Rooting Xoom Wifi with JB 4.1.1?

Sorry, I'm a bit cautious when dealing with rooting and whatnot...
I currently have ICS installed on my US Wifi Xoom. It has been rooted after the last update before JB, but is using the stock ROM otherwise.
What I'm wondering first is: Do I NEED to unroot before attempting the OTA update to JB, or is it just recommended? And then after I update to JB, do I use the same method to root? I believe I used this guide: http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/mot...ooting-flashing-unrooting-under-one-roof.html

You don't have to unroot to receive the ota. Get vodoo ota root keeper app it will protect root during the update

The Universal Root Method does not work on 4.1.1 does anyone have a fix.....

ok,,after many tries i finally figured a way to get to stock rooted Jb with the Ota...it was a long process but i was able to do it.
step 1. i re flashed the xoom stock images HC 3.0
step 2. update the xoom from 3.0 to 4.0.4 using the over the air updates.
step 3. fastboot flash the eos r6 recovery while still on 4.0.4
step 4 create a nandroid of the stock 4.0.4 system
step 5. install the Universal Xoom root zip
step 6. log into google account to have access to market
step 7 update superuser app, download ota rootkeeper
step 8 use ota and create a copy of su, then click temp unroot
IMPORTANT
make sure that you have a copy of the jelly bean ota on your internal sd(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736634)
step 9 turn off xoom, then boot into eos recovery
NEXT FEW STEPS ARE CRUCIAL
step 10 choose advance restore from internal (not regular restore option) and select the nandroid of the stock 4.0.4
step 11 select the option to restore only the boot.img
step 12 now install the JB Ota ( when it boots you will lose the eos reovery and the stock recovery will be flashed back,, so you can always fastboot flash back the eos recovery, just make sure to delete the recovery boot.p file in the system folder using root explorer or something similar.)
step 13 once you have flashed the JB ota, boot back into android, open the ota rootkeeper app and restore the su,, then use titanium backup or some other root app to verify that you have root.
optional step 14 after verifying that you do indeed have root access perform a factory wipe so you can start fresh. that's what i did and all was good.

edit : if you are on a stock 4.0.4 than you can continue from step 3 as basically you need to be there in order to follow the rest.

I used the method above with one minor change and it worked perfectly. In place of step 12, I powered down and then booted into fastboot and flashed the stock recovery image. After that I rebooted and was then able to accept the JB 4.1.1 OTA directly without having to download and install it manually. The statement in parenthesis in step 12 still applies.

Based on your steps it sounds like the only real important piece is the rooted boot.img file from ICS.
If someone were to post it, I'd imagine people could simply do this for rooting JB
fastboot oem unlock (unlock bootloader if not already done)

No guarantees this would work, but in theory it seems right to me.

Honestly not really a big surprise. Things change and what security flaw that allowed rooting on previous versions of Android for a device may be patched in future releases.

Okay completed this method and worked fine.
I also on step 12 flashed the stock recovery then performed the update through OTA and after verifying ROOT access with Titanium Backup I OEM unlocked which wipes the device but not Root Access. Its a lot OTA's but a good way to keep root on JellyBean 4.1.1.....

After doing the traditional root method, flash the latest super user using cwr, that is what i did and i now have root.

Yes, i have been on official 4.1.1 for 2 weeks now, i say official because i updated via OTA.

yep, just install the drivers, unlock the bootloader, install a recovery (i used twrp), then flash supersu. go over to the android development folder and there are toolkits there. im running stock rooted right now.

you dont have to unlock the bootloader or flash a recovery to root. just run "fastboot boot recovery.img" itll boot the alternative recovery, and you can flash the super user zip from there. it will only boot twrp or cwm but not flash it to the device and will not replace the stock recovery.
unlocking the bootloader just allows you to write to the boot partition and boot different recoveries and kernels from the device. it does set off a tamper flag which could void your warranty. but unlocking is not required for modifying the system partition which is what you are doing when you root.

You can install OTA updates even with a TWRP installed. You just have to untick the CM Recory option from Settings -> Developer Settings -> CM Recovery
What that does it tells the OTA update not to update your recovery when the option is unticked. If you leave the tick on, then every OTA will relock your bootloader and install CM recovery.
But all in all, OTAs work fine with root + twrp

That won't let you keep root, though it's easy to flash SuperSU from TWRP after every OTA.
A solution to OP's problem could be SuperSU Pro which lets you keep root even after OTA updates. I haven't tested it yet but the option is there.

I unlocked my device, then booted into twrp via adb, then flashed supersu but i have no root. the app is installed but i cannot grand titanium backup for example root rights. so the root process did not worked but why? tried it severall times and downloaded everything from scratch sever times. no chance. help me pls..

Nevermind, I found the solution. I had to disable a Option in SuperSU settings because the CM comes not rooted from out of the box

im not sure people have really tried. youre welcome to give it a shot as it says its possibly compatible with everything. but theres already a root method that doesnt require bootloader unlocking and installs supersu which is most peoples favorite root manager.

Towelroot is incredibly simple I get a little nervous otherwise.. Is there a tutorial on the easy alternative, I only want titanium backup to restore my apps from s4 (considering I can do that)

Where is the option to "keep root after OTA" in SU?

I managed to boot the twrp recovery on 4.4.2..but updated to 4.4.4 33R and now it says SU binaries not installed...also cant boot recovery on fastboot as it says need to unlock the bootloader?
Why did update prevent this now?

Did you untick the option to update CM recovery during your update?

I didnt untick it no, but i never flashed the custom recovery in the first place as i just booted it up from fastboot on 25R, on 33R however its been disabled and requires unlocked bootloader.

Hi,
I unlocked bootloader before installing 22R and updated 25, 30, 33 & 38R with OTA from 'System updates' menu. After 38R i flashed TWRP recovery and rooted my phone without unlocking the phone again & its working fine. Perhaps, the we don't need to unlock bootloader again once it unlocked. Can anyone confirm it??

I'm pretty confused about the way CF auto root works. some say it breaks OTAs some say it doesn't affect the recovery so it won't break OTAs. can anyone here please explain me if I'll still get OTAs after rooting my all stock 5.0 Nexus 5 by Chainfire's Auto Root method? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No you won't get OTA.
In 4.4, if you had root and stock recovery, you could still get OTA. In 5.0, root makes changes that prevent OTA. on 5.0, ANY changes prevent OTA

You need to be full, 100% stock.

I too was rooted with CF and stock recovery.
To be able to sideload the OTA I had to:
1) download and extract the 5.0 factory image
2) fastboot flash boot boot.img
3) fastboot flash system system.img
4) adb sideload The5_0_1OTA.zip
The CF root process modifies one or both of boot and/or system. The 5.0.1 OTA will not apply with these modified.
The above process will not lose data.

I just got my Shield Tablet and rooted it. I keep getting two OTA notifications, one says ROM Update the other says Tegra Update. Will I keep root of I do the OTA updates?
I'd like to get a recovery added, but it seems that all the recoveries are incomplete. Is there a method to install recovery without a separate computer?

You can try the paid version of SuperSU to preserve root or the THT Rootkeeper (the other big root keeper doesn't work past 4.2) If you update the device to the official OTA, you will need a PC to reflash the recovery but you will not need to unlock the bootloader again.

So just to clarify, I have a 6045I factory global unlocked from Amazon, It has never been rooted, bootloader unlocked, nothing. So would I place on SD and apply update through stock recovery, or is there a different method? Really just want root for adaway and xposed. TWRP would be nice, but not necessary. Just don't want a new paperweight. Thanks!

You can try windroid toolkit v3.1.
First u have to unlock bootloader then to flash recovery and supersu .
For me it is not recognising my phone hope u will get success.

I downloaded twice, and twice got security that windroid 3.1 has trojan, and was quarantined!?!

For me it got downloaded but showing device either offline or unauthorized

I'd run a full virus /malware scan.... I use 360 Security on mobile devices and PC's. It, along with SUPERAntiSpyware has served me well.

Just install the TWRP 3.0 in android development (it has instructions in the thread) and then you can flash the supersu mentioned.

Well the obvious choices are:
1) Use mobile Q to restore to 5.0.2...unlock bootloader, install twrp....upgrade to marshmallow using the modified update.zip that doesn't wipe recovery and finally root using the file mentioned.
or
2) Live with it as it is until someone figures out how to restore fastboot which will probably still require downgrading.

I am waiting some days otherwise i will downgrade
BTW my device is recognized in fastboot but commands not working. It means fastboot is working but commands have been changed

That's the problem. This phone is totally stock with nothing done but the update. I literally charged it, turned it on and 20 minutes later 6.0.1 was nagging for install, which I did. There is now the OEM unlock switch in developing options, but I don't know where to start, or flash.

You must go back to 5.0 to install and then update it because in 6.0.1 update Removes Fastboot commands so you can't install it twrp....

I have a problem with rooting 6039Y on rom 6.0.1 by persona78. Stock rom 5.0.2 and root working fine. When i flash via TWRP after the update to MM i get this message:
-Cheking patch status
---Already patched, attempting to find stock backup
---Stock restore failed, attempting ramdisk restore
---Ramdisk restore failed, aborting
This solution - echo SYSTEMLESS=true >> /data/.supersu - not working.
Phone was simlock removed via furiousgold, maybe this is a problem?

full unlocked with unlocked bootloader and sim free (single sim model) with 6.0.1 from alcatel not updated to 6.0.1 already i got with 6.0.1 from alcatel (i know you will say "but that phone has 5.0 and updated to 6.0.1 trough a phone update online" But it is not updated ,phone came directly from factory and how i can root this device if there is any help.

I used this guide to flash twrp then used twrp to root on stock 6045O 6.0.1.
