My SGS4 Melted Last Night :( - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

I woke up this morning and rolled over to grab my phone off the nightstand and was shocked to find that the phone was sitting in a small puddle of water and the USB port and cable were melted. There was a message in the status bar saying "High Powered USB Device Connected" and the phone had not charged. The phone will not recognize any USB cables either. The USB port is simply dead.
The water came from my CPAP machine which for some reason leaked a little last night. The water got in between the battery and back cover and must have shorted something out. Bummer.....
Called AT&T and they said that the warranty doesn't cover this damage (didnt tell them about the water though) because it could have came from a power surge in the home. Also, I don't have insurance on the phone and I do not have any upgrades available on my family plan AND I cannot add another line to my account without changing my family plan which would mean that I would lose my unlimited data plan which I'm grandfathered into. Im screwed....
Temporary Solution! - Galaxy S4 Spare Battery w/ Charger
I ran down to Frys Electronics here in town and they had 1 in stock. Now I can swap batteried daily (pain in the A$$) but it's my only option at this point short of buying another phone out right.
I have an SD card so I can still swap ROMS and stuff but I cannot go back to stock via Odin if I ever desired that.
Lessons Learned - Always buy insurance on your phone & dont charge next to a humidifier or water tank.

you can use a wireless receiver and charger it's not as fast as the oem Wall charger but still good at 640mah charge.

I'll sell ya my S4 with custom recovery for a good price. Hit me up!

Damn man, that's tough. Definitely try replacing the usb port before scrapping the phone. You can get it off ebay for < $20.

Yea I thought about that but the plastic around the port is melted and warped so badly that I dont know if I will even be able to get a USB cable in there. It's worth a shot through. Maybe I can smooth it out with a very small Dremel tool

Damn, I didn;t know I had that option. I Googled and found this but it's for the GT-i9505 but I assume since they are basically the same phone that it would fit. I couldnt find an "AT&T" one.

I always use spare batteries, I have 4 spares, it's way better than chargering. Post a video about it on YouTube. Someone else's s4 charger burned up their phone and Samsung got all butthurt and then Nokia sent them a new phone because Samsung tried to bury it. I don't charge my phone because IF I need the port I'll have it so I don't take the chance of ruining it.

Join the club buddy, I left mine on the charger 1 night for about 5hours and roll over out of bed picked it up only to burn my hand, after I drop my S4 because it was so hot, I find that half the screen was burned but still viewable, SIM card melted in the slot and the plastic slightly bent. Took it to a at&t repair center and they swapped it out on the spot. No question asked.

is there a way to replace jaw connector??
If the jaw connector is not broken you should be able to put back into place. If it is broken then you will not be able to fix this.

Yes sadly you will not have any other option. Sometimes you can rig something to hold the cable in place, but that is normally just a temp fix.
Thanks for the instructions.
I did not have to change the display but bent my USB connector in shape again. Connection was loose to a point where connection
was very intermittent. Luckily the soldered connections were still in good shape!
I buried my plans to re-flow them as my soldering needle (@ 900degF) could not put a dent in that gum/glue they put on the soldering points!

Glad to hear we could help!
After replacing a broken screen(the phone was working fine after the screen was broken), I can't get the phone to charge. The phone doesn't work with a cm7 ROM either, after booting it shows android system at the top with a black screen and the notification bar then shuts off. Froyo ROMs work fine but won't charge and the usb connection to computer still works. In about it will show not charging wen it's not plugged in and discharging when it is plugged into ac or usb. With the phone off when I plug it in it shows the red led at the top like its charging for say 5 seconds then it shows a battery with a temp gauge in the middle of it and everything goes black again. I've tried opening it back up and reseating the cables but same thing, also tried two batteries both of which were working fine before replacing the screen.
Any ideas?

Have you checked if the charging port is damaged? If it is not the charger or battery, that is another possibility.
Repair and MEID or MSN
I am going to repair my Motorola Triumph and may scrap parts from another broken phone. I don't want to accidentally replace anything that will effect my MEID or MSN number though. Is this located on the motherboard with the sd card input or the other half that is attached to the LCD screen and touch screen. The main reason I ask is that I am still under the original contract at Virgin Mobile and getting a cheap monthly rate and I don't want them to say I upgraded phones and bump my fee up.
Thanks!

The bottom half of your motherboard should contain your MEID and your phone's identity. Is there anything else wrong with it? I would install your entire original motherboard to avoid any complications.

I ended up piecing together the best parts from a couple phones that I got real cheap. I must have tweaked the LCD in the process cause the screen has a green tint to it. May just need some calibration that I don't know how to do but the "Filter Your Screen" app takes the green out well enough. I do loose the maximum brightness though. Oh well, keeps my cheap phone working for now and I can make do until I can get a better one.
Thanks for your input.

I'm glad to hear at least it is functioning for you! Do you have another LCD to test your motherboard with? Did use heat to take off the digtizer? Too much heat might cause discoloration.

I did not have to heat the digitizer, I just took it with the connected body/frame from a parts phone and then the LCD screen and Motherboard from my phone, which I must have bent it or something. Either that or Cygenomod 7 on the new screen is causing a color issue. Who knows I could always get another cheap one off flea bay and just put my motherboard in it.

[Q] ICS Soft brick. I need an adult. :(

So I'm kind of stuck. I was on the ICS OTA update (stupid move, I know) and I attempted to flash to CM10 (probably an equally stupid move), and the flash proceeded for awhile, but ended up failing. So now I can't access bootstrap, and I'm essentially stuck in a soft brick. In Fastboot flash mode I can't get it to connect via USB, so there's no real hope of FXZing to anything as far as I know.
Do I just call it quits, or is there something I can do? :| I need an adult.
Kay, a little more info is required.
You're on the official OTA? If so, you're stuck mate. There are a couple of semi writing ways to get out of this, you just gotta search and read.
This is why we recommend against the ota update man.

Yeah, I OTA'ed to the official without thinking, before I checked the forums. Wasn't even thinking about the fact that there might not be an fxz.
I've been reading up and researching for a couple hours, but I still can't find a way to get it to connect via USB in fastboot. :| Have you come across anything that might actually help? Realistically I think it's still under warranty, and we have an AT&T wireless device help center thing here that does same day warranty exchanges, so I think I'm probably just going to go there tomorrow and tell them my phone died during the OTA update and now it won't turn on all the way. Does that sound believable at all? haha They're usually pretty lenient anyway, I got a warranty replacement there on my Atrix 1 and they gave me a bad battery, and when I came back in do get a replacement the guy noticed I was running CM7, and said something jokingly about how "yeah the battery was bad, but the ****ty CM7 port probably didn't help much". lol

I don't know why it wouldn't be working in fastboot. try reinstalling drivers if you are on windows.
If you can get an exchange do it, just play dumb, and you'll be fine. I hardbricked when the first ICS hell hit (kind of on purpose, I had a problem that they would not replace for) testing some stuff for how to get back, and I brought it in and just acted sad and said I took it off the charger and it wouldn't turn on. I had a new one in a week.
P.S. I have done much stupider things, so don't worry, you are far from alone.
Thats acually the same thing I said when I flashed the razr developer edition of mbmloader. Just say that the OTA failed and trust me in order to get a new phone
Cheers and good luck!!!

Attempt at your own risk:
Take out the phone's battery, and find a couple of lead wires with small alligator clips on both ends. Then, attach the negative black lead wire to a 12v lantern battery (you can find these just about anywhere) and to the negative terminal of the phone. Then attach the positive red lead wire to the battery, and then just touch the end of the positive lead wire to your phone's positive terminal - only takes a second. This will fry the motherboard completely, and it will never turn on. Contact Motorola via their website and open a warranty exchange ticket. They'll send you an email with a shipping label to print, affix to your shipping box, and just drop it off to any FedEx pickup location. I got mine back in less than a week.

Also if you have a car battery charger, set it at a 2AMP charge and connect it the same way ^^, for a min or 2 and it will all be over... it does not matter what phone you have that will do the job just fine. If you send a phone that only needs 2 volts to charge, a 14 volt 2 amp signal, it will be dead. Just make sure the battery is not in the phone when you do this, that will be VERY bad.
I am just saying, and do this very carefully, this can hurt you, if not done correctly.
I wasn't daring enough to follow those steps, so I decided to be creative and use this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935485
Essentially, I did everything but flash the OTA. It didn't fix my issue completely, but it did stop my phone from showing the CyanogenMod logo. I then called AT&T and asked for a replacement I told them that the OTA stopped my phone from booting. They gave me free priority shipping and it arrived this morning (ordered yesterday afternoon).

My Touchstone charging case hack [UPDATE: Not Recommended]

IMPORTANT UPDATE: After a month of running this, I have concluded that the Palm components are not compatible with this phone. I was getting frequent reboots and eventually some instability of my phone. A couple of times my phone went temporarily dead and would not revive until I plugged it into the wall. I'm leaving this up in case others want to try it, but be aware you may be asking for trouble.
Lots of people have hacked the Palm Touchstone inductive charging setup for their phones, but I've seen nothing specific for the One XL. I used this thread by android94301 to get started. It's good for background and applies for the One X up until he starts putting it in the SIII back. Go and read the OP, as I won't repeat much of it.
I used the charging case approach because I did not want to open up my phone or make any permanent modifications to it. I wanted something simple, removable, and non-destructive. I used a TPU case because a) it's flexible enough to accomodate the charging coil and b) it's what I had. Plenty of other cases ought to work.
I would not advise attempting this project unless you're pretty handy with a soldering iron. You have to solder all the parts together or your won't get a good connection, and it's hard enough even then.
The Touchstone base will not work with a phone charging cord or the USB port in your computer because it needs more than 0.5A. It will, however, work with a tablet charger--at least it worked with my Nexus 7 charger--so if you've got a spare, you can save a few bucks and use that.
What you'll need:
-a charging back from a Pre or Pixi--I used the Pixi; be aware the Pre coil has the polarity reversed.
-a soldering iron
-some thin wire. I used two different colors to keep the polarity straight.
-some method of keeping the leads in contact with the pogo connectors.
-a multimeter to check your work. You'll want to repeatedly check whether you're getting 5V from the charging coil, because it needs to be aligned correctly with the base.
-a utility knife, wire cutters, and small needle nosed pliers
1. Start by carefully removing the coil assembly from the back. Peel the tape off, and keep the silver tape--you'll need it later. Using a sharp knife, very carefully pry the coil up from the adhesive. Pry out the four metal discs (be careful here--the Pixi back is quite flimsy, and I ended up punching the precision screwdriver I was using through the back and into my finger).
2. Once you've got everything free, place the case on the base and arrange the coil and discs so everything is in position. Check voltage with your multimeter. (Note: I ended up reversing the arrangement of the coil in the final version--it doesn't make a difference which way it goes.)

}
3. On the copper tape attached to the coil, you'll see two square contacts. Solder a wire to each one. On the Pixi, the contact at the end is + and the other one is -. Note that in this photo, red is + and black is -.
4. This should take you 10 minutes, tops. Now comes the tough part. By far the hardest part of this hack was getting a good connection with the pogo contacts. I came up with a workable approach, but you may want to try something else. Whatever it is, it needs to keep pressure on the leads to keep them in contact. Simply taping the leads to the contacts does not work, however.
What you see here is a piece of circuit board cut from an old 2.5" SATA hard drive adapter. I used it to fabricate a little pogo pin board by removing all but two of the connecters with my soldering iron. I pushed the remaining two through the board a bit further after melting the solder, then soldered the leads to the pins. You may note that the wires are reversed from the previous photo--this is because I accidentally soldered them in the wrong arrangement on the board, and immediately after this realization, the black wire broke off the coil. So I just unsoldered the red one and reattached them so the board would get the correct polarity. Again, check your work throughout this process to be sure you're getting a charge at the final connection.
5. Tape or hot glue everything into place. I taped my pogo board directly onto my phone just to make it easier.
This isn't quite the final product. I'm going to move it to an opaque case, and I'm going to try shaving down the pins on the pogo board because it's a bit thicker than I'd like. Still, it all works.
hmm, your images are broken.
Or they require a dropbox account I guess.

Hmm, that sucks.
That might explain why no one replied lol.
I've done the same thing ( buy a touchstone and a pre back)
I've gotten to the stage that the circuit board is removed from the phone back and I've soldered on 2 wires.
I'm having real difficulty trying to get a reliable connection to the pogo pins as they are so small and in a stupid place!
Would really like to see your photos to give me some inspiration but I can't. Any ideas?

I'm going to try to fix the links. I thought they were working because I can see them fine, but that's probably because I'm logged into Dropbox.
Edit: I think they're fixed. Someone let me know if they're still broken.
Their fixed, I can see them clearly. A question on inductive charging... It's wireless charging right but what is it charging from? In the last picture I don't see a pad or anything

The Touchstone base. It's actually quite small. Maybe 2" round and 1" high. Not much bigger than the coil in the first pic.
Someone who knows what there doing should make some of these and sell em.

It wouldn't be that hard. You can get pins that are designed for pogo contacts for next to nothing, and building a little contact board for them wouldn't be complicated. I just went with what I had because I didn't feel like waiting on another parts order.
Update:
After a week or so on this thing, I'm mostly happy but I have noticed one interesting thing. It charges fine up to around 90-05%, but it simply won't charge to full. Once it gets over 90% or so, it starts waking up every few minutes but never gets to 100%.
I think what may be going on is that the chip controlling the voltage from the induction coil is not completely optimized for this phone (which should hardly be surprising). So when it goes to trickle charge as it gets close to being full, the chip gets confused and stops the current, then kicks it back on when the phone keeps drawing on it. This causes the phone to wake up as the charges goes off and back on again. This cycle keeps repeating, thus preventing it from ever reaching full charge.
It's not a big deal for me as the difference between 100% and 95% is not that significant. Still, if you like everything to work perfectly, this may not be the mod for you.

Do you see the phone flipping between charging and not charging? I wonder if that's what I was seeing when I tried it on my phone. I was always nearly fully charged. I wasn't sure if it was my phone being picky or if there was something wrong with the charger. Same thing happens in my car charger too.

I haven't watched it closely enough. It just seems to wake up repeatedly while sitting next to me on my desk.
Okay no worries, I'll try it again when the battery is a bit lower and see if it responds.
So no dice on the low battery test. I guess my phone is just picky
I tried this afternoon. In fact, it rebooted when I left it on the battery screen to see what would happen. I've had this happen more than once, and I'm starting to suspect the mod is responsible. It only happens when the phone gets up to 95% or so.
I would be careful about that car charger, if it seems to be inducing issues. At least two people I know of have had their phones hard brick while on their car charger.

Is that a Pre back? Looks like the power contacts are those two metal squares on the right.
Hi i'm sorry but it looks like the images are broken again. Can you maybe email them to me/pm or something? Really want to try this out...
This seems fairly straightforward
However, did you consider putting the coil in the actual One XL body? I have no idea how thick the coil and/or controlboard is, so I have no idea if that would even fit remotely.
It would also solve the pogopin problem, as there are some pads you can solder to (where the pogopin board is) inside the casing.
I just hate cases

iRiver Qi Charger?

Found this on ebay, searched and didnt see a thread on it in here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-iRiver-...61833?pt=Battery_Chargers&hash=item3ccf66d989
All of the details are in Korean(?) so I cant read any of the details and its all in an image so I cant even copy + paste into Google Translate.
I see that this seller has sold 6 of them... wondering if anyone on here bought one?

Interesting, Not bad.
(oh and btw yeah that's Korean)
i remember the name iRiver from like 10-15 years ago with MP3 players & computer CD-Roms... but I dont know if its the same company.
Can anyone read Korean that can translate it?
I can read Korean.
they say Nexus 4 can be fully charged in 4 hours.
---------- Post added at 12:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:54 PM ----------
yeh iRiver is a quality Korean company. if it is legit product from them, it should be good.
Looks like a flat orb
60 bux pls 10USD shipping is pretty steep for a non OEM product. But if it works, why not eh? Anyone buy one yet?
And I have ordered a few things from Korea and it takes a bit of time to get it delivered to USA. Last item I got took 12 days to get to me.
iRiver? Is this the same company that made all those mp3 players? I thought they had disappeared for good after smartphones took over.

yup, same company as far as i can tell... but it could be like Polaroid where they went under and another company bought them just for their name.
Really 60 isnt too bad though considering the prices of other changers (assuming this thing is actually decent) The Metrans, Panasonic, LG, Energizer & Anker ones are all $60 + shipping. Its only the unbranded ebay ones that are like 35-40 and they dont seem to work as well.
I have ordered. Should arrive next week. Will give guys some review.

Awesome, can't wait to hear your review. I ordered the orb for home but I want a pad like this for at work. Make sure to take pics too!
This looks great, just a shame that its adapter powered only...would have been great if you could use this with a MicroUSB.
Just got the charger.
Black one.
Having it just for 1 hour. First impressions:
Wow, this thing is well made. You can feel the quality. It has almost the same corner finishing like N4 has. I mean metal-plastic border. So it looks awesone with N4 on top of it.
review:
* Size is like regular CD.
* It is not high.
* It has wavy top, for the heat to come out.
* The top has soft touch, but it's still a little slippery for my naked nexus4.
* It has 3 very low green lights on top, while in charge - they blink.
* You don't need to be extremelly specific where to put phone for charge, but the charging coll is in the middle, so it's best if you put the phone right on it.
* It does not give you any sounds!!! (manual says it has small beep, but haven't managed to trigger it )
* I am not sure, but it feels like it has some magnet inside, and once the phone is close to the charger, you can feel phone is attracted.
* It charges pretty quick. 1 hour - ~ 30% charged.
* The charge distance is pretty big, I can charge my N4 inside leather bugatti pouch. Tried to lift the phone it charged even phone was ~ 1cm away form the top of the charger. Works with OEM bumber, and silicone case as well.
* Adapter power only
* Update the post while it will finish first charger
Overall: Happy with the charger. Will definitely keep it. Will use at work and maybe order LG small one for home
Some pictures:
Couple of quick questions as a friend is interested in this charger...How long was shipping from korea and can you update if it charges to 100% as indicated on your nexus 4 and what happens if you leave your nexus 4 on it (light indicators etc) does the charger switch off and automatically start charging again after a certain time and are the lights annoyingly bright?.Thanks

1. shipped on 03/06/2013 got it on 03/22/2013 destination Lithuania, Europe. Packed very well.
2. lights are not annoying, they are 3 of them and located on the corners, but they are under the top. Light green light...
let you know the charging test results
update:
1. charging reached 100%. N4 stated - charged. Lights still blinking
2. lights stopped blinking - stay on green, phone discharges, charging does not start. You need to take and put down the phone for start charge again.
I think this is OK. Or do you expect the charger to charge even 1% dropped?
Hope this helps.
Usually it will drop to about 96% then start charging again. Can you leave it on a bit longer and see if it starts up again.
What is the output current on the charger?
Also the seller raised the price to 65 + 10 shipping.
Hi, was wondering if this charger will trickle charge to keep the phone around 100% or will turn off until the phone is put back on the pad.
Thanks!
It keeps n4 100%

Hm, contradictory statements.
So, guys, do you confirm, that it indeed supports trickle charging? I need my phone to stay 100% charged as long as it is on the pad.
If it starts to discharge as soon as 100% is reached and doesn't turn charging back on later (when charge drops to 90-97%), then, I assume, it doesn't have one?!

[Q] M8 No longer charging. Any options?

I bought the M8 six months ago and loved it to death. Nothing was wrong with the phone.
Suddenly the battery quit taking a charge from any charger plugged into it. I went to Verizon to get it resolved but the only option was to send it to a hokey cell phone repair type place who wouldn't give me a quote on the cost to fix it.
I just purchased a new charger port (the board that includes the audio out port and ribbon cable) that will be shipped next week. The phone is already apart and the offending part removed.
Figuring it could be some solder joints that got yanked loose at some point and I was already going to replace the part, I baked the old part at 385 F for 6 minutes. No luck.
Are there any other options for charging my battery? I'm talking physically charging the battery directly. Is this possible? Are there any other options for me to charge this brick until I get my replacement part? Also, is it possible the charger port isn't even my issue?
EDIT: I figure it's important to know this: The phone is completely dead. I can't get anything at all to show on the screen. No charging light. Power+Volume up for any length of time does nothing, as does power+volume up+volume down.

Did it just flat out die one day or did you try charging it while it was still only to notice it not actually charging. If it's totally ran down and you fixed the port, it could take up to twenty minutes until you see the charge light.

I was having a couple issues a little while back where it would take significant persuasion to get the thing to charge. That's why I figure it's the port. At some point the phone died and since then it hasn't charged. I left it on the charger for over 5 hours hoping to get something. Nope. I haven't replaced the port yet, the new port comes next week. If it's the port I'm all good. In the mean time, I want to know if there's any way I could get this existing junk port to work somehow.
Been without a phone for a week now. Didn't realize how much I needed it until it died.

I took a good look at the teardown of this phone the other day. Did you repeat the ribbon cable once or twice? Look inside for foreign matter? I would recommend against tinkering until you have the new part. The new part is your most logical approach and will be easy to test.

Do you mean repeat the cable as in unlatch it, remove it, and relatch it? I did that several times in the process of trying to get the board to work. And do you mean inside as in the inside of where the ribbon cable attaches? I haven't done that but I'll be very surprised if there's anything in there. The port itself is completely clean, not bent, no corrosion.
I'm pretty good with soldering and the like because I did micro-pcb assembling for work a while back and other projects. I'm not scared of tearing this board apart (the charger port board, that is).
Oh, and before I forget, what is that aux clip on the left for? I have two aux cables that attach to my charger port board but on my replacement there's only one. I checked part numbers for my phone but everything I've found says it's compatible.

Just by inspection all the brass pieces (if they are brass) could be salvaged and resoldered to the board I bought. The solder pads are all there, they just don't have the part on them.

I would probably verify that charge works using the cable you have coming. Then move that connector over. That way you verify the port issue first.
