Note 3 why the sudden price drop? - Galaxy Note 3 General

Note 3 launched in September at around £600, I bought mine last week brand new for £429 sim free from Scan only 3 months after launch, it seems a couple of places are selling the Note 3 for under £500 aswell, why has the price suddenly dropped so much?.
I had a iPhone 5S 32GB prior to the Note 3, as i wanted to give iOS a try, after being with Android for years, but my love affair with Apple didn't last long and it was sold & only loosing £50 when i sold it, which paid for both the Note 3 & a Moto G 8GB.
With the price dropping like it is, it doesn't bode well for resale value next year, as I'm one of those that like to sell my handset to paid towards the next latest & greatest, which will either be the S5 or Note 4, probs more likely the Note 4 now.

Samsung phones always drop in price very quickly. .. especially compared to iPhone.

Because all lose it's price.. cars.. pc.. all.. the time of life of a phone is 1 year.. over that it won't be produced, and price goes to 1/2 of the initial..
Iphone is the ONLY ONE "CHEAP" PRODUCT witch doesen't decrease it's value.. why? Because people are stupid and pays an higher price only to have a phone..

When i traded in my S2 for a S3 resale value on the S2 was still very good at the time, if i had sold it i would have gotten more.
It seems since the S3 resale value on all Galaxy phones have really taken an hit, those with a S4 that plan on selling next year for the S5 will probably get next to nothing for it being only a 16GB device.

The actual reason might not be so much the specific model, but instead the sheer volume of those devices - Samsung made at least twice more S3 devices (most of those sold very early) than S2 (which still saw a lot of later models for other markets, but those were already re-positioned clearly below the original top-level price).

€470 in Germany,
€687 in Netherlands
And people wonder why I don't buy my hardware here?
Anyway, prices always drop rather quickly on nearly all devices after a few months. Apple being the exception because they know they can ask 100% even after two years and their customers are stupid enough to pay it. They pay it for a 'new' device, too. Even if it's identical to the last 3.

Probably because of knox.
Lest you forget, ppl buy samdung's fone so they can install custom rom to utilise their great hardware.
with knox, tripping it will void warranty(and resale value) and stock TW is full of bloatware lagging the phone like a snail.
samdung's note3 with knox and no way of removing it,is akin to apple telling u how to hold ur phone for a better reception.
very soon, they are going to lose more customers thanks to knox.

Knox has nothing to do with it, 99% of people that buy Samsung smartphones don't care if it has Knox or not most probably don't even know what it does or even know it there.
You could trip the Knox 0x1, and still sell it on as normal, as most buyers won't even notice it as they don't go customizing or use it's security features.

It won't drop anymore now until the Note 4 and even after it's release for a little.
Samsung phones always come very expensive, reduce to a lower price (but still expensive) after a few months and stay there until they are discontinued.

I bought mine for 500eu new in Belgium.

In Singapore.
It was £475.00 back in September.
It is now selling at £412.00. Since November.
I guess that the market is now flooded with millions of Note 3, thus the price dropped.
It is good for the consumers. So, I don't care a **** because I bought a phone to use it and not to worry about its resale value in the future.

Fun and sad fact is I can never sell my phones, I feel bad and just put them on my desk to be remembered

Hey! Also bought mine from Scan UK via their eBay store (by the way, never buy from SimplyElectronics, don't be tempted by the cheap prices).
Been using it and can see myself using this device for at least a year and a half. I tend to swith to new one every year. Upgrading from a Nexus 4.
Now regarding the price drop, several factors to take into consideration:
* This is Samsung. They can afford to drop the price, and still grab marketshare and get a profit.
* The holiday season!
* Knox
I'm very happy with the phone. It's the best long lasting device I've had since the Nokia days of Symbian, and boy does USB3 charge this baby fast!

After i bought it they dropped the price to £424 for a few days on ebay, on their own site they are selling it for £453 last time i checked, I went to pick mine up rather than have it delivered as I'm only 20 mins drive away from place.
As for Simply Electronics I'm surprised this company still allowed to trade as a UK base company, because they pretend they based in the UK, when really they based in Hong Kong, and all there stuff you order and eventually get weeks after if you get it at all that is are grey imports, plus because they based in Hong Kong you will have no protection under the UK Sale Of Goods Act if something goes wrong & you try to get it sorted under warranty then forget it, but yet thousand of people each year are duped into the low prices & Trading Standards don't seem to do anything about them.

Are smartphones going down in price faster now?

Are smart phones going down in price faster than they did a couple of years ago?
I can buy a samsung s2 for $540 on amazon.com when it's on sale. The s2 is not even a year old, if I'm not mistaken.
I'm pretty sure when the HTC HD2 was released, it took alot longer to go down in price.
And some people are saying they bought the samsung galaxy note for $700 - 760, even before it was officially released.
So following this trend, can we expect to have top of the line quality smartphones for $300 or less within 5 years?
They go down faster in price now because they are releasing more faster.

In a few years, I can see $300 models being more than enough for most people. They will still sell top of the line models for $700-800, but fewer people will buy them.

The S2 is actually *months* old and you can find it at about 410€ on many sites. Anyway, i really don't uderstand why people complain about this: it's a phone, not a share, the least it costs the better. Does it make sense that the totally outdated iPhone4 still costs 700€? How is that good for you unless you wanna sell it? If you want bleeding edge technology then you have to live with the fact that your toy will have its price dropped soon, regardless what you paid for it. Imho phones are meant to be used, and not to be sold, so i'm really happy about what's going on on the android platform. As a power user i care about my SPECS not being reasonably up to date, the price doesn't really matter to me anyway. To make it clearer: i don't upgrade my GPU every time a new one comes out just for the sake of being up to date, i do that when my rig can't stand the current games or a particular game i wanna play anymore, and when i do i'm happy if i can find one at a lower price.

Totally agree. Anyway you should consider that a trend is a trend. No matter what. Stupid people will pay a lot of €uros just to get themselves realized and soccially accepted. Silly ones.
But its not nice for the people which bought the phones early... and sometimes even are early adopters or better beta testers...

That's the point: complaining makes no sense at all...once you understand that androids aren't the kind of phones (especially Samsung ones) to buy on the day they are released you're just fine. I waited a few months before getting my GS2, so i was able to find it at the price of 490€ in August. All in all it was a good bang for the buck i think: i don't care if we get quadcores in 2012, i wanna enjoy my phone NOW, whatever i choose, and possibly at a reasonable price.
With more competition, Android ICS on the horizon and more frequent releases prices will continue to go down.

wow, are people really complaining? This is a really exciting time for phonophiles!
Always an exciting new phone on the horizon. And the prices keep on dropping faster and faster. I have my eye on the Galaxy Note right now. And I know if I can wait a couple of months, the price will drop drastically, and there will probably be an even better phone released by then. And so many accessories to go with each phone!!
Now that i have a decent phone in the share of a galaxy s2 i know that i would not be in too much of a rush for a phone upgrade time. Before i had a wildfire which i hated so wasn't wanting to wait too long for a phone and my upgrade was due at release.

S4 prices dropping

Going by prices at Negri and Expansys, I see prices dropping fast.
At Negri, prices for i9500 went from $850 when it first came out to $800 to $750 to $740 and now $690
S4 i9500 at Negri Electronics
S4 @ Expansys going for $770
S4 i9500 at Expansys
I was going to buy, but at the rate the price is dropping...kinda scares me.
Maybe they're not selling as well as they thought causing price drops ...
Excellent news, hopefully will see the price drop in the UK soon as well

If you avoided buying a mobile phone on the basis of it's price dropping over time you would never purchase it. It's what happens, especially in the first month or so of release.

Pretty much all phones that have the anticipation factor (iPhone, S3, S4.... even the newer Blackberrys) have a higher initial price cos they know that early adopters, gadget freaks (like me) will pay that little extra to get the newest phone first.
Even the contract prices are higher in the first month or so, either upfront cost or per month.
Happens every time a new phone comes out.
Who has the better rep?
Expansys or Negri?
Prices are going down, means many people already bought the phone since day one, they must have a much more larger inventory for GS4 than previous galaxy phones, I remember when the GS2 came out, sold out within minutes from the first few set of batches, weeks apart! plus there are some people who didn't upgrade from GS3 to GS4, I believe it was worth the update since just about everything in the in hardware doubled, but at the same time, from an S2 to S3 I don't think it was not worth it upgrade because upgrade was not sufficient (few minor updates from GS2 to GS3)
Most people payed $800 or more preordering it or buying the GS4 the first week of its release, i will waited for the 2nd Week Saved about $150 from launch price, since the price went down. but now prices gone down more affordable! which maybe good for the CHEAP people who brag about that launch prices are expensive, when its the actual RETAIL price of a newly launched phone.
Greetings..
What?..
I've come from the S2 to the S4. If anything it was certainly a leap from S2 to S3 than S3 to S4. Think you got it back to front there.

I just got mine off ebay yesterday for 500 the exynos version totally love it.
Price is dropping but not that Samsung is giving that discount. Probably it depends on the shop and place. Here in Holland the price is not dropping. Octa core is not for 4G and maby the phone shops know something you don't know. That is, 4G is coming in your country and they want to get rid of all the octa core phone fast.

Prices of used S4 falling very fast.

I've been tracking S4 prices of ripbay for a while and having been shocked to see they've fallen very quickly over the last 8 weeks. In the UK you couldn't pick up a S4 for under £350 8 weeks ago, now £310-£320 is common and I've seen phones go as low as £275.
Is this because people are trying/moving to the iphone 5 I wonder?
If sammie got their finger out and started shipping the i9506 with larger memory it could help popularity again......
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
it's probably because of the note 3. also other makers too but i would think the iPhone has the least effect. no one's excited about the 5s this year like it was last year
btw i think you should look at phones more like computers where you don't need to upgrade every 2 years anymore. that's how comps were in the 90s but now ive had my laptop for 7 years before replacing it. the mobo burnt and i want to play gta5 when it comes to pc
with this phone, the only reason to upgrade is camera quality will be better in a few years
Uhh, the S4 was released end apr/may, so 8 weeks ago the phone had only been out around 2 months? Now it's been about 4-5 months.. So used phones being sold now are probably 'more used' than they were 8 weeks ago. Not surprised they're getting cheaper.
Also I'm guessing that people who wanted the s4 when it first came out more or less have gotten it by now, so less demand = lower prices.
The main factor as to why the S4 is dropping so quick is because, newer faster smartphones are about to be released such as the G2, Z1, Note 3 ect.
Plus S4 is now considered old tech in smartphone terms, hence why it's dropping in price so quickly, and it's retail price as also dropped considerably since it was released back in late April.
If you go back to the S2 days that held it price right up to the point the S3 was released, simple because at the time there was nothing out from anybody else that could touch it, I got best part of £300 for my S2 that was a year old, there is no way on earth i'll get that next year for my S4, when the time comes to getting shut for the S5.
Just way things are now with Android Smartphones.
Yeah I've seen the same as well, I'm going to try and get about £350 for it now and just wait for the nexus 5, was really disappointed by this phone

Question, Thinking about buying S6, but selling in the future to fund for Note 5

So, I've never sold my phones before, but the thing is, I really want to move over to the phablet side of things, and I want to get the note 5. The Note 5 is slated for a q3 release. My upgrade is due already (have a HTC m7) and since I pretty much put my HTC out of commission, I'm using my Blackberry from like 2009 as my current phone.
Main question is, If I buy the s6 and sell it in like 5 months tops, what would I get for it?
It's hard to say to be honest. Since they'll be a lot of S6 devices sold the resale value is likely to be lower, like other Galaxy devices in the past. Supply and demand after all.
On the other hand the build quality is much better than previous devices and it's likely to be higher than previous years.
I'm in the same boat as you, I am intrigued by the S6, and possibly the G4, but I know the Note 5 will likely be even better.
Both are great devices (Note 4 lollipop update killed my battery life). As someone who has gone from phone to phablet then back again, I can tell you that selling your galaxy phone on ebay, CL etc can be pretty disappointing. If you pay full price today, in 6 months you could probably pull $350 selling it... at least that's been my experience. Either way, good luck, and the GS6 has been great for me so far so you can't go wrong there.
I would agree with the above post. I am guessing that in 6 months you'll probably be able to get 350 to 450 for the GS6. That's really not bad, but you'll be paying about 200 for using the device for 6 months.
Sent from my SM-G920V using XDA Premium HD app
Yep all the above post are accurate the note probably holds the most value of any android phone. Truth is because of so many releases android phones don' keep value well, in about 2 month you'll start seeing s6 pop up used for around 450-475 probably by the fall when the note 5 comes for a mint condition s6 32gb you'd get about 400 probably

haha...Samsung S6 is losing steam. Unlocked for 430$

Or maybe it has nothing to do with the Pure. Maybe it's because more people like and prefer the S6 Edge rather than the regular S6, and they're trying to offload the less popular of the two by putting it on sale.
Just a thought.

Sales for the S6 have been way down.

I dont think it has to do something with the Pure... I can see huge pricedrops on all Early/Mid 2015 Flashship Phones. Galaxy S6 is down to ~399€ including a cashback that samsung offers here. HTC One is at 450€ - All the 32GB version... So the MOto X is not really a "mid-highend phone with a great price" here in germany. I paied 509€ with Moto Maker. Even the S6 Edge is cheaper
I had the Edge...got tired of the feel of the phone in hand. Curved screen is a gimmick for sure. Had I went with the standard screen to begin with I may not have made the jump to the Pure. Glad I had the Edge because I made the jump and the Pure is by far my favorite phone up to this point. But the S6 is now almost 6 months old! In dog years that's like "ancient" LOL! So I think the price drop is more a result of age than anything else. I also think that's a major reason why nearly all manufacturers are making these things less end user serviceable. They figure with new phones coming out every 6 months who's ever going to need to replace a battery? So they just need to make room for the newest phones now.

Actually, age did not matter earlier. For example, I couldn't find unlocked m8 even after 1 year of its release below 500$. Same thing with S5. S6 price drop has been unusual in my tracking of device prices over the years (since 2008).
I have 200GB of storage on my MXPE.
I can have every app, every game, and whole lot of books, music, and movies, with plenty of room for backups and never have to store stuff in the cloud.
Plus I can OTG another 128GB if I feel crazy.

The S6 price drop has nothing to do with the MPX, in fact the MPX will more then likely not even outsell the S6 though its sales arent as good as previous years, samsung kind of canabalized the S6 sales by releasing the edge at the same time as the S6, also they're about to do the same with the edge after releasing the edge+, but theres also another phone coming out that will outsell every phone out there, you might have heard of it, its called a new iPhone...by your logic the MPX should drop in price too actually all phones should drop in price, since the iPhone will kill everyone elses sales LOL...

Yes, it likely has everything to do with iPhone release.
But in the Android market, MXPE sells for 400$ and is a great phone. Why would anybody spend 600+ if they are looking for an Android phone? I never said MXPE has or will outsell S6. All I said was that S6 may be seeing pressure from MXPE in the Android market. If you don't want the Apple ecosystem, you have every reason to land on MXPE instead of S6. MXPE is just so much a better phone for less. Samsung knows it.

I'd agree with you the MXP is a better phone now but here's the thing that price reduction is from a ebay store, its not a corporate samsung store, u walk into one they'll still charge you the 600+ retail...so while samsung says this is the retail, individuals can choose to sell the device for as high or as low as they want...so my point is i guess this reduction really has nothing to do with Samsung feeling pressure from Moto and more that the individual seller just wanted to get rid of his own S6 stock.
Probably has more to do with this... BTW on that sale there is no warranty from manufacturer...

You don't say? There will be a S7 in the Spring?
Seriously the phone markets are in flux right now. First, upgrades are pretty minimal. Second, subsidies are non existent for man. As such, people are starting to think twice about buying $800 devices, especially when many of their bucket wish list items are getting removed.
So it is no surprise that people are starting to not upgrade for big bucks and hold off or looking maybe to spend 40% less and still enjoy an upgrade.

Looks like nobody is buying Samsung S6. In the face of pressure from MXPE for sure:
