Ok so I originally started on Hangouts like everyone else but slowly realized that the compatibility with iMessage and Group messages involving iPhone users is sub par. I downloaded the MMS.apk from the Themes and Apps section and now I can group message with no problem at all. The issue I'm having involves sending and receiving GIFs. I know that android doesn't support GIFs but with the new Hangouts it was supposed to. Is there any way to pass along that compatibility to the MMS.apk?
Thanks in advance!

Unless you plan doing the development and building the APK yourself, you can't just expect MMS.apk GIFs to work by some easy method

I was hoping to see if anyone had found a solution. I had done a search but because of the common search terms I got way too many unwanted hits. Ideally I'd love to see Hangouts group messaging work better.

I have officially exhausted all my searching resources.
I am running CM7.1 and have played with the build.prop as well as APN settings and found decent success in data speeds and overall connectivity.
However, for the past few weeks I am unable to send ONE contact any text messages. I can receive his, and I can send/receive to everyone else that I have tried, but he does not receive my texts.
Has anyone ever seen/heard of/experienced this? He is on Verizon without a smart phone and I am on AT&T but I can't see how that would be relevant. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Search the Q&a section also the general forum. This is a known cm7 issue. Its always good to search before posting.

Any recommendation for a certain chain of keywords to produce these results? I am certainly willing to admit that I searched for the wrong things but this was no spurious thread creation. I've been looking for a few weeks now.

I do appreciate your willingness to post.
Just to clarify:
I can text others and receive text messages just fine
This is NOT the problem with sending/receiving messages over 160 characters
Only one contact is not receiving my text messages
I am using the stock messaging app. NOT Handcent.
This does not appear to be a known issue with CM7. At least not one documented in a way that I can find it. I HAVE found documented issues with (a) not receiving ANY text messages, (b) sending blank/garbled messages, especially over 160 characters, and (c) using Handcent, Google Voice for text messages, etc.
I will re-read the CM Q&A as per your suggestion, but I think the threads you are thinking of are not relevant to my particular issue.
Does anyone know if its possible for us android users to respond "to all" when iphone users send us a group text? Or even see who's involved in the group text? I've searched and searched and don't think there is a way so I figured Id ask here in case someone knew of a way.

Whatsapp.. That should work. Dunno. Don't use official texting. Whatsapp should work though.
And tell them to get Android. Make fun of them. Show the beautiful widgets. Then tell them to show you a beautiful weather animation on their homescreen. In they pull down the Android rip off pull down tell them it's weak, full screen. It should be easy, you know. On your little dinky screen.

Trust me. I've done literally everything you just listed. I've been an Apple user since the first gen Iphone up until the Iphone 4. Whatapp does work but the Apple user has to download it as well. I'm trying to see if I can connect with their native group text. I guess that's impossible at this point since we cant cross platforms yet. Similar to BBM on blackberries. If there is anyone with any ideas, please share.
Currently we are using Voxer which is pretty neat. However, the iphone user still needs to download it.

I'm looking for the same solution. Does anyone know of an app that allows android phones to see iphone group chats as group chats rather than breaking everything down into individual text messages that way we can do a reply all rather than having to send the same message to everyone that is in the group? Thanks.
There's plenty of apps that do this. 8sms is my favorite.

Thanks for your help. I've installed the app and it looks nice. I still need to test it out to make sure it works with group text messages with iphones. But I'll update this post once I'm able to confirm that it does or does not work. Thanks

Android 4.2 messaging app does it natively now. And there's also the new Hangouts which allows for group messaging.
Android 2.3.6- 4.0.4 I've used NinjaSMS and can can confirm it works with group messaging. Again, there's also the new Hangouts app.

I'm currently trying NinjaSMS. Hangouts didn't work for my phone. I couldn't send or receive MMS which appears to be a known problem with a few phones. In addition, the 8sms app which was suggest to me also didn't work. It broke up their iphone group text to an indiviual text from each person. Therefore I still had to reply individually to everyone in the group. I'll let you know if NinjaSMS works for me.
Sorry in advance if this has specifically been addressed. Doing a quick search didn't seem to cover it.
Is it possible for the experts here in XDA to write something into Android's code to allow for a Reply All feature in SMS, like in iPhone's SMS? I'm thinking the Reply All feature must be unfixable because there is conversations all over the internet for people requesting Google to fix it. Some have even stayed with Apple because they would miss that feature too much.
And why you're at it, build in emoticons. The emoticons are only available in 3rd party apps, like GoSMS Pro and Handcent, as far as I know.

Addressing the second question here...
Which emoticons are you referring to? You can already use all the regular emotes in an SMS. ;-)
You might want to take a look at alernative keyboards to make your emoticon chatting a little easier (swiftkey has quick buttons for emotes, for example).

This is not the place to request features. if what you are looking for is in gosms, use it. Not to come off as a d*ck but this isnt burger king, they dont have your rom your way right away.
If you were find code that would be usable for this feature, it would be a better way to present your request.
Ranting aside, i believe gosms also has the reply all feature if im not mistaken. Im not sure as i dont have an iphone to compare with. But i do use gosms as my sms replacement.

First off, I'm not requesting anything special in a ROM. My question was that if any of the bright developers have the knowledge to incorporate some of the emoticons into stock mms. Perhaps I should have stated emoji and not emoticons. The ones I'm referring to ARE the ones you find in GoSMS and Handcent, but it would be nice to just use the stock app instead of a 3rd party app to be able to get those. The ones those replying above are referring to basic emoticons (I know, I probably was asking for the wrong things) that can be type in using symbols. I too have been using GoSms and Handcent for the past 2 1/2 years and know that the Reply All feature in GoSMS will respond to all, but send out individual messages, thus breaking the conversation.
Maybe iPhone uses a code that isn't native to Android because I know those 2 platforms steal all they can from each other as it is.

By the way, where would YOU request features? There doesn't seem to be a dedicated forum for that and you're implying there is a place if this isn't it.

I don't personally because i know well what the devs go through to get a rom out and be proud of it just to hear 'well can you do this?'. The best place would be a specific roms Q/A thread, because if you post in general then lets say optimistically 3 rom developers add the feature for you, you are only going to use one rom, thus 2 of the devs just wasted their time. Also it is far easier to just get an app that does what you want instead of bloating up android with moogly eye faces. Android after all is extremely modular and is all just a collection of apps. so asking to 'build in' is really just modifying an app so you dont have to spend 30secs to download one. like i said, if gosms does what you want, download it. because being that bloaty isnt for everyone so its easier to just leave it stock and let users download what they want to add to their phones.

might also work better since you are looking for features that would not be phone specific.

Thanks for the link. I'll post my Reply All question over there and see if I get any responses.
Hello, I am running CleanRom 5.6 on my verizon galaxy sIII and everything is working great. However I have one problem. The stock message app works great but it does not allow for group test message to show up on one message i.e. you get individual message instead of getting one single message. I solved this by installing go sms pro or handcent. NOw the problem that I am having is that when people send me a .gif image file I can see the picture but it is not moving. I have tried opening under the stock text app, go sms pro, and handcent but no one them work. At have had it working a few time but the majority of times it does not work i.e. the image does not move. I have searched online a lot but there is no one consensus on how to fix this problem. I hope someone know what I am talking about and can help me because I am not the only one who is having the problem. Thank you.
p.s. I do not know whether the problem is being caused by an iphone user sending the .gif file or whether that does not matter.

Im not 100% sure here but pretty sure the Android OS doesnt fully support .gif anymore at least? seems like alot of people cant only get the first frame of a gif to run on their phones now.

I would also love this... I think the ball is in googles court on this one and I'm very sad about it.. Does hangouts offer the option for client support? If not then we will have to wait for an official release from Google which will probably never happen

I will take a look at it. Google does not open api for it, so there won't be standalone app. Is it enough if you can send messages to your friends? And no, I'm not talking about replying to a notification. You can send new message when you want to

With 3G it doesn't really feel like you're tethered. What is a tease though is you know your watch is capable of acquiring all the messages for both hangouts and Whatsapp bc if you hit "View more" it downloads the entire conversation. If only you could cache that and re-open it at a later time...even that would be a huge improvement. If only I had more time to tinker :crying:

Agreed, it seems like they engineered a solution but didn't think it necessary to provide it as a feature.
Perhaps our resident S2 developer tipztv could use this to hack a solution for standalone hangouts and whatsapp too!
