Can't manage to block ads on rooted device - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hello,
I first rooted a few months back, on nougat. Installed AdAway and it blocked every ad without trouble. But since I flashed the CRAP build for Oreo, I can't seem to block any ads anymore. I tried both AdAway and Adfree without luck. Both don't block any ads at all.
Could someone help me figure out what it is that im doing wrong?

i had the same problem, i use magisk did you made sure the systemless hosts is turned on in magisk if you use it

Try using tha app Blokada . It works on most ads.

Use AdAway on rooted P8max? Hosts file can't be overwritten, any workarounds?

Hi,
I just rooted my P8max. Now I installed AdAway to block ads, but it seems like the hosts file cannot be overwritten. Are there any workaround for that to make the AdAway work?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I rerooted and it works now.

Ad blocking

For the life of me I cannot block ads. I've tried adaway magisk modules and manually editing the hosts file. Only way Ive been able to do it is via VPN but I don't want to go that route.
It did work. Then I reset my phone and it now no longer works.
Any ideas?

I'm using this version with no issues whatsoever. Not sure why it says that it was installed via the Google play Store...lol

Temporary root to install adaway appnin oneplus 7

I want to install adaway(pornaway) app in my oneplus 7 as I want to completely block all porn website in my phone. But by using twrp and magisk installer and than uninstall both of them to unroot my phone is a long procedure. Is there any easier way to do this?
You can purchase AdGuard, no rooting required Been using it for years without the hassle of rooting process.
Blokada is another good alternative to block ads without root, and it's free.

Downgrade rooted device from Android 11 to Android 10 without data loss

I upgraded to Android 11 (Oct 2020 stable) a couple of days ago. I have never been more disappointed in an Android release. My phone freezes constantly and the only way out is a hard reboot. Sometimes it takes 5-6 reboots before the phone behaves normally. There are lots of threads on Google forums where people are facing the same issue on different pixel models, so it looks like an issue with the OS and not the phone. I would like to go back to Android 10 and preferably save my data. I have a rooted phone. Can I follow the same steps that I performed to upgrade - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYib1WNr2I8?? Thanks!

No, downgrading requires a wipe (factory image with -w intact).

I am assuming you are rooted? Are you using systemless hosts module and Adaway? That causes what you are describing...there is a bug in one of them.
Uninstall Adaway and the Systemless Hosts module if so.

Yes, I'm using Adaway and Systemless Hosts module. Cool, I'll delete it. Any other way to run adblock currently?
Thanks a ton, btw! This really helps!
Edit: I uninstalled Adaway. But I'm running the canary version of Magisk and when I go to settings, there's no option to delete Systemless Hosts module. There is a button "Systemless Hosts" and when I click on it, it says 'Added systemless module for adblock apps'. How do I delete it?

One way to delete it would be to create a file called remove in the systemless host directory in /data/adb/modules/, and reboot. I don't have that module, so I don't know what the directory name is.
An alternative to AdBlock is Settings, Network & Internet, Private DNS. Set Private DNS provider hostname to dns.adguard.com.

Hosts do nothing

Recently and updated my phone from like 10.3.0 to 11.1.1.1, and since hosts stoped working. I am using Adaway, and host mode dont doing anything, i have tons of ads, but dns mode work fine. Systemless host is enabled in magisk (23). Any help/sugestions?
