Restart - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to trigger a restart?
All I get on long-pressing the power button is Power Off and Airplane Mode. On all previous Android devices I've used, I've always had a few more options, including, quite conveniently, a Restart option.
If not there, can I find a Restart function elsewhere?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521809 or a custom ROM.
Stock ROM does not have this function I believe but I simply press the button one more time to switch it on, lol

Admittedly trivial and silly, but as I've been tinkering I keep turning off (to do a restart) and while I wait for power to turn off I put it down and start doing something else, and half an hour later I realize I forgot to turn the phone back on.

you can use a terminal shell too

[Q] Power Button Failure

My power button decided to die on me last night (had the phone since Feb). Luckily, I can wake the screen using the volume keys thanks to widgetlocker, and I am using a widgetsoid app widget to lock the screen. Still would like my power button back, I can't switch off the phone without battery pull, and to switch back on, i need to plug it into a charger. ANyone experience this? Do I need to open the damn thing and mess around with it to get the button to work again? Looks like a purely physical/mechanical problem here.
so I guess I'm screwed based on all the views without any replies :s

ive been using my phone with a dead power button since august. no problems here(lol). and the same thing with my nexus one the year before. cm has a volume rocker wake option, lockscreen widget turns off the screen, rootbooter boots into recovery, bootloader, and reboots(can power off in recovery or bootloader). but, im not on cm anymore, now im on ics. in ics, if you disable the lockscreen, you can wake with the volume rocker without any extra apps. also, im using the button remapper app to use my search button as the power button to turn off the screen. im using the twrp recovery instead of cwm recovery, because you dont need the power button in twrp recovery. to power on my phone from a cold start, i just give my phone a light smack on the backside, near the power button.
haha, interesting comment about the backside smack! Couldn't get that to work from a cold start. I have to plug it in..
unfortunately, I am using stock ROM, so I will have to make do with the apps available to me now.. widgetlocker manages ok with the volume buttons, but sometimes it fails, and I end up having to call myself from my landline from the office when I don't have my charger with me.
Guess I'll have to wait for ICS to come OTA (god knows when that will be, but can't be too far away now).
same issue here
even my power button died a month ago.. and have never rooted my phone
have been managing with "widget locker" and "screen off and lock" apps.
Did you get the OTA update of ICS for nexus s
Now that I can't manually update my phone, is there any way to force an OTA to the phone ?
Why not have the thing repaired?

[Q] what is the best way to boot into recovery/BL 100% of the time

I know it's Power + Vol Down while booting up to get to the BL, but the soft buttons blink 6 times and then nothing happens.
Then i let go of the buttons, try it again, and nothing happens.
SOmetimes holding Power+volDown works, sometimes it doesnt.
What am i missing here
a program called quickboot. Only works for rooted phones
Or
connect phone to computer
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot bootloader
It's very iffy for me, the best is to use a short cut like quick boot or have an extended power menu. But if you must, power down your device, hold volume down and power for 5 seconds (I countdown like the shuttle is taking off lol) then on 5 release power but hold volume down... Should pop up every time

yea i've been using adb, but that's a hassle when im not at home
i guess i'll be giving the app a shot, but what am i doing wrong with the key presses?
should i do it with the phone off?
while rebooting?
from the OS?
what
how i do it and what i originally read to be the correct button combination is hold down power and volume down for 5 seconds, then release power button while holding volume. should work.

Turn off fastboot in power settings, if it's on when you power off the phone its like sleep, it's not actually off and that would be why it's not working for you.

If you are okay with flashing a better, faster rom compared to stock, CleanROM has this feature from the power menu. Works flawlessly.
Before that, I used adb commands.
I hold down the vol down button, then press and hold the power button for about 2 sec, continuing to hold down the vol down button until you are in the bootloader.
So the vol down button is the trigger for the bootloader.
And you have to have fastboot turned off.

Locked Phone - Home Button Screen On and Off?

So when my phone is locked, the home button turns the screen on. This is fine, I often use it to check the time and such. However, to turn the screen back off I have to hit the power button.
Wondering if there's a way to set the phone so that the home button turns OFF the screen too (when phone is locked)? Possible?
Now, I'm no developer, but I'd have to say not possible. Unless someone can script an app to only work when the phone is in lock mode, but that just seems doubtful.

Same situation as you, found the answer in another forum.
Ive been using this app to turn off the screen by the proximity sensor, so far working great.
Smart Screen Off LITE

you can try a custom rom to get it

It is possible when you giving up actual home button function.
Then you have to enable on-screen navigation bar, instead of hardware physical button.
This thread is over 2 years old guys. Also, if you run AOSP, double tap the status bar to turn the display off. Works on SlimKat, should be like that on CM too.

Broken Power Button?

So I was using my phone earlier and the screen randomly went dark, as if it had timed out. I woke it back up with the home button, then same thing happened again about 10 minutes later. I figured my case pinched the button or something to turn it off. It turns out that now the power button shows no response, at all. No matter how many times or ways I push on it.
Did it just fry? Just like that? Any ways I could test to see if the button itself is the culprit or if it could be any other factor?
First thing I would probably do is Odin back to stock and see if it still doesn't work. If not, I'd say it's a hardware problem.

Boot into CWM recovery, and do a key test and see if the power button is seen. Its under advanced options. use the integrated menu in cwm. Also you need the touch version of CWM recovery. Because if your power button doesn't work you wont be able to select anything.

[Q]Can't get into Recovery Mode, possibly due 2 "sticky" power button. It got worse

[Q]Can't get into Recovery Mode, possibly due 2 "sticky" power button. It got worse
Couple of things first to lay down the situation.
I'm on BEAN Builds 19,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973982
I'm also using ClockworkMod Recovery. Not sure what version.
Now my power button is one of those "sticky" ones, where it's not springy. This has caused me a few problems in which I can't seem to use the button to turn on my phone anymore. If the phone is off, I have to pull the battery, and then re=insert it to turn the phone back on. Also I'm not sure if button is "being held down", since it's so sticky, but the quick toggle options in the ROM for Restart and Recovery don't work. When I use the quick toggle for restart, my phone just turns off, and doesn't restart. As for recovery, I'll touch on that below.
Today I wanted to flash myself a new modem. So I tried to get into Recovery mode. I go into there once after a couple of tries, but the Power Button , being in the down position from the "sticky button", hit the option to restart the phone before I could flash anything/do anything. After a couple of tries of unsuccessfully getting into Recovery Mode the normal holding down buttons way, I decided to try the quick toggle in the rom to get into Recovery mode.
But just like hitting the restart option, it didn't do what I wanted it to do. My phone shut off, but that was it. Now when I try to battery pull and reinsert to get the phone to turn back on, all it does is show the Samsung Logo, turn black, and that's it. I'm assuming that it's trying to boot into Recovery Mode since that's what it was last told to do before I shut off my phone, and I also think that the "sticky power button" is throwing off the phone's attempts to do that.
Any help or direction would be great and much appreciated. Thank you for your time you took to read this.
Bang ur fone on a table. Seriously ppl been doing that on ur situation to pop out the power button. Try to cover ur fone or put a cloth on table so ur fone wont get scratch and stuff

I've got a very similar issue. Only difference is my power button is not stuck at all. However regardless of how I try to enter recovery/Download/ or simply to restart my phone I often times have to try 10 - 15 times before anything other than the Samsung splash screen into black screen of ??? Happens. Up until 5 minutes ago and hopefully for good something somehow decides to let the phone do as I had asked(told) it to do. Wish I had an answer or some help for you instead of reporting the same problem. Hopefully someone out there does.

Did you open up your phone and meter the button? If not its probably sticking. The button you see on the outside is just a contact not the actual button so it won't look compressed. Sounds like your problem is super sensitive button which is related to the sticking button in fact it was what happened to me beforeit started sticking.
