I am on Speedmod ROM 4.4.2 by Giugiu. I have tried many AD blocking apps like Adaway, Adfree, Adblock etc and even this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098
but none of them seem to work. The hosts file in /system/etc gets modified all right, but ADs still appear in most of the apps. Could anyone help me out here?
I had no problems when on GB or JB, its only on KK that I get this issue.
Try this

Using any root file explorer navigate to system/etc/host file and set the permissions as readable and writable.
Then try again using any of the ad blocker.
Hope this helps you..
Good luck

Thanks! But what's strange here is I'm perfectly able to replace the hosts file. It's a whopping 13 MB in size and has the list of all the ad sources to be blocked. Funnily enough none of the ads get blocked.

Anyone having problems with the official Hulu app force closing? I'm Running das BAMF Sense 3.0 RC4, and i can browse within the app just fine, but when a video begins to load, it force closes on me.
I was having that problem on 3g, working fine on wifi though.
I'm having there same problem, running bamf 3.0rc5 on 4g
glad i'm not the only one. Now that the app's out, hopefully the devs can tweak it to work on rooted ROMs
I read that HULU+ actually detects rooted devices and refuses to run on them. The crashes are on purpose.
Well that sucks. Looks like I have to cancel my hulu plus sub now
I've been able to watch the free files fine with np. I'm stock rooted on mr2.

no go for me, FC too. I think it has to do with ROMs more so than being rooted. CM7 and BAMF have issues but rooted stock ROMS do ok.
Also the alterations that we had to do to get netflix to work might be causing issues too
This needs to be illegal to check for customizations like rooting. None of their phucking business. Kuntz.

Its because we are blocking ad and modifying the hosts file.
you need to have adfree installed and hit revert to repair the hosts file.

Yeah, it will do that on normal hulu as well if you block ads.

Install Adaway from the Market, works fine here
You need Busybox too, if you dont have it yet, its also on the Market.

That's the best solution!
Neither work for me. I am S-OFF and perm rooted.
Matt
S-Off, Perm Root, SuperUser updated, BusyBox latest version.
AdFree still doesn't work for me, Angry Birds and other apps still show admob ads.
Check out the recent reviews for Adfree..they did something really shady to the app by switching to a yet-unusable payware model, but in the interim, the app forces you to update to a new version, which basically leaves your hosts file untouched.
I've attached an adfree hosts file from another rom, that I've using successfully on my N1, a MT4G, and on a Sensation.
To use it:
Download the attached hosts.zip
Open Root Explorer
Extract the hosts.zip file
Copy the extracted hosts file
Navigate to \system\etc
Mount the folder as R/W
Delete the existing hosts file
Paste the copied hosts file into the etc directory
Mount the folder back as R/O
After a restart, you should be in good shape!

Adaway worked for me, but in the Android Market version of regular Angry Birds, ads still show up. Maybe Roxio is just smarter and doing something else for ads.

Hmm thats the only Version of Angry Birds i dont have, cause the rights of this App is a brashness. There are no Ads in AB Seasons and Rio and also in other Apps like Astro or Grindr.
Tf101 (revolver-ics4)...hulu+ ,unable to see ads....it seems i have some type of adblocker and want to either learn how to skip ads or remove the ad block
If I remember correct, revolver has an adblock (even the ics revolver version). Normal in Revolver you can use revolverparts to remove the adblocker, but revolverparts is not yet available for revolver 4.0.0 rc1
maybe this thread can help you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741435
It is for custom roms like revolver. read 1st before flashing.
hope this helps.
edit:download not working. Maybe you can do something with the hosts file........
I've attached an empty hosts file. Unzip it 1st. Then use any file explorer which has root access and replace your current hosts file in system/etc.
Success...Thanks partner, finally i can sleep now, this was driving me nuts
Is there any alternative to ad block plus for device not rooted ( lollipop)?
Questions belong in Q&A.
Adblockers modify the hosts file or use iptables to redirect ad URLs to localhost, which requires root access. I don't know of any that don't.
Tks
Adblock plus don't modify any host file , but apply a filter in port 2020 with a proxy on localhost.
On kitkat work fine , on lollipop don't work.
Think she is confused with adaway which does create a host file. All you can do uprooted is use the app you are to warn you of ads so you can take apps out. I use adaway but I buy apps when there is a paid version. If I'm not willing to pay I take it out. If they give me no choice but to have ads I block them.

I meant that I didn't know of any that don't require root access other than the mentioned.
I have a G930F and installed TWRP + rooted with no issues. I can run rooted apps off of it as well like Titanium, Greenify, CF.Lumen, etc...
Although when I try the Root Explorer in ES File Manager, it keeps on telling me "Sorry test failed. This feature cannot run on your device". It doesn't look like it's even asking for root permissions. I tried different combinations of installing/uninstalling/rebooting and they don't seem to help. Any thoughts on what to do next?
Or if this is unfixable, any suggestions on what other file manager to use? Features I'm looking for include:
- Standard search/sort/filter/copy/cut/paste/delete
- Root Explorer
- FTP/SFTP support
- Configurable shortcuts/favorites
Thanks

I'd suggest solid explorer, very similar to es explorer but none of the app scanning and permissions crap that's recently been introduced in es.
Or just thinking out loud, would it be possible to add it to SuperSU's list without it requesting for access?

I used to have an HTC M7 with the ARHD rom, and the rom came with it by default so I got used to it. I have to admit that there are some things I wish it would do that it doesn't. But I would say about 90% of what I need is available there.
But since I am starting fresh with a new phone, I'm open to suggestions if you have another root file explorer in mind. Pretty much the only thing outside of the standard functions that I need is sftp support, so I can copy/paste files to/from my mac.

Amaze or Solid Explorer is good. ES used to be good but it turned the way of Cheetah Mobile apps and started adding useless **** to their app.

lol yeah all of those sd card analysis and home page and stuff that I don't even use. I tried Solid Explorer, that thing looks nice. no extra fluff and just has what I'm looking for for a file manager
Do you guys know of any other file managers that allows for editing the DateModified? I know Total Commander has one, but I'm not digging their interface.
