Never seen this, but one of my biggest issues is the lack of a Reboot command in the power menu.
Read that 'pressing and holding' the power button for about 3 seconds will reboot the device... Shockingly, it worked!
Not a big deal probably, but it solved my need for a reboot button!

that turned off my phone inmediately instead of rebooting, still, its handy
The app Quick Boot also can function as a reboot button. It has a small 1x1 widget that you can place.
Requires root though.

I know it's Power + Vol Down while booting up to get to the BL, but the soft buttons blink 6 times and then nothing happens.
Then i let go of the buttons, try it again, and nothing happens.
SOmetimes holding Power+volDown works, sometimes it doesnt.
What am i missing here
a program called quickboot. Only works for rooted phones
Or
connect phone to computer
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot bootloader
It's very iffy for me, the best is to use a short cut like quick boot or have an extended power menu. But if you must, power down your device, hold volume down and power for 5 seconds (I countdown like the shuttle is taking off lol) then on 5 release power but hold volume down... Should pop up every time

yea i've been using adb, but that's a hassle when im not at home
i guess i'll be giving the app a shot, but what am i doing wrong with the key presses?
should i do it with the phone off?
while rebooting?
from the OS?
what
how i do it and what i originally read to be the correct button combination is hold down power and volume down for 5 seconds, then release power button while holding volume. should work.

Turn off fastboot in power settings, if it's on when you power off the phone its like sleep, it's not actually off and that would be why it's not working for you.

If you are okay with flashing a better, faster rom compared to stock, CleanROM has this feature from the power menu. Works flawlessly.
Before that, I used adb commands.
I hold down the vol down button, then press and hold the power button for about 2 sec, continuing to hold down the vol down button until you are in the bootloader.
So the vol down button is the trigger for the bootloader.
And you have to have fastboot turned off.

This had happened to me before. I'll restart my phone and it boots normally but then I hear a beep and I've lost all my apps and my custom launcher and I see a toast like message with safe mode written on it. I cleared my cache in recovery then it boot up back to normal. Just wondering if any one has seen this.

Weird, I have seen this message on my old ipod touch but never seen on android devices

1) turn mobile phone off.
2) hold power button down until the first white HTC Screen
3) now release the power button and hold the Volume Down button, until boot finished
Now you see "safe mode".
this is from older devices and can be used for removing bad third party apps
I had a couple time where it went into safe mode on its own.
Since I got this phone the power button is hard to deal with. For example, I press and hold to get the menu to shutdown or enter recovery, but as soon as I let go of the button the phone will turn off the screen. I have to hold the button, or time it just right that as soon as the menu pops up I let go of the button. Even then, sometimes when I hit the power button to turn off the screen, the screen will come right back on.
Is this normal for this phone? What is going on here? Is there a timer I can adjust for how long the button can be pressed or something? I've used stock rom and two other custom roms. All seem to be the same.
The power button is kinda a crappy design on this phone, its not built into the logic board and just taped in place. My guess is yours is loose or has some debris stuck around it and I'm sure opening it up and cleaning things up will help

Is there any way to trigger a restart?
All I get on long-pressing the power button is Power Off and Airplane Mode. On all previous Android devices I've used, I've always had a few more options, including, quite conveniently, a Restart option.
If not there, can I find a Restart function elsewhere?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521809 or a custom ROM.
Stock ROM does not have this function I believe but I simply press the button one more time to switch it on, lol

Admittedly trivial and silly, but as I've been tinkering I keep turning off (to do a restart) and while I wait for power to turn off I put it down and start doing something else, and half an hour later I realize I forgot to turn the phone back on.
you can use a terminal shell too
My primary phone has met its maker but my brother has given me an older/busted up Nexus 5 to use as a replacement.
The screen on the phone is broken up pretty good but I put a screen protector on it to stop from it shedding glass or getting any worse.
The biggest issue i'm having is with disabling the power button.
The button itself sticks frequently, and while I can find lots of solutions to waking the phone up, I can't find many solutions for disabling the power button.
The phone is currently unlocked and using TWRP. Just need to figure out how to disable the power button without bricking the phone.
In the same boat with a sticking power button.
I am using the "gravity screen" app to avoid having to use the power button.
I have been able to get through without using the power button for the last 6 months.
key things.
never let the phone power down.
restart the phone once every day . (use twrp restart or tasker for scheduled restart)
hope that helps.
Enjoy the Nexus 5
P.S. : I am close to the 3 year mark on my Nexus 5 after ordering it the day it was launched.
