[Q] Galaxy S3 not reading any SD cards? - General Questions and Answers

My i9305T Galaxy S3 is not reading micro SD cards at all. I have tried using the cards in my computer, and they work fine. My phone, on booting has a notification that states "Preparing SD card; Checking for errors.", Then after a minute or two, has another notification stating that the SD card is safe to remove. I have tried with multiple SD cards, they all work in a PC, but not my phone.

so the phone shows nothing when browsing trough your files with a filemanager?
In that case Are you using the stock rom? some custom roms may have problems with the reading of big (64 GB) MicroSD cards.

Format using fat32 make sure it's not xfat

Same problem
I'm close to getting a new phone. My s3 won't read any SD card I insert in. I tried formatting from exfat to NTFS and nothing changed. Also tried rebooting, switching roms, clearing my SD card, and pretty much anything else I can think of.
Any of you guys know a solution, or a potential solution?

SD Cards --- External Storage

Ok maybe I'm missing somthing but I got my new sd card tonight and formated it on the computer. Then put it in the slot and it not showing up. I did a fat32 format. The card is a sandisk class 10 32gig. Any ideas? as alway you guys are awesome. Thanks for the help
Any ideas why I can't mount my sd card? It's not showing that there is a card there.

I can put the card in my dx and it works fine but put it back in the s3 and nothing. I'm running synergy anybody thinks that has something to do with it. Maybe I'll try a different rom. Any ideas?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
first try reflashing synergy. Something funky may have happened when you flashed the Rom.
If that does not work go back to stock and see if it will work on the stock rom, heck it is always worth a try. If this doesn't work, it may have been the formatting done by your computer that has made it incompatible.
If nothing works, take it back to the store you bought it from ( if you bought it from a store x.x) and just get an exchange because it is technically a faulty product to you right now.
Also, it may be inconvenient, but please list more info. What version of Synergy? What kernel are you running? Either of these could be the problem.
I will try to re flash ASAP... I'm running synergy rom nightly r53. And the kernel that came with it. I just got this 32gig class 10 card but my 16gig from my dx did not work either. I never tried before I rooted it. Hope flash will help.

All these threads I see about cards not being able to be mounted - can't you just format the card in the phone itself and then mount and use it?
That's how we got the 64 gig sandisk cards to work in the mytouch 4g slide - and when I took that card out of it and put it in the SGSIII it was immediately usable, didn't have to format or anything.
Why have I not seen mention of trying this - did I just miss it or is "format card" greyed out under storage options?

Do we know what's wrong with the format option in the phone then?
I phrase it that way because my over a year old htc device can prep the cards to work in the SGSIII - so thia device should be able to do it too.
If going from gingerbread to ics means losing critical functions like this, think I need a tally of all the missing features gingerbread offered before calling the upgrade progress...
...or is this samsungs fault and a device specific problem?

[Q] Micro SD card problem

Hello all and everyone who may be able to help me out! I recently got a new phone (galaxy nexus) and decided to root and s-off my evo 3d. After another sad fail at s-off, my sd card was acting up. When its in a phone, it will say the card is blank or it is using an unsupported file system. Upon formatting option nothing happens. When i insert the sdcard into an adapter and put it into my computer, i can navigate to my computer and when i try to get into the drive, "my computer" crashes and i have to remove the card to get back to the start screen. I can use the drive for other things but it just wont read this card and makes the computer freeze. ive tried programs and whenever i try to select the drive, again the program im using crashes. Other cards work fine so it seems the card itself is the problem. worked fine before. Can anyone help me out here?
Had a similar problem a while back seems i had forgot to remove the password before plugging the card into my pc. Not sure how that will help you here tho.
replace the card and check if it is working than the card is defected

Is your phone able to read/detect your card?
If yes then:
Go to Phone Settings> Storage Settings> Unmount SD card> Erase SD card.
Report if that works.
If it's dead, most reputable manufacturers offer a warranty on their cards. Go to their website & look up the procedure for getting an RMA. That's much cheaper than buying a new card.

When the cards in my phone, it gives a notification saying that is an unsupported file system or that it is A blank SD card. When it is in the phone it will not let me erase. when I select Format, it's just kind of stops. and if I select it again, nothing. Can't use unmount or mount as they are greyed out. Wish I could format it.

I had a similar problem figuring out that moving Apps to external sd and then removing this sdcard CAN DESTROY the sdcard controller - better unmount card then remove it or switch phone off and remove it !
Even more worst - it's still working sometimes on any PC with adapter - if you have warranty on that sdcard i would replace it in the store bought !

Maybe i had luck - but since the failure i have been very carefully !
Nowadays sdcards should beeing built that writing more than 100000 times should be possible - so such an error should also not occur
but what the sdcards are very sensitive is heat - temperatures above 55 ° C (131 F) is almost a no go! (or increasing failure rate drastically !)

No when this failure appears - formatting is not possible anymore - the "controller" inside the sdcard is defect !

Just by replying with some information your helping me out. I have tried many SD card repair tools but when the card is in my computer, and if I do anything related to the card, the program just crashes until I pull the card out. I will post a video later. I've never seen this before. If nothing works I'm just gonna get another.

Has anything changed on your setup? As in maybe you flashed a new ROM or reformatted the card, etc??
If not then I suggest you remove the sdcard and see if you can mount it on a PC using a card reader. If the PC can't read the sdcard either then its probably corrupted and needs to be reformatted or replaced.
If it's a Sandisk card and a Samsung device that might be the issue. You can "google" it and will find that some people are having issues with that combination. I personally don't seem to be affected by this issue. I have Sandisk in both my S3 and Note 10.1 and have yet to encounter any problems.
I would do what the other person posted and if it reads fine in your computer it might be the issue I mentioned.

U11 SD card read issue

First time I tried to use sd card on my phone today. It doesn't read the card. Card is working fine. I tested it on pc and on another phone. I formatted it on pc and nothing changed. Phone is us unlocked and running stock oreo. Anyone has the same problem? Or solution?
Edit: problem solved when I format the card through my old phone but not from my pc.
I've had the issue before.. Back up everything on it and format it through your phone, not from a PC... I know it's a well known fact, but in case you don't know, if you ever format a card from your PC, don't use the format tool that comes with Windows, it doesn't format correctly and could damage the card... Also, before you put the card back in the phone, try wiping the terminals on it before re-inserting it

What file system are you using on the card? Try formatting with a different file system to see if you can get it to read.. I had an Android set top box that wouldn't read exFAT but if read NTFS without any issues

For the heck of it, try FAT32.. If you can get it to read in the phone then, reformat it again from the phone.. If it still doesn't read, try another card in the phone to make sure it isn't the phone itself or the rom you have installed.. If the other card works, maybe contact the manufacturer of the card to see if you can get a replacement.. I've done that for a few SanDisk cards already and their customer service is pretty good from my experience
*Edit* I also have had luck with the format tool on SD card.org
