[Q] modifying hosts on kitkat - adaway etc - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone got adaway or equivalent working under KitKat? Had a bootloop when I tried

Adaway 2.8 working here on 4.4.2. In Root Browser, change the permissions on /system/etc/hosts to 'rw-rw-rw-' - this needs to be done everytime before you update hosts in Adaway. There is no permanent fix yet, that I am aware of.

[Q] Blocking ADs on Kitkat

I am on Speedmod ROM 4.4.2 by Giugiu. I have tried many AD blocking apps like Adaway, Adfree, Adblock etc and even this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098
but none of them seem to work. The hosts file in /system/etc gets modified all right, but ADs still appear in most of the apps. Could anyone help me out here?
I had no problems when on GB or JB, its only on KK that I get this issue.
Try this

Using any root file explorer navigate to system/etc/host file and set the permissions as readable and writable.
Then try again using any of the ad blocker.
Hope this helps you..
Good luck

Thanks! But what's strange here is I'm perfectly able to replace the hosts file. It's a whopping 13 MB in size and has the list of all the ad sources to be blocked. Funnily enough none of the ads get blocked.

[Q] BusyBox, AdAway and NTP Server lost after restart of device

First of all I am not able to change ntp server. I am using Faster Fix app for that. But after rebooting my device the settings are gone. Same for AdAway. After downloading and updateing hosts file all seems to work until reboot, than AdAway is disabled an ads are shown. Third app with problems is TWRP Manager. It sasy I have to install BusyBox in bewest version. After doing so it works, but after restart BusyBox is again an older version.
My device is HTC One, my custom rom is Android Revolution HD 71.0.

Use AdAway on rooted P8max? Hosts file can't be overwritten, any workarounds?

Hi,
I just rooted my P8max. Now I installed AdAway to block ads, but it seems like the hosts file cannot be overwritten. Are there any workaround for that to make the AdAway work?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I rerooted and it works now.

Adaway (June)

Hello,
I'm running the latest June (N build) stock and rooted with EX Kernel, downloaded and installed the latest version of Adaway and then downloaded and applied files for adblocking, then rebooted. However, it doesn't seem to be blocking any ads in Google Chrome. Not sure what the issue is, as it's worked on PureNexus ROM for me before and says it's blocking ads. Anyone else experiencing something similar? I don't have systemless root checked off in settings but that's because I'm using SuperSU and not Magisk.
SuperSU tends to install as systemless and you can check it in the settings. If some of the options are grayed out due to saying something like "Not available in systemless mode" then you are on a systemless root so you will have to enable the Systemless Hosts in AdAway.
It's not the rom, Supersu, or Adaway. The hosts file that is being downloaded by default is offline. If you check the Adaway forum you'll see the fix (basically unchecking the hosts file and adding a new one).

Can't manage to block ads on rooted device

Hello,
I first rooted a few months back, on nougat. Installed AdAway and it blocked every ad without trouble. But since I flashed the CRAP build for Oreo, I can't seem to block any ads anymore. I tried both AdAway and Adfree without luck. Both don't block any ads at all.
Could someone help me figure out what it is that im doing wrong?
i had the same problem, i use magisk did you made sure the systemless hosts is turned on in magisk if you use it
Try using tha app Blokada . It works on most ads.
