I know people may have asked this same question before but I wanted to get some personal opinions.
I am in UK and I can get galaxy s4(16gb) or Nexus 5 at almost same price(32gb). I am aware of the specs of each of the phone.
I like the clean and fast ui of nexus but I can always install a custom rom on s4 to do the same. I like the clean look and feel of the nexus hardware over s4 but s4 has few perks such as the IR blaster and expandable memory card slot and removable battery which I can replace for a bigger battery and also a 13mp camera.(I am an architecture student so I take a lot of pics). I use to have galaxy note 2 and it had a good battery life and good speaker which I have heard is the main problem with nexus 5.
What do you think, should I choose s4 or nexus 5

I don't know how easy it is these days to flash to Samsung phones. Binary counters and what not.
Plus they really pissed me off by not open sourcing their drivers in my Note 1 days.
No ICS buttery smooth experience on CM9 there. And the bloat Samsung packages with their roms is just horrible.
IR blaster is a gimmick, just as a lot of other stuff it has. I wouldn't let that weigh in too much.
The camera is way better though. But I must say if you are going to take architectural pictures the N5 will not disappoint.
Moving subject are, even after the update, hit or miss. But still shots of buildings will look great.
Speaker on the N5 is no problem for me, although I only use it for YouTube videos.
Never used it for voice calls, but I don't expect good quality sound out of any phones speaker.
I would check how easy it is to install CM on the S4. It's probably easy given there is Google Play Edition.
For me physical buttons below the screen are a huge fail. And I will never buy another device that has them.
For the same price, it's a difficult decision. I love the N5 but I think the S4 build quality is a little bit better.

Hi, I used to have a galaxy S4, it was an awesome phone but I switched to N5 and I'm very satisfied with it.
Like you said, N5 has a clean and fast ui compared to S4. Of course you can always have custom roms for that, but all custom AOSP based roms I tried had problems with the camera, especially HDR. So if you want to keep all features and camera quality, you will have to stay on stock ROM or touchwizz base roms, which I personnaly don't like because it isn't as fluid and snappy as AOSP base roms.
Concerning the battery, I have better battery time with the N5 even though it has a 2300mah (vs 2600mah for the S4). But both phones would last a day without charging.
So I would advise you to buy the N5 because the difference between 8 and 13mpx pictures is not huge
The only thing I miss from S4 is the sd card slot !

IMO nexus 5 all the way. First it's generally cheaper. Second, it's a true developer device meaning it's unlocked in all possible ways(except hardware )

I did see a review that said that the N5 did quite a bit better on battery than the S4. Maybe Anandtech
Former S4 user here, really glad I made the switch to the N5. The only thing I miss is the SD card slot. I still wish I could use my 64gb card that is currently just sitting idle. Other than that, the N5 is better in every way.
A big part of the reason I switched is because of all the Knox crap that Samsung is installing on their phones now. It makes the whole rooting/flashing process a much bigger pain in the a$$. Plus, the battery life on my N5 has been at least as good as the S4, if not better. I would definitely advise you to go with the N5.

If you can live with the s600 chip set rather than the 800, I'd say get the s4, as long as it's the 9505 version you can put the gpe edition software on it if that's a concern.

Over saturated colours tend to do that at first glance. If you prefer accurate colours however, it's Nexus 5 all the way. Due to calibrating their screens Google has even given Apple a run for their money in this department.
I went from an S4 to a Nexus 5 and haven't looked back. If you care at all about modding, get the Nexus 5. Samsung makes modding intentionally difficult by locking down the bootloader, and if you happen to screw something up, reflashing the factory firmware requires making a trip to a 'Samsung Experience Shop'. Samsung could easily make their bootloader unlockable, and they could release flashable firmware but they choose not to in order to discourage tinkering and modding. Their loss, as far as I'm concerned they may as well be Apple. With an S4, you're stuck with Touchwiz and a bunch of half-baked, gimmicky features that don't even work. If you really don't want to get the Nexus 5 and you must get a carrier phone, consider the Moto X. At least with the Moto X you get a stock Android user experience and you have the ability to mod.
After using a friend's S4 I have to say I can never use a galaxy phone again. The horribly placed home button and the amoled screen makes me mad. Plus the amoled screen makes everything look almost fake, I prefer accurate colors.
Imho the only phone worth getting over the n5 is the z1. Im a former s3 user and have to say, I could never go back to samsung....
If you do get an s4, ensure its not the exynos version.
Megapixels don't make for a better picture btw

Here I have a S4, note 3 and the Nexus 5.
I bought the Nexus the last because I was bored of all the bloatware from Samsung...
Both Samsung got an awesome camera while the N5 is crap. But I don't really care since I don't take picture. If I need to picture I'll use my Canon.
The Nexus is way more fun to use everyday and it doesn't feel that cheap vs these 700-800$ device.
For the price, you can't go wrong

Took the words right out of my mouth and I had the S4 (octa-lag version). Even with kernel guru Andrei_Lux, it still lagged. It was one of the more disappointing phones I've had in a while. Won't go Samsung again for a long time.
I have both the N5 and Z1 and while I love the N5, the Z1 is better in a number of respects. If i had to chose just one it would be the Z1. for business reasons I require two devices so thankfully i don't have to make choice but I agree with your statement

If you can get an S4 that supports unlocking the boot loader (US AT&T doesn't for example) then I would still consider it a worth while device. Samsung piles on a ton of garbage into the ROM, but as long as you disable the bloat or go with a debated ROM as you mentioned then I had very few complaints. The camera was solid, you can purchase a cheap Qi receiver from Ebay and the battery was definitely better for me.
I still prefer the N5 though. The image stabilization on the camera has made for better low light performance and honestly the camera is still pretty good compared to the S4. The N5 is definitely faster and feels a bit better in the hand. It's not Moto X comfortable, but still really good.
Honestly, it's one of those choices that only you can make. I personally never got really, astonishingly good pictures with the S4 but I think I've gotten decent ones with the N5 so I don't feel like I've lost anything. Battery can be solved with something like the Powerskin Pop'n which I love, and I've yet to feel cramped with the built in 32GB of storage. For me it really boiled down to Samsung's locked boot loaders and slow updates.
I just last week enjoyed destroying my S4 because of a locked bootloader and am using my S2 till I can get the Nexus 5.this phone from all I have read about is super sweet.

If u are architecture student I will suggest try Note 3 in store before decide, spl look Use of S pen.
<3 my nexus 5. Best device I've ever owned, would love to get another.

I've come to realize that the only way to determine whether or not you like a phone is to try it out. I have a second line on my T-Mobile account that I use to test new devices. Yes, it's an extra $30/mo, and, there's the restocking fees, but, all in all, it's a very cheap hobby. Compared to golf, for example. (At least that's what I'm always telling my wife)

I share the same sentiment, I'm also a former s3 user and I gotta say Samsung still has a bad taste on my mouth. If EVER I'm getting back to Samsung I won't touch any Exynos version of it. Nexus 5 all the way! But if you want Samsung, get the Note 3 Snapdragon 800.

These seem like the three hottest phones right now, and i know i throw this up in the S4 forum so i am sure to get a bit biased replies, i am curious about comparing all 3.
To me it seems like the One has better sound quality and screen, the S4 supposedly has a bit better speeds (and probably best development) and the OGP has biggest screen size.
I don't love the interface design on the One, specifically no menu button or ability to see recently used apps, could be a deal breaker on it's own. The LG phone is an interesting one...seems like a nicely designed phone, and if you don't really have a need for most of Samsung's zany apps and stuff, it might be a great phone. Biggest problem i am worried about is - lack of development. I got burned on an OG Note when the Note 2 arrived and Samsung basically moved on, never to release an official JB version. I would hate to buy into another great phone only to get burned by lack of a following or something.
I'm sure anyone would be happy as a clam with any of these three bad boys, but anyone have an opinion when comparing them first hand?

I owned the One for a week and switched it for GS4. The Audio on the One sounds better(double front facing stereo speakers > single backfacing speaker) although the volume is about the same, and the screen is brighter, However the 4MP camera couldn't get enough detail for me and the photos looks really fuzzy on my 1440p screen. The AMOLED screen on the GS4 is beautiful and not too bad in sunlight either(One'LCD is better under the sun, but not much better).
Another benefit of GS4 is that the battery life is significantly better than the One, even when I run the GS4 at max brightness(Dynamic Mode) at all times,
Haven't used an Optimus G Pro, but I have both the One and S4. You're right about the button placement on the HTC, it's infuriating. There are custom kernels that allow you to sweep the capacitive buttons or hold the HTC logo to wake and sleep the phone, but they don't work as reliably as I'd like. The S4 is much better in that sense, in my opinion anyways. I prefer the screen on the HTC. I do a lot of Web browsing and I find it's much easier on the eyes. I've done a factory reset, turned off animations, and disabled S-Voice, but my S4 is noticeably more laggy than the HTC. It's actually shockingly laggy given the hardware. I don't take a ton of pictures, but when I do it's almost always in good lightning conditions, so for me the S4 camera trounces the camera on the HTC.
At this point you honestly can't really go wrong. Battery life is similar for my usage, maybe marginally better on the S4. If you can live with 32gb of storage (realistically about 26gb) I'd go for the HTC.

I used the Optimus G Pro (OGP) for 2 days before exchanging for a GS4. I exchanged because the battery life on the Optimus G pro was horrible. I had a NOTE II before and that battery would go all day & some. The screen did get a little brighter than the Galaxy S4, but that was the only benefit for me. I changed because of the battery drain, the lack of assessories, and the predicted lack of development. Both have locked bootloaders, but I figured I would get that unlocked sooner on the GS4 and have more ROMS available to me. I did like the customizable options included with the OGP, but I would choose the GS4 over it again if I had a chance.
I have all 3 phones. I use the LG Optimus G Pro as a daily driver at this point as my sgs4 lags big time and battery life sucks. My batter life on LG Optimus G Pro is very good and I have a note 2. I can go two days with heavy usage no issues. The screen is the best on LG Optimus G Pro compared to HTC one and sgs4.
HTC one build, look and feel is the best it is the iPhone of the android world. However I had the capacitive buttons they suck. The sound is better then any phone out there and I think screen looks good but battery life sucks. Will have decent dev support and comes in 64 or 32gb. No removable battery or sd card.
Sgs4 has nice big screen, 16gb storage total crap as 9gb is only use bale, you can get 32gb now. Cheap plastic build feels worst from all 3 phones. The phone is not as smooth as HTC one or LG Optimus G Pro unless you use a custom rom like CM. The size and screen is perfect if you want a bigger screen but not a big phone. Will have decent dev support. Removable battery and sd card slot.
Lg Optimus G Pro comes in 32gb with micro sd and Removable battery. Has best screen from all phones I have. It is super fast and battery is great. Boot loader is locked with no info if it will ever be unlocked so development is none at this point. Screen is 5.5 and 1080p. I like note 2 so this is a direct replacement for it until note 3 comes out. The phone is actually lighter and not as wide as note 2 so easier to hold single handed.

Of you are looking for development then the answer is simple, GS4. Reason being is Google is releasing an S4 with stock Android and it is supported by Google, not Samsung. We should have the best of both worlds. Pretty easy decision if you ask me

Have all three, imo its S4, G Pro, One in that order. Ever since development took off for the S4 and the lag was removed, S4 hands down is the best phone on the market (again, imo)...Optimus G Pro was a huge surprise as its an EXCELLENT phone with a great screen and decent battery (nowhere near as good as Note 2, right on par with S4)...the only issues I have with G Pro is reversed capacitive buttons and the screen is impossible to see outdoors, which is when I simply grab my S4 and go...the One is a great phone, I just got too used to physical home button and multi-tasking (through multi-window or Q Slide), plus I really, REALLY don't care for Sense in any of its iterations...G Pro volume is low even with an aux cable in my car, but fine with Bluetooth, S4 is loud, and One is loud. Clearly One wins design, but if functionality is what you want, I'd go with S4 and G Pro every time.

HTC one is also releasing a Google edition this summer so choice is narrowed down again.

I was another one of those guys on the fence between these three phones. Ended up ruling out the LG for two reasons: I can't stand the gov't issue LG phones they gave us to use at work and I really don't think I can handle lugging around a phone with a 5.5" screen in my uniform all day.
So that put me between the One and S4. While the one is favored for its front-facing speakers and LCD3 screen, it features no removable storage or user-accessible parts. Have a failed battery? Too bad, need to replace your entire phone. Need more space? Too bad, you only get what's on it (even though 64GB isn't too shabby). So, yes, the One is basically the iPhone of the Android world that just so happens to already have a decent amount of development now, but what will it be like when HTC moves on to whatever new phone it chooses to support? Those of us who owned an Evo knows exactly what I'm talking about.
That being said, the consumer-level development on the One is impressive. They've managed to remove the menu bar for apps that aren't ICS-compliant (Viper will, for one) and allowed you to finally bring the clock speeds back up to be comparable to (if not better than...at your own risk) the S4.
I will personally stick with the S4. There's always a bigger push for development for Samsung's phones, they tend to have better resale potential, and I will actually benefit from a user-accessible battery and SD card storage. Since the S4's SD slot is SDXC-compatible, should they manage to find an ability to have a cards' size in excess of 64GB, you've got MONSTER potential for storage.
One more vote for the S4, and not one from a Samsung fanboy. I was reluctant to decide on it after my Epic 4G was an Epic FAIL, but I feel it's the superior phone for me.
I would opt for the Samsung Galaxy S4 just because there is more development in it other then the other two phones. Also IMO the phone is much easier to use and has a smaller learning curve then the HTC One. The lag on the S4 truly sucks but for some reason I feel the lag is going away with time or as apps update so maybe the problem is getting taken care of. I primary feel the lag when receiving text messages. I use the iPhone as my benchmark for software and smoothness and the Galaxy Note 2 was the closest android phone to iPhone in terms of stability lack of lag and reliability. I thought samsung was taking things in the right direction but I feel they took a step back with the S4. Hopefully they redeem themselves!
For me, it came down to how I was going to use the device. Rarely do I play games or watch movies/tv on my phone, so why would I need front facing speakers anyway? I have a bluetooth stereo speaker if I want to listed to music with friends (jawbone). The ability to replace the battery, sd-card, and the lack of a MENU button pushed me over the top for the ONE. With the LG, it ended up just plain being too large, I have enough tablets in my life. The S4 actually isn't that big, the screen is just bigger because there's a smaller bezel. That left me with one choice, the S4, as much as I hate the rounded corners and plastic feel, the first thing we all do is put a case on it anyway.

S4 is a piss poor release from Samsung. Let's all get our fanboy hats off for a minute. It will be a good phone do to custom roms and devs supporting like CM. People jumped all over apple for releasing iPhone 5 which was similar to iPhone 4s. Samsung copied and did same thing with s4 compared to s3. Note 2 was stable and lack free from day one I had it and used it every day from first day of release until sgs4 was released. I do have an sgs4 and samsung could have done much better.

I have all the newest phones but I also am unbiased and don't stick to one brand or phone and call it like it is. With time and with custom roms sgs4 will be good. It is not my daily driver until cm10.1 comes out for it.
It just blows my mind how Samsung got it so right with the Galaxy Note 2 and couldn't replicate it with the Galaxy s4. I would assume all they had to do was take a product or software that was one of their best and improve it but instead they made it worse. I am really hoping for an update to be released soon to fix many of the software glitches. I am also wondering if this is more of an American galaxy s4 problem that's the international version does not suffer from or A cross-platform problem. But other than the occasional lagginess the Galaxy s4 blows away the competition.

Same for me. I had the One IPhone 5 and the galaxy note 2 and this is my favorite by far. The lag isn't too bad at all especially with custom kernels and such. Why use cyanogenmod with this though?

To be honest my phone is really lagging I may have a bad unit to be honest I am hoping cm10 will fix this or some custom tw rom. But phone is perfect screen size and size for phone.

If the N5 doesn't live up to your expectations which phone would you prefer instead even if cost were not a factor?
Is there another carrier flagship phone that you are satisfied would be flexible enough for you to be able to do all of the following?
root, rom;
restore to stock rom if necessary;
return to store after restoring stock rom;
upgrade via carrier upgrade plan after restoring stock rom?
make a potential carrier warranty claim after restoring stock rom?
If the Nexus 5 doesn't list up to my expectations, I will go back to my Galaxy Nexus. It may not be the most state of the art device but with CM ROM's and faux123's kernels, I can't go wrong with it.

That's actually the phone I own also but I've got it pretty heavily loaded over the last 2 years. I really think I need at least another gig of ram to run well and a faster processor wouldn't hurt. The non-removable 2300 battery on the N5 is just a real disappointment. I've only owned nexus devices so far and I'm a bit concerned that a carrier flagship may not be flexible enough.

A non-removable battery might be a deal breaker for me. I like to be able to just swap batteries if needed. I sure hope it doesn't end up with a non-removable battery. I am not a fan of LG stuff in the first place and I avoided the Nexus 4 for various issues. With T-Mobile not announcing another Sidekick anytime soon, I need to upgrade. I don't like the physical home buttons on phones so that has kept me away from the S4 and other phones. My original Galaxy Nexus actually got damaged due to heavy rain I got caught in and I couldn't get another from my carrier. I ended up getting an S4 to trade my mother for her Galaxy Nexus.
To be honest, nothing beats the Nexus experience to me, and I can't even think of other choices with what I have experienced. When I think of a Nexus Phone I don't really give a huge deal for the hardware internals, because it's not really meant to be a show off with the latest hardware and the largest battery. Samsung soon will hit a 1000 cpu cores into their Exynos bully maybe, and yet their Touchwiz phone LAG and stutter. A properly minimally optimized OS over a good deal of hardware is what Google brings, not to forget the minimal design of the phone, and oh for a damn good price - I wouldn't ask for more.

I played with the LG G2 for over an hour, and decided it was too Samsung 'cheapie' plastic to suit me. The HTC One Max would be my next phone, despite an S600 chipset, based on durability and useability, and those speakers would come in quite handy at times.

If the Nexus is a no-go on Verizon I'll likely wait until the Moto Maker site goes live for VZW and at least get 32 gigs of internal storage. Feels really good in the hand and super smooth

+1 - love just been able to swap a fully charged battery. Extremely convenient... though from the leaks it looks very unlikely. Though I'm quite over my S4 atm and wanna try something different - the N5 looks like it could be a good choice.

That it does. That's why I have been looking forward to it. The camera sticking out a bit also bugs me about the phone also. These two things are bugging me very much. With the time I get out of my Galaxy Nuxus battery on normal use, it might be fine for me for normal daily use. If I need to go out of town though, camping, or some where I just can't get to a charger, I'll have to hold on to my Galaxy Nexus to make sure I've got something I can stretch out for a couple of days.
The wireless recharging for the Nexus 5 is something that really caught my attention as a good thing. Being able to just sit my phone down on my desk when I get in and have it charge is awesome! The screen also looks very nice for slightly under 5 inches. Hopefully the announcement and launch kicks off today.
Who buys carrier branded crap phones with their ugly logos ... Nothing can beat a Nexus in Android world.

yeah me too about the battery thing. I like to have a removable batt so I can buy an extra and swap it if my other one drains. But I think powerbanks are also helpful for non-removable batteries as well. #confusing hahaha
The Nexus has always been a developer only phone. But as it is for the camera that megapixels don't matter, so it is for the battery that the mAh won't matter. We have previously seen that the phones with an extra large capacity battery yet not perform as per the expectations. Atleast Google doesn't stuff their phones with bloatware like Samsung. A Nexus always comes with a minimal OS coupled with a balanced hardware at an unrivalled price. A non-removable battery & no expandable memory have always been the let downs, yet 32GB is enough for me for storage & a battery lasting just over a day is well enough for me. Nexus ftw !

I'm currently on an OG Note, recently bought a new battery and I have little problems with it. I'm mainly bored with it now and the USB port has some problems (€10 to fix). Minor issues and I'm sure I could use the phone for another year without ever really being bothered by it. I don't play games, so I don't really need all that raw power the new devices have. I have been looking for a new device for some time, just to have a new gadget and all.
I work for HTC indirectly so I have a One lying around here that I can use, but I can't root it so I have no use for it. I can't get used to the new Sense and their strange softkey layout (though that's more the fault of developers that don't keep to the design guidelines of Android, than it is HTC's).
I also had the S4, which I liked overall, but I found it too expensive, it had useless functions which I didn't want to pay for. Especially since you lose a lot of them when you put a stock rom on it. It has an AMOLED screen which, after two years of the Note, I'm not very happy about (uniform colours are a pain, and it degrades too fast). And it looks just like any other Samsung device (and I'm bored now). - I did get hooked on the infrared functionality though. I miss that every day.
Then the Z1 came along, looked refreshing and the waterproof stuff is a giant pro. Useless camera, but the rest was pretty good. Unfortunately the screen dissapoints.
So now I'm waiting for the Nexus 5. Absolutely no useless functions. Just a good and powerfull device that can last for another two years. No screwing around with roms and stuff and a good price.
If it dissapoints, I might go for an S4 as they're now in the pricerange of the Nexus 5 or I'll stick to the Note for another year, to see if something better comes up.
If not the Nexus 5, I'd go for the Oppo N1.
With out of the box CyanogenMod, IPS 5.9 inch display, and top-notch camera optics and dual user-controllable flash.
I have (had) the S4 and sold it today. I was extremely dissapointed with it in just about every way, and with the addition of Knox locked bootloaders being sneaked in by Samdung, that iced the "sell it now" cake for me.
I'm actually back to using the SIII in the meantime, and even with piss-poor driver support, it runs CM very well.
my choise is between Nexus 4 or Nexus 5

Actually, as far as the hardware goes, I am quite impressed with g2. That display seems so much larger than other phones of the same physical dimensions. Battery, processor, storage, etc. no limitations except no wireless charging. (except verizon version)
A play edition would be very tempting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem likely with the N5 being a somewhat close cousin. If the N5 had the exact same g2 hardware it would be a no-brainer for me even at a much higher cost.
I wanted to know if anyone regrets his/her decision to get a Nexus 5 since im kinda stuck. My S4 is fine but i saw 2friends getting this weird break in the screen, where the gorilla glass is all fine, but the amoled behind it is broken. So I'm really scared that, that will happen to me.
I was wondering if its worth to upgrade? what do you think?

I don't someone else can answer this for you. It's really all about personal preference, necessity, financial feasibility, etc.
Are you happy with your S4? Does it suit your purposes or not? Do you just want to have the latest/greatest? Are there features of your S4 that you may not be able to live without by switching to a pure Google device?
As for the break in the screen, that doesn't happen on its own. It would require pressure to break. So long as you treat your device right I wouldn't worry about it.

The S4 has far better speakers (soundquality and volume level), better camera, higher storage capacity, and some usefull TW features as well (apart from the bloatware). So i wouldn`t change personaly. The 4.4 stock UI looks awfull imo if you don`t slap a custom launcher and icons on it.

I've had the S4, HTC One, Moto X and now the Nexus 5 in the past 4-5 months. I personally didn't like having a physical home button or the back button setup on the GS4 and I couldn't stand TouchWiz. I honestly wish there was a high end Moto X. I would buy that in heartbeat.
Just like Tony said, it's all based on personal preference.
I have just received my Nexus 5 as a replacement for the S4 (international) that I have had for the past nine months.
The S4 has had CM10 for as long as I have been able to, and so I can't comment on Touchwiz, which I thought was a design abomination.
The drivers for change were:
Cheap exterior on S4
Annoying placement of butttons
Poor battery/network issues due to the proprietary bits hacked into CM
Camera issues for the same reason
Slow uptake on new ROMs due to there being 72 different versions of the phone (no OmniROM for example)
Wanting the Google experience unadulterated
Samsung's stance on custom ROMs (Knox implementation and so on)
I will report back in a few days but first impressions of the Nexus are that it feels like a much higher quality device.

I am actually liking the 4.4 look and the white status bar. I was never a fan of the blue.
As far as changing, if you like your S4 keep it. If you dont then try the N5. You have to weigh what is important to you.

The N5 speaker is fine for me as is the camera; I never even came close to utilizing the storage capacity on my S4 and I absolutely despise TouchWiz. I think that stock 4.4 looks absolutely fantastic and wouldn't change a thing about it as of yet.
So you see how personal preference really drives a decision like this. If you like the Google Experience and aren't keen on the crap customizations that other OEMs put on their devices, I really think that the N5 is a fantastic option and am really loving mine so far.
I own the GE S4 and did purchased the N5. The GE S4 does have ridiculous battery life and also swappable battery and a SD card. I only reason why I went back to the nexus line up is the nexus forum. I am praying the N5 does have better bettery life then the N4(one of reason why I sold it)

In terms of usability I think that the S4 is just as good as the Nexus 5, no real point in spending money on something you don't *really* need.
Then again, if you can sell your S4 for about the same price it would cost you to get a Nexus 5, and you really dig the Nexus 5, then why the heck not?

my few cents, i've got my N5 today and I am really torn between it and my old SGS3 with 1 GB ram (the crappy version)!
Design and Build quality:
My first impression was that this is the coolest and sexiest mobile phone i ever held in my hands. Feels awesome and looks awesome, much better than you would imagine seeing the pics online.
Display:
N5 display is certainly sharper, but also a bit washed and kinda unimpressive compared to IP5 or HTC one. What surprised me is that the SGS3 amoled produces whiter whites unless i really crank up the brightness on N5, which makes it really annoyingly bright and hard to look at. Viewing angles are much better on amoled of course. N5 Soft keys take too much screen estate imho, but that can be fixed.
UI:
N5 is extremely responsive and fast. Feels very good. No Lag at all, but tbh the difference to TW is not that bad as 4.2.2 and some modded kernels and frameworks make TW smooth and acceptably lagfree.
Camera:
Big advantage for the SGS 3 and probably much more for the S4. Unbelievably ****ty and laggy camera app on the N5, picture quality is disappointing, much worse than S3. Video is unbearable, permanent refocusing and overreaction on bright/dark areas, massive overexposure. I really hope google fixes the software.
Speaker:
Ok, no difference for me.
Battery Life:
My crappy S3 survives more screen-on time while browsing with wifi, kinda unimpressive tbh for a new generation device. Maybe 4 hours of screenon time for N5, 4.5 to 5 on S3. Let's see what tweaking can or cannot do.
Big Letdown: Chrome. This crap browser is notably slower than the samsung browser, probably a lot slower than s4 browser. Chrome on the N5 loads faster but it is lagging and just a huge disappointment, really bad experience.
I will think about it for a few days, currently I tend to returning the N5.

Knox was the last straw so selling my s4 before the 4.3 TouchWiz releases in Canada. I don't like a device that if I root + custom recovery, I can not return to default state. No more Samsung for me.

Can anyone recommend a browser similar to the AOSP/Touchwiz one? It's the only thing I miss on my N5 after switching from a Note II. Boat browser crashes, flash doesn't work in firefox...
Looking to get a Nexus 5, If I sell my s4 I can ultimately gain an extra $40 from it as well. I was using a N4 prior to my s4, only thing I hated on the N4 was the washed out display and weak camera. My reason to switch again is Stock Android which I do miss with fast updates and great community for rom development, and also if the camera is great for decent shots (indoor, outdoor) I've read reviews but there all mixed. Please share some experience if you have any
If you search you will find what you are looking for. Also the s4 sells for $300, I don't know how you will gain an extra $40

My experience with the nexus 5 has been brilliant so far, of course the are some drawbacks because of the price such as the camera but unless you are demanding a good camera its fine. Performance has been excellent and the only time the phone got unbearably hot was when I was backing up the phone on twrp.
Nexus 5, CM11, Franco kernel and Xposed framework
i sold my s4 with spigen tempered glass which was perfect condition for $405. I made a good choice moving to N5. only thing that I miss is the all the gimmicks that I rarely used. (wave to answer calls and such)
this is my opinion comparing the two.
N5 screen seems washed out when brightness is on max since LCD back light bleeds through. 60 - 80% brightness can cover that and get you a good contrast ratio (to my eyes) yet still brighter than S4 display. I do miss that true black color but I prefer whiter whites than blacker blacks.
Removable battery is a nice option but frankly, I've never taken apart to swap batteries. I'd rather grab battery case to extend my current juice than swapping it out. Even with smaller N5 battery, i can go all day. I'm a heavy email user and make nearly 0 calls. so N5 battery is no problem for me.
Samsung's Android update is pretty unpredictable. you'll never know when they'll push updates and not all regions get the same update. your region might even skip that update. Carriers blame samsung and samsung blames carriers for update screw ups. you are just stuck in the middle hoping to get some sort of update.
N5 has nearly 0 function if you move from Samsung. IR controls, surround group musics, touchless motion gestures aren't avail to N5. but N5 has one thing that I use the most - NFC, which is nice so I got that going.
I could keep going with pros and cons, but when it comes to pros, N5 has more advantages in my honest opinion. we can't really make decision for you, we can only provide our thoughts. I hope you choose whats right for you instead of choosing something just because that's what everyone gets. just do what I just did, make pros and cons see which weighs more.
Coming from a S3 : the nexus camera is impressive with HDR+ enabled and also in low light conditions. I expected weak battery but it is good enough and very very low power use with the standby mode (if you keep location reporting off)

I came from a Samung Galaxy SIII. I notice a huge and I mean huge difference in performance all around including camera. The only thing I miss is the instant shutter on the camera on the S3. Camera quality is great in my opinion. I am on ATT with my nexus 5 and love the network speed. The screen is better in m opinion to and easier to see in direct sunlight. From my short experience with a nexus phone. I will never go back to a non nexus phone ever again

I went from a Galaxy Nexus, and then to a temporary Nokia Lumia 521 for a month or so until grabbed this Nexus 5.
My girlfriend has a Note 3 and I used that thing extensively, and I find my Nexus 5 to be so much better.
It feels better, looks better, and is small enough to be large but still usable with one hand (with some shimmying).
Highly suggested that you get a Nexus 5.

My wife has a s4, and I would say it's about the same as my nexus 5 if not a little better due to the bigger size.

My battery life with the N5 has been at least as good or better than the S4. I liked my S4, but the N5 is a superior phone in almost every way and I don't for a second regret making the switch.

I understand the Oneplus 3 is better value for money but which is the best phone overall? I am leaning towards Samsung as I have always used a Samsung but only worry is whether the performance drops after a few months? The 6GB ram on the Oneplus is pretty tempting but again not sure if with time the performance will be affected.

I think either device would be a great upgrade as both companies have done a great job as far as refining their flagship device and so you'll be getting a top phone either way. I have previously had a Galaxy S4 which I really liked and also a Oneplus which I also really liked, both for different reasons. Its going to come down to what needs/preferences you have or want to have in a new device such as camera, sound, build, software, etc.
I found my Oneplus One was great for ROMs,mods and tweaks, there was endless things you could tinker with if you wanted to (you didnt have to). With the S7, it will depend on whether you will be using the Snapdragon or Exynos version, as the bootloader is locked down on the Snapdragon version and so there wont be any aosp ROMs until someone (ever?) finds a way around that. The bonus of the Oneplus one was that it shipped with Cyanogen OS and there were so many (there still are) other ROMs you could try and choose from. Im not sure how this will compare on the OP3, but then again it might not be a big concern to you.
I have the Exynos version S7 myself and havent bothered with rooting or any roms yet as it runs so well out of the box, but its nice to know the option is there if I ever feel like it. I think the upgrade from S5->S7 is a good one for you, as you dont lose features such as the micro sd card and water/dust resistance, which you would have with the S6. The one thing that you would lose would be the ability to use a second battery as its obviously non-removable with the S7, but then again there are tons of good portable batteries these days which can cover that situation.
The OP3 definitely seems like a solid device in terms of actual physical build and specs, it would also be a nice change from Samsung/Touchwiz if you wanted a slightly different OS experience. I dont think the 6GB is something you will appreciate day to day or feel the benefit of right away, as Oneplus themselves hadnt really even optimised for 6GB of ram when they released the device and are currently working on an OTA to address this. But its definitely going to future proof the device for while and provide solid multitasking abilities, although the 4GB on the S7 does a great job of this as well.
I would read through the S7 and OP3 forums on XDA to get a feel of user's opinions and any pros and cons. Sometimes things (good or bad) only come to light a while after the devices have been in the hands of owners who are using them day in day out and putting them through their paces. I would happily recommend the S7 for lovely build quality, superb display, top camera, good battery and all the other features that are actually useful (water resistance, sd card slot). If I didnt have my S7 (it was a contract upgrade) I would seriously consider the OP3, especially as you can just order it without an invite this time, it seems to be very good value for money.
@gsmyth pretty much said it all. Give us an idea of how you use your Galaxy S5. Have you rooted, custom recovery, ROM's etc... Are you a multitasker, heavy browser or social media addict?

Perhaps you're interested in my initial comparison between the two over on the OnePlus forum (What device did you ditch for one plus3? - Post 284).
With the S7(E) you are paying (considerably extra) for Screen and Camera Quality, Weatherproofing and design.
If these are not so important you can save money with the Op3. It is a good phone.

I had a S3 before that I rooted and was using Cynagoen Mod for a while but that phone became extremely unstable and just became a brick by the end of it so I decided not to root or install custom ROM on my S5 thinking it would perform better over the long term. However after a year or so the performance dropped a lot and the past 6 months it's been terrible. It
I am more of a multi tasker and do use couple of different social media platforms but not too addicted by any means.

I found my Oneplus One was great for ROMs,mods and tweaks, there was endless things you could tinker with if you wanted to (you didnt have to). With the S7, it will depend on whether you will be using the Snapdragon or Exynos version, as the bootloader is locked down on the Snapdragon version and so there wont be any aosp ROMs until someone (ever?) finds a way around that. The bonus of the Oneplus one was that it shipped with Cyanogen OS and there were so many (there still are) other ROMs you could try and choose from. Im not sure how this will compare on the OP3, but then again it might not be a big concern to you.
I have the Exynos version S7 myself and havent bothered with rooting or any roms yet as it runs so well out of the box, but its nice to know the option is there if I ever feel like it. I think the upgrade from S5->S7 is a good one for you, as you dont lose features such as the micro sd card and water/dust resistance, which you would have with the S6. The one thing that you would lose would be the ability to use a second battery as its obviously non-removable with the S7, but then again there are tons of good portable batteries these days which can cover that situation.
The OP3 definitely seems like a solid device in terms of actual physical build and specs, it would also be a nice change from Samsung/Touchwiz if you wanted a slightly different OS experience. I dont think the 6GB is something you will appreciate day to day or feel the benefit of right away, as Oneplus themselves hadnt really even optimised for 6GB of ram when they released the device and are currently working on an OTA to address this. But its definitely going to future proof the device for while and provide solid multitasking abilities, although the 4GB on the S7 does a great job of this as well.
I would read through the S7 and OP3 forums on XDA to get a feel of user's opinions and any pros and cons. Sometimes things (good or bad) only come to light a while after the devices have been in the hands of owners who are using them day in day out and putting them through their paces. I would happily recommend the S7 for lovely build quality, superb display, top camera, good battery and all the other features that are actually useful (water resistance, sd card slot). If I didnt have my S7 (it was a contract upgrade) I would seriously consider the OP3, especially as you can just order it without an invite this time, it seems to be very good value for money.

Got the S7 in silver! Going to switch today! Whats the best way to transfer all my data/apps to my new phone?
Also, does using Nova Launcher and Swift Keyboard affect the phones performance? I have used these two apps from day one so was wondering if its better to use the stock options for improved performance!

Great. You'll be happy with the S7E especially now that root is available. The root game all happened in the last few days and there are several threads dedicated to rooting your device. I surely don't think using Nova with SwiftKey will affect performance in any way. Give it a shot and report back so other users will know. Good luck with your new S7E.

Nice one!
There is the Samsung switch app which should get most of your data over from your old device. You also get a USB OTG type adapter to hook up for transferring data.
I also use Nova launcher on devices as it's so customisable and also to get that stock look, but haven't installed it on my S7 as I haven't felt the need. Previously touchwiz was pretty laggy and boring looking but I think Samsung have actually improved it quite well. I do miss not having the hide apps feature and having to re-sort the app drawer after installing an app is pretty annoying,but not a deal breaker for me. I have also installed a material theme which changes the icon theme as well ( plus it themes the pull down drawer and settings menu.
I also just use the Samsung keyboard as it's working OK for me, again I have used the Google one on other devices but haven't felt the need to install another one. You can always give both apps a try and see what you prefer on your S7, it really depends on what you find better/nicer/easier.
