back to PB1 and then follow the rooting directions, but it didn't work for me.
From what I have been told, since I upgraded to 6.0 (PD1), it is IMPOSSIBLE to downgrade to 5.0 and root. Is this correct?
Also, if that is the case, then is it possible for me to apply a pre rooted 5.0 image, so I can unlock the blootloader and update to 6.0?
Thanks in advance.
THERE IS NO ROOT FOR PD1 (MashMellow) for LOCKED BOOTLOADER yet. Once you're on MM 6.0 you will lose root. If you want root, you need to downgrade back to PB1 (LP), then get root working again. Once up upgrade from PB1 LP to 6.0 MM you will lose root.

I am aware that once I got to PD1, I will lose root. I am also aware that I need to downgrade to PB1 and get root working again, but that is my precise problem. I have gotten back to PB1 flashing PB1 image, but I can't seem to get it rooted, at least not by following the directions mentioned on http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370.
Question. After flashing back to PB1, do you I need to flash the PB1 bootloader? For some reason, I am unable to root when I get back to PB1.

You don't need to flash PB1 bootloader. Did you try install Kroot manually as suggested? Please show me where it failed? Did you run root.bat and if not working install Kroot manually and run roo2.bat.

I can tell you that when I tried to run the root and root2 batch files, I got a message that said the files were missing, so I looked at the root.bat file, and I ran the individual tasks in the batch file manually., including the manual install of king root. When I ran king root, it said no methods were available.
