Hey guys, new to n5 and I dig the stock ROM...would a somewhat stock ROM ie cataclysm be any better..than say stock w/ exposed framework?? I think exposed can give me any tweaks I need...right?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Better is a relative term.
What is it you're trying to do with your phone?
many roms arent like really develped roms, people just compile it from whats already made then they add mods, using exposed would be just as good in those cases. but some developers actually develop a rom and fix things, they dont just add mods. those roms would be "better" than just using exposed.
Just thinking in terms of updates, etc...I find stock is good... Guess I'm wondering if the mods take performance away.

Even though I run cataclysm I would recommend staying stock/ rooted and use xposed and either load Xblast or gravity box.

Why do you say that? Just looking for discussion... I feel android has matured greatly since GB into ics. I've looked at cataclysm.. Seems to have the stock feel with just the right features

Really, it's down to what you prefer. I just like to stick to stock rom with xposed modules and a custom kernel like franco.

I say that because there is nothing in cataclysm that I use that isn't available in xposed with gravity box or xblast other than "quicktiles, disables fullscreen keyboard, battery style." As I said nothing not available in xposed. I just don't want to factory reset in all honesty. The only thing I am waiting for with cataclysm is to be able to adjust volume without having to unlock the phone, that is a big gripe of mine.
Thanks man. I'm the same way.. I'm over the whole factory reset.. I'll look into xposed. And stay stock! Thanks again

So I have been on Touchwiz 4.1.2 (AxisM RLS 21) for a long time and when the GEL laucher apk came out I installed it on my phone and I fell in love with it as soon as I got it and that got me wondering..."What features of Touchwiz do I actually use?" If I dont use any features of Touchwiz then I want to flash a 4.4 ROM (most likely Cyanogen Mod) on my S3. So my question to you is What features are specific to Touchwiz (4.1.2) that arent in Stock (4.4) or on Cyanogen Mod?

not just that but knox is like a sandboxed environment essentially separating 2 parts of your phone
for like example 1 work and 1 for development if one of them gets compromised it wont affect the other and you can manage things like remote wipe etc

You lose all of the Samsung branded apps, Kies, and the questionable smart stay function. In return, you get complete control of your device. I have tried a few times to go back to a TW rom in the last year (when CM development slows down and I get bored), but it always feels like going back to kindergarten...
I am on sspencer10's 4.4 build and love it. I even am using the new ART and enjoying the best battery life and smooth function that I have ever had. A few CM options have yet to be thrown in, but these guys are moving fast, and this is my daily driver since last week.

After months of fearing the rooting process, I pulled the trigger last night and rooted my phone for the first time. I flashed a rom (Liquid Smooth to be specific) and I'm loving it. You should definitely get off of TouchWiz as you'll never want to go back!

I saw the OP and I saw that the changelog hasnt been updated in a while. If you dont mind can you tell me what are the bugs and whatnot on it?
The OP in that thread is current. He just does not build everyday because CM does not do a lot daily. Others are cherry picking a lot to add features; they also revert a lot of stuff they cannot get to work. Right now, the camera is not ultra reliable, but everything else is great right now. I use nova, tibu, ROM manager, es file explorer, etc. for utility. 200 or so other apps are stable as well.

Wondering if anyone could take the time to build a very basic rom that has app ops and supersu built in. just odexed to use with art as its not really worth having xposed since all i look for is app ops, supersu and maybe just quicksettings 3.0 from PA. I would love to do it myself, but dont have the machine, knowledge, nor time to do so.
Sure, anything for you.

There is an app to make app ops appear in your system settings, just one question out of curiosity, why not flash a custom rom?

You do it.
Guess the OP wasn't expecting this.
But really, if you don't have the knowledge, learn. Making a ROM that does what you want is a matter of taking the PA ROM and removing and adding some files. There's no need to have a special machine or anything.
Oh, and no.

Hi! So I just rooted my N5, flashed Franco Kernel, Xposed+Gravity Box. So after this when I'm at the home screen there is an ever so slight lag when I click the recents button or go home from app tray, etc. So basically it kind of lags on the home screen, no widgets or anything. Is this my fault and is there anything I can do to fix it? Thanks!

mess with the settings, find what you like. if youre still unhappy, try a different kernel, or different rom. try a few, find what you enjoy and what fills your needs. then youll be trully happy

Okay I'll try to fix this or I'll flash a rom. I think it's Gravitybox that's making this beauty lag.

It is gravity box. I quit using it for the same reason. Now, if I want features like what GB offers, I just use slimkat... Which has most if not all plus more hard coded

Oh I knew it may have been the culprit! Well I think I may just flash a custom rom for the features and avoid the lag. Thanks for the awesome advice!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Does anyone else feel that most custom ROMs today look and feel 95% similar? I mean the only changes seems to be which module they are using for the tweaks and the boot animations though some are much more stable than the others.
I am Carbon and love the minimalist approach that it has taken and it is super smooth and stable.
From a ROM perspective, I find that there are two which are doing things differently -
1. PA ROM, they have gone away from the customization menu and allowed this to happen dynamically
2. MIUI - Completely different look and feel.
Are there others which are vastly different from the rest? Look forward to your suggestions. Thanks.
Different... maybe the ones based on sense, touchwiz... but yeah, a lot of roms have the same things but with different form.

He said original, not unique. Other ROMs might have taken some features but it was original to that ROM. Hardly any features would be "unique" as its likely another will take the commits and implement it into their own ROM.

Their devs (or someone helping them develop the OS) are porting it to the Nexus 5. There's an experimental source which you can build, its not daily driver capable yet. I've built it and successfully booted into it on my Nexus 5 before.

Hi there everybody,
I just want to know if there's anybody still running KitKat and if yes, what the reason is for doing so.
I'm on Marshmallow preview 3 right now. I got the Nexus 5 a while after Lollipop was released and I never used KitKat on the N5. I would like to know if the performance/stability/battery life is any better on KitKat compared to Lollipop and Marshmallow.
Thanks in advance.
I am still on kitkat, because I don't want a beta as daily driver, and lollipop make my phone complete freeze a few time, so I go back to KK and play safe.
p.s. the freeze are not due to the memory leak of lollipop, it just freeze when I have too much app multitasking. or sometime coping lot of file using root explorer via samba

Why buy a nexus if you don't like upgrades?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I was on KK until about a week ago. I am a user of Slimroms though. Slimkat had all the features I needed, and I have an infant child, so didn't really want to mess around with things too much. He has gotten bigger now, and the Slim team is awesome and have brought many of the functions back on SlimLP. ElementalX is good on it, xposed is working mostly, so I tested it out for a while and made the switch. I tested via multirom, installed SlimLP as secondary, swapped it to primary, installed all my tweaks, tested it for a while, restored all my data from KK rom from the nandroid I took at the beginning of testing, data came back without any major issues, so I decided to stay with it after a few days.
One other reason I stayed on KK so long is that development on LP took some time to come through. Not just the wonderful devs here, but also commercial apps. I believe LP was a update for updates sake, maybe a bridge to M. Hopefully, M will bring out some nice things.

Update and upgrade are not interchangeable. Many people felt with the roll out of LP it was an update, but not really an upgrade. Even after changing I still think this, thank god for the amazing work of the independent dev community. SlimLP for me, whatever you enjoy for yourself, but stock LP is not an upgrade. Like I said though, hopefully it is a bridge to M where better things might come.
I am not against progress, moving ahead to better things, but I think it is a bit subjective. Who thinks what is better, and so on. LP showed some abilities, but ran into some issues. Once everything adjusts to LP, hopefull, the transition to M will be smooth and great.
